been seeing alot of discourse ensuing in the fandom about the pjo tv show and here’s the thing: there is alot of impetus about what the show didn’t get right but isn’t it absolutely amazing how much the show did get right????

yes, gabe is a bit different. yes, annabeth didn’t show percy around camp. yes, grover snitched on percy. yes, ms. dodds transforming could be a bit underwhleming.

BUT

we also have this: percy being an actual kid with sarcasm and sadness and anger and trauma. he’s not one-note. he’s just trying his best and his inner conflict is so painfully and wonderfully portrayed. grover being a nervous wreck at times but also sweet and earnest and guilt-ridden and brave in his own way. annabeth being a little girl wise beyond her years, with a stoicism that feels like something she was forced to practice and the spark of a dream driving her actions. luke being a likeable teenager with actual empathy towards percy which will drive home his fall from grace that much deeper.

chiron being a mentor figure who still makes questionable choices and can’t always say the words percy wants to hear, despite his best intentions. mr. d being an asshole who is still likeable, if only for his humor. sally jackson being a fierce mother with both tenderness and strength, who isn’t perfect but might as well be in percy’s eyes. clarisse being the unpleasant bully that she is, with all the rage and pettiness that she held within when we were first introduced to her yet with the promise of something more.

camp halfblood’s set and the cinematography deserve their own medals. they’re quite literally perfect.

soooo, where i’m getting at is this:

i don’t believe that all criticism pointing out inconsistencies with the books is just nitpicking. alot of it is well thought out and politely presented, too, and i think it’s important to point it out so the showrunners know where they went wrong and can try and rectify those errors–however small or big–in the next season. at the same time, undermining the entire show, discounting all the efforts made to remain faithful to the source material just because they strayed from a storyline that didn’t land as well as it could have–that’s a bit overblown, yes?

like it is an adaptation, not a word-by-word recreation from page to screen. of course, there will be changes because some things in a book don’t always translate well in a story told on the screen. for me, most changes aim to enhance rick’s work, not undermine it or take away from it in some misguided attempt to appeal to the larger audience like the movies did.

at the end of the day, it is very important to recognise the 90% of the show that depicted our beloved scenes from the book as faithfully as possible instead of constantly criticising the 10% of it that changed directions for a certain end goal that serves the screenwriting for a tv show. there can be balance of both praise and criticism and i’m very much in support of people pointing out genuine problems with the storytelling of the show but these conversations should also try and acknowledge the myriad of aspects in which the show excelled. like just the fact that i get to see so much of my imagination take form in front of my eyes, through a screen, with so much of the same authenticity that the pjo books are inlaid with–that’s genuinely mind-boggling to me.

Your trusty Venice anon here! Just walked out of the first screening so there will be some spoilers ahead. Let me start by saying that applause was very tepid, and what I found odd is that it started several seconds after the title card, like someone remembered that we were supposed to applaud. Not a great sign.

Outside, what I mostly heard was confusion. People asking each other what the ending was and just going over some plot points that were confusing. I saw one girl vehemently go after Olivia and calling her a fake feminist, and one guy commented “the normies are going to love it” which I found very funny. Also lots of people commenting on Harry’s accent and him being British in the film, and mocking how that is explained in the story.

Now, my two cents on the film. It LOOKS great, starts out sleek and compelling, but then it folds onto itself and the last act is just very weak in my opinion. Lots of plot holes and things that aren’t really explained properly. Also Alice’s descent into madness is kind of repetitive and the pacing is off in the middle half. Poor Florence carries the whole damn thing and it pains me to say that one of the weakest things about the film is Harry. He is not bad per say but just somehow blank? I don’t know how to explain it but it’s like his alien charm doesn’t translate well? It’s like he’s out of focus (not literally of course) and his character is just sort of blank when it really should be the center of it all. Also, his look for the “real life” scenes is really something, the internet is going to go nuts. In general, i feel like his star power is much less than what anyone anticipated, and is completely wiped out by Florence’s. Just one last thing even though I might think of more stuff later on, those notorious sex scenes are among the least sexy I’ve seen. Not sure if it’s because that is clearly the first time that man has had his head or his hands between a woman’s legs or because their chemistry is a bit off, but they feel rushed and performative, like they were put there just to be able to say they are. Come to think of it, the whole film kind of feels like that.

Honestly, what Olivia has been trying to portray this movie as, and what this movie is actually like are entirely different things. I think she is so full of herself, and so obsessed with sex, making everything "sexy", and pushing that dated "edgy" 2000s over sexualization of women, that she is unable to actually go beyond it to explain her own movie. Her narrative for promotion is entirely disconnected from what she is actually promoting.

About the alleged sex scene she was denied to include in the trailer: I think she was lying. Again, to continue her disconnected sex campaign. Everyone who saw the test screenings of the movie said that the only 2 sex scenes are the ones that *are* in the trailer. There is no additional sex scene that didn't get to be in the trailer. She lied in order to push her sex campaign and be edgy. That was her whole point in that interview. Saying that society are puritans and don't want to see female pleasure or women enjoying sex. And she proved her point by bringing up this non-existent sex scene that's not even in the final cut of the movie. All of this, again, has nothing to do with the movie. It's just the only thing her brain thinks of at all times.

I'm sad that Harry may be getting the worst of it in reviews. I hope critics and the public can see the poor direction he got from Olivia, and how that translated into this "blank" performance next to Florence's.

Also, Olivia was there? I thought she would only be at the later screening? Who called her a fake feminist? A fan, a journalist or rando person?

Alright, it's come to my attention that there are those who do not understand the raw babygirl energy of Richard Montlaur. So here are some Janchard headcanons to right the wrongs that rive my heart.

- Jan was (privately, he'd never show it) nervous about Richard's body count when they started dating, until he found out that it's all a media exaggeration. Less than 10% of Richard's dates result in sex because he's gentlemanly enough to just go with whatever the person he's spending time with wants to do. Just eat a big meal and chat? He's down. Drink wine and watch Pixar movies? He's your man. Scroll through each others' dating apps? He's an open book. If you want to have the hot steamy sex? He'll give you a transcendent experience. So when Jan's nervous about possibly rushing things, he's pleasantly surprised to find that Richard is immensely patient and respectful.

- I mean the sex is still wonderful once they start, Richard is as much an animal in bed as he is a deadly warrior on the pitch, but again, only when and to what extent his partner wants to.

- Richard insists on big spooning sometimes, which more often than not just looks like they fell asleep while Jan was giving him a piggyback ride, but neither of them mind.

- There's one night a week where Jan gets to cook dinner, mostly because it's cuisines Richard is unfamiliar with (and most of it is Dutch Food). Otherwise, it's Richard's kitchen.

- With the other notable exception that Jan makes excellent pastries. He doesn't even remember where he learned the art, but if Richard ever opened a resturant/bistro, Jan would be in charge of all the baking.

- The wine cellar is split into three sections, usable for any occasion, private collection (the good stuff), private collection that can only be consumed when with Jan and only Jan(the exquisite stuff). Dani once brought up the wrong bottle and almost ended up in the treatment room.

- For mutual annoyance and enjoyment, Richard constantly calls Jan 'Mijn Geliefde' and Jan constantly calls Richard 'Mon Amour'

- At one point old private photos of Richard got leaked, and in response Jan attempted to do a press conference nude. They were barely able to stop him, but the whole team saw everything. Richard initially felt horribly guilty for this, thinking he'd inadvertently pressured Jan somehow, but Jan assured him that it was entirely his own idea and if anything Jan was just mad he didn't get to 'keep Richard to himself' anymore. The one unfortunate consequence was forgetting to tell Will not to touch anything in the boot room prior to them getting a chance to...*ahem*, clean up.

- They have the absolute nerdiest couple costumes (think like dressing up as Alan Turing and the Enigma Machine level dweeby).

- Richard thought Jan's family wouldn't like him, so he brought multiple gifts of food, beverage, and other stuff to compensate. Some of it went to waste because it was forgotten in favor of the Maas family excitedly showing Richard every baby picture and sharing every embarrassing story they could collectively come up with.

- The team got them 'Maas-Montlaur' jerseys as an anniversary present (before they were married ftr) in jest. Chris Powell and Arlo White were very confused when the jerseys began appearing regularly during matches.

- Richard falling asleep while Jan's giving him a piggyback ride is not an uncommon occurrence. And just in general, Richard finds Jan's hair to be a very comfortable pillow (bus rides, hotel rooms, literally anywhere).

- Richard slipping into French whenever he gets emotional, upset, or even just excited became MORE frequent because Jan took over translation duty from Zoreaux and was so good he could even sometimes predict words before they were spoken.

- Jan is unable to sleep on bus or plane rides unless Richard is seated next to him and already asleep.

- One time, an on-site commentator heavily criticized Jan's defending and even attempted to coin the term 'the Flopping Dutchman'. The day ended with a red card for Richard and a pattern since of commentators choosing their words VERY carefully when discussing Richmond's defense.

See ik they've been friends for years and definitely knows each other than we'll ever know them. BUT TOXIC IS TOXIC no matter if it's our close friends, siblings, partner or even parents. There are some parents who takes care of their kids in everyway but pass these comments which puts them down infront of cousins or school. It may hurt a person on inside even if they maynot show them outside. My grandma was like this always passing criticism.. always in the sense whenever she sees me and now we are not even talking to each other because I'm not kind as Jimin lol, I won't take bs thinking about our bonds.

Making snarky comments regarding everything Jimin does is definitely not a good behavior. This is not the first and definitely not the last time he'll do this. How Jimin looks, how his body looks, how his voice sounds, how skilled he is, how he behaves, anything and everything Jimin done has been mocked by suga multiple times. I haven't seen him doing this to other members this frequently. Will he dare to say JK's body doesn't looks good or JK doesn't know to play a guitar under his posts ? Never. Jimin maybe extremely kind enough to forgive and forget anything members do because he loves them as his own brothers but taking advantage of someone who you know won't bite back is literally abusing him. Imagine someone very close to you is making these mocking comments everything related to you ? Won't you be hurt ? It will be a deep wound inside mentally and kept on poking your insecurities no matter how much you love that person or vice versa.

And to think this is not even under his personal post but a reply post to one of the most trending movies rn, It's not just army seeing that post. locals and movie crew who may see it will obviously translate the only 2 comments under it and there it is - putting down Jimin infront of everyone. And ofcourse Fandom won't see it because obviously Suga is 'savage king' isn't it. Yoonmin has 'bickering married couple vibes' 'yoongi is always pulling Jimin's leg 🤣🤣' how funny isn't it ? They'll instead ship his with suga because the one who can't even spend one second without insulting Jimin is definitely gonna praise him, heal him and fill him with love and care.

If we are speaking about skills, how about Jimin literally shaming tf out of yoongi for his average dance skills infront of everyone ? Peak spanish cinema

La gran aventura de Mortadelo y Filemón (2003)

Alright this movie is insane and I can't really describe what it is, other than calling it live action slapstick, and saying it's based on a very long running and extremely popular spanish comic, and talking about how that comic was key in my formative years, how it inspired me as an artist, and in my sense of humor, but how it also contains a bunch of "problematic" shit because it was written by a very old guy who I still massively respect...

I remember watching this in cinemas when I was a kid, I must have been 7 when it came out, and it was an experience to remember, it even disturbed me in some ways. The humor is slightly more mature than in the comics I read, using more foul language and more adult comedy, which means it felt off back then, me being so young. But the truly wild stuff came during the last third of the movie, when actual drama starts to happen (not something that happened in the comedy-focused comics) and one of the lead actors really hams it up, selling everything that's happening to him really hard. For example, his mother gets kidnapped, and he's completely devastated. Even more stuff happens, something that I won't spoil, but overall it meant that my 7 year old self never forgot what I saw, with these goofy cartoon characters going through such an unpredictable amount of distress.

It's complicated, alright? You might watch it and not understand any of it, because its core audience has literally grown up and sometimes even learnt how to read consuming the source material, and that context is hard to replicate if you're not already into the comics. But I think that lack of knowledge might even be more interesting, because I can't imagine how watching something this absurd might feel.

Listen, I think the slapstick is hysterical, there's lots of practical effects used to recreate a ridiculous-looking cartoon aesthetic and the visuals alone have a shit ton of charm. If you want to watch something insane, this is it.

Mortadelo y Filemón contra Jimmy el Cachondo (2014)

So, you know how I said these characters are extremely popular in Spain? Surprisingly, only 3 movies have been made about them (though a couple of animated shows exist), and one of them is a terrible sequel that we don't like to talk about. Hell, there are a lot more videogames about them than there are movies, for some reason.

This is the last movie to see the light of day, and the only animated one, shockingly enough. Even more shockingly, despite positive critic reception and strong marketing, it underperformed on the box office, probably the reason why we haven't seen any follow-ups since.

It's a decently funny and very quotable comedy, at least for us, but I can't say if it stays as funny once it's been translated and the cultural context has been removed. I guess you would have to find that out yourself. Hopefully I'm not making a fool of myself by recommending it.

The Pepsi-Cola Addict (1982) by June Alison Gibbons; vanity-published in the 1980s and only existing in five libraries around the world (until i suppose its republishing this or last year), this is a fascinating and very weird little book, and the story behind it too is very sad and interesting. i have a pdf if anyone wants it. cw predatory relationships, incest references, suicide.

The Doloriad (2022) by Missouri Williams; strange and swirling little debut set in a post-apocalyptic future, some really incredible prose. cw incest.

Geek Love (1989) by Katherine Dunne; What if the mother of sideshow freaks was purposefully consuming poisons and alcohols and cetera while pregnant to engineer her kids to be attractions Would that be fucked up for what. cw incest and the ableism inherent in the sideshow "freaks" scene.

Lost in Translation (2003)

Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, this comedy-drama film stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson as fading movie star Bob Harris and recent college graduate Charlotte, respectively, who meets and develop an unlikely friendship while crossing paths in Tokyo.

The supporting cast includes: Giovanni Ribisi (aka Frank Buffay Jr. on Friends) as Charlotte’s workaholic husband, a celebrity photographer, and Anna Faris as bubbly Hollywood actress Kelly.

Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson don’t just bring something extra special to the table, but they bring something very human as well. Bill Murray, apart from his wry comedic style, is able to take his character’s exasperated tone to a more tactful approach. Scarlett Johansson is both serenely mesmerizing and remarkably mature for her young age, rising instantly from teen actress to major film star.

The script (which won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay) is written in a way that finds the perfect balance between isolation and connection. In writer/director Sofia Coppola’s case, she has a way of taking two lost American souls and placing them in a foreign city through minimal dialogue and poignant cinematography. In other words, the film literally depicts the age-old existential questions of what we ought to be doing with our lives.

In terms of observing the key aspect of the film, the two main characters experience different crises in unfamiliar territory in which language barriers and cultural divides are evident (note: this film has been called out by some critics for its egregious stereotypes of Japanese people). Further complicating matters of communication is the story taking place at a time before Facebook or FaceTime existed. Bob Harris, whose marriage seems to have reached a dead end, is having a midlife crisis while promoting a whiskey commercial. Charlotte is struggling with an identity crisis as she deals with a mundane new marriage. Faced with insomnia (in part due to jet lag), Bob and Charlotte find solace in each other’s company. Together, they grab a few drinks at the hotel lounge, spend a rollicking night out in Tokyo and even sing in a karaoke bar (during which Charlotte dons a pink Louise Brooks wig). The only difference is Bob is completely lost in translation as the title suggests, whereas Charlotte is mostly lost in trying to find her true purpose.

This particular film is entirely focused on the kindred spirit of its central characters in contrast to the typical mainstream film that provides a structured plot. What’s more, the film distinguishes intimate friendship from sexual desire (in spite of the R-rated sexual content of the movie). For instance, we get an inside look at Bob and Charlotte through a different lens than what we’re used to seeing in a romantic comedy. Not only that, but they converse openly with each other about their thoughts and concerns in a casual atmosphere of low-key emotional tension.

The soundtrack contains a few tracks that mostly revolve around shoegaze and dream pop music. The track list includes: “City Girl” by Kevin Shields (vocalist of the Irish-English rock band My Bloody Valentine), “Too Young” by Phoenix, “Sometimes” by My Bloody Valentine and “Just Like Honey” by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Bill Murray even performs a rendition of the hit Roxy Music song “More Than This”.

Lastly, the message is the idea of discovering a whole new prospect in the face of complex emotional battles via a momentary but life-changing chance encounter. That said, I recommend this spontaneous, refreshingly simplistic portrait of love and connection to everyone.

personal mphfpc recap since i finally finished reading all the books

spoilers for the entire mphfpc series ahead. this will mostly be me talking about the book's imperfections, because when i love a piece of media, i also love criticizing it to its core

so, i first read the books 1-4 in 2020 and i was SO obsessed!!?? i wasn't really into social media and fandom culture back then, so i didn't really have anyone to talk to about mphfpc and i remember being very sad about that. i also remember trying to make fanart of the characters, but i REALLY sucked at art back then and to this day i find old mphfpc drawings and cringe at them. maybe it's time to redraw some of those...

anyways, i read the fifth book when it first came out in germany and i kind of hated it lol. i was really rushing through it, because i couldn't wait for the fugh reunion. so i kind of missed out on the whole plot because i only cared about fiona and hugh.

basically, i recently finished rereading the books, because nostalgia or whatever and i'm kind of obsessed again. so...i'm just dumping some thoughts on the whole series here because on tumblr i can actually find ppl with mutual interests.

first of all there's literally SO MANY inconsistencies and plotholes?? what the actual fuck ransom riggs. idk how much of this is prevalent in the og books, because i mainly read the german translations, but sometimes riggs just forgets who hugh is i guess?? he mixes up his and horace's peculiarities once and at some point he is referred to as howard. who the fuck is howard. these are literally the most easiest mistakes to fix. does he not have an editor?

i'm not even gonna talk about the movie. i have a whole seperate post for it

it sometimes bothers me how only certain characters seem to serve a purpose. in every novel emma, enoch, millard and bronwyn are clearly the focus (besides jacob) despite the fact that the other characters are equally interesting and likeable. hugh, horace, claire, olive and obviously fiona are just NOT THERE for like the entirety of AMOD. are you kidding me

the entire second trilogy...is kind of a cashgrab. of course i'm happy we got more books and i liked them, but it's kind of obvious that the author simply had some pictures left and saw an opportunity to make some more profit out of them. that's not bad, but these books weren't necessary for the overall storyline.

the thing with the prophecy in DODA...the entire book was dedicated to finding the other lighteaters, but they don't really do anything in the end?? i kinda get why noor has to be the *main character*, but why introduce julius and sebbie when everything could have played out the same way without them?

julius and horace...is it really that hard to age julius down? it would've made that a lot less creepy. there is literally no reason for julius to so much older than horace. not sure if this could be considered queerbaiting, since i don't know a lot about that topic. would be grateful if anyone elaborated more on that.

hugh and fiona are still my favorite thing about these books THEY ARE PERFECT IN EVERY WAY AND DESERVED SO MANY MORE SCENES UGH. i don't need another jemma kiss i need FUGH. there is just so much potential and plus, we never really get to learn about their backstories?? like we know that they're from the 1840s, so how did they get into a loop a century later?

we really need to chill with the ramonda and wakanda criticism, please :( like. i'll be the first to admit that k'uk'ulkan and talokan have had me in a chokehold since i first saw the movie, but i'm not gonna sit here and act like they did nothing wrong. let's not lie to ourselves now — k'uk'ulkan wasn't exactly a paragon of diplomacy when he breached wakanda's borders and started making threats and giving ultimatums.

maybe things could have been alleviated if he and riri had actually managed to talk while in talokan (and we could have had a whole different second half of the movie), but they didn't give us that ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

did nakia have to use lethal force on the guards? i would argue that — from the wakandan point of view — yes, actually (as much as that hurts to say 😭). let's review:

ramonda and the rest of wakanda didn't know that shuri had asked to go to talokan, and k'uk'ulkan didn't clarify that when he met with ramonda (when 454 years old with no one to practice your diplomacy skills with you reach, fuck up any alliance you wish to make you certainly will). it looked like a hostage situation and he was acting like a hostage-taker. he said there was nothing she could do or give to him to convince him to give her daughter back, that he'd kill shuri if ramonda tried anything. to ramonda, that might as well have been a declaration of war [edit: as has been pointed out in the replies, he actually does tell ramonda that shuri asked to be taken to talokan, but ramonda doesn't follow up on this, she just asks him what she can offer in exchange for shuri's return.]

okoye had already warned ramonda that the talokanil were pretty much impossible to take out via conventional methods, i.e., stabbing (and okoye was only trying to kill them bc they were trying to off riri); so ofc nakia was going to go in there armed to the teeth as a precaution

one of the guards literally said, "kill the princess!" when nakia showed up and the other one put a knife to shuri's throat. they weren't exactly innocent. they were warriors as much as every other talokanil, and were prepared to fight to protect talokan just as nakia was to protect shuri — by any means necessary

so. ramonda saw k'uk'ulkan and talokan as a very hostile, active threat to her daughter and her nation, and she took measures as she saw fit. were her actions rational? hmm, no, i'd say not. but let's remember once again that this is a woman who has had to deal with so much loss and grief in less than a decade — her husband, her son (several times!), and now, the possibility of losing her daughter as well is looming. we can cut her some slack for putting her heart first for once!

there are underlying themes of familial love, duty, and loyalty in the movie (english translation of love & loyalty by dbn gogo, sino msolo, kamo mphela, young stunna, and busiswa here. themes of protecting family are also in la vida, laayli' kuxa'ano'one, no digas mi nombre, jele, born again, and pantera). shuri and ramonda to each other, to the memories of t'chaka and t'challa, even to nakia, okoye, and m'baku and vice-versa. k'uk'ulkan and fen to each other, k'uk'ulkan to the talokanil and vice-versa.

this definitely sounds like a wakandan anthem from the point when shuri is taken, but i'd argue that talokan starts feeling the same after the deaths of the guards — and neither of them would be wrong for that. love, duty, and loyalty are powerful driving forces, for better or for worse, with a weight capable of capsizing rationality.

from the very beginning, k'uk'ulkan was not acting rationally either. he operates on a very cut-and-dried, black-and-white worldview: either wakanda is an ally or an enemy, no room for nuance or negotiation. this viewpoint is, as we know, informed by his people's history and his own experiences with the surface world. he takes extremes with wakanda, cornering them against a rock and a hard place — assured destruction either by talokan's hands or the united nations'. he's acting from a place of love and duty, as ramonda is, but on a markedly larger and less palatable (to put it mildly) scale.

ramonda was put in a very difficult position as a mother and a ruler. it's not fair to solely fault her for the guards' deaths, or for talokan flooding wakanda. again, k'uk'ulkan made a terrible first impression, and that pretty much set the tone for everything else that went down afterwards. (though actually, if we're playing the blame game, let's pass the ball to the colonizers, the real villains anyway lmao. if spain hadn't been fucking around with the world in every direction, we wouldn't have to be here.)

so let's please, please put some respect on queen ramonda's name. it especially boggles the mind to see takes blaming her for "ruining" a ship, or for her own death. 🫠 seryoso ba talaga kayo??? 🥲

Review filled with probable unpopular opinions and spoilers.........

Before I start the review,I'd like to say that I went into watching this movie with the absolute mindset that there's no way a book like RWRB (which is one of my most favourite books of all time) can be adapted into a 2 hour long movie and since series wasn't doable, I'll have to make do with this. So I truly went in with the hopes of seeing my FirstPrince and generally getting the heart of the movie. But contrary to what people are saying, I think the movie tried to adapt too much of the book plot and lost the main vibe of the story in the process. As I go into the details and spoilers, I'd like to be clear that they are my opinions only. It's in no way an attack or criticisms on anyone who loved the movie. So please do not take it personally and consider it my ranting.

1. First problem I have with the movie is how much it tried to adapt of the book. I know, it sounds controversial but lemme explain. The book had too many plots and I personally felt like despite cutting down characters and simplifying some major plot points, the movie tried to show too much of too many plots. In the process, the plots that needed the time to breathe in order to translate the main heart of the story, got lost in translation. For example Henry losing his father, his existential crisis, him being in the closet for the crown. Even though he kept saying he cant be out and everything but the story never really showed what's at stake. Even Stephen Fry's King seemed very harmless which made the entire plot kind of moot. Same goes for Alex. Without his parents' divorce, his entire I don't think I'm good enough vibe just didn't come across. I generally felt like in order to get all the stories across, they didn’t spend any time to capture the fear of them being together, the horror of being out and the repercussions of what it meant and mostly why their characters are more than just 'Privileged public figures who live in palaces'. By not showing Henry's mom they erased the pain and impact he had of losing his father and by not showing June and Alex's parents' divorce,they erased the explanation about his fierceness and determination.

2. I personally was in support of aged-up Alex and Henry simply because it made their love-story more solid. But the problem was despite having aged-up cast, Matthew Lopez tried to keep their characters very true to the book. Which meant at time Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex looked extremely immature and weird acting like a early 20 something guy when he clearly was not. Also his entire 'They don't like me' 'I don't know if I'm good enough' insecurity seemed childish especially since none of his other issues were shown like his parents's divorce or ADHD. Again I think instead of going through the checklist of getting all the book plots done, they should have explained Alex's background a little more showing why him as a brown man feels this need to be the best, why he finds it so hard to accepted by people. Obviously they mention it, but they never get into it. Which is a shame tbh.

3. Erasing June and keeping Nora while not explaining who Nora is, kind of lightened Alex's character even more. Apart from helping Alex to realize his sexuality, she literally served no purpose. At least if June were there, they could've shown some sibling bonding and a deeper look at Alex's character and explain the whole dynamic of being the first son and daughter of USA while being POCs.

4. The few changes that truly bothered me which served no purpose at all and again changed the tone of the film are Alex's confession scene in the rain and him giving a speech without Henry's input. I don't know why they chose not to give us the passionate reunion when Alex storms into the Kensington and instead cut to the V&A scene because honestly it didn’t make sense. We could do without the V&A scene and instead spend more time on them talking about their feelings more and just spend more time into that moment to build its momentum. It all felt extremely rushed which easily could have been avoided. And also why Alex will choose to come out without Henry and make a speech about their relationship without their input made no sense. It just made it seem like being Bi and dating Henry is easier for Alex and he had no real threat by putting himself out there like that whereas in the book we could feel how vulnerable it made him and how scared they both were when he made the 'America, he is my choice' speech.

Now the things that I liked/loved :

1. The lake scene. The entire scene was so well done, maybe because for once they took the time to slow down and let Henry's emotion show for once. I thought it was more beautiful than it was in the book.

2. Alex's involvement in the politics. If there was one thing that Matthew Lopez did to adjust the plot to Alex's age was this and I personally liked seeing this bit because again for the first time it gave us a glimpse of who Alex was and what his ambitions were which was lacking from the rest of the film.

3. Alex's scenes with his family was spot on. No complain there.

4. Alex and Henry's intimate scenes were well done. Although I wish they were a bit longer and more sensual but I liked it. I am confused though why is this film R-rated (except for TZP's butt scene) because the sex scenes were extremely innocent.

5. Henry when he finds out about the leak. That scene was again well done because they took the time to show the emotion and the heart of the movie.

To sum it up, I feel like the movie tried to adapt too much of the book. I think Matthew truly made the movie like a fan which in my opinion backfired a little. Because I think since this book is too long to be adapted into a movie, the best course of action should've been to capture the main theme of the story and make many changes accordingly. I think he chose to serve the book lovers, which is not a bad way to make an adaptation but I think as a movie, it is what let it down. As the book fan, you probably will be happy to see the plot checklists being ticked in. But as a movie, I found the plots very rushed, characters underdeveloped and underutilized, unnecessary storylines and the love story underdeveloped. Although I would give kudos to Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez because they were good as Henry and Alex. I wish Matthew had done a better job with their character development because these two could have really made Henry and Alex into 100% perfection and take the movie to the next level.

Rating Hollow Knight Spanish translations by how much I like them from highest to lowest:

Cruces Olvidados / Cruces Infectados (Forgotten/Infected Crossroads): This one is not only accurate but it absolutely kicks ass to enter the Infected Crossroads and the word "infectados" just taking up all of the screen as you look at it in shock. This was likely a side effect of the titles having one word with bigger font than the others and English having a adjective+noun structure while Spanish has a noun+adjective structure. 11/10

Zote el Todopoderoso: Good One, sounds even more dramatic than Zote the Mighty. Well done. 57/10

Ciudad de Lágrimas (City of Tears): Nothing to criticize here. Accurate, gets the vibe across. 10/10

Claro de la Esperanza (Spirit's Glade): This one actually translates to "Glade of Hope" which is a lovely name to give to a place, even if it isn't really what it is. I can forgive the inaccuracy if only because the name is nice and some spirits are really encouraging. 9/10

Bocasucia (Dirtmouth): Pretty literal (dirtymouth), it gives the town a specific vibe of abandonement imo. It really sounds like a little vilage for bugs. 8/10

Coliseo de los Insensatos (Colosseum of Fools): Insensatos is technically correct but imagine just casually mentioning this name in conversation. I feel like there are shorter words that could express the idea of "fool" in a way that fits the context better. It works but it feels a bit too formal. Like Colosseum of the Unreasonable People doesn't hit as much. 7/10

Señor Desleal: It's meh. I would have used "Señor Traidor", because "Desleal" reads more like a passive act of breaking loyalty, instead of an active one. "Señor" is alright as a translation imo, the other option is "Don" and that just doesn't work. 6/10

Nidoprofundo (Deepnest): Look, this is a tough one. On one hand, it makes sense and is a literal translation. On the other hand, Nidoprofundo is a long name. It would have worked to keep Deepnest untranslated to mirror "Hallownest" but I can't blame them. 5/10

La Descendiente Femenina (Gendered Child): on one hand, "Gendered" is a tricky word to translate, since "género" can apply to gender, genre, or even textile. "Descendiente" (descendant) makes the title more formal but it fits, and it also is a bit more ambiguous regarding Hornet's age I like that. Still, my main issue is that this title is misleading because it implies that Hornet's siblings are the opposite of female which uh, for many people ends up being "male". 4/10

El Destello / Absoluto Destello (Radiance /Absolute Radiance): OK I don't like it, but I kind of understand why it was chosen. "Destello" sounds more like "Glimmer" or "Sparkle" to me. "Resplandor" probably worked better but since that's already the title of a popular movie it could be conflicting. 3/10

Terminavidas (Life Ender): Dude this sucks. But also it's Zote's nail I think he would name it something that doesn't have a nice ring to it and sounds cringy. 2/10

"....Tú eres el Hollow Knight" (You are the Hollow Knight): Terrible. Why couldn't you they just translate it? "Caballero Vacío" can work well. Literally nobody would have questioned it and you can still keep the game title untranslated if you want it to be more recognizable. But using "Hollow Knight" in-game makes you lose the immersion especially considering when it shows up in the Abyss climb scene. 1/10

Why do netizens love to hear that Cantonese has bad mouth?

This was one of my most favorite interviews of Director Shiotani - and although this is completely translated by means of software, I like to think more or less the context has been captured well so I'm sharing the translation here (online translators, we've come a long, long way).

What I do always is double-check both (google and deepL) piece by piece, one because both software do not do well with big amounts of text at the same time, and I do this at least twice because I notice that the translation gets better and the sentences are more coherent, especially when you use deepL. In fact, I ended up using mostly the deepL translations because I feel it's more a contextual translation rather than a word-per-word. You'll notice that both of the translations only slightly vary, though.

There is a popular anime series that began airing in 2012 and has continued for eight years. It is "PSYCHO-PASS:"

In October 2019, "PSYCHO-PASS 3," the third season of the series, will begin. Director Naoyoshi Shiotani, who has worked on the series since the first season, looks back on the third season and reveals that he was prepared for criticism.

In March 2020, "PSYCHO-PASS 3: FIRST INSPECTOR," the final installment of the third season, will be released in theaters. Amidst the high expectations for this completely new film, which is expected to reveal various mysteries that were not discussed in the TV series, we present a must-read interview with Director Shiotani to find out his thoughts on the matter.

Psycho-Pass Synopsis

The story takes place in the near future, where people's security is maintained by the "Sibyl System," a gigantic surveillance network that quantifies the soul. The film depicts detectives with the "Dominator," a gun that measures the "crime coefficient," a numerical value related to crime, as they pursue "potential criminals" before they commit their crimes.

I wanted to make sure to portray the drama of Shinya Kogami in "SS" before the third season.

The TV series "PSYCHO-PASS 3" (hereafter referred to as the third TV season) aired from October to December 2019. Looking back , what are your thoughts on it?

Anyway, I think it's been a long time ....... About 4 years ago, I started planning the third TV season at the same time as the movie "PSYCHO-PASS: Sinners of the System" ("SS", to be released in 2019).

Around the time after "PSYCHO-PASS the Movie" (released in 2015), Fuji Television asked me what to do next. At that time, I had a vague idea that even if I were to make a third TV season, it would be centered on the story that continued from the movie version, and the characters would continue with Akane Tsunemori (CV: Kana Hanazawa) and Shinya Kogami (CV: Tomokazu Seki) as its central characters.

I was shocked when I saw the release of information about the third TV season. I didn't expect the main characters to change. ......! And.

In my mind, "PSYCHO-PASS" was created with the image of focusing on a turning point in a major current. (GT: in a big stream). I dare to use the word "justice," but the story is centered on the protagonist's continuous search for the answer to the question, "What is my own justice?” The central axis of the story is to depict the continuous search for this answer.

So I think it is quite natural that the central character, the protagonist, changes with the times.

However, I thought that changing the main character and creating a new work would be the next best thing, if I were to do it.

I was told that it was okay to take a "leap forward”. It would be interesting to continue what we have been doing, but it doesn't have to be the Public Safety Bureau. For example, the young detectives/detective boys* could be the main character. I was like, "What are you talking about?” (Laughs.) But I thought it would be okay to change the way I thought about it and make it that way. I felt like I had a boost in my back**.

*young detectives = I chose this because it was translating to “detective boys” and when i looked at the romanization it was “shonen

** could be re-contextualized as “I had support behind my back” = TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT! 

That was the reason behind the birth of the new Criminal Division 1.

However, I think the challenge is to create a sustained flow of the series, rather than to abruptly introduce a new Division 1. If you skip the process to the third TV season, viewers will be confused. They watch the third TV season and ask, "Why is Kogami back in Japan?" I told the producer and the production committee that he has his own drama and I wanted to portray that so that I could create "SS," which would also be a new series line.

Therefore, we discussed the composition of "SS" and the third TV season almost simultaneously.

How did you go about the composition? (series composition)

Makoto Fukami, who has been working on the script since the first TV season, and Tow Ubukata, who has been working on the script since the second TV season, participated in the composition of the new series from the beginning, and then we asked Ubukata to put together the composition (GT:summary) for the third TV season. Ryo Yoshigami, author of the novel "PSYCHO-PASS ASYLUM," also participated in the writing of SS and the third TV season. The third season is a story that we created together with the three of them.

SS, which is the link between the two, was based on the synopsis I wanted to create, and I worked with Fukami-san and Yoshigami-san individually to shape it. SS has a flow as a series leading to the third season, but I thought it would be wonderful if I could create a story that would show each artist's individuality, and this is how we came to this arrangement.

6. What is your darkest fear about writing?

Starting off dark! I like it! My darkest fear is that I will die before I’m able to publish anything and nobody will find my writing. Essentially, dying in complete obscurity. Dunno if that’s narcissistic or something but that’s my biggest fear related to writing.

7. What is your deepest joy about writing?

Related to that last one, I find the most joy when I hear from people who have read my works. Not just the good stuff either, I love hearing what could be done better (if I’ve asked for that kind of criticism of course lol) and if there is something that is either factually or culturally incorrect. Like when I wrote something with German in it and exclusively used google translate bc I don’t know German and a fluent native speaker told me it was okay but the grammar was unnatural. I love that shit.

19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did it start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?

*claps hands very loud and sits forward in my chair* Well! I have basically been writing since I learned how to read, which was like… age six or something, I don’t remember. I started writing because reading amazing stories stimulated some creativity in my little brain and it needed to come out, I wasn’t satisfied just reading stories or watching movies or shows. I had stories to tell too, and by golly I was gonna tell them. There were lots of bumps along the way of course, almost all of them caused by my own belief that writing/art wasn’t a “real career” and that if I was going to college it had to be for a science or a social science. There were times where I wasn’t reading or writing anything that wasn’t academic for years. Where I am now is that I’m an art major getting a minor in creative writing. I believe in myself and my creativity now. I am currently brimming with ideas, I just need to commit to one and write it. Where I’m going is forward, wherever I can end up writing and publishing a book. I want to set up a writing schedule that works for me so that I don’t have too many of those bouts of not writing at all, I want to set reading goals for the year so that I have less bouts of not reading at all, and I desperately want to go on a writing retreat bc that sounds like the ultimate vacation to me. Go somewhere gorgeous and just write.

25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?

Oh my GOD I have so many of these… I’m so glad you asked this… Literally all of my characters are from stories that are WIPs, but I will briefly explain their story’s premise for you.

Ronny is an English major whose story is about a summer vacation to San Diego where she meets a bunch of cool surfers and skaters who help her find her place in the world. Her irrelevant fact is that she has gone skydiving once in her life and didn’t completely hate it.

Paul is from the same story as Ronny, he owns the local surf/skate shop. His irrelevant fact is that despite being a surfer and his nickname being Pauly, he has never once listened to the Beatles. Bonus slightly more relevant fact, he also doesn’t like The Beach Boys that much but plays them in the shop anyway because it “fits the vibe, man.”

Ellis is from a story about a shattered magical family, and is the only boy among three other siblings. He also has a magical power called Suggestion: he make anyone do anything he says to them. His irrelevant fact is that he once used his power to get into the newest Star Wars movie showing for free, but it was the Phantom Menace. It is still at the top of his list of biggest wastes of his powers.

Juliet is from a sci-fi story about time travel and fixing mistakes. She is from the far flung future. Her irrelevant fact is that she is legally not allowed to drive, in the future nor the past. She is a menace to society with no spacial awareness inside a vehicle.
