❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

This is a tough question bc with my current obsession (Stranger Things) there's a lot of characters that I feel get mischaracterized by the fandom.

But since I already talked about Nancy and Joyce in some of my other responses to this ask game I think I'll talk about Steve in this one:

I really don't get why the fandom (or at least parts of the fandom i stumble across quite often) feminizes him so much.

Now, I'm all for femme dudes. I am a femme dude and I love seeing that sort of thing in fiction. I even really love seeing more traditionally masculine characters exploring their more feminine sides.

But i see so many fics feminize him to the point that the character is to me unrecognizable. These depictions of Steve don't feel (to me) like a fun new twist on the character, or exploring the potential of something that's underexplored in the canon, or exploring how things might have turned out different if x, y, or z had been changed.

They just kind of feel like some character i don't know masquerading as a character i find really interesting and compelling in the canon.

Along a similar vein, I don't like when I see him depicted as being stupid about everything?

Steve is shown to not be smart in the same ways as many of the other characters, and he is frequently paired up with characters that are just generally very academically smart (compared to everyone) such as Nancy and Dustin. But he is also, repeatedly, shown to be very competent and capable in a lot of other ways (even if he doesn't do well in school).

One area in particular, is that in the canon Steve is generally pretty socially acute (with some inconsistencies bc the show sucks at consistent characterization). He is also really good at being presented with new information or a new situation and adapting quickly and skillfully (even if he freaks out a bit about it in the process).

He may not be good at writing essays. He may not know as much about science or history as Dustin does.

But Steve is not only good at listening to people who know more about a subject than him, but also at getting the work done and doing what is necessary to action that info in any given situation.

He also is repeatedly shown to have a decent amount of common sense, something which those super academically smart characters he's often paired with tend to lack.

So I really don't like how often i see him depicted at just being so incompetent and stupid about everything. And i don't like when the canon contradicts itself to try and show him like this also.

so i DO NOT enjoy research. i really admire writers who really sit down and take the time to really research some of the things that are included in their works... i do research though, when it is needed... which is more than i would like.

as for the fic that required the most research... uh. it's one of my wips. it's not like it's a secret, but i want to pretend it is LMAO so i won't go into detail about the research but it was a lot in a way hahahha.

SORRY FOR THE WAIT, AGAIN I OVERTHINK SHIT. I misread "hunt" as "haunt" and then contemplated if they really mean something different in this context??? I came to the conclusion it's like being haunted but more immediately panic-inducing, I guess?

I've been thinking about it and I feel like after years of being a pretty proactive and dedicated adventurer-hero, Alus must have fans by now. He's a nice guy; he'll go out of his way to fix strangers' problems even if it's way more than reasonably expected of him. I'm sure he's saved countless lives because of that, both in battle and out; saving someone from a life-and-death situation in the field of battle or donating an absurdly high amount to charity, if not directly to the person in question. His life goal is striving to be a stereotypical faerie-tale "hero" and by god he is successful in living up to that title. But I think the more dedicated the fan, the more scared he becomes of them. He won't show that fear, of course, but I think he'll start to try and avoid them in a polite way - ghosting, making polite excuses, even bribery to make them go away. Why? OH BUDDY, DOES ALUS HAVE IMPOSTER SYNDROME.

In other words, he is incredibly uncomfortable around people who put him on a pedestal. He's terrified that they'll find out he's actually not all that great. He wants to be a beacon of hope, but ultimately he accepts (albeit against his will) that he's only human. He can only be truly comfortable around people who treat him as an equal, if not lesser. (though I doubt he's consciously aware of this.)

You asked if he's constantly on alert? Fucking of course he is. He's one of the most uptight people you'll ever meet in his anxiousness to keep up his princely persona and mask his true emotions with a comforting smile for others' sake. If confronted enough, I think he'll just stoically cry, and never just for himself; oft likely in his frustration over not being able to save someone else. His anger, too, is only over others. He buries his selfish desires deep deep down. If someone were able to unlock that part of him, the resulting flood would be humiliating for him.

Past mistakes and memories - he does his best to try and make things up to the loved ones of those he's killed and those he failed to protect, either through money or funeral assistance or otherwise - I think a lot of the people close to him are concerned that it's a borderline obsession of taking the worst blunt of every tragedy onto himself that he can. He does so anonymously, but anyone who takes enough time to notice the unusual patterns post-battle will figure out it's him. He doesn't want to face those people directly. He feels responsible. Maybe nothing will ease his guilt.

Author's P.S. - this is a shitty emotional mindset to be in. Alus was made back in the day when I was scared of ever fucking up and running away when I was caught, I made him specifically to work through that shit. I'm not there anymore, but he still is. I don't condone or romanticize this kind of shit anymore. But I think it's a fascinating mindset to write through. I hope I can figure out a way to get him through it too, organically, but I don't RP enough for it to have happened yet.

Oh so many, I love tropes. A few that I really adore are fake dating, mutual pining, and misunderstandings.

There's definitely some I'm generally not into (like college AUs) but at the moment I'm having a hard time coming up with any I can't stand (though I'm sure they exist). Maybe ones like hurt no comfort or like... reincarnation stuff? Things that don't have a happy/hopeful ending and/or require character deaths (which are just not my cup of tea). On a more fandom specific side rant: one stranger things fandom trope i can't stand is when fics continue the show's tendency to let the wheelers get away with things without them needing to acknowledge they were in the wrong or ever deal with the consequences.

Some aspects yes, others very much no. 

Y’aromirr has undergone a lot of growth since he left home, most of which was by force, and a lot of it stings at his mind in the night when he least expects it; Could he have mended his relationship with his mother? Should he have...? And beyond that, was his blood-soaked path through sword training truly the best option, or just the one he chose to see? While he’s happy to be where he is, and who he is, he certainly can’t say he’s at peace with it all... At least not yet.
