Hey!
It’s been a hot minute since I last posted, well, anything.
The tl;dr is that I had a lot of stuff going on at the same exact time. I physically wasn’t able to make content. That was until recently.
After my life started clearing up a bit (and after taking some time to relax), I finally started to create content again.
Yesterday (July 20th), my brand new series, Distro Dive, premiered its first ever episode. I honestly thought that it was going to flop immediately.
That, however, did not happen. The reception was so much better than I could have imagined. I’m so grateful for everyone that watched it.
This means that there will definitely be more episodes coming! (Something that wasn’t guaranteed)
This doesn’t mean that “Papas Films” is dead by any means. I am currently planning on releasing more videos over there.
When?
Well… whenever. That’s the honest truth. I want to post something because I like it and want to post it. Not because I “have” to post it.
I just wanted to pop in here to say that I’m officially coming back. Just, don’t get your hopes up that I’m going to be posting everyday. That’s not me.
I hope that you understand.
Have a good one and see you soon!

Truth Scrapper FAQ!
📚 What is Truth Scrapper? Truth Scrapper is a romantic fantasy mystery visual novel from the creator of In Stars and Time, coming to PC! Check out our website for more info 😁💖📚
📚 What is the gameplay like? As a visual novel, much of your time in Truth Scrapper is spent reading dialogue and interacting with characters. You will be able to make choices that influence the outcome of the story, and click to explore certain scenes or use specific items 💭⌛📚
📚 How long is it? We think maybe ten hours, but the game isn’t done yet, so we do not know! 🤔⌚❓
📚 How many endings are there? Truth Scrapper will have THREE unique endings/routes, including one “true” ending 💝🧵📚
📚 What is it made with? Truth Scrapper is made with Ren’Py 🥰💻💃
📚 Who is making it? Adrienne Bazir, aka insertdisc5, creator of In Stars and Time, Serre, and other things! We are also working with contractors for marketing, production, music, and SFX! (A complete list of credits will be available in the game.) 📸✨🎨
📚 Is there a demo? While there is currently no playable demo for Truth Scrapper, there will be one in the future! Be sure you sign up for our mailing list and follow our socials to be notified when it drops 💌📪📬
📚 When is it releasing? When it's done! 🤣😅😃
📚 What are the content ratings and trigger warnings? You'll be able to find more information about specific content and trigger warnings on our website closer to release. Truth Scrapper deals with some tough themes and mature content, though it is not a sexually explicit or significantly gory/violent title 😮😲😨
📚 Okay, but what do you mean by “toxic lesbians” in the marketing copy? Truth Scrapper is a game that features grown up characters with complicated feelings and lives who don’t always make the best decisions for themselves or one another. It is not a grim, dark game, but don’t expect to see a cast that would get a good grade in therapy here… 😁🔪😱
📚 Is this a sequel/prequel/at all related to In Stars and Time? insertdisc5 says: "Nope! Truth Scrapper is a whole new game, in a whole new setting! Of course, as you will discover, they will share many themes, but that’s just because I made it. I’m very grateful for the whole lot of love people have given Siffrin and the gang, and I hope in time you’ll find a spot in your heart for my terrible terrible girls."
📚 Betz uses he/they! Are they a girl? The three of them are some flavor of genderfluid. They are not necessarily women. But they are Girls! We hope that explains it 😁😄🥰
📚 How do you pronounce the main characters' names?
Sosotte: So-SUH-t
Amour: Ah-MOO-r
Betz: BET-ss
📚 What platforms is it coming to? Truth Scrapper will be released on PC, Mac and Linux, specifically for Steam, as well as other potential pc-only digital outlets such as itch.io! 😀🎉🎫
📚 Is the game coming to console? Never say never, but at this time, we have no plans to bring Truth Scrapper to console. We are a small team (one person, plus contractors!), and we want to be mindful of our resources. If this changes, we promise to tell you! 🎮🕹🃏
📚 What languages will it be in? Currently the only confirmed language is English, but we will be evaluating our costs and options for localization throughout development. This game will have a lot (a LOT) of words, so while we would love to bring it to as many languages as possible, we have to be mindful of our resources. Thank you for understanding! 💦💦💦
📚 How can I support the game? Be sure and wishlist Truth Scrapper on Steam, and follow us on socials! 😍🥰💕
#truth scrapper#faq#I posted the funny bit of the FAQ but forgot to post the actual FAQ!#ts important notice

Bit of a long video but worth a watch.
TL;DW though is that hidden in the Terms and Conditions for Google's AI Labs is a nice little poison pill that says they get access to your entire Google Drive if you opt in.
So if you're an author of some type and you keep your unpublished works in your G-Drive that means an AI will get to scrape all of it and by opting in you will have given them permission to it. The content creator goes on to predict that Google is going to let out their own streaming service where the scripts, and potentially the art if it's animated, will be almost or entirely AI generated using that scraped data as a baseline and the authors/artist's who's work was essentially stolen in its most raw form to crib from will have zero way of fighting Google on that in our current legal system.
This is of course right in the middle of the writers and actors strike where we're seeing just what lengths studios will go to in order to screw everyone but themselves.
They go on to recommend that if you keep any creative or personal works on Google Drive that you pull it off as soon as possible and delete your entire Drive. They acknowledge that of course this doesn't mean Google really deleted the data but if you do it before they start compulsory opting everyone in there's a chance your work might get overlooked. They also recommend several free editing programs that aren't run by corporations like Google with LibreOffice (the default office program of most Linux distros) being named.
Finally they go over methods of shaming Google which I feel like you just have to watch for comedies sake so I won't describe them in full.
Now this is from me: I know the majority of people don't have the ability to build and manage a big archive just for themselves, but if you're a creative NOW IS THE TIME to educate yourself on what you can do to protect your works. Cloud storage was always iffy at best, but with AI scraping entering the mix it's now downright malignant. Get a bunch of thumb drives, buy some external hard drives, if you have the money buy a pre-built NAS, and if you really want to get into learn how to build your own NAS. These are the old ways before cloud and they're coming back again, more important than ever.

When you finally quit your dead-end job and move back to your mother's house in the ever-peaceful town of Faybourne, you think things could only get better. However, the moment you set foot in your childhood home, a harrowing nightmare long forgotten appears to haunt you once more.
A tower that crumbles in the vastness of a bleeding sky. A voice that mourns and yearns for something.
Torn away from your peaceful life and thrown into a world of danger and deceit, you are at the mercy of the Seven Sovereigns of Limbo. Navigate the Realm Between as it faces an impending cataclysm that threatens to swallow you and those you love whole.
Whether you fall in love or in disgrace... is up to you.
Lost in Limbo features seven love interests and a wide cast of secondary characters.
VA: Patrick 'Pat' Langner
God and creator of Limbo, Father Pride has witnessed eons of change in both his world and yours. Aware of the delicate barrier that keeps each world separate and whole, it is his duty to both protect his people and safeguard the endless knowledge his immortality has granted him.
The Father of All is beloved by his family and worshiped as an invincible leader by the inhabitants of Limbo, but he ultimately remains removed from others; a mysterious, unreachable idol. The life of a deity of unfathomable power is solitary, and you can't help but wonder if there's any trace of humanity in him.
Can you truly trust a being whose power is beyond human comprehension, or are you just another tool for him?
VA: Brian Vaughn
His father's promises of glory, and legends of a destiny full of wonders awaiting him, drove Amon to build Dagalis, his city, as a mirror image of himself. Flamboyant, free, and absolutely magnificent—Amon lives his immortal life to the very fullest, often ignoring the consequences.
When you fall into his care, you become the Dragon’s newest toy; he is determined to dazzle you, and the temptation to surrender to him is overwhelming. However, Amon can only look away from the ticking bombs within Dagalis for so long, and you will inevitably be dragged down with him if the worst comes to pass.
Can you rely on each other to save yourselves, or is your love destined to burn you and Dagalis down?
VA: Silvairre Devereaux
Raeya earned her title of Praefectus, leader of Limbo’s military forces and safekeeper of the realm, after centuries of hard work and devotion. Her oath to protect the people of Limbo is an extension of herself, one she wields in the battlefield against the voidbound and against anyone who dares to defile what she believes is just.
However, the truth behind the realm's darkest times will soon put Raeya's loyalty to the test, and with it, her ability to keep you out of harm's way.
When the inevitable cruelty of the Realm Between unfolds before you, what will you be willing to sacrifice to save what you love the most?
VA: Abi Kumar
As ominous as his alias may sound, there has never been a kinder person in all of Limbo than Master Gael. However, rumors tainting the Master's image have begun to spread, and the streets murmur of a plot to overthrow him. Master Gael is facing a crisis in his mandate, and with your unexpected arrival, strategy is more important than ever.
You are met with an offer that's hard to refuse; if you play your part as Gael’s fiancée and help him secure his win in the upcoming Master elections once more, a ritual to return you to your world may be within reach.
But with powerful individuals keeping an eye on every movement of the Master and his lover, what are the chances of obtaining a victory for you both?
VA: Aaron Moy
Stripped of their name and shunned after commiting treason, the Sovereign now known as Lord Envy resides alone in the Black Citadel, forgotten by those who fled the city and hated by the ones who refused to leave.
It doesn't take you too long to realize you two have nothing in common besides the fact that you hate each other to death. Envy is harsh, impertinent and unmoved by your plight. However, behind that mask of hatred lies a being that has been hurt almost beyond repair, and their call for help is too painful to ignore.
Can you break the walls they have built around themselves for centuries, or will you remain a prisoner in his castle for all eternity?
VA: Zaria Weems
Ara seems ready to be your ally from the very beginning. Her desire to help you get back to your family seems genuine, and her fervent will to act as your protector impresses you. She believes you are the key to summoning her childhood hero, The Wanderer of Worlds, a mythical figure that is able to walk in every world to bring forth peace.
Ara's passionate personality is incredibly charming, but it hides an ambition that seems almost insatiable...and that may come with problems that are too big for you two.
What will you do when you find out how far she's willing to go?
VA: Francfil Pontañeles
Seen as an ‘afterthought’ by the people of Limbo, no one has ever expected anything from Xal, not even himself. When you end up in his care, you fear you're going to spend the rest of your life watching him tinker with gadgets, but Xal swiftly proves you wrong when he discovers a ritual that could send you back home in no time.
However, a crucial mistake turns the tables, and you're not the only one to reappear in Faybourne. With no fearless gods with incredible powers around to aid you, you'll have to face the consequences your disappearance left behind...and somehow help Xal go back to his siblings.
But what if Xal doesn't want to leave—and you don't want him to go?
Lázaro and Cécile's routes are Side Routes that will be produced after the Main Love Interests'. As they were not unlocked via Kickstarter, they'll take time to become available!
VA: Callum Sanders
After your encounter in Master Lysander's occult shop, you hoped you would never see those golden eyes again. Destiny, as always, is a capricious thing.
Your rocky return to Faybourne not only brings more questions to the table; it also gives you the opportunity to cross paths with the person who started it all. However, as you confront Lázaro—as they graciously introduce themself— they pretend they don't know anything about what happened in that suffocating room that summer morning.
You refuse to let them go that easily after what they did to you, and soon enough you're dragged into Lázaro's personal hell.
When your world quickly proves to be as dangerous as the realm of Limbo, will you trust the person who started it all?
youtube
VA: TBA
When you first meet Cécile, Gael's bodyguard, you can't stop from shivering under the gaze of his bloodthirsty eyes. The Master's Dog, as everyone whispers behind his back, smells of death and despair; it is all he has known since he was born. Revenge on those who snatched his soul away from him is the only thing in his mind—only after serving his Master, who he so greatly worships.
He has no interest in you. In fact, he openly dislikes you. You can tell by the way he looks at you; if it were his choice, his hands would already be around your neck. And yet, you can't deny the attraction pulling you towards him, oblivious of how dangerous it would be if he were to worship you instead of his Master.
Can you survive the love of an obsessed killer, or will you meet your end at the raw passion of his hands?
✦ The MC is written as a young adult who is at least 21 years old. The player can headcanon their character as any age they desire, but every route is written so the MC is of an age similar to that of their chosen love interest, except for Father Pride who is older than the MC.
✦ The MC is a strong-willed individual who isn't afraid to jump into action. In the game, you'll be able to channel these characteristics in different ways. River is funny, kind and a bit too stubborn—but you choose how to manage those traits and whether to let them shine or not. The game will remember, so if you are not too athletic, maybe hitting that monster with a chair isn't a very good idea.
✦ The MC also has some default tastes, hobbies and memories. During the game, you'll be able to personalize how the Main Character feels about their interests, add new ones, or reflect about how the past affected them. The characters will remember this.
✦ The MC doesn't have an established appearance, therefore, you won't see them in game.
The beautifully deadly world of Limbo, The Realm Between. Woven in the eternal canvas that is the Great Void, it is a breathing world that lives in constant symbiosis with those who dwell therein. It rests in the custody of the Seven Sovereigns of Limbo, immortal guardians of unbelievable strength.
Few are those who venture past the Beyond; none have ever returned However, Limbo’s land is deteriorating fast. The balance that holds the threads of life are at the cusp of being consumed by the Midnight Tower, an entity beyond sense and reason that has grown dangerously close to the barrier between worlds. The voidbound, creatures made from the essence of nightmares, are stalking the cities closer to the Tower’s domain, leaving behind nothing but chaos and decay.
Explore the Seven Circles of Limbo and its seven capital cities, and get to know its people, their customs and their culture, inspired by Spanish provinces and cities such as the Valencian Community, Andalucía, Galicia and Aragón. Enjoy the unique animated backgrounds, whether you're lost in a harrowing swamp or just wandering through a boisterous main street.
✦ Seven love interests with independent routes and different kinds of romance. Live a passionate, mature and erotic experience with Amon, or a first love romance with Xal.
✦ Around 80+ hours of gameplay total. Each route will be around 15+ hours.
✦ Customizable Main Character (full name and pronouns changeable between he/him, she/her or they/them).
✦ Approximately 6 endings per character. Escape from the claws of despair with your loved one or succumb to the pressure of a world breaking to pieces...or perhaps something in the middle.
✦ A mature, sex-positive narrative point of view. Lost in Limbo treats consensual sex as a natural, integral and fun part of the game. The game therefore includes textually and slightly explicit love scenes, and the player has the option not to engage, stop or skip these scenes anytime.*
✦ Player choices can shape the Main Character's personality, traits, likes & dislikes, etc.
✦ A wide cast of side characters to make the world feel alive, each one of them with their opinion and relationship with the Main Character.
✦ A compendium to keep track of events, important information, etc.
*An exception of this is Amon's route, centered in the sexual tension between him and the MC. His sexual scenes with the Main Character are core to the story and therefore, happen no matter what. The player can still skip these scenes.
In Lost in Limbo, not everything is as it seems. Every route offers pieces of a much bigger puzzle ready to be solved, but small details mattter. Characters will remember how you treat them, what you tell them, and what you don't. Keeping your cards close to your chest may be wise, but in a world where you don't have the upper hand, choosing who to trust is key to survive.
✦ There will be four different choice systems that will give shape to your playthrough:
Trust Points centered around your love interest and the side characters; a low level of trust can translate into bad endings*.
Plot-driving choices that will shape the story and its possible endings, as well as the final fate of the characters.
Personality choices that will determine the nature of the Main Character's relationship with their love interest, as well as how the MC reacts to certain events, their abilities, hobbies, etc.
Flavor choices! These don't impact the game directly, but are there for the main objective of the game: having fun! Do you want ice cream, or perhaps a caramelized apple?
*In Lost in Limbo, there's not only one correct answer and one wrong answer. There's different ways of earning trust points without having to stick for the "one and only right answer", and mistakes can be redeemed...sometimes.
Please note that this may be subjected to changes in the future, but always keeping in mind player's opinions and always in favor of improving the game experience.
We'll first start working on an extended demo / prologue that will be offered for free. This will include an overhaul of sprites, several secondary characters mentioned in our first demo, etc. After that, we'll move to the character routes, and the first episode of each one of them will be offered for free to the public.
Two routes will always be worked on at the same time to make sure they complement each other well. The order in which we'll work on the routes is as follows.
✦ Amon / Gael > Ara / Xal > Envy / Raeya > Father Pride
We estimate that with our current team, development for the seven routes will take three years. Therefore, our first release plan aims for a full release in 2027.
Please remember there's only four of us; our writer is also our programmer, our artists are in charge of all the art departments, etc.
As stated above, outsourcing would speed up this process, but we want to be cautious with our release plan. If everything goes faster than expected, all the better!

Gecko’s list of free video games you should play right now
Hi I’m gecko I like video games and I like not paying 60 dollars for them so here’s a list of some free games I’ve unearthed and liked. Enjoy
(most of these are small, more obscure games made by a few people or even just one person, so support the creators if you can!! Some of these do have a pay what you want model)
Hikeback (Itch.io)
You see a hitchhiker flagging you down during a long, lonely drive through the countryside. No matter how you choose to handle the situation, you end up back on that road. And then again. And again. And again, until you find a way to escape a loop of violence and self-sabotage. Hikeback is a visual novel inspired by the fable of the frog and the scorpion, and it takes about an hour to reach the ending. It’s available on Windows, Mac, Linux, and browser, and there’s a detailed list of content warnings on the game’s itch.io page. One of my strongest recommendations, Hikeback is an incredible experience, and it was made in only ten days!!
Purrgatory (Itch.io) (Steam)
Find ways to pass the time in an inexplicably cat-themed but otherwise pretty dull afterlife, and befriend its other inhabitants. Purrgatory can hit hard when it wants to, but it’s mostly a relaxed point and click game that takes about a few hours if you want the true ending (which you do). And also I really don’t like recommending things going “it’s rep!!” and not elaborating on what the thing is actually about, but Purrgatory does have a mostly explicitly LGBT+ cast and Korean characters by a Korean artist. It’s been a few years since I played Purrgatory, but I remember it was an incredible experience, and since then, even more people can play it because it’s been fully translated into Spanish and Simplified Chinese! It’s available on Windows and browser.
How Fish is Made (Itch.io) (Steam)
How Fish is Made includes incredible retro-style graphics, a sardine flopping around in a machine with a choice to make, a singing, cane-wielding, tophat-wearing, tongue-eating parasitic isopod, and a free expansion/trailer for the studio’s next game that’s like if Katamari Damacy was evil and also had fish in it. That’s the best I can do for a summary. How Fish is Made is available on Windows and takes about 30-45 minutes, but will itch your brain for much longer.
Stop Burying Me Alive, Beautiful (Itch.io)
A visual novel in which you are stuck between trying to convince your girlfriend you are not dead and she should stop burying you alive, and playing rat-themed card games with a woman you find living underground. The game doesn’t always do a great job walking the line between comedy and horror, but there’s some strong writing depicting a failing relationship and very strong artwork that makes this an easy recommendation. Stop Burying Me Alive, Beautiful is on Windows, Mac, Linux, and browser, and takes about half an hour.
Caper in the Castro (Internet Archive)
Ok this one is pretty different, but fuck it, it was originally released for free in 1989 (with a recommendation to make a donation to charity instead) and is still free so I’m including it. Not enough people are aware that you can play the first known video game by and about gay people on your computer right now for free and it has that classic adventure game bullshit sometimes but it’s extremely playable and also funny as shit. Like it’s not just cool history it’s actually fun (sorry Gayblade). You play as a lesbian private detective named Tracker McDyke looking for your missing drag queen friend and you can get most of the doors in the game open by shooting them. People have made full walkthroughs for this game and how to get it working if you have trouble so there’s no excuse. Play Caper in the Castro.
Under a Star Called Sun (Itch.io) (Liminal Magazine)
A browser game made in Bitsy that’s extremely simple and only a few minutes long, but that’s all it needs to create a succinct, gut-wrenching depiction of grief.
Hotel Infinity (Itch.io)
If you need more short Bitsy games you can play in your browser that are about death, you’re out of luck after this because I’ve only got the two. Hotel Infinity is more lighthearted, tasking you with checking in on your ghostly hotel guests, and helping one check out. It’s simple, but sweet and affecting.
Water Womb World (Itch.io)
Back to marine life-themed horror. Water Womb World is about a man’s obsessive search for the Garden of Eden leading him to the bottom of the ocean. There’s a few brief moments of annoyance in the gameplay, but the atmosphere and visuals are fantastic. Fantastic enough I bought the shirt, because I like cool shirts. It's available for Mac and Windows, and takes about 15 minutes.
Hyperhell (Itch.io) (Steam)
A rogue-like bullet hell with a hyperpop soundtrack. It’s a mess, but in a good way. A run can (allegedly, I am not very good at bullet hells and I wasn’t able to get all the way to the end) be under ten minutes, but the game is very replayable with its different characters, weapons, bosses, and DDR and fishing minigames. You might have heard of this one already because maia has a cameo in it, but it really is a fun, if slightly painful for your eyes, time. It’s available on Windows.
Magicafe HD (Itch.io)
Under a technicality, I haven’t played this one yet, but that’s because I played the original text-based version of this game and I didn’t know the dev had converted it to a full visual novel until right now when I went to recommend the original. I’m certain this version is even better! It’s a cute, simple visual novel about a girl trying to get to her job at a magical girl themed cafe, while dealing with the struggles of secretly also being an actual magical girl. Available on Windows, and lasts about half an hour. The original is available on browser here if you’re interested.
Dedz0ne (Itch.io)
Ok, wrapping up on a weird one since this isn’t really a universal recommendation. Dedz0ne is a Yume Nikki/Splatoon fangame inspired by Dedf1sh’s backstory and the atmosphere of Octo Expansion in general. It came out before Side Order so it’s not accurate to it, but it’s a really neat game with great visuals and atmosphere. It’s available on Windows
And that’s it for now. There will probably be a sequel someday because I am unable to stop digging through free games. Or maybe a collection of not free but extremely cheap games (like under five bucks) I like. Who knows! I hope you found something that catches your eye here!

Worse than Trolls: Engagement Optimisers, Tourists, Socialisers, and Enablers
As I previously explained, most online content moderation falls under I-know-it-when-I-see-it. There is very little else to say. People know spam when they see it, and I don't need to define what spam is. Spammers know they are spamming, and are unable and thankfully unwilling to argue your moderation decisions.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are ever so slightly corrosive behaviours than can destabilise an online community in the long term, often without the perpetrators knowing it, or at least without bad faith, without ill intent.
Engagement Optimisers
Users naturally optimise engagement by responding to feedback. When posting memes and cat pictures is rewarded, users post more cat pictures. When posting memes is rewarded, users post more memes.
If your users start to do this on purpose, you might have a problem. For example, somebody might notice that clickbait titles lead to more click-through in forum threads. The people who give their threads vague and mysterious titles get more replies. The people who add a call to action to their OP get more replies: Please share your opinions in the comments below. The people who ask broad, open-ended and opinion-based questions are more likely to get more replies: What programming language should I learn?
If somebody says something contentious or inflammatory by accident, that's fine. You morally can't fault them for sincerely held beliefs or misconceptions, or for soliciting a broader base of opinion. Only when done on purpose, and systematically, it becomes dangerous.
You may end up with a situation where power users learn to play the game and play it better and better, at least better than most users. This can give the people who learned to game the system outsized influence, even when there is no algorithm or karma or no way to spend the karma, because they gain more mindshare and notoriety.
You may also experience a systemic change, because many or most users catch on, and start modifying their behaviour and post different content in order to get noticed.
Still there is the possibility that your users, through group dynamics nobody is consciously exploiting, reward and promote mostly cat pictures and stupid puns, even though no individual user comes to your forum for stupid puns and cat pictures.
Early on in the history of Reddit, this was recognised as a major problem. You could farm upvotes by posting something like "DAE eat chocolate ice cream?", "Upvote if you're going to vote for Ron Paul", or "Linux sucks! There are no good text editors!"
Reddit tried to curb this, somewhat unsuccessfully at first, then more successfully, but in the long run, they lost the battle against their own user base and entropy itself.
Compare this with YouTube, where a call to action is not just allowed, but encouraged by YouTube itself. It's regularly part of the latest set of official tips for creators to grow their audiences. YouTubers thus say "What are your opinions on this topic? Let me know in the comments below!" or "Please like and subscribe".
Tourists
Tourists come in to make drive-by comments in flame war threads. Tourists google a question, find your forum, post a single question, and leave forever when they get the right answer. Tourists come in from Reddit. Tourists don't play the game. Tourists don't read the forum. Tourists don't read the FAQ.
You can't really punish people for coming to your site or channel and making their first comment. I mean, you can, but then they will definitely not come back.
Churn is bad. Tourists are churn personified. If most content comes from tourists, then your community culture is defined by tourists. You lose the ability to shape the culture of your site. It's easy to deter tourists, but it's hard to do so without also deterring people who would otherwise have become proper contributors or community members.
If somebody joins your web site, doesn't read the rules, doesn't read the FAQ, creates more work for the moderators, and is a minor annoyance to the established users without ever rising to the level of a serious rule violation, it's easy for that person to say "We all have to start somewhere" or "You'll never attract new people if you keep enforcing the rules like that."
If you have rules about cross-posting or proper spelling and punctuation, you have to be firm. You cannot retreat every time somebody who hasn't read the rules asks "Why are you so mean to me?"
On the other hand, I remember multiple times when I hopped in an IRC to ask a question like "Is this a known bug? Should I wait for the next release?" or "Does anybody want to collaborate on a game jam next month? Is anybody considering joining Ludum Dare?" only to be told "We don't accept bug reports in here. Bug reports need to be entered into bugzilla in the proper format." or "Please post job postings in the jobs channel only!"
Socialisers
Socialisers talk about off-topic stuff only. They hang out in the off-topic board or channel, and they tell everybody about their youngest child, their morning commute, or the story of how they met their spouse. Socialisers rarely engage with the actual main topic of the community, but everybody knows them, because they post a lot of off-topic content.
As long as socialisers know that the forum is about, and know their stuff, it's fine. The guy whose youngest son just got into middle school and who met his wife when they both reached for the last bottle of herbal shampoo at the supermarket isn't really disrupting your anime forum as long as he watches anime. If he could comment about the different animation studios that worked on Sailor Moon, but chooses not to, he's fine. The problem with socialisers only becomes noticeable when they attract socialisers who do not know or care anything about the on-topic content. If that happens, your forum is no longer a forum where some Haskell programmers post their lunch, it's a forum to post pictures of your lunch.
Enablers
Enablers are one step worse than socialisers. They don't just don't contribute on-topic content, they make the discussion actively worse. If you have a rule such as "do no post a maths homework question" or "do not answer personal questions" or "do not ask other people to answer your question in a DM", the enabler will happily comply anyway. "It's no skin off my back" he says, as he answers the homework question. "It's no skin off my back" he says, as he paraphrases the FAQ again. The enabler will make a good-faith effort to answer bad-faith questions, and he will enable people who just can't be bothered to read the FAQ and follow the rules.
Now there may be multiple reasons why you're not allowed to answer personal questions, ranging from OPSEC about pet names and the colour of your car to professionalism, and depending on those, this may be a big deal or not. When it comes to homework or answering in a DM, the reasoning should be straightforward.
The worst kind of enabling is probably taking abuse in stride, and continuing the conversation. If somebody starts insulting the other people in the conversation, the least you could do is disengage. If somebody calls people names because they can't solve his problem, you should not enable him and try to help him, too.
The most subtle kind of enabling behaviour is a response to Cunningham-style trolling. When somebody posts "Linux sucks, there are no good text editors", then the last thing you should do is reward this kind of behaviour. When somebody posts "I can't solve this in Python, I guess C++ is just a better language. I think I should go back and use C++", then you should say "Good riddance, and may the gods have mercy on the C++ forum."
The most common kind of enabling is when people ask a question and can't be bothered to Google it first, and somebody copies the question into Google it and pastes the answer. The long-term consequence of such behaviour is not only a degraded quality of the conversation, but a forum culture where people regularly Google answers (or worse, ask ChatGPT) and paste the result without checking.
Maybe in the future, something like "I asked ChatGPT this, is this true" or "Copilot wrote this code, can you help debug it" will become more common, and humouring these kinds of people will become the most common toxic enabling behaviour.
Drama Magnets/Troll Feeders
Finally, there is a kind of person who enables trolls and harassers by being thin-skinned, very easy to make fun of, and by boosting every insult. There is a certain kind of person who will just endlessly complain about being wronged in small ways, and will take offence to small perceived slights. This allows a malicious actor to get out much more in terms of reactions than he puts in. If a troll can poke somebody once, and get dozens of "Ow ow" and "he poked me" and "woe is me, I have been poked" out of a target, that will only motivate him.
If somebody freely volunteers his weak spots, things he is self-conscious about, ways to rile him up in the form of a profile, carrd, or bio, then trolls will have it even easier.
So What?
Over time, too many enablers, tourists, or drama magnets may or may not ruin your online community. Over time, engagement optimisers can slowly but steadily ruin your community. Socialisers may not notice or care either way.
A code of conduct may protect your community against bad actors, but it can't protect your forum culture from clueless actors. It's incredibly hard to create a good set of punitive rules against this. As a moderator, it's emotionally difficult to enforce rules against this. You don't want to kick people while they are down, and you don't want to punish them for making popular content, even if it's just pictures of kittens and pictures of their lunch.
The only way you can achieve anything is by educating your users, and hoping they give a damn about forum culture.

Meowdy ! I'm Ashe (or Rain), but you can call me Spell, and welcome to my personal little corner where I mainly post hair recolours. I'm forever in SimPE, Photoshop, and Linux hell.
Requests for recolouring hair in Afterglow, Poppet, and Pooklet/Io are OPEN

Reuploads for archival purposes are allowed and encouraged. Reuploads for non-English websites and regions where tumblr is banned is allowed.
ETC
I do not guarantee that any of my CC works on Legacy Collection
I often forget to respond to DMs and asks a lot, and sometimes Tumblr just refuses to notify me of any response 🤷
Please don't send links in my asks. Tumblr will probably delete it, so just say "Can you do X hair by this creator?"
I do not convert hair anymore, I simply do not have the time nor energy to do so
If you have an issue with me or my behaviour, I'd actually love a DM or ask about it. It's the combined autistic urge to know why, and I also want to be a better person
I'm from the South, but I type words ending in -or the English spelling (colour, behaviour, flavour, etc.) I just socialized with a lot of British people online and it stuck with me
I am willing to teach others how to create CC, and I help troubleshoot CC creation issues because 1. it's either easy to fix or 2. I have already fixed it in my own experience. But I do not troubleshoot game issues

Ayo! Hope you are doing well 👽 I wanted to ask you this since you seem very knowledgeable in all things Linux. I've been thinking about making a partition to start using a Linux distro (still need to actually take some time to look into which one), however one of the things I'm still very unsure about is how to make my various Adobe programs (mainly Photoshop, but others as well) work on it. I know alternatives exist, but sadly some still lack a fair bit of the functionality Adobe apps have, and even then, I still need them for my work. I've seen people online talk about Wine and VMs to make it run, but I'll admit I have no experience with either and performance is def. a concern. I don't have a problem with pirating them if needed, on the contrary, the Adobe Suite app has become a true bloatware over the years, it's insufferable… Do you have any recommandations? Ideally I'd prefer if I could switch to Linux fully eventually, having two OS' seems like a hassle. Sorry for the block of text! 😅
Hello!
I have zero experience with Adobe or Photoshop, I've been a lifelong Gimp user lol
Longish answer, so under the cut
Adobe does not work on Linux at all afaik, except for Photoshop. Pewdiepie (and various other content creators on YouTube) recently uploaded a Linux video where he touched on Adobe specifically and what he uses now instead, but idk if that's of interest to you and how that would apply to your situation. But maybe that's worth looking into. I know pewdiepie is controversial, but his video was surprisingly good and very well received in the Linux community. Another "big one" was James Lee Animation's video titled "How I broke up with Adobe", or Mike Gastin's "Leaving Adobe" where he explains how he left after using Adobe products for 40 years.
For photoshop, I think you can get it to run via a VM, I just haven't tried it. But there should be plenty of tutorials online.
Having two OS isn't that much of a hassle though. Any time you boot your PC, you'll be met with a Grub screen that looks like this:
You can then pick which OS you want to start. I set mine up so it counts down 8 seconds and then automatically boots Fedora if I don't pick anything else (so if I briefly leave my room, I come back to Fedora already booted). But you can fully customize Grub - set the default OS, set the time it takes to count down, you can even theme it:
What I would recommend for starters is that you make a partition for Linux on your PC (or install it on an external SSD) and just play around with it first. Try the VM method, try alternative programs for a while and try the dual booting system, then see what works best for you and your workflow.

Linux Life Episode 86
Hello everyone back to my Linux Life blog. I admit it has been a while since I wrote anything here . I have continued to use EndeavourOS on my Ryzen 7 Dell laptop. If I any major incidents had came up I would have made an entry.
However nothing really exciting has transpired. I update daily and OK have had a few minor issues but nothing that couldn't be sorted easily so not worth typing up a full blog just for running a yay command which sorted things out.
However given it's March, which some You-tubers and content creators have been running with the hashtag of #Marchintosh in which they look at old Mac stuff.
So I decided to run some older versions of Mac OS using VMWare Workstation which is now free for Windows, Mac and Linux.
For those not up with the technology of Virtual Machines basically the computer creates a sandbox container which pretends to be a certain machine so you can run things like Linux and MacOS using a software created environment.
VMWare Workstation and Oracle Virtualbox are Type 2 Hypervisors as they are known which create the whole environment using software machines which you can configure. All drivers are software based.
Microsoft Hyper-V, Xen and others such as QEMU are Type 1 Hypervisors which as well as having the various environments have software drivers some can use what they call "bare metal" which means it can see and use your actual GPU meaning you can take advantage of video acceleration. It also can give bare metal access to keyboards and mice. These take a lot more setup but work slightly quicker than Type 2 once they are done.
Type 1 systems like Qemu and Bochs may also allow access to different CPU types such as SPARC, PowerPC so you can run alternative OS like Solaris, IRIX and others.
Right now i have explained that back to the #Marchintosh project I was using VMWare Workstation and I decided to install 2 versions of Mac OS.
First I installed Mac OS Catalina (Mac OS X 10.15) now luckily a lot of the leg work had been taken out for me as someone had already created a VMDK file (aka virtual Hard drive) of Catalina with AMD drivers to download. Google is your friend I am not putting up links.
So first you have to unlock VMWare as by default the Windows and Linux versions don't list Mac OS. You do this by downloading a WMWare unlocker and then running it. It will make patch various files to allow it to now run MacOS.
So upon creating the VM and selecting Mac OS 10.15 from options you have to first setup to install the OS later and then when it asks to use a HD point it towards the Catalina AMD VDMK previously downloaded (keep existing format). Set CPUs to 2 and Cores to 4 as I can. Memory set to 8GB, Set networking to NAT and everything else as standard. Selecting Finish.
Now before powering on the VM as I have an AMD Ryzen system I had to edit the VM's VMX file using a text editor.
cpuid.0.eax = “0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:1011” cpuid.0.ebx = “0111:0101:0110:1110:0110:0101:0100:0111” cpuid.0.ecx = “0110:1100:0110:0101:0111:0100:0110:1110” cpuid.0.edx = “0100:1001:0110:0101:0110:1110:0110:1001” cpuid.1.eax = “0000:0000:0000:0001:0000:0110:0111:0001” cpuid.1.ebx = “0000:0010:0000:0001:0000:1000:0000:0000” cpuid.1.ecx = “1000:0010:1001:1000:0010:0010:0000:0011” cpuid.1.edx = “0000:0111:1000:1011:1111:1011:1111:1111” smbios.reflectHost = "TRUE" hw.model = "iMac19,1" board-id = "Mac-AA95B1DDAB278B95"
This is to stop the VM from locking up as it will try and run an Intel CPU setup and freeze. This is the prevention of this happening by making it think its a iMac 19,1 in this case.
Now you need to create a harddrive in the VM settings to install the OS on by editing the settings in VMWare and adding a hard drive in my case 100GB set as one file. Make sure it is set to SATA 0:2 using the Advanced button.
Now power on the VM and it will boot to a menu with four options. Select Disk Utility and format the VMware drive to APFS. Exit Disk Utility and now select Restore OS and it will install. Select newly formatted drive and Agree to license.
It will install and restart more than once but eventually it will succeed. Setup language, Don't import Mac, skip location services, skip Apple ID, create account and setup icon and password. don't send Metrics, skip accessibility.
Eventually you will get a main screen with a dock. Now you can install anything that doesn't use video acceleration. So no games or Final Cut Pro but can be used a media player for Youtube and Logic Pro and Word processing.
There is a way of getting iCloud and Apple ID working but as I don't use it I never did bother. Updates to the system are at your own risk as it can wreck the VM.
Once installed you can power down VM using the Apple menu and remove the Catalina VMDK hard drive from the settings. It provide all the fixed kexts so keyboards, mice and sound should work.
If you want video resolution you can install VMware Tools and the tools to select are the ones from the unlocker tools.
Quite a lot huh? Intel has a similar setup but you can use the ISOs and only need to set SMC.version="0" in the VMX.
For Sonoma (Mac OS 14) you need to download OpenCore which is a very complicated bootloader created by very smart indivials normally used to create Hackintosh setups.
It's incredibly complex and has various guides the most comprehensive being the Dortania Opencore guide which is extensive and extremely long.
Explore so at your own risk. As Sonoma is newer version the only way to get it running on AMD laptops or Desktops in VMWare is to use Opencore. Intel can do fixes to the VMX to get it work.
This one is similar to the previous I had to download an ISO of Sonoma. Google is your friend but here is a good one on github somewhere (hint hint). In my case I downloaded Sonoma version 14.7_21H124 (catchy I know).
I also had to download a VDMK of Opencore that allowed 4 cores to be used. I found this on AMD-OSX as can you.
The reason I chose this ISO as you can download Sequioa one. I tried Sequioa but could not get sound working.
So for this one create VM , Select Mac OS 14, install operating system later. Existing OS select Opencore VDMK (keep existing format), set CPU to 1 and cores to 4. Set Netwoking as Bridged everything else as normal. Finish
Now edit settings on VM. On CD-Rom change to image and point to downloaded Sonoma ISO. Add Second hard drive to write to once again I selected 100GB one file. Make sure it is set to SATA 0:2 using the Advanced button. Make sure Opencore is set to SATA 0:0 also using same button.
Now Power the VM. It will boot to a menu with four options. Select Disk Utility and format the VMware drive to APFS. Exit Disk Utility and now select Install OS and it will install. Select newly formatted drive and Agree to license.
The System will install and may restart several times if you get a halt then Restart Guest using the VMware buttons. It will continue until installed.
Setup as done in Catalina turning off all services and creating account. Upon starting of Mac you will have a white background.
Go to System Settings and Screen Saver and turn off Show as Wallpaper.
Now Sonoma is a lot more miserable about installing programs from the Internet and you will spend a lot of time in the System setting Privacy and Security to allow things.
I installed OpenCore Auxilary Tools and managed to install it after the security nonsense. I then turned on Hard Drives in Finder by selecting Settings.
Now open OPENCORE and open EFI folder then OC folder. Start OCAT and drag config.plist from folder to it. In my case to get sound I had to use VoodooHDA but yours may vary.
The VoodooHDA was in the Kernel tab of OCAT I enabled it and disabled AppleALC. Save and exit. Reboot VM and et voila I had sound.
Your mileage may vary and you may need different kexts depending on soundcard or MAC OS version.
Install VMTools to get better Screen resolution. Set Wallpaper to static rather than dynamic to get better speed.
Close VM edit settings and remove CD iso by unticking connected unless you have a CD drive I don't. DO NOT remove Opencore as it needs that to boot.
And we are done. What a nightmare but fascinating to me. If you got this far you deserve a medal. So ends my #Marchintosh entry.
Until next time good luck and take care

Free resources to learn hacking
- https://www.hacksplaining.com/ (A good site to learn all about different types of vulnerabilities, ways to hack, ways to prevent hacking, etc. with hands on basic labs as well as quizzes and terminology.)
- https://hackthissite.org/ (This site provides in depth hacking challenges for beginners and people of all knowledge sets, there isn't much hand-holding as you progress, but YouTube helps a LOT.)
- YouTube (Content creators such as David Bombal, NetworkChuck, etc. come to mind, although John Hammond I believe is a bit underrated and very well knowledgable as well as less of a snake oil salesman when it comes to his content and his abilities and also do not discount small YouTubers as well, because some can be very knowledgeable from some of the ones I've looked for help with, particularly Chuck Moore and Sean Mancini.)
- https://www.khanacademy.org/ (Now hear me out, it doesn't have a TON of hacking content but when you need help with some stuff, like for me I needed some basics of cryptography and things such as that, it helped a good bit with some fundamentals, so try seeing if it has some content you might like.)
- Keeping up with news also generally helps you see current trends in security which helps as well.
- https://hbh.sh/home (Personally have not tried this yet, but Hellbound Hackers I have heard is a great wealth of information as well as having their own discord I believe for communication which is exciting.)
Lastly I wanted to say if you are studying for Cybersecurity certs I heard Jason Dion and Professor Messer are quite good and if you download Visual Studio Code - https://code.visualstudio.com/ as well as the extension that you need, learning code such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc. can NEVER hurt and can only help (especially when looking over code and connecting the dots), my personal favorites for coding/scripting for software languages that I am learning is Python as well as PowerShell because of the ease of use and ability to create decent projects in a reasonable amount of time (learning Linux and MySQL helps as well but it may take longer to learn, it all depends on your preferences and trial and error, as well as being determined.)
I hope my post helps! (and remember if you are a college student, particularly WGU, you get discounts/free offers for websites such as Udemy, LinkedIn Learning, etc.)
Thanks.
