How do I unzip multiple / many files under Linux or Unix?

Sidetrack: ChromeOS Flex... on a Virtual Machine... with Single GPU Passthrough...

the prospect of running ChromeOS on anything more powerful than a microwave oven is unfathomably cursed - wheezus2000 on discord

So... where do we start here... *checks notes* ah! So yeah, last Sunday I showcased a virtual machine running ChromeOS Flex (the most barebones GUI your grandma can only recognize) over to the aptly named r/ChromeOSFlex subreddit. It was a lot of work but it does work somehow.

Anyways, here's a tutorial to get this abomination up and running using virt-manager!

Prerequisites:

You will need:

ChromeOS Flex Recovery Image

A decent hard drive space (around 24GB is enough)

A nice dedicated GPU (because I'm not sure if it'll work with an iGPU)

more than 4GB of RAM (8GB or more is recommended)

IOMMU support

Lots of patience (you'll see why in a moment)

On the software side, you'll need:

KVM and QEMU

libvirtd and virt-manager

GRUB or any bootloader already set-up for GPU passthrough

On the skills necessary:

Having familiarized with the concept of Linux, and basic command line stuff

Having followed instructions precisely

Potentially, having skills in compiling software and/or fiddling with the operating system and the Linux kernel as well

and... not having an attention span of a script kiddie

Process

Visit this link to download the recovery image from Google.

Scroll down to this part of the page. Click on "ChromeOS Flex installer image".

This would then be downloaded.

After that, unzip the file to a convenient place. This would take ~6GB of storage space.

Install the software prerequisites using your favorite package manager.

Once having virt-manager installed, click on the new button.

From there, select "Import existing disk image".

Click on Browse. Then select "Browse Local" to find the recovery image.

In my case, that'll be in the folder called vmdk, stored in my os folder on one of my hard drives. Select the "chromeos_*_reven_recovery..." file.

In the "Choose the operating system you are installing" prompt, select linux2022.

In the memory tab, pick 4096MiB and select how many cores you want to be assigned.

You must select "Customize configuration before install" as we tweak some things.

In the prompt that follows, here's what you need to change:

Firmware: BIOS -> UEFI

Disk: VirtIO -> USB

Video: Anything else -> VirtIO

Now add a virtual hard drive by clicking the "Add Hardware" button. It should be 20GB or larger, SATA bus. VirtIO bus doesn't work as it wouldn't be recognized.

Remove any Consoles, RNG and start the install.

Here's the configuration if you follow these steps:

After starting, you can now follow the steps in installing ChromeOS Flex. It should be straightforward, however the graphics are still glitchy as it seems. It'll be fixed once we added our dGPU.

However, ChromeOS at boot will, and definitely (in my case) crash and bootloop a couple times, even when installed, before landing you to the desktop.

If for some reason, the USB tablet device doesn't work or if you prefer a cursor, switch the USB tablet for a PS/2 or USB mouse.

Once installed, you can see your desktop glitching. If you, somehow can navigate the system, you can now turn it off and set up Single GPU Passthrough. I used this one by risingprismtv. Follow the instructions provided in the wiki, and apply it to your VM. This can (and will) be complicated (especially when dealing with IOMMU groups), as it may break your setup, so please proceed with caution. Any issues with the script can be reported through their Discord server.

After setting the scripts, this is my current VM setup:

Now it's time to boot the VM, and voila! You can now use ChromeOS Flex while staying under Linux!

Predicaments, and possible issues

No, it does not work under Windows, well, without complications apparently.

Possible VM bootloops, just like I said. Seems related to the graphics, I presume. Though, this only happens multiple times, before working normally.

You can't update the VM, apparently.

you can download gzdoom from both of these sites

You will need ZDL as well, there are a lot more doom launchers but this is the one that I personally use

Getting a doom WAD

Obtain a Doom wad weather that be through legal ways (buying the game and copying the wad from the files) Illegal (downloading the official wad from somewhere, piracy) or using freedoom

when you start up gzdoom it should tell you where to put the wad files, I only know where to put the files in on linux (it's /home/(your user)/.config/gzdoom/ and if you don't have the gzdoom directory, create it or launch gzdoom as it creates it for you)

But it should tell you where to go on windows so just pay attention

NOTE

These files download as a .zip, unzip the files and put them in a designated directory

Launch the game with ZDL

Assuming you already installed ZDL using the link provided above

ZDL will look empty, but we need zdl to look something like this

ZDL can be used to load multiple mods, or load just one mod. double click a file to make ZDL ignore it (it will put a line through it as it is doing here with brutal doom and unironically sonic lock and load, I was playing project brutality before thinking about making this post to get you guys to play this great sonic fan game/doom mod)

But right now ZDL is empty...

so let's fix that

navigate above to the "general settings" tab

you will be met with this, however you will not have anything in the "source ports" menu or the "IWADs" menu

Add a source port

click the plus under the "source ports" menu and you will be met with this. This is where things will get different from you and me. As I use linux and you might be using windows

find the executable for gzdoom using this file manager

Adding the IWADs are similar, click the plus to open the file manager. Find the IWADs and put them in. Import both freedoom phase 1 and 2, or doom 1 and 2 wads. SLL only uses the doom 2 wad, but some mods can be used with the doom 1 wad and so that's there for the future if you decide to launch other mods.

Navigate back to the launch config tab click the plus under the "extra files" tab and add he sonic lock and load file.

How To Back Up Your Patreon Posts And Photos To Multiple Formats Automatically (Using Linux) In December 2023

Patreon Creators -- I have good news and bad news for you.

The Good News: You Can Back Up Your Posts

The good news: You can back up your Patreon posts and then -- with a bit of scripting and some linux software tools {1} -- get them, along with images in the proper places, as word processing documents or standalone web pages. There is -- as far as I can tell -- no built-in way to export your data from Patreon. I asked a year ago, and they told me "Nope, but that's a great idea." While other changes have occurred with Patreon in the last year, there's still no internal way to export what you've written on the site/app -- and if anything, Patreon seems rather set on making sure it's that way. There are some third-party WordPress plugins I've heard of (and not tested), but if you're not using WordPress, you're SOL. There are extensions and tools to download individual images and such from posts, but that's not going to help if you need a backup of what you've created on the site. Given the principle of "What you don't own can ban (or get rid of) you with no notice," it is desirable to have a copy of your Patreon posts if you want to use them for anything else, or simply have a backup.

Using the tools (Linux instructions)

So here's how we do it. First, it requires a cross-platform tool called PatreonDownloader. Download the release and unpack it to a directory of your choosing and change into that directory. If needed (for linux) make PatreonDownloader.App executable by typing chmod +x ./PatreonDownloader.App. Using the tool is pretty straightforward: ./PatreonDownloader.App --url https://www.patreon.com/ --descriptions --embeds --download-directory /path/to/save/location --use-sub-directories It will open a browser window automatically for you (chromium -- a fork of Chrome without Google), warn that the browser is being operated by an automated tool, and have you log into Patreon. You can only access creator posts that you normally can reach when logged into Patreon. And then the tool will work for a while in a terminal window. This... may take a while, depending on how many posts you have. PatreonDownloader will not download externally hosted images (e.g. on imgur) or videos (e.g. on YouTube or Vimeo). The --embeds flag will create text files in the appropriate directories with the information about those externally hosted embeds. Each post will be in its own subdirectory, and there will be a description.html file with the body of the text. And while the images have been downloaded, the links in description.html still point to an online source. It's all there... but not very easily usable. Our friends sed, awk, detox, and pandoc are here to help (sed and awk should already be on your Linux system; pandoc and detox are probably available in your package manager as well). (I also use unzip at one point as well.) I wrote a BASH script using all of those tools to go through, smarten the quotation marks (to avoid escaping errors) and producing the following: - The document, renamed with the title of the post (and the title and date posted at the top of the doc), in markdown - The document, renamed with the title of the post (and the title and date posted at the top of the doc), with images embedded in ODT (OpenDocument format) - The document, renamed with the title of the post (and the title and date posted at the top of the doc), with images embedded in DOCX (MS-Word format) - The document, renamed with the title of the post (and the title and date in the metadata of the format), in epub format - The document, renamed with the title of the post, in HTML format with links to images pointing to ./media and the image files all located in that subdirectory. The script (MIT license) is available from GitHub, GitLab, or my own repo. The usage is pretty simple: convert_patreon_downloader_files.sh /path/to/save/location If you do not specify a path, it will start at the current directory and recurse downward. If you want to have it all as a single file, I recommend taking all of the resulting epub files -- assuming their titles are different -- and combining them using the EpubMerge plugin for Calibre. While pandoc is able to take multiple files and combine them into one large ebook, if there are a lot of files and images getting pulled in, you may end up with your CPU and RAM at 100%. (Ask me how I know.) However, once Calibre combines them all into a single big epub file, you can use pandoc MyBig.epub -f epub -t docx -o MyBig.docx, for example, to make it into one big Word document. There you have it. A genuine backup of (at least) your words and images that you've posted on Patreon.

The Bad News: (Sort Of)

If you were paying attention, you already know the bad news. PatreonDownloader allows the user to use the tool with any post the user can normally see when logged into Patreon. For example, when putting this together, I was doing so on behalf of M. Sotherden (who makes glass art and often writes about her life) who wanted to have a backup of her writing. I did not need their login credentials, I just had to subscribe to their Patreon. So, at least theoretically, any patron could download every post of any creator they support.

Should I Worry?

Is that actually something to worry about? From what I've observed of Patreon -- which admittedly isn't much -- it seems like most of the patrons really are there to support artistic and creative endeavors, not to "get the most bang for their buck". There are going to be scammers who try to rip off someone else's work -- not a large percentage, but with automation and the size of the internet, a small percentage can have a big impact. If a Creator is worried about it, they can set their posts to only be visible for a period of time, so their most recent Patron will not have automatic access to their entire back catalog. I'm sure that once this gets realized, there will be a vocal few with their trousers all in a twist worrying about AI or plagarists or pirates or youths, and frantically changing the settings on their Patreon. {2} They will hit their socials, pearls firmly clutched. Again, not a large percentage of Creators, but a vocal one. They may even do something so stupid as to try to lash out at PatreonDownloader. Let me say that again. SOMETHING STUPID LIKE GOING AFTER THE TOOL. Because ultimately, this is the same issue as DRM, except a lot more personal. DRM -- or restricting how far back Patrons can look -- inherently says "I don't trust you with what I made." And Patreon is explicitly about trust and people wanting to support artists and creators rather than thinking they're "pre-ordering" something with their pledge {3}. Patrons can -- and frequently do -- support artists and creators at financial levels well over the "cost" of any tangible gain they receive. So to those creators who are thinking about doing something stupid, take a moment to reflect on that. Your Patrons are not paying you for a product or a service. They may get something out of supporting you -- something to read every week or month, a postcard, whatever -- but that is not why they are your patrons. They are not there to snag merch or take all your stuff. They are your patrons because they are supporting you.

Ahoy! Here's a guide on how to emulate Animal Crossing: New Leaf and other 3DS games!

In short this guide says:

- Download the emulator Citra here and install it.

- Download the game here, and unzip it. (Link will ask you to download the correct file)

- Decrypt the game, and start playing. (Opening the link will stat a download)

First off we need to get a good emulator, and it dosen't get much better than Citra. Citra is a 3DS emulator that has been worked on and updated since 2013. It's available for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android! So you'll be able to play 3DS games both on your computer and on android phones.

Start by downloading Cirta from this page:

Always remember to scan for viruses before opening files, even from sources you trust. I recommend using Malwarebytes where if you click on "personal" and select "Malwarebytes for windows/mac/chromebook" on the dropdown menu, and then click on "free download" you can use a free trial forever.

Now that we know that the file is virus free, click on the Citra installer and start installing. For those that have multiple hard-drives on their computer, install Cirtra on the "C:" disc for the best results. I install mine on "C:\Emulator\Citra" so i can have my emulators collected in the same spot. When asked about what version of Citra to install, you just need "Citra Nightly" so leave "Citra Canary" unchecked. Accept the license, and finish installing.

Next up let's actually get the game. I usually get my games from "romsforever.co" but there are a lot of other sites around. Again make sure to always scan for viruses. Here's a direct link to the rom files we are looking for:

Extract the .zip/.7z file in a folder where you want to keep your games. Delete the "ROMSFOREVER" file, it's not needed.

Now you need to decrypt the game so Citra will let you play it. Start by downloading this decrypter:

Unzip the decrypter and move the .3ds/.cia file to the folder and click on "Batch CIA 3DS decryptor.bat". Give it a moment, and you'll be left with a -decrypted.cci and a .3ds/.cia file. Feel free to delete the .3ds/.cia file now as you don't need it more. Move the .cci file to where you want to keep it.

Open Citra, click on "load file" and choose the .cci file.

Some extra settings for help with optimization:

Go to settings by clicking on "emulation" and choose "configure". From there you can click on "controls" and set up the controls to how you want. You can even connect a Bluetooth controller, ranging from the latest xbox controllers and switch controllers to the cheapest non-licensed things you can find. Investing in a good controller is absolutely recommended when it comes to emulating.

Click on "Emulation" and choose "configure". Go to "graphics" and turn off "accurate multiplication" and "enable shader JIT". By having those two off the game will hopefully run better.

If you have a beefy computer you can even improve on the textures by clicking on "Emulation" and choose "configure". Go to "graphics" and choose a higher resolution on "internal resolution".
