Dokja refers to his life in different ways.

When Dokja zones out, he’s thinking about if his life were a different genre. He determines at the end that his life is realism/nonfiction and says that he’s just the reader.

Realism and non-fiction aren’t the same thing. In the novel, he says realism which is defined in the Mariam-Webster Dictionary (cause I’m American) as:

Concern for fact or reality and rejection of the impractical and visionary. The theory or practice of fidelity in art and literature to nature or to real life and to accurate representation without idealization.

In the webtoon, he says nonfiction (same thing as non-fiction), which is defined as:

Writing or cinema that is about facts and real events.

So what does this mean? Am I just crazy and obsessive for focusing on the definitions? Actually, no, it matters a lot. Let's break down those definitions.

Realism is typically a word used to describe art. There was a realism art movement in the mid-19th century beginning in France. The main characteristic of realism was focusing on everyday life and typically working-class life without idealizing or romanticizing what the world really looked like. It was a response to romanticism, which focused on turning finite things into infinite beauty. It can describe more than just paintings, but that's the basic idea.

Meanwhile, nonfiction is used only to describe writing or cinema. If a painting is "nonfiction," then it's realism. Photographs could technically be nonfiction, but that's a debatable topic that I'm not qualified to talk about. But it's something that documents facts.

So damn it, what does it mean?! Using the context of the definitions and what they mean, we can see how Dokja sees the world.

N!Dokja uses the word realism. He sees life as only defined by the boring day-to-day nature of a person. You could argue that he sees the world as a work of art, but that's debatable. It adds more weight that he is working-class. This is all his life has ever been. Just the cycle of going to work and coming home. His life is only illuminated by the web novels he reads. They are his fantasy; they are what he romanticizes. His life of realism is a response—a juxtaposition—of the romanticism of his life. He leaves room for something more in his life.

Meanwhile, W!Dokja uses nonfiction. He's defined his life as one thing: facts. Nothing could ever be different. He is a man who is working class and reads web novels. This is an undeniable fact.

I don't know. The word realism adds more to his character in a way I can't explain. It just makes him feel more connected with his perception of the world. It makes the transition from "oh silly conversation on the subway" to "brutal apocalypse" smoother. It makes his easy acceptance make more sense. Using the word realism to describe his life, he acknowledges the small things that make up his life. He acknowledges his life is made up of dull moments that he finds no interest in, but it leaves room for romanticism. He sees nothing of his life, but his life can be beautiful in the same places where it was boring. His life can become fiction simply because it is so finite. Ways of Survival coming to life starts his romanticism. It marks the beginning of something so big and expansive that realism is all that's left of his previous life.

"mm, okay. take your time." nanami has to peel himself away from you, and it takes all of his might. on the upside, he can watch your back as you fuss around in the kitchen. silently, you check the pot of rice, noting the remaining cooking time, stir and lower the flame on your meat and head back to continue cutting on your board. nanami studies all of it. he truly loves you so much.

so, he can't help the fact that the beautiful meal you'd been doting over got a bit too crispy.

Hey, I have a question.

What's up with Shadow from the future? Is he dead? Or is he still looking after Silver?

By the way, is Silver immortal alongside Shadow? If he weren't, it would be very sad.

So, technically, my main Dadow AU doesn't really end up with Silver in a bad future. It's a fixed future timeline where Silver actually gets to grow up in a happy and relatively normal environment, and Shadow gets to share his son with all his wacky friends. It exists just for fluff and sillies.

I DO, however, have an original timeline Dadow AU that does take place 200 years later in the no good very bad future. And THAT, my friend, exists only for the angst art.
