“One Day” Does Not Exist
I haven’t written a post in awhile because I haven’t felt like I was any kind of space to be sharing information about a healthy journey. I have been struggling with my nutrition more so than I expected I would when I sort of “restarted” in January. In fact, January went pretty well, but every other month has pretty much been a bust in terms of consistent healthy eating. April was no exception. On top of that, it took me until now to commit to a consistent workout schedule. I did Core de Force twice and 21 Day Fix in between - and I was consistent with all three of those workouts - but I wasn’t consistent outside of those programs, sort of relying on them to hold me up. So my theme as of late has been consistency, and I’m writing this post with that in mind.
What inspired this post is something that my Aunt Lisa said to me this past weekend, which has stuck with me. I didn’t even know that she was following me on the Paprika page or reading any of this. Out of nowhere, she just said to me that she enjoys reading about my journey and to please keep going. I made a kind of self deprecating joke like, “Oh, I’ll keep going. I might not lose any weight but I’ll keep going.” And she said, “But it doesn’t matter because you’re inspiring and motivating others with your efforts and with what you’re learning.” What that drove home to me is something that I’ve talked about a lot with others but maybe never believed about myself, which is that people are watching even when you think that they aren’t.
What do I mean? Well, usually if I haven’t posted in awhile, it’s because I don’t feel like I am doing anything post-worthy. It means I’ve skipped workouts or my meals haven’t been healthy or whatever. So I don’t post because I’m feeling like I’ve failed the people who follow me. Then, after awhile, I think, “Well I’m sure no one is missing me - what is the point of posting now?” And eventually I never post at all.
But people are paying attention, people I’m not even aware of. There are people who will notice. There are people I’m helping, even when I’m not doing everything exactly “right.” No one cares that I’m not losing weight (apparently), only that I’m continuing to share my ups and downs. Somehow that is beneficial - which is great because it helps me, too, to be able to share the good, the bad, and the ugly.
So then that feeds into something else that I have been thinking and feeling, too. If the past six years have taught me nothing else, they have taught me that this journey is going to be a long one. I used to think about weight loss and a healthy lifestyle in terms of “day one” or “starting on Monday” or “by week 62 I will meet my goal weight” and so on. There was always a beginning and an end. I think there is still a beginning. On July 11, 2011, I decided to make a change and, finally, the change stuck. I think that is an important date for me to remember and it is definitely the “start” to all of this. That day will forever be Day One. But I’ve thought about other “day ones” as I’ve lapsed on various aspects of my life, allowed myself to gain back weight, etc., not the least of which was January 1, 2017. 
But none of these other “day ones” count, and I need to stop thinking of myself as stopping and restarting. Each day “counts” toward my end goals, whether they end up counting negatively or positively toward them, and arbitrarily starting over again doesn’t erase the poor choices made prior to that new start date. Resetting the timetable gives yourself permission to cycle through, yo-yo through and continually reset it, start over. But this is my life now. I definitely restarted it on July 11, 2011. That day changed my entire life, for the rest of my life. I don’t feel like my real, adult life started until that moment. I’ve written about this a lot, but I’ll say it again. Changing my lifestyle that day got me (a) out of an emotionally abusive relationship and (b) out of an aimless academic and career path. That Day One counts. But every day since then has also counted, and I can’t keep allowing myself to stop and restart. Each day of this journey means something for my life, and I think acknowledging that will help me to make better choices each day, one day at a time.
And, of course, I’ve always, constantly, perhaps obsessively, thought about The End. The goal weight. The day that I step on the scale, and I weight 150lbs. The day I put on a low rise bikini confidently and walk out on the sand. The day I wear a tank top without being self conscious about my upper arms. The day I walk into any store and can purchase something I love in my size with ease because the whole store fits me. The day I can walk up a flight of stairs - hell, two flights of stairs - without feeling pain and without getting winded. The day I don’t have to modify anything in a workout. The day I look like I belong in the gym, in the dance studio.  
I have thought about that future life everyday of my teen and adult life. And I recently had a kind of revelation - that day does not exist. I don’t mean that I will never weigh 150lbs or feel good in a bikini or walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded. I might meet those goals in the future. But it’s not one single day. I’m not going to wake up one day in a different body, in a different world, with a different mindset. Instead, every single day that I am living should be a day that I am working toward that life. Every day of the past six years is a day I have worked toward that life, for better or for worse. And it’s not just all about losing weight, either. Losing weight doesn’t automatically make a person feel good in their skin. Losing weight doesn’t automatically make me be able to lift more at the gym. Losing weight doesn’t give me money to spend on new clothes that fit me.
As I realized that that “day” doesn’t exist but is, instead, a future built up of a series of moments, choices, days, I realized just how long it will probably be before I’m living my daily life with that myriad of changes - a long time. And if it’s going to take me that long to be able to make good, consistent change, then I better start learning to love my body now, as it is. I have to say that I think that shift has already started to take place in my mind - and lifting is definitely helping with that, as has physical therapy. As I focus more on what I can get my body to do - 75lb deadlifts, improved body weight lunges, 30 second forearm planks that I couldn’t hold before - and less about what I don’t like about it or what it can’t do, I like it more and more. I’m starting to love my body as it is and accept it as it is, which is a mental health win. I still hope to lose weight, but I need to love my body either way and focus on getting it healthier regardless of what the scale reads. There is not an “end” - there is just a journey that I’ll be on for the rest of my life, which means twists, turns, u-turns, even. I can’t keep waiting for that day that God answers the prayers I used to make as a teen and allows me to wake up skinny because that’s never going to happen. I need to live my life in the now, not in the future, and make changes now that make me happy, which includes loving and appreciating the body I have now.
Another thing that drove this home for me also happened this weekend. My mom derogatorily said she looked fat in pictures from her birthday. All I could think and say was, “No, you look like the beautiful woman you are. You look like yourself. You look like a happy person celebrating your 60th birthday.” And I also thought, “If my mom thinks she looks fat then what must she think of me since I weigh at least 50lbs more than she does?” But here’s the thing - my mother would never look at a picture of me and say to me, “You look fat in that picture.” Maybe she would think it - let’s not go there - but she would never say it to me. So why would she say it about herself? She should love herself as much as she loves me - enough not to comment negatively about a picture of herself.
And as soon as I thought that I was like, “Oh.” This is what they are getting at in the body positive movement. Let’s turn the tables on myself. I would never comment on another person’s body the way that I internally think about my own. So why am I doing it to myself? Why am I caring that people can clearly see chubby arms when I wear a tank top? Maybe they don’t know it, but I know that these chubby arms are strong. I know that my bicep curls are improving. I know how hard the muscle is when I flex. Probably no one is thinking anything about my chubby arms when I wear a tank top, except for me, and if they are formulating opinions - who cares? I should only care what I think, and I need to improve on my own thought process and stop the negative, insecure self talk. My arms are functional. My arms are strong. My arms are not burning up in sleeves in this Georgia heat.
Slowly but surely I think I am figuring this all out…
Okay, so - May goals.
Keep trying new vegetables - we were not as consistent about this in April as I had planned. But we bought alfalfa sprouts today! Eggplant is definitely on our minds…
Stay consistent with weight lifting. I’ve gone four complete weeks consistently (I think I said three in the insta post, but it’s definitely four), so I’m going to try to finish out the month of May without missing a single lifting session. If I do that, it will be 7.5 weeks of consistency!
Use 12 of my 20 classes at Dance101. Last month I said 15, and I didn’t meet that, but I know I can’t meet 15 this month just due to my own schedule. I was out of town last week and missed three classes, I have to work a Saturday, so I’ll miss two more and then I’m not sure if they are open on Memorial Day - if they are, it will still just be 13 for the month. So I’m setting this goal at 12 and hoping I can meet it then I will potentially bump it up in June
Improve my nutrition. This is definitely my number one goal this month. I have been super lax on it, and I just need to get back into gear with staying more consistently healthy in the choices I make.
