Type 2 diabetes is the most common nowadays. Cause by insulin resistance. This occurs when either the insulin produced by a person’s pancreas doesn’t function as it should or the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin. As a result, insulin is unable to do its job, which is to move glucose (sugar) obtained from your diet, into the muscle cells. As a result, your blood sugar levels (BSL) rise.

Another effect is that the resistance prompts the pancreas to increase the production of insulin. Uncontrolled, long-term type 2 diabetes is known to cause a number of health complications, including, Heart damage, Stroke, Vision problems, Kidney damage, Damage to the Central Nervous System (CNS), Digestive ailments, Infertility in both sexes etc.
How diabetes affect memory loss?
If people with diabetes have high blood sugar levels and it's unmanaged, it can be very dangerous for them. As result damage body organs. If such damage occurs, it will cause cognitive problems and a condition known as vascular dementia. There is also some research that points to a close connection between insulin signaling and glucose metabolism in the brain. When insulin receptors in the brain senses an imbalance in insulin levels in the body which typically, as we have seen, happens with diabetics it increases the risk of AD significantly.

Cognitive Changes As people age, there are three main types of cognitive changes that can impair or alter cognitive functioning: mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's. All of these syndromes are more severe than the normal decline that is expected with aging, though they do not all reach the severity of dementia. Dementia refers to the "the loss of cognitive functioning- thinking, remembering, and reasoning- and behavior abilities, to such an extent that it interferes with a person's daily life and activities" (NIH, 2013). While there are some similarities between these three conditions, there are also significant differences between the three syndromes. These differences can impact treatment options and also help predict impact on the patient and the family. MCI is an intermediate stage, which features a more significant cognitive decline than that expected with normal aging, but is not as severe as full-blown dementia. "It can involve problems with memory, language, thinking and judgment that are greater than normal age-related changes" (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012). In addition to the expected memory problems, some symptoms may include losing one's train of thought, feeling easily overwhelmed, becoming more impulsive, and having difficulty with navigating familiar environments (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012). In addition, there can be an emotional side to MCI, and those experiencing MCI may be prone to: depression, anxiety, apathy, irritability, and aggression (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012). While these symptoms can slow functioning, they do not generally interfere with day-to-day activities. However, both the patient and any caregivers and family members should be aware that MCI increases the risk of developing a more severe form of dementia. There are multiple causes for MCI, although it may be caused, at least in part, by the same type of brain changes seen in other forms of dementia. MCI may progress to other diseases linked to dementia, may become stable, and, in some cases, may even revert. In addition to aging, which is the primary risk factor for MCI, those with the APOE-e4 gene are also at higher risk for the disease. In addition, several other lifestyle factors or preexisting conditions can increase one's risk of MCI, including: diabetes, smoking, depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being sedentary, and not engaging in stimulating activities (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012). Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in older adults. It is a brain disease that is both irreversible and progressive. While Alzheimer's can onset in younger adults, it primarily appears after 60. The root cause of Alzheimer's disease is unknown, though genetics appear to increase susceptibility, particularly the presence of the APOE-e4 gene. Moreover, the damage to the brain appears to begin approximately a decade prior to symptom onset. These changes result in "abnormal deposits of proteins form amyloid plaques and tau tangles throughout the brain" (NIH, 2013). This impacts the functioning ability of neurons. The damage spreads to the hippocampus, which impacts memories, and, as neurons die, the affected brain regions shrink. MCI is one of the early warnings signs of Alzheimer's. Other cognitive declines, such as problems with "word-finding, vision/spatial issues, and impaired reasoning or judgment" can also be early warning signs of Alzheimer's disease (NIH, 2013). Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, so patients and their families need to prepare for the changes that will occur if the patient lives to the advanced stage of the disease. Moreover, monitoring of the patient is important to assess functioning ability. In mild Alzheimer's diseases, there is increasing memory loss, an impairment of judgment, and some mood or personality changes (NIH, 2013). In moderate Alzheimer's disease, the disease impacts daily functioning, familiar people may become unrecognizable, and the patient may begin to suffer from delusions, hallucinations, and paranoia (NIH, 2013). In severe Alzheimer's disease, the patient can no longer communicate and is completely dependent upon caregivers (NIH, 2013). Parkinson's disease is associated with aging, but can occur at any age. It is not a form of dementia, but is the result of brain changes. It "results from the gradual degeneration of nerve cells in the portion of the midbrain that controls body movements" (Selenick, 2013). The initial symptoms of Parkinson's are subtle and may include weakness or stiffness in a limb or fine trembling when muscles are at rest (Selenick, 2013). The shaking or tremors worsen and spread, muscles may stiffen, and both coordination and balance deteriorate (Selenick, 2013). As Parkinson's progresses, functioning can be impacted. Parkinson's disease has a variety of different causes: adverse prescription drug reactions, illegal drug usage, exposure to environmental toxins, stroke, thyroid or parathyroid disorders, head trauma, brain tumors, hydrocephalus, and encephalitis are all linked to Parkinson's disease (Selenick, 2013). Parkinson's disease does not have a cure, but medications can help alleviate symptoms. Patients and caregivers need to be prepared for the disease to grow more severe over time and for the way that the disease impacts movement, balance, and coordination to impact the patient's ability to provide self-care. For example, falls are a significant risk for patients with Parkinson's. MCI, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's are three types of cognitive changes that can impact people as they age. MCI and Alzheimer's both involve impairments to cognitive functioning, while the brain changes in Parkinson's results in impairment in muscle coordination. All three disorders can worsen over time and require patients and their families to begin thinking about treatment options and ensuring that the patient's living situation is adequate for the patient's current disease stage. Research shows sugar shrinks the brain and messes up memory

In the 1980s sugar was thought to give you extra energy. Lucozade, a liquid form of glucose, was advertised as ‘energy for the human race.’ Yet, new studies are showing that too much glucose, and especially fructose, over time starves the brain of energy, leading to both memory loss and brain shrinkage. These two sugars interfere with the energy factories within cells, called mitochondria, and deprive the brain of the energy it needs to function properly. The link between diabetes and dementia is well known - those with diabetes have four times the risk of dementia. Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a long-term measure of glucose bound to red blood cells (haemoglobin) and is used by doctors to diagnose diabetes and monitor its therapy. HbA1c is a measure of damage produced by sugar spikes on red blood cells; a HbA1c of 6.5% or greater is diagnostic of diabetes. But long before this, in what is usually considered to be the ‘normal range’ teenagers with HbA1c above 5.4% show cognitive decline and shrinkage of the hippocampus in the central area of the brain compared to those with lower HbA1c levels. Shrinkage of the hippocampus is the hallmark of Alzheimer’s and is used to diagnose the disease. A new study shows that 40-year-old adults with so-called normal glucose levels, but at the higher end of the normal range, have increased their risk of Alzheimer’s by 15%. Furthermore, “In teenagers with raised, but normal levels of HbA1c, there is clear evidence of the same kind of memory problems, and the same areas of brain shrinkage seen in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease” says Robert Lustig, Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at University of California, San Francisco. “Keeping your HbA1c below 5.4% with a no-added sugar diet, and for some a low-carbohydrate diet, is one of the most direct ways you can protect your brain at any age.” says Lustig. The dementia prevention charity foodforthebrain.org has launched a home pinprick blood test to measure HbA1c. “Insulin resistance, the direct consequence of too much glucose in the bloodstream, ends up leading to mitochondrial dysfunction, starving the brain of energy with consequent loss of concentration and memory.” says nutritionist and psychologist Patrick Holford, CEO of the charity. “We are calling for people to test their cognitive function with our free online test and measure their HbA1c with a home test kit, so we can really find out when problems occur and how to prevent cognitive decline.” Over 400,000 people have taken the charity’s free online cognitive function test which tells you your future dementia risk and what to do to lower it. Professor Robert Lustig thinks the problem got even worse when the food industry switched from sucrose, derived from cane, to high-fructose corn syrup, derived from corn; “High-fructose corn syrup is not more biologically evil; it’s economically evil, because it’s half the price of sucrose, so it found its way into all sorts of foods.” “Too much fructose is dumbing us down. It’s also linked to aggressive behaviour... The key message is to test HbA1c early if it is over 5.4% and act to bring it down by cutting right back on foods and drinks with added sugar including carbohydrate-rich foods such as bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, and especially fruit juice.
