the year of the linux desktop will come not at the hands of some crazy user-friendly distro, but by microsoft becoming so unbearable that people switch out of frustration.

truly so baffling to me to hear people complain about their electronics like my coworker was complaining that her 2017 Mac was so slow its barely functional and it’s like what do you MEAN your 8 year old Mac is dead? mine is from 2013 and runs flawlessly?? what are you doing to your $1000 machine ??? filling it with peanut butter and TikTok viruses?????
#and I’m fairly callous with mine. I’ll download anything. (although I am a tech guy so like I can think critically but#I do tend to download a bunch of random shit from like Reddit threads and forums lol) and yet my Mac is like practically mint.#his only crime is sometimes he dies at 20% and gets hot and can’t run 32bit programs (<apple’s fault)#he’s still running max graphics stardew valley with 900 mods and Minecraft mid graphics with 200 and like 30fps (<good for modded mc)#Apple truly making solid products considering every midrange windows pc I’ve used became garbage in like 4-5 years 🫥#ive spent more on my 4 windows PCs in the last 20 years than this one Mac that will probably keep trucking for another 10 years.#Like sorry im not an apple freak but considering how many devices I’ve bought used and fiddled with…… kind of incredible how Apple has#somehow managed to come out on top in the longevity/ease of use/privacy departments.#if windows didn’t force you to update and use their bloatware bullshit and not let you CONTROL THE MACHINE YOU BOUGHT id be less mad#but every time I use win 10 or 11 I want to shoot myself in the head. win1011 softwares practically feel like malware.#a day in the life of steeve#only reason I would ever have a windows device is to play sims 2. Something that I think is really fundamental about what appeals to people about things like Linux and Firefox and other open source and customizable software is that a lot of us remember the days when we told computers what to do. These days it really feels like we have decided to let computers tell us what to do (and by extension nazi fuck tech billionaires).
Don't let the computer tell you what to do. You tell the computer what to do! I always remember when I was newer to Linux I wanted advice on where to store files that I wanted multiple users to have easy read write access to, so I asked and people were generally just like "I dunno, I guess /opt or /srv. It doesn't really matter its your filesystem" and that really spoke to me. Like, its your filesystem, its your computer. Create a directory on your fs root called /stuff and just dump everything you have in there if you want. Create different partitions for files that are different colors if you want. Store all your nudes in /proc no one gives a shit.

my brother reminded me my computer is 200% out of date and ill have to do some serious revisions (replacing the motherboard+ possibly LOL) to update to windows 11 and i click on the ‘is my computer win11 compatible’ and it gives me the hardware needed for AI WIN 11 but no mention if you dont want ai? what if i just shot my computer into smithereens? what then.

i've been using my sibling's old laptop to play fields of mistria and it's making me want to never move on from my macbook... apple lets me update when i want and never does anything without my permission. doesn't give me ads on my homescreen. doesn't force me to log into a microsoft account to experience "family safety features". i thought apple was supposed to be the stupid pathetic OS but running windows genuinely feels like i'm fighting off a virus called microsoft login assistant 24/7

The Steam Deck is now cheaper than a Nintendo Switch in some places. And the Steam Deck can emulate anything with about an hour of setup!
#i got one like a year and a bit ago on sale but they're now just that price as standard#almost exclusively play emulated nintendo ds and n64 games and VNs but it also runs like. anything a mid-range gaming PC can run.#which is pretty damn impressive to me. it boggles me mind what you can get on that lil screen.#plus its also a handheld linux pc if you close steam (which is a built in feature)#anyway point is its nuts that its now the best value handheld console imo#(its probably the old model without the fancy new screen they released last year but like. you dont need that.)#i am playing 20 year old DS games they only have 3 polygons.

dads been getting back into making music in a big way and its so funny to have lots of back and forth about cool experimental stuff we've come across and i ask how his own tinkering is going and he tells me he's spent the last 2 days perfecting the setup on his RGB keyboard instead
