I’ve had ideas of some long OL fics (1 or olba, 1 or olnf) that are AU type things, one being a Ghibli inspired fantasy and the other a horror/supernatural mystery, and I’m curious if anyone is actually interested in reading them so I thought I’d post the synopsis for each fic and see if anyone’s interested via interaction!

I wrote these both a little while ago, so these are kinda subject to change, but that’s the basic gist of each plot! (Yes I’m aware the OLNF one is just stranger things that was the main inspo)

My ask contains a serious sensitive subject matter so I respect if you choose not to answer it, but did anyone else get the weird feeling that Noob Saibot's origins in MK1 had some non/con undertones? I thought I was overthinking it but then the newest trailer just added to my suspicion. They kept it unclear to what exactly Havik's done to Bi Han which makes it more sinister. Bi Han was clearly made into Noob Saibot against his will by Havik, the clothes part of his design is mangled, Havik invaded Bi Han's mind with "chaos", whatever that could possibly mean. Am I on to something or am I just over thinking it?

It's in the datamined script that he was brainwashed too (although he can still recognizes Sektor and Scorpion even under the effect of Havik's spell), Bi-Han as Sub-Zero believes in order:

Those needles we see going towards Bi-Han are what he referred to in the trailer as "Havik filled my mind with his chaos".

Bi-Han jumped into the portal with the intention of killing Havik and nothing more. But what was waiting for him on the other side of the portal was not only Titan Havik, but his entire army:

Obviously, Bi-Han lost the fight and was captured to be turned into Noob Saibot, a henchman under Havik's orders who has no control over his own mind (I really don't understand how some people are saying that he volunteered even after watching the trailers...). So much so that when Sektor takes him to Liu Kang, because only another god is capable of breaking Havik's magic, Bi-Han regains control of his mind and goes back to fighting Havik and his minions (just like he was at the beginning of the expansion, in Outworld).

The bio says that Bi-Han died, following the Bio and the datamined script, Bi-Han was probably tortured to death (although, I have agreed with some theories that the death mentioned in the bio may just be a metaphor).

However, he can still be restored to his original form (human, cryomancer)...

I believe we will see Bi-Han being restored as Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot becoming a separate entity from Bi-Han in the Noob Saibot's ending or Sektor's ending.

Bi-Han rolled a -100 for intelligence in that scene when he outright told Kuai he let their dad die.

Bi-Han underestimated Kuai's loyalty to him because he must've really thought bragging how cool it was he let their dad die was gonna make his brother revere him. It's surprising given Kuai made it clear he loved their dad and Bi-Han somehow thought admitting he let him die would make his loyalty to him absolute.

I don’t think Bi-Han telling Kuai Liang the truth about their father’s death has anything to do with intelligence or desire to brag.

For me, that scene was Bi-Han’s frustration at its breaking point - the story mode did not present us much of Lin Kuei brothers interaction but even within the limited space it showed that Bi-Han couldn't do anything, not even just complain for waiting who knows how long without Tomas and Kuai Liang constantly talking about their Father and what the man would want from them. And yes, complaining may be inappropriate, even childish for Grandmaster to do, but for all we know Bi-Han just wanted to vent in frustration to his brothers in the privacy only to be frustrated even more by them bringing father into discussion.

And this pattern is repeated during their mission. Whatever Bi-Han will say, be it a remark about glory (a trivial detail) or wish for breaking from the past, Tomas and Kuai Liang will again and again either bring up tradition or talk about what their father would do.

Sub-Zero let their father die for what he thought was Lin Kuei’s best interest and in theory he should be finally free from the man’s influences. Including man’s teaching Bi-Han considered part of the reason why Lin Kuei was shackled and bound to unfair servitude.

Instead, even more than before everything revolved around the dead man to the point Sub-Zero outright asked if their father’s ghost possessed Kuai Liang (and Tomas?).

Because apparently his brothers didn’t have anything on their own to add into discussion - and frankly, they did not provide any real counterargument why Lin Kuei should stick to the centuries-old servitude to Earthrealm that didn’t come down to “tradition” and “father said so” - two things that Bi-Han already was in process or rejecting.

And then, when Bi-Han finally made his mind about allying with Shang Tsung what Kuai Liang did? Of course he talked about father

and I think this was the one too many mentions of father, the proverbial last straw that broke the camel's back. Telling the truth was not part of any great scheme, it wasn���t even about Kuai Liang itself, but it was a moment of catharsis for Bi-Han alone. 

We don’t have an idea when the previous Grandmaster died - Bi-Han could lie to his brothers about that accident for days, weeks, months or even years. The act of letting father die and lying about that burdened him, maybe even trapped more than he was before and Shang Tsung’s offer provided him both an occasion to cut off Lin Kuei ties with Liu Kang and finally to admit what he had done. The catharsis though doesn’t come from the act of admitting committed crime, because Bi-Han had no regrets about that at this point, but because he was so done with lying for Kuai Liang’s comfort and peace of mind...

...all so his younger brother could be safely tucked in his delusion about Lin Kuei’s honorable traditions; that Bi-Han if not loved then at least missed and grieved after their father as he and Tomas did; that they all were the happy family - still family - when Bi-Han’s wish for change overshadowed his sentiments for parent long ago.

I think that scene is just the breaking point of Bi-Han’s frustration - a frustration we were both told by Scorpion (“I knew Bi-Han's frustrations ran deep. But I never thought they could inspire such madness”) and showed in interaction between brothers preceding Sub-Zero’s betrayal. I doubt Bi-Han even planned to tell Kuai Liang truth, especially at this moment, but my guess is he just couldn’t take anymore hearing only father this, father that, again and again and again. Every person has a breaking point and I suspect the last Scorpion’s remark about father and how he would turn in his grave - especially this one about his death - is what made Bi-Han to spill out the truth straight into Kuai Liang’s face, cutting deep with the remark I lied because you couldn’t and still can see the truth.

It was no planned and probably the most sincere Bi-Han’s moment, because finally he was speaking his mind bluntly, finally escaping the trap of a lie he told Kuai Liang and Tomas to spare them from the brutal truth, but a trap that turned against him, because his brothers holded even more stubbornly to tradition and father’s teaching. Only unconsciously increasing Bi-Han’s frustration. 

Did Bi-Han believe that Kuai Liang and Tomas would support his claims? It sounds like a foolish assumption on his part, but I guess he still wanted his brothers on his side (even if the man has a problem with communicating that, I think?). Definitely wanted them more than he cared for father. And well, if Kuai Liang did not bring father in that moment, who knows, maybe Bi-Han would kept the lie alive for much longer?

How I feel about this character

Kim. Kiiiiiiim. Kim Kitsuragi is so good. He has exactly one cigarette per day — an unnecessary trial of will, it would be easier to quit — and if that doesn't illustrate his character I don't know what does. He's not an idealist anymore but he holds faith with the RCM despite everything. His wit is SO dry. Zero percent humidity on that man.

Lin would totally keep it a secret but well... cats don't like being in bags. I could totally see Mako finding out either through coincidence as in the fic or through his detective skills. Honestly, I'm open to many different interpretations of all the characters. I could see it going a few ways.

Mako is a complex guy and he has a past with both of these people. When he was a kid on the streets Lin was the embodiment of everything he hated. She was a wealthy, terrifying authority figure but he also probably respected her abilities. When he first met her there was tension he probably dismissed her as well frankly a bitch... a bitch that could kick ass but still a bitch. Lin to be frank probably knew of his checkered past and so while she can be empathetic I don't really think she was giving him the benefit of the doubt.

They both earned respect and admiration for each other throughout the events of season one. I think watching her search tirelessly for her men and hearing about Lin sacrificing herself for Tenzin's family as well as being broken out of jail by her really cemented a strong admiration for her. He sees her as someone selfless and competent. Lin for her part is forced by circumstance to cooperate with and tentatively trust this kid. It's not really stated how Lin escaped the equalists or if she was freed but I like the idea of her escaping on her own but being too injured to find the others. Mako is the one to find her and help her. He respects her when she is at her most vulnerable. This strengthens their bond.

She recognizes his abilities and offers him a job. Over years of working together they grow close. He truly sees her as a mother figure. He's probably accidentally called her mom a few times.

Zolt is a man he detests. At one point he respected him but older Mako is disillusioned he know he was exploited by the triple threats. Zolt reminds him of his terrible childhood and pisses him off endlessly.

Seeing them together has him in a rage. He is confused. Lin has always been a woman of integrity at all costs so her sleeping with Zolt of all people is a slap in the face. A betrayal. Also Mako sees her as his mother. No one wants to know about their mother's sex life let alone see them in that situation. Also Mako distrusts Zolt. He definitely believes Zolt is using Lin. Mako has seen the violence Zolt is capable of. He fears Lin being abused and wants to protect her.

In short his reaction is to murder Zolt on sight.

Long term he may get used to it but is still suspicious of Zolt. He's seen domestic abuse cases so he is furiously searching for signs whenever he sees the chief even though his fears are never founded he is still pissed and confused.

Why would they do this ?

Bi-Han never believed in those make believe tales like Santa and the Easter Bunny as a kid. I imagine Bi-Han never believed in that shit and his parents didn't bother trying to pretend they believed either. If they ever bothered giving gifts for Christmas(assuming they celebrated it) they probably just said they gave the present to him without pretending that Santa did it.

Its why if little Bi-Han was ever around random children during holidays he wouldn't understand why everyone got excited over a mall Santa and waiting in line to take pictures.

It is hard for Bi-Han to believe in something he had no chance to experience in the first place. He was chosen at birth to be Lin Kuei, and depending on timeline, either kidnapped to carry on the Sub-Zero’s legacy or trained from a young age to be Earthrealm’s defender. I don’t think he even had a chance to be around random children that were just children, especially as in both timelines, the clan's existence is keep as secret.

Bi-Han grew up in either an assassin clan (with no real childhood) or as the heir to Lin Kuei, and none of those two versions of Lin Kuei had any reason to believe and/or pass stories about Santa or Easter Bunny - maybe beside educational knowledge so the warriors working undercover knew what those are. I mean, the new timeline Lin Kuei brothers literally know a god as their clan has served Liu Kang for centuries. Why would they care for tales like that? What Bi-Han was told, at least in MK1’s timeline, are stories about Lin Kuei’s epic battles.

Grab a coffee and seat down. ☕️ — I have three different answers to this, organized by category, because I can't simply just choose one Beifong, so.. ◇ My favorite based on "emotional attachment" is definitely Suyin (kinda of an unpopular choice). I simply can't help but love every aspect of her, she's so beautiful, bright and collected - I love how against all odds she overcame her traumas the healthiest way she could, rebuilt her whole life, never gave up on reconnecting with the people she loved and missed after all, etc. I have an immense amount of respect for her - she's the personification of growth, maturity and forgiveness. And I love that for her for many reasons! Her adult self reminds me a bit of Sokka in a way, that probably helped to establish my "emotional attachment" towards her as well! ◇ My favorite based on "complexity and strength" would be obviously Lin. Lin is the character I validate and understand the most too, I enjoy analyzing her whole story and personality. I'm a Psychology student, so it makes sense to me that I loved her instantly and so much (apart from being a Toph seed), she was presented to us as the typical tough character ofc but I was amazed how many layers she turned out to have, how profound and complicated her traumas, choices and path turned out to be. I love and respect Lin for reasons that are completely different from Su (they are completely opposites). Lin's psychological strength (physical too, ofc), courage and endlessly emphaty always get me. I would fight anyone just to protect her! ◇ And of course, my number one girl.. Ultimate Favorite in the entire franchise.. the ORIGINAL Beifong; TOPH!! I don't even think I need to explain myself on this one, do I?? Everything I listed about her daughters comes from Toph Beifong and even her imperfections are kinda perfect to me, she is one of the most brilliant characters in the franchise hand down. In fact I believe their daughters inherited a lot of Toph's values, beliefs and characteristics. They are her legacy in a way, probably part of the reason I love them so much too. But anyways.

For Su; Suyin/Baatar Sr. ◇ For Lin; Linzin & Kyalin, maybe Linzumi too — I do think Lin & Tenzin are soulmates who could never be though (This is actually a can of worms, 'cause I have A LOT to say regarding this entire ship!). ◇ And for Toph; Tokka yesterday, Tokka today and Tokka for always!♡ I can't actually picture Toph with anyone else, for some reason. I tried (with her other love interests and all).. But It's just not it for me. Kanto we've never even seen & Satoru was more of a simp - nothing against it but it kills the mood for me that he's a fanboy who'd spend their whole relationship praising her & kissing the ground she steps on, not into that for Toph (or any human being) in a relationship. — While with Sokka (even tho it was just a childhood crush & he was a bit older) I think they were a perfect match for a future relationship; They were opposites in the right amount, but also pretty similar (in terms of sense of humor and some values). Not to mention the fact that Sokka would never pick fights with her (not that I remember), whenever Katara would ask him to intervene in their fights he'd be like "Nah, leave me out of this" and I do think that that's what intrigued Toph, he would listen to her & validate her feelings since Day 1. Then we cut to TLOK; at Yakone's trial when Sokka is giving that sentenced speech and start praising Toph for developing the Metalbending skill by herself; his facial expression immediately changes to something more affectionate (genuinely smiling at her), then Old Toph telling Korra about when she taught Aang earthbending and feeling the need to mention what happened to Sokka that day (should've been insignificant, but she kept that memory from that day) and then Suyin & Lin's small details or characteristics that were related to Sokka in ATLA (Like their usage of adapted metal swords to fight, Su's collection of meteorites, how Sokka was always praising Toph for inventing the Metalbending and later Su building a whole city out of it where Toph's achievement would be praised and immortalized for once and all, not to mention Su & some members of the family looking like Sokka, I'm pretty sure that was purposely done by the creators in a way to keep Sokka's design, idk & it makes me the happiest that it was done in the Beifong family). It's impossible not to acknowledge the impact Sokka had on Toph, they truly loved each other and loved being around each other. Romantically or not, canon or not - it's impossible for me not to ship them.♡
