â . · . miguel bernardeau, twenty-one, male, he / him . · . â fitzwilliam 'fitz' phĂ©nix-alvarez lives in that huge mansion over there! no, not that one. look for white stucco walls & terracotta shingles and thatâll be it. the nhl defenseman has offered occasional glimpses of soft yellow walls and an impressive collection of plants in the background of social media posts, but all of that is nothing compared to seeing the opulence in person. theyâve remained protective as ever since moving to tercet court two months ago, but it seems like they mightâve gotten a little more mistrustful too. maybe thatâs why theyâre rumored to have such a distant relationship with everyone else who lives on this street. â . · . ooc info: ollie, they / them, 21, est . · . â career claim: cale ma/kar.
BASICS
Full name: Fitzwilliam PhĂ©nix-Alvarez Nickname: Fitz Birth date: September 29th Languages: English, Spanish, Quebecois Francois Hometown:Â
PHYSICAL
Age: 21 Weight: 196 lbs Height: 6âČ2âł Body build: athletic, lean Eye color: grey-blue Faceclaim: Miguel Bernardeau Glasses or contacts: neitherÂ
Tattoos: a raven in flight over his left shoulder blade, monochromatic vines winding up his left bicep
Scars: most predominantly a thin scar near the base of his neck where a skate slashed him when he was fourteen ; several other smaller scars of less note, especially on his hands --- much less noticeable
PERSONALITY
Good personality traits: observant, calculating, protective Bad personality traits: mistrustful, dishonest, aggressiveÂ
Fitz comes across as very confident and in control, and at ease in his skin. The truth couldnât be farther from it. He works hard to put forward the easy front he does --- and some days he canât tell which one is more real. He has a dishonest smile that masquerades as honest, and a tendency to manipulate those around him when necessary to shed suspicion off himself. He can be almost charming at times, at least extremely amiable. Despite all this, Fitz is not rash or impulsive -- in fact everything he does is carefully calculated, though he goes to great lengths so it does not come across as so. The one place he feels truly effortless is on the ice.
He finds it hard to truly allow people close to him and to really see beyond the most superficial layers of himself. Furthermore, there is a deep-seated fear of not being enough and being forgotten ; he finds it easier to not let anyone close so thereâs less chance of this happening.
THE STORY ( i rly was gunna try to write this nice and eloquently but... u get this instead đ )
â fitz was born to up and coming spanish actress reyna alvarez in chicago. the result of a messy one-night stand, but reyna ultimately decided to keep the baby. he is indeed named after fitzwilliam darcy from pride and prejudice bc his motherâs first breakout role was in a film adaptation of the book and she loved the book after reading it. how unfortunate for him.
â his birth father was never in the picture, but the man he would come to know as his father came into the picture a year or so after his birth. already one of the top architects in north america, paul robert phenix was in chicago for a conference and he and reyna fell in love. fitz has been told itâs was all very romantic. so then the happy family moved to pittsburgh where his fatherâs architecture firm was based.
â despite growing up with two parents who raked in a fair amount of cash, they made sure nothing was just given to fitz. theyâd both had their humble beginnings and big believers in tough love, they made sure not to spoil their son. they did however make sure he was sheltered from the media when it poked around and the two things they did pay for without question were his education and sports.
â he started playing hockey when he was six after seeing a pens game on tv while they were out at dinner and knowing he just had to do it --- and never stopped. he got recruited to the us national team development program when he was sixteen and spent his last two years of high school in michigan living with a billet family most do who are with the program, which gave him a huge sense of ânormalcy.â but really he was far from normal, his development taking great steps over those two years leading up to his draft year.
â queue the cale ma/kar career claim lads aka all the hockey development & logistics u can probably skip if u donât care laksdjf:Â
one year before graduation and a draft, he vocally committed to playing at university of massachusetts - amherst. he went fourth overall to the la kings in the 2017 draft ( yeah technically irl that pick belonged to the avs but sh ), and proceeded to remain loyal to his commitment and play two years at umass despite his new top five prospect status. he was put into a first pair role from the start of his freshman year ( 2017-18 ), was a huge part in bringing the umass team up from the bottom of the standings. he plays for team usa in world juniors 2017 and 2018.
his sophomore year ( 2018-19 ), they make it all the way to the frozen four. fitz gets announced as the hobey baker winner and the day after they get knocked out of the tournament. not long after that he signs his entry contract with the kings and finishes out the season with them. he scores his first nhl goal on his first shot in game 3 of the first round of playoffs irl the kings donât make playoffs but again shh. they get knocked out in the first round and fitz goes home and trains harder than ever.
he come back to kings training camp the next season ( 2019-20 ) more determined than ever to make the team. he does so out of camp and has an incredible rookie campaign. he gets injured in december and misses a few games but is back mid-january. fitz is given the calder ( award that goes to the best rookie in the nhl ) at the end of the season. technically cale hasnât won this yet but we all know he will.
â la is a bustling city and fitz is a fan of one night stands : he just doesnât feel like he has time for a relationship and hookups scratch that itch. heâs not an asshole about it, really. there is typically that understanding that this is a one time, no strings attached thing. but this one girl he sleeps with in march obviously does not get this memo and continues to not get the memo. she starts seriously stalking him in the following months and eventually he gets a restraining order against her ( use ur imagination kids ). heâs not really comfortable staying in his own apartment downtown for the time being though after he still sees her around. he stays with a teammate until the season ends, which then brings us to his connection to tercet court.
â paul robert phenix, now world reknowned architect, had a hand in designing several of the homes on tercet court, including one in the style of old money spanish mediterrianian villas that he designed with his wife in mind to be their new home. fitzâs mother had loved the house and moved in for a few years after the court opened but with her taking fewer roles up in the movie industry and getting exceedingly more lonely, she decided to embrace the more nomadic livestyle of her husband and moved out about a year and a half ago. since then the home stood vacant ( though certainly still cared for by several paid landscapers and maids ) until fitzâs dilemma arose a few months ago.
â a few phone calls and a begrudging agreement to pay the extremely steep taxes on the place for the year ( again, tough love and fitz may be a pro-athlete but heâs still making less than a million a year with his entry level contract ), and fitz moved in about two months ago ( say mid-may ).
MISC
â tri-lingual. father is french-canadian and his mother is spanish. needless to say he grew up a little confused. that worked itself out soon enough though. uses he uses quebois french in-season kind of frequently to talk to a couple teammates. really only uses his spanish to talk to his mother and family.
â since moving in fitz has filled the mansion with plants. he absolutely does not seem like a plant guy but he is... absolutely loves it. his major at umass was kinesology bc he thought it would be the most helpful and knew he wasnât going to graduate but he snuck in some out-of-major classes on horticulture. truly just likes plants a lot. they donât judge him.
â probably set up his own puck shooting pad in the backyard. why not thereâs enough space. he had to retrieve a couple pucks from the bottom of the pool though which has been good incentive to not miss the net lmao. he also has revamped one of the rooms in the house to have synthetic ice.
â runs in the morning before it gets hot. skates a few days of the week in the afternoon. home gym in the house is definitely a perk but he prefers to work out with others because it feels more productive.
â probably drives like. a range rover.
â offensive defenseman. likes to jump up in the rush and is good at break out passes as well as zone entry. earned his place quarterbacking the first powerplay towards the end of the season. he can be quite physical when he needs to be though and donât ever go after his goalie. ( his nhl.com player page )
â heâs not a recluse by any means, but he has no desire to built connections in tercet court so probably hasnât actively reached out. theyâre likely to have met outside of the small community or if your character forcibly came and introduced themselves. or if they knew each other already mayhaps??
â oh and heâs bi. like really really bi. obv not advertised given his career path but heâs not having some crisis over it either. it just is. probably has a stack of ndaâs next to the condoms ready to go at anytime alsdkfj.
OOC
hey lads. iâm ollie !! for those around for round 1.0 of this rp i played alya ( the sports photog ). i am back and this time going back to what i do best : playing hockey boys đđđ.

Interprofessional learning and practise. APT010l003Y
Interprofessional learning and practise. APT010l003Y (1443 words)
Dramatherapists, whether youâre still in training or have been a registered practitioner in this field for years, we all âkind ofâ know that other arts therapiesâ techniques can creep into our work. We are often encouraging our clients to embody their experiences and feelings and Iâm sure you have a stack of arts materials, a box of small world objects and a drum (at the very least) that all make regular appearances in your sessions. We borrow from other modalities regularly, but whatâs the link? How relevant are the skills found in the related professions to the work we do with our clients, and to us as therapist? And why is it that they cross over into our field of work seemingly so easily?
Iâve got two left feet, never got the end of âthree blind miceâ on the recorder at school and can barely draw a half decent stick man, so how can I incorporate dance movement psychotherapy, music therapy, art psychotherapy and or play therapy into my work as a dramatherapist? And should I even bother? Canât we just stick to what we know and draw on our knowledge and experience using character, story and script work?
I had the opportunity to attend workshops for all other modalities within arts therapy with the aim of gaining some further understanding of why I often incorporate at least some of their techniques in my own work with clients of all ages, across broad and varied settings. The first thing that really struck me about the arts therapies is that they all encourage a type of creativity that often comes naturally to children. When thinking about the development of a very young child before any sort of cognitive understanding or clarity, there often comes sound, movement, play and creativity, all of which can be linked to a means of communication. This concept resonated with Sue Jenningsâs developmental paradigm of âEmbodiment, Projection and Roleâ and lectures and research suddenly came hurtling back and reminding me of the importance of understanding a clientâs early interactions in relation to self and other.
One of the first things mentioned in the music therapy workshop was the idea of being âalong sideâ a client without the use of words, communicating through a âtranscendence of languageâ and âmusic links with our innermost emotional, spiritual and most private selves, and yet is also a social experience.â (Stige and Bunt, 2014)
I learnt that a lot of research has been done into the very earliest stages of communication and there is an inherent musicality in pre-verbal infant/carer interactions. During this particular workshop I was struck by the realisation of how powerful and evocative music can be in relation to feelings. You know, every time you hear that specific song and you suddenly feel like youâre headlining your very own world tour? Or the moment in a film when youâre holding back tears and then the music starts and suddenly your popcorn is swimming in a small salty river of your own making? And havenât we all stared moodily out of the window of a bus or car and imagined ourselves in a music video? No? Just me? Well, if we admit it or not, music can affect us. It can move us, and it can be a vital tool in helping us connect to emotions we may not be able to vocalise and sometimes they may even be feelings we arenât fully aware of.
(the picture shows just some of the instruments used during the music therapy workshop)

I found a similar connection during my participation in the dance movement psychotherapy workshop. I learnt that the therapistsâ intention is for the client to embody an experience rather than rely solely on words. We were invited to take part in a pair exercise where one person leads, moving as they wish with a motivation or an emotion in mind, and their partner aims to simply be âalong-side.â They are not controlling or changing the clientâs behaviour but taking the time to notice and support them physically. After all, the therapistsâ role is not to try to âfixâ but to be âwithâ the client. This reinforced for me, the importance of considering the whole person when working therapeutically. I have personally found I difficult at times to work in the body both in training to be a dramatherapist and in my previous training as an actor but I also respect and understand how important it is for this type of creative therapeutic work. It is vital we learn to notice what a client is communicating beyond what they may or may not be saying and developing these skills can be particularly important, especially when working with clients who are none verbal or who have limited verbal communication skills. The idea of working with the whole client in therapy, establishing a link between body and mind, which is less commonly found in more traditional and more cognitive therapeutic approaches, appeared paramount across all the arts therapies and is an idea supported by Bessel van der Kolk, in âThe body keeps the score.â This book explores how trauma is manifested in the body, it has links to some illness and disease, and it is interesting to see how that may influence our work with our clients.
I experienced a theme of transcendence of language across all the arts therapies as each workshop focused at some point on the therapistsâ ability to be along side the client in their expression of self. It was clearly less important to focus on what the client created and much more about what they were communicating. The importance is not on the creation of a piece of music, a dance or a sculpt but it is the lived experience between the client and therapist that offers the most value and space for therapeutic change.Â
The play therapy workshop put emphasis on giving the child permission, not to change or question their choices but to be alongside, to allow them to play and to be creative. This brought up my desire to âfixâ or to âmake betterâ and I often find myself wanting to step into the role of the rescuer and regularly explore this in supervision. The notion that there is no right and wrong is an idea I found, present throughout all modalities and something I learnt in each of these workshops. I found this vital in helping to establish not only a safe space for the child or client to work but also to enable a relationship between client and therapist to form. Arguably one of the most important factors for therapy.
I entered these workshops with concern over my ability, or lack thereof (thanks shadow) and thoughts such as, âI canât dance, am I too fat for leggings? Iâm no good at art. I canât play an instrument and what if I play out of tune?â all allowed my self-judgement to creep in before Iâd even started. It made me think of how our life experiences, including experience of trauma, contribute to the development and growth of the shadow and what this can mean in terms of our relationship to creativity, and in turn, therapy.
The art therapist began by sharing a quote from the Peter London book, âNo more second-hand artâ and stated âMeaning, not beauty, is what we are after.â This really resonated with my own sense of judgement and the pressure I place on myself to be âgood enough.â In relation to my clients, I noticed how important it is to allow their feelings to be present and how a non-judgemental and permissive approach found throughout the arts therapies can help to hold a client throughout the work.
So, how and why do we incorporate these other modalities in our work? Well, I realised through attending these workshops that, in one way or another that they all go hand in hand. Creativity is not limited. It isnât about choosing and rigidly sticking to one form or the other. As creative therapists we have a set of tools which change and grow as we learn and understand and they can be adapted to our clients. We, as humans are not mind then body. We are one whole being, we feel as well as think. Our emotions live in us and not apart from us. Creativity is usually the first and the most natural, innate means of communication and if we can keep this in mind and continue to understand its importance, we can enable our clients to work with their emotion, their life experiences, their trauma and pave the way for understanding, permission and positive change.

REMEMBER WHEN YOUR POTENTIAL WAS A PROMISE INSTEAD OF A REGRET? ; aka the harry potter au, which i talked about writing & then rambled about to @diealive ( bless you, my friend ). this is really long, i am very sorry.
FIRSTLY, there are possibilities for variants of this, but the MAIN ONE involves erik as a ghost â an actual ghost, yâknow. before he died, he obviously had a life, although true to poto canons, it was a sucky life. during the time period of the early 1800s in which he was born ( for this, the year 1832 ), it was probably not a good thing to be a magical child, especially one born with what other magical people called urielâs touch gone wrong, & what non-magical folk just called deformity. since he was aware of the fact that he was terribly different from the people he was ( sometimes ) around, erik did what he thought was right â try his hardest to fit in. sadly, this attempt also involved attempts to suppress his magical abilities & anyone whoâs seen fantastic beasts & where to find them knows what this results in. here is the harry potter wiki on OBSCURIALS & here are some important parts. see OBSCURIAL NOTES below this section.      an obscurial is a young wizard or witch who developed a dark parasitical magical force, known     as an obscurus, as a result of their magic being suppressed through psychological or physical     abuse. an obscurial may lose control when they reach their emotional & mental breaking point,     releasing their obscurus as an invisible ( or nearly invisible ) destructive wind. in extreme cases,     they may physically transform into an obscurus [1]. usually, children possessed by an obscurus     almost always die before their 10th birthdays, but as exemplified by credence barebone,     a wizard with tremendous latent powers can survive longer [2]. obscurials were believed to     have completely disappeared from the united states of america by 1926 according to seraphina     picquery [...] an obscurus had not existed in the united states for over 200 years [3]. while still     unconfirmed, ariana dumbledore was potentially an obscurial too, as the description of her "illness"     given by her brother aberforth fit the description of an obscurial; "it destroyed her, what they did:     she was never right again. she wouldnât use magic, but she couldnât get rid of it; it turned her inward     & drove her mad, it exploded out of her when she couldnât control it, & at times she was strange &     dangerous. but mostly she was sweet & scared & harmless". it would also explain how, as     an untrained witch, she was capable of killing her mother in an uncontrolled rage with magic [4].     sidenote, ariana dumbledore was born in 1885.Â
OBSCURIAL NOTES. [1] considering the fact that erik was a. born in the early 1800s b. born with the same deformities as in stage-movie combination ( which i use as reference, because continuity with icons oh my god ) c. a magical chid, he was likely abused. [2] letâs look at poto canon for erik: heâs a genius in many things, even in the 04 movie, madame giry: [about erik] he's a genius. he's an architect & designer, he's a composer & magician... a genius, monsieur!. other canon ( kay, leroux ) note that he was a magician for the shah of persia, where he designed many torture chambers. in general, if heâd been allowed to show his work to the world, he likely wouldâve ben quite well loved & well known for his ridiculous amount of talent. translating those parts of various poto canon into harry potter things ( factor in that erik did, in fact, attend hogwarts, which will be explained later ), the latent potential he has is a lot. a ridiculous amount, oh my god. similarly to credence, heâd definitely make it past 10, which with his hogwarts years, he does. [3] itâs noted that obscurials hadnât been in the UNITED STATES in over 200 years, but this is EUROPE, not america. [4] using the ariana theory in reference to the whole usa obscurial thing & factoring in arianaâs birth year being 1885, erik, born in 1832 with all of that shit stacked against him ( but with a fuckton of latent power that he gains at least some slight control over thanks to his hogwarts years ), erik may have had a lot of similar issues in emotional things, which also contributes to being an obscurial. if ariana was an obscurial, there was a fuckton of coverup for that.Â
ONTO HOGWARTS YEARS ( see HOGWARTS NOTES for more elaboration / misc. things, also considering erik traveled a lot in poto canon, whoâs to say he was initially born in france is that even ever mentioned? anywhere??? ). erik wouldâve been sorted in 1843 because maths. like other young wizards & witches, he received a wand from ollivanderâs, because the family has literally been in the wandmaking business since 382 BCE. due to the core of the wand, it may not have been MADE by the ollivanders. note, the wand chooses the wizard ( or witch ) is a legit thing, so thereâs trial & error. factoring in wandlore & how wand wood & core also are important, due to his ridiculous musical aptitude ( which will be across literally everything i do, thatâs the whole point ), the core of his wand is horned serpent horn â this core is sensitive to parseltongue, & can warn their owners of danger by emitting a low musical tone. the noted wandmakers to use this core are isolt sayre & james steward, meaning the wand was likely purchased or whatnot by the ollivander family, but was manufactured in america. the wand is made from hornbeam â hornbeam selects for its life mate the talented witch or wizard with a single, pure passion, which some might call obsession - more kindly - vision, which will almost always be realised. hornbeam wands adapt more quickly than almost any other to their ownerâs style of magic, & will become so personalised, so quickly, that other people will find them extremely difficult to use even for the most simple of spells. hornbeam wands likewise absorb their ownerâs code of honour, whatever that might be, & will refuse to perform acts - whether for good or ill - that do not tally with their masterâs principles. they are particularly fine-tuned & sentient wands. NOW, ACCORDING TO WANDLORE, wand length is more of a PERSONALITY based thing, so uh the examples were hagridâs wand at 16âł because he has a big personality & umbridgeâs wand being short because of her tldr shitty personality. erik is a visionary, heâs filled with passion & whatnot, refer back to literally every poto canon, heâs also reclusive but proud of his intelligence & rightfully so. according to garrick ollivander, matching a wand to a wizard solely by height is a crude measure. long wands tend to suit those with big personalities, of a more spacious & dramatic style of magic. neater wands favour elegant & refined spell-casting. particularly short wands will choose wizards whose character lacks something [x]. with all of that in mind, the tl;dr of this is the wand he received was hornbeam, horned serpent horn, 11âł.  the fact that erik was trained at hogwarts undoubtedly contributed to the fact that he didnât still die as a teenager or something.Â
HOGWARTS NOTES. erik was sorted into into RAVENCLAW HOUSE. he lacked the gryffindor pride & courage, his cunning came from his intelligence & not from ambition or a desire to get to the top regardless of what others had to go through, he does possess hufflepuff loyalty, but only to a very small handful of people ( literally like at most maybe 2 or 3, depending on timeframe ). the pride he does posses is in his intelligence, & he highly respects that in others. he used to end up in detention here & there for fighting with other students, often because they would attempt the jackass mask grab. honestly, heâs super lucky that no one died because of the obscurus. he probably excelled at OWLS & NEWTS with scores that couldâve gotten him a lot of jobs, but uh, you know. ERIK HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAST A PATRONUS, BUT LACKS THE HAPPY MEMORIES TO DO SO. theoretically, he has the potential to perform a great deal of powerful magic, but due to the problem of being an obscurial, the latent ridiculous power he has is mostly directed toward NOT DYING. due to this fact, he never displays his full magical potential & power in any other scenario than one where he becomes the obscurus. he graduated in 1849.Â
POST HOGWARTS YEARS & DEATH, again thereâs a notes section for this. while the plot of poto is usually 1870, erik doesnât make it to 1870. he makes it to the middle of 1862, giving him another 13 years to live after graduating from hogwarts. after hogwarts, erik made a living doing odd jobs, but never stayed in one place for long. often, he wished to return to hogwarts, the place he saw as the only âhomeâ he ever had. in early 1862, he demolished a good deal of shops & killed a good number of people in an uncontrolled rage. obviously, the ministry looked into this, as both muggles & wizards & witches were among the casualties. terrified at the fact that heâd lived so long as an obscurial, they sent aurors after him to eliminate him as a threat, which they technically did, but the greater majority of those sent after him also ended up dead as collateral.Â
POST HOGWARTS & DEATH NOTES. after his death, erikâs ghost returned to hogwarts as he always wished. at some point during albus dumbledoreâs teaching career as the transfiguration professor, erik was confined to the school grounds, as he was still incredibly volatile ( dumbledore vouched for confinement rather than the most extreme option â exorcism ). he gravitates to students who are shunned, bullied, lonely, or afraid as he wishes to help them ( erik literally hates himself so much, but he also has so much empathy for others who are suffering & he doesnât want them to suffer ).Â
MISC. NOTES & VARIANTS OF THE AU. variants include erikâs school years lining up with tom riddleâs school years, although other than that, nothing else changes about him. thereâs also marauderâs timeframe, which is the same as everything else, but putting him in that ballpark for his hogwarts years. no matter what, erik literally despises tom riddle ( a handsome & deceptive little shit whom a great deal of people liked because he was attractive & erik just SEETHES because they canât see tom for what he really is ). erik has been suspected of taking revenge on bullies for hurting other students, although he only ever attacks the bullies 1 from behind 2 when theyâre alone. these attacks are sometimes attributed to peeves, because no one witnesses them, really. if he had been less of a mess ( even just not an obscurial ), he wouldâve been interested in teaching at hogwarts. heâd absolutely adore myrtle & theyâd definitely be friends ( godbless @diealive i never knew i needed this so much ). other possible friendships include severus snape & quirinus quirrell, the former due to honestly the very clear bullying, the latter also including the bullied factor & also attempts to help him have better perception of other people ( quirrell is noted to be â a brilliant fellow â, although he was also completely deceived by voldemort; the likely conclusion is his genius is entirely academic ). he would be incredibly impressed with hermione granger. heâd probably also gravitate to neville longbottom. in the tom years & even in the marauderâs timeframe honestly ok ever since dumbledore came to be a teacher & wasnât uh... in with grindewald, dumbledore would be his favorite faculty member. he also loves the fact that flitwick has a choir, ok.Â
TL;DR, hogwarts helped a very hurt obscurial survive through a hellish life, although he ultimately meets a shitty death, but gets to return to the place he called home.

How Software Developers Can Identify Their Most Profitable Price Point?
Whether you are an experienced developer or are just starting out in the exciting world of software development, you should spend some time assessing how much your skills are worth.
This is particularly important if you are working as a freelancer because employers are always looking to hire the cheapest app developers. To make matters worse, software development can be such a lonely profession that devs generally get little chance to compare their pay rates with colleagues, and the rise of remote working makes this even more difficult.
There are several key considerations when it comes to identifying your price point. First, you should consider how you are being paid â whether by the hour, by project, or by salary â and how you want to be paid.
Then you should compare your skills to your peers, and the skills that are in demand among leaders in technical fields.
Finally, you should carefully consider the tax implications of your pay.
In this article, weâll look at all these considerations, and help software developers to find the right price point for your skills. Then weâll show you how to increase how much you are paid.
The Raw Numbers
The most basic information you need in order to calculate your pay is the average across the industry. Unfortunately, itâs not as simple as this. Freelancers are paid vastly different rates depending on their level of experience, where they live, and what kind of project they are working on. Add to this the fact that many devs are paid hourly, rather than on an annual salary, and like-for-like comparison across the industry gets even more complicated.
For the sake of argument, however, letâs look at some of the data on the average annual salary for developers. Data from PayScale indicates that there is a large range of annual salaries for software developers with 5 years of experience, ranging from approximately $80,000 a year to more than $150,000. The median figure is $112,921.
When it comes to freelancers, there is even more variation. The cost of hiring freelancers in North America goes from $50 to $250, but the range is significantly lower in Eastern Europe and in India.
This makes calculating the annual salary of freelancers quite complex if looked at on a global scale. For the sake of brevity, then, letâs look at the average freelance rates for developers in the US. Running an analysis on CodementorX shows that most US freelancers charge somewhere between $60-$100 per hour.
How does that compare to developers who are on a salary? According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the average annual hours worked in the US per worker is 1790. Multiplying this number by the average hourly rate gives us a range of $107,400 â $179,000. That means that freelancers â if they are working as much as salaried employees â earn significantly more than permanent staff.
Looking at these raw numbers, however, doesnât give a full picture of the complexity of how â and how much â developers are paid. So letâs look at some extra factors.
How Will You Be Paid?
The next element to consider when setting your price point is how you will be paid. For developers, this generally means one of three things: a retainer, an hourly rate, or being paid per project.
Of these, being paid by the project is the most difficult to assess, so weâll start with this. The problem with being paid by the project, for a lot of developers, is that employers generally have little knowledge about the actual scope of the project they are asking you to work on: thatâs why they are hiring a dev in the first place.
This means that it is critical that you carefully assess the scope of a proposed job, and sketch out any issues that are likely to arise, long before agreeing on an hourly rate.
Some inexperienced developers can be hesitant to do this because they feel that questioning a project spec is going to lose them a lucrative job. In reality, any good employer will be impressed by the preparation youâve put into checking the project scope and see you as more professional than someone who blindly accepted it.
Being paid by the hour also presents difficulties, for many of the same reasons. If a project grows beyond the original design specifications, or if your employer is suddenly faced with a  crisis, your hours can increase dramatically and at short notice.
Whether that is a problem will depend on you, but if you are being paid by the hour it is definitely worth investing in accountancy software to keep track of this. Otherwise, you may find that your employer is tracking your hours differently, or you might end up with an unexpectedly large tax bill (more on this later).
A retainer is the least complicated way to be paid as a developer, and if you work quickly it can be a great option. If you charge an average rate and provide quality work at a faster pace, you could enjoy the benefits of long(er) term project stability with a (maybe) higher than average rate.
Compare Your Skills
The next step in calculating an appropriate rate as a developer is to compare your skills with those of your colleagues, and with the skills that employers are looking for.
Doing a basic version of this process is pretty easy. There are plenty of free tools like this freelance rate explorer that will allow you to compare the hourly rates of over 9,000 developers across different tech stacks, regions, and experience levels. This is a great starting point, but you should also note that in-demand skills can change very rapidly, and the price of developing for emerging technologies â like the IoT â is often not well reflected in these calculators.
Equally important, thanks to the rise of the SaaS business model (which relies on hosting products in the cloud accessed by a web browser rather than massive infrastructures), employers are increasingly valuing developers who are able to swap between many different systems seamlessly and can coordinate with other developers who work for third-party vendors.
There are a few other sets of skills that are in particular demand at the moment (early 2020), and if you have expertise in them it can really boost your rate.
Many device manufacturers are rushing to develop software that can keep up with 5G, and the skills necessary to work with telecom networks are in high demand. Training in the legal and ethical principles of data retention has become a valuable feature for many employers as well. Developers with in-depth knowledge of web application security are also in high demand since over two-thirds of all web apps have high-security vulnerabilities.
Finally, when it comes to calculating your rate you should also recognize that where you are based makes a huge difference. Note that this means you should move somewhere just to get a higher rate â pay rates generally reflect the cost of living in each country â but donât feel it is unfair if you get a lower rate just because you are not in the USA.
Sadly, this is just how things work at the moment: experienced U.S. developers have an asking price at about $60-$100+ per hour at minimum, while non-U.S. developers, depending on where theyâre from, set their hourly rates to about $40-60.
Taxes and Jurisdictions
The final part of your assessment should be the tax you are going to pay on your earnings. How much tax you pay will depend on where you live, of course, but plenty of devs forget to factor this into their hourly quotes until it comes to tax day.
Ideally, you should build a business plan each year, which details how much you expect to earn and the amount of tax you will pay on this. You can then adjust your quotes for projects to take into account the tax you will pay on these earnings.
If you are in the US, itâs worth recognizing that many of the expenses you incur as a freelance software developer â in particular, equipment and any travel you have to do as part of your job â can be written off as a business expense. This can dramatically lower the amount of tax you pay on your earnings, which in turn can lower your quoted rate, which in turn can make you a more competitive prospect when you are bidding for work.

If youâre outside the US, you should also be careful when it comes to working out your taxes. The IRS is notoriously keen when it comes to taxing citizens working with US dollars, and the majority of developers around the world are paid in this currency. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Increasing Your Rates
Finally, letâs look at some key strategies for increasing your pay rate. There are some basic, and fairly obvious, ways to do that. One is to increase your experience and to provide clients with an impressive portfolio of jobs you have completed. Both of these can help you in negotiating a better rate for your time. In addition, however, there are two further strategies you can use to increase your rate of pay.
The first is to be adaptive to what employers want right now. Often, a quick scan of the mainstream tech press is enough to ascertain what the buzzwords of the moment are. In 2020, there are three types of skills that are in particular demand: working with cryptocurrency systems, the ability to code for IoT devices, and at least a basic grasp of AI systems.
The irony here is that many of the companies who say they want their skills are not actually working with these technologies. Instead, they put them in their job adverts because they think they will be in the future. As a developer, this means that a little extra reading (or formal training) in these areas can greatly boost your negotiating clout, and ultimately the amount that you charge for your work.
A second way to boost your hourly rate is to stress that, in addition to your technical skills, you are also experienced in working in the business. A recent article in Recruitment Buzz puts this well: â[Businesses] donât just want good coders. They need good people who can code at the same time as understanding the real-life application of what they are doing. Business-savvy, young, bright developers are very valuable.â
In practice, this means that developers need to start talking the language of business if they are going to go for higher rates of pay. Developers tend to talk about complex issues like scalability, reusability, clarity, calculated risks, and many more. The business primarily speaks in two dialects â time and money.
When negotiating your pay rate, this is a critical realization. Rather than speaking about the technical difficulties of the task your prospective employer is asking you to do, talk about the time and money that it will require. Instead of pointing out that the code they want you to work with is totally obscure, talk about how much extra time it will take you to unravel it.
Donât Give It Away
Ultimately, you should be paid what your skills are worth. However, many developers remain underpaid because they simply donât realize how valuable their skills are to employers. If you are coding every day, it can be easy to forget just how few people have the skills that you have.
For this reason, you should never work for free. If you are just starting out on a development career, it can be tempting to take unpaid internships, or other unpaid work, in order to âbuild up your portfolioâ. This, unfortunately, is something of a foolâs errand. Quality employers will never ask you to work for free, and will always pay you properly for your work.
The three elements above should all be involved in setting your quotes to employers, but you should also not be afraid to vary this as the situation demands. Just make sure that the rest of your personal finances are as carefully thought through as your development rate, and youâll be well on your way to becoming the next Bill Gates.

Being China

When I moved back to the USA, after living in China for almost seventeen months, I was always asked the same questions I wasnât quite ready to answer. A year later, I have finally processed what those seventeen months were all about and have come up with [short] thought-out answers.

I decided to record the repetitive curiosities and document them in my [China] travel journal to really meditate on them. Sometimes itâs better not to talk about something until you yourself have made sense of it and have absorbed those amazing details. Â While there are too many instances in 517 days to cover all, I hope I was able to finally answer your questions in the best way I know how: through writing.

1. What made you decide to go to China?
China chose me. I never expected to do this. I knew I wanted to go to China for fashion because there was a major economic boom at the time. A Chinese friend knew this and started to give me Chinese lessons. She randomly called me one morning, during my last month of class, telling me her friend was starting this company and needed a teacher. She told me to call him and set up an interview because this could be a gateway into the fashion culture. I remember thinking, âEh. Iâll at least go to the interview and see what it is aboutâŠâ, but it was less of an interview and more of a persuasive orientation. I ended up moving to China within a week after I graduated from college. Since then, not only has my outlook on life completely shifted, but also what I want for my own life.

2. Where were you in China?
I was based in a âsmallâ rural city known as Baotou. It is located in the northern province of Inner Mongolia; a little over 400 miles from Beijing. Not many people are aware of this province, let alone the city. It is out in the middle of the Singing Sands desert and holds a population of [only] about 3,000,000 people. Baotou is the home to the largest earth metal industry in the world (Read my epic story on that HERE). This city has many secrets, but what area in China doesnât, really?

Factory stacks behind the high school playground.
On a more relatable level, Baotou is the city thatâs basically set in the story of Mulan. I practically lived on the prancing grounds of Mulan and Mushu [*flips hair*]. Â The end, and oldest part, of The Great Wall, is just outside of Baotou. The Genghis Khan Mausoleum is located in the grasslands of Baotou. Cool stuff.

The most beautiful part of Baotou, though, are the possibilities to visit the famous Singing Sands desert, and also the grasslands. Two completely different environments within a couple hours drive from each other.

3. Why were you there?
Prior to my departure, I was under the impression I would be working with a company, working at a high school that would speak great English⊠that was not the case. I ended up mentoring at a high school with beginners or less level of English. I also briefly helped start up a program at a pre-school. All with the same company. After a few months, I taught strictly at the high school (3,500 students/42 classes of 60-70 students).

As one of the first employees of this new company, I was also expected to help start up the entire business. I acted as the brand ambassador; sitting in meetings, speaking at schools, having lunches with the local government, going to dinner with potential clients, posing for photos at events and so on. We also orchestrated teacher workshops for over three hundred of Baotouâs greatest Chinese-English teachers (that also knew little English). We even hosted summer camps for Chinese high school students. As I continued to learn and grow from the various jobs and situations, it was obvious my position there was more than just a teacher. As a fresh twenty-two-year-old college graduate, I had been a part of building a company, in a foreign country, from the ground up.

I was given the official title of an âEducation Directorâ. I was in charge of developing a curriculum based on American pop culture. I made lesson plans, instructed Chinese English teachers how to teach and most importantly, inspired students of my own (at the high schools and offices).  I taught popular songs, dances, American football, how to make a PB&J, TV shows, movies, inspirational figures and the importance of the American dream⊠it was a blast and ever so fulfilling.

One time I told them we were learning a new word and wrote âsupercalifragilisticexpialidociousâ on the board. Their explanations were hilarious.

I still remember walking into my first class and seeing the excited, yet lifeless faces; walking down the halls, and hearing whispers of my name⊠After a few months of being there, I realized how exhausted and uninspired my students were. These kids spent their youth attending school fifteen hours a day, six-seven days a week. When they finish the class they are expected to complete impossible amounts of homework. American kids donât know how good they have it. Most of my students lived at school because it was easier for their studies.

In China, the âtwoâ means, âYEAH!â
I decided to throw away my lessons and walk into class doing improv. Those were the best memories. The heaviness in the airlifted, and there was a new light in the face of those kids. I motivated them, inspired them, played cruel jokes on them⊠I taught them a new culture. When they were depressed, I told them to keep fighting and to never give up, even when they felt they could not go on. I told them I believed in them, and that I was always there to listen or just give them a hug. That was enough because they are never told these things. In China, there are no mistakes, so I taught them the beauty of being human: we arenât perfect.

They told me my once-a-week, forty-minute class, was what kept them going; it was what excited them about going to school. Leaving was the hardest thing I ever had to do. I remember crying so hard after leaving that school on my last day. Chinese students are taught to hide their feelings, so seeing them cry and saying they donât know how they will go on without me⊠it was gut-wrenching. With me, in my class, they felt free; free to be who they are. I still get messages from students on Chinese social media every day.

The âthank youâs I get still make me wonder how it was me who impacted these kids. To be told, âbecause of you, I believe I can follow my dreams.â or âMy parents want me to be a doctor, but my dream is to be a writer. I never thought I could before, but now I think maybe I canâŠâ. There is nothing like that. Nothing.

4. What was the hardest part of living there?
The cultural differences were difficult at times, but I think it was a lot of fun learning and overcoming the obstacles. I think I speak for myself, and all the foreigners there, when I say how crazy it is how much we Americans take so much for granted. Itâs the little things we learned to cherish.Â
I remember causing a scene when we all saw avocados at the supermarket. Those are foreign to the culture, so seeing them was shocking. People gathered around us as we searched for ripe ones⊠some asked us what they were, some looked disgusted that we picked them up, some just crept around the pears, some thought they were rotten pears⊠A girl asked us what we do with them. We exchanged QQ numbers (Chinese Facebook), and sent her a recipe for guacamole. She later replied that she made it for her and her grandmother and they loved it.

I had a manual washing machine. No dryer because those arenât a thing in China or any country besides the US, really⊠but the manual washing machine was fun times. Imagine filling up a tub of water from your sink, dumping it in your washer, then turning a switch to make it swoosh and spin. Then, emptying the water, putting the clothes in another section, then flipping another switch to make it spin out all the excess water. After that, you just hang them up in your living room to air dry. We lived in the desert so, by the time they were dry, they were already dirty again from the dust and sand that is as lovely as sticky glitter. Iâm not complaining, though. It was an awesome experience.

The most difficult part though was losing two loved ones throughout the time of being there. I had never lost anyone within my family before. Being on the other sides of the world when it happened was really hard. I took the situation as an opportunity to teach my students what my Grandma and Papa both had taught me.
My Grandma was a badass woman. She didnât take any type of negativity from anyone or anything, yet she was so poised, elegant, and loved everyone unconditionally. She was an artist. I told my students about her and told them what she showed me. She may have not even realized it, but she showed me a lot. Then I showed my 3,500 students. Â
My Papa was a true fighter. He served in WW2, overcame cancer, a heart attack, and only God knows what else⊠He always told me to go live âmyâ life and donât stop for anyone else.
A tea stub that reassured me I was doing right here during this difficult time.
While I couldnât be in the States for their funerals, I was able to pass on what they each taught me to my students: always keep fighting. These lessons ended up being the most impactful, and âfightingâ became our mantra.
My students comforted me during these difficult times. I didnât know all of them, but they all knew me. They all cheered me on when I needed them most. The bond between these 3,500 students and me was so powerful. So unreal.

5. Â Did you get the chance to travel around China?
I didnât have as much time as I had expected to have, but I am forever thankful for the fun times I had on planes, trains and automobiles across the country. I had to undergo so many adventures; some stressful, some relaxing, but both overall fun and memorable!

6. Can you elaborate on that?
Whew, ok, well⊠I traveled around Inner Mongolia a lot. Especially when it came to gaining a work Visa. My company had me taking cars to trains, trains to planes, planes to more trains⊠I had to go to the provinceâs capital, Hohhot, to take a plane to Erenhot (the city of dinosaur remains⊠pretty cool. Check it out), and from there a bus to the Mongolian border where we ended up having to take an immediate flight to Beijing; where we had to catch a last-minute flight to Hong Kong. It was a long drawn out adventure. A three-day trip made into a two-week trip we were not prepared for at all⊠it was epic.

Photo shot near the China/Mongolia border in the Gobi desert
I went to the desert a handful of times. Each time was special; each time spent with different groups of people. The most memorable was when a studentâs family invited us to their family reunion.

Imagine spending twelve hours looking at nothing but endless miles of red sand, eating lamb, drinking baijiu (that Chinese floor cleaner moonshine), and riding sand dunes in sleds and dune buggies. I slightly remember sitting in a random shack with eleven shirtless old men, between my American friends, thinking, âHow. the. hell?âŠâ. It was one of those moments when you have an out of body experience and know that that mental picture, of that instance, is going to go down in the books of most epic travel moments ever. I will never forget that day at the desert. There arenât enough stories of that day to express how downright uniquely herculean it was.

One of the times I had off of work, I traveled down the eastern border. It was known as the âbirth-week tripâ because it was my birth-week. With close friends, my brother and I took an overnight train to Beijing. I suggest taking an overnight train in China at least once. Having the experience of staying on a train and sleeping on a flatbed overnight, is a lot more fun than you may think it sounds. From the train station, we got Starbucks. You have to understand that for us, Beijing wasnât a tourist trap, but a chance to get away and have western experiences. From Starbucks, we went straight to The Great Wall of China, where we hiked for a few miles before eating Subway, because, Subway was American and in Baotou, there was no such thing as American.

We made friends with our driver, who ended up taking us around to more local must-sees. Ending in Tiananmen Square, we checked in at New Balance for the first Color Run ever taken place in China. We checked in, then went back to our hotel to soak into the luscious comfy American beds (it was truly a treat because Chinese beds are literally your kitchen table). The next day we took place in the first-ever Color Run, and it was another memory we would all remember for the rest of our human lives. We ended up being on international news⊠finding out when students in Baotou saw us, as well as a family friend in Indiana, United States.

Following Beijing, I took a high-speed train to Shanghai where we felt even more spoiled (Shanghai is a China-based city with extreme Western and European influences). After spending some time in Shanghai, I took a bus to Jiangsu province where I stayed with the family of one of my friends Iâd met in Baotou. Together, we took another bus to a city called, Suzhou, known as the Venice of China. It was a cool experience to see the many different cities because they are each so different. Every province in China is known for something and holds its own special piece of history.

Like Iâd said before, we had to go to Hong Kong for Visa purposes. Iâd lived and studied abroad in Hong Kong before, so returning was super exciting for me. During my time in China, I ended up having to go to Hong Kong twice, spending a total of four weeks there. I was able to see some old friends, visit old stomping grounds, and even met some amazing new friends that shared new adventures with me. Theyâd invited me along to their annual boat trip where I ended up on a yacht in Sai Kung all day. There was a lot of dancing, eating, boat jumping and swimming in the ocean water, that laid between mountains and tropical forests.

I took a lot of day trips to cities around Inner Mongolia as well. One of those cities was Ordos: the largest, most extravagant ghost city in the world. Check out that story, HERE! That city is freakinâ amazing.

7. Did you feel like a stranger there? Was the atmosphere welcoming?
Going to a new place is always strange, and leaving your comfort zone is always uncomfortable. Even more so when it is only you visiting a foreign country youâve never been to before. In this city, Baotou, there was always something freakinâ weird happening. I remember arriving that first night and thinking, âwhat. did. I. doâŠâ, but then woke up the next morning to the excitement of a brand new adventure.

While it was fun, it was also quite frustrating and stressful at times. Being one out of 200 foreigners in a city of over 3,000,000 people, you best believe I stood out. Most of the locals had never seen a foreigner in real life (apart from television). Every time I left the house, people would stop dead in their tracks and just stare in disbelief; jaws open. Others would stare, tap their friends, and continuously point. Getting pointed at had never been more obnoxious; I quickly remembered why I was taught pointing was so rude. Some people would even pull out their phones and take pictures without even trying to hide it. When Iâd catch them, theyâd excitingly wave and giggle. My facial expression at that moment probably resembled an ogre.

Other locals would run up and ask (in Chinese or sometimes broken English) where I was from and why I was in Baotou, then usually ask to take a picture with me. I still wonder how many pictures there are of me floating around Chinese social media. Yikes.

I tried to stay positive and love the celebrity treatment, but most days, I felt very relatable to Britney Spears or Lindsey Lohan⊠It got so annoying knowing I couldnât go on a run, or walk to the supermarket without having my picture taken outside a car window. Somehow theyâd always know we were foreigners. No matter how much weâd try to disguise ourselves.

What kept me going, though, was putting myself in these peopleâs shoes. Theyâd never seen a foreigner. I was the first one. Iâd always try to remember this and keep the situation light. Iâd give them something to look at; something to smile at⊠sometimes Iâd take a picture with them, just to turn the tables.

One day, I just had to laugh, because I was walking as a man was riding by on his scooter⊠He turned his neck so much, I thought itâd break. He crashed into a bush, causing another couple on their bike to wreck because heâd been staring so hard. We both just laughed hysterically, then continued on our day. I had a lot of fun encounters like this with strangers. Many times in the taxi like this one.

This city definitely gave the biggest culture shock Iâd ever had. You go to cities like Beijing or Shanghai and itâs like another country compared to Baotou. I mean, we would go to Beijing or Shanghai for a [slight] western experience. Just when I thought I would get used to the culture there, something would happen, making me feel so small again. I always got over it, though. By the time I left, I had the culture down just like it was my own. Even though Iâd get too much attention at times, everyone was always so welcoming. Everyone wants to be your friend. You would never go hungry; youâd always have an invite to dinner; always have people wanting to help you feel more at home. I experienced so much just through the people; some extraordinary people at that.

8. What did you learn from those people?
A lot. I was a teacher there but between the thousands of students, friends, fellow teachers, the ladies at the supermarket, taxi drivers and just random peers on the streets⊠I learned far more than I could even fathom. Everyone was always so curious about me; wanting to help me in any way possible. The selflessness of these people is something I had never experienced from my own country; from some of the people, Iâve known all my life.  The guy, Zhou, in the [silly] picture above was the only trainer at the gym that spoke English. He taught himself the language. Zhou ended up being my best friend in China and still yells at me for not doing my daily planks.

I learned so much more about how people in other countries live. They live so small and are some of the happiest people on this earth. They donât waste anything. You literally eat every part of the animal and use other parts for other things⊠There is just so much.

There are so many traditions there as well. Tradition is so important to Chinese people; as is family. Family and tradition are sacred, and that is something I wish more Americans would appreciate.

The food they eat is special. There is a special story to these foods; special herbs and spices; special tea⊠I learned how different flower teas help improve health. Chinese are so health-conscious, and it makes sense because they are some of the healthiest people on earth.

9. They eat weird stuff over there, donât they? Did you eat cat? Dog?
I mean, I suppose some things were strange to me because it wasnât what I was accustomed to from American culture⊠just like cheese to them is FREAKINâ WEIRD.  Most of the âweirdâ stuff though wasnât that strange. They donât eat insects or weird things on sticks⊠If youâve seen that in Beijing, then you were part of the touristic ploy. Since many westerners expect to see weird things on sticks, they entertain your expectations. You were fooled.

NO, I DID NOT EAT PETS! Thatâs a very racist and stereotypical assumption. In southern China (just like in the south of the US), that could be possible⊠but you have to remember, China only recently became a second-world country. So many citizens still live in a third-world scenario. Sometimes they have to get what they can eat.

10. What were some of the best and worst foods you tried?
The area I lived in was known for their lamb/sheep. It was amazing. Mouth-watering, addictively amazing. Lamb in hot pot (stew), lamb on a Korean bbq, lamb in dumplings or SHAOMAI⊠itâs all just amazing. Shaomai is a type of dumpling served at breakfast. It is honestly the most amazing thing I have ever had in my mouth. I didnât come across anything too horrid, but I also hold an open mind while traveling (if you donât, then what are you even doing?).

Honestly, though, I didnât know what I was eating half the time; I didnât know if I wanted to know (haha, just kiddingâŠ). The strangest foods I had the opportunity in trying were: an entire rabbit [head and all] roasted on a plate before me, noodles made from A SHARKâS FIN, fish eyeballs, lamb bone marrow sucked straight out of the bone [YUM!], chicken feet, a pig penis, and every part there is to a duck. It was Thanksgiving, China doesnât have turkey, so the next best thing was a Peking duck! Duck meat, duck feet, duck bones (totes edible), duck BRAIN, and every other gizzard, liver, and heart you could imagine. I tried every part as I threw back baijiu, the Chinese moonshine that will probably burn every part of your insides.

Baijiu is necessary at any Chinese gathering or party. Government-teacher lunch in-between classes? Why not. Desert feast? Why not. Birthday party with a bunch of teenagers? Letâs do this because the kid brought a gasoline can full of his fatherâs homemade baijiu as a gift.

People usually always bring bottles of red wine and baijiu. Saying yes to a shot of this floor cleaner is a sign of trust and respect, even if you are going to teach three classes of seventy students after thisâŠ
11. What did you miss out on or wish you had done while you were in China?
I always make sure I never have to ask, nor have to answer, this same question to myself. There is always something more to see and learn everywhere. I am so thankful for what I did experience in China. I am so blessed to have had met the people I did, and have had the experiences I had. Whether it was negative or positive, I learned something. I learned something huge. The only thing is, I wish I could have loved those negative moments within the moment I was living them. I recently came across a Buddhist saying, âEverything in this moment is exactly as it should be. Accept it and enjoy that truth.â. It has helped me remember that what is happening now is authentic. Enjoy that authenticity in life, because itâs real and there is no going back. Each moment is special and each moment is worth living through.

12. What was the most beautiful thing you saw while in China?
Of all the beautiful things I saw, which was many, were the moments I experienced with the people. The positive change in my students, the smiles from the ladies at the supermarket, the odd interactions in taxi cars, the laughs I gave peers at the gym⊠I could go on and on. There was nothing more beautiful than the light I saw in people who had once had no light at all. There was nothing more beautiful than the change in the will to fight after some had completely given up on life itself.

13. Would you go back today if you were given the opportunity?
I will always feel as if a piece of me is missing because that piece is and always will be in Baotou. Not a day goes by where I donât think about those kids, those people, the streets, the ratchet smells⊠I miss it all and will for the rest of my life. That country changed my life and I changed those peoplesâ lives. With that said, I would not go back today. I do plan to go back and visit one day, maybe even live there again, but in this moment there is a differentâ and even more specialâ opportunity waiting for me. A different opportunity to inspire and be inspired by another beautiful country in our very colorful world.
That is my dream⊠to bring something positive to an unfamiliar culture; to learn from that culture, and share it with the world; to share that inspirational experience in order to influence even more countries. I have always seen the world differently; I hope to use that gift in order to live out experiences some people donât care to do, or do not have the opportunity in doing. That way I can bring more love and equality to this world; all in the height of cultural knowledge. Travel isnât about the places you go or the tourist traps you see⊠itâs about the life-altering experiences. It is about the people and the challenges you are able to endure from it. Travel is an opportunity to grow, and Iâve never been one to stop growingâŠ

I without a doubt miss those serious âwtfâ momentsâŠ

I had to move apartments while here; how they packed my things was quite amusing (and stressful).

because, no matter where you are, nap time at noon is necessary.

At the end of the day, no matter who we are or where we come from, just know everyone out there is fighting for something. No matter what it is, each person is battling their own fight.

When my grandmother passed, I told my students that very sentence. I played that music video, âHall of Fameâ by The Script (with Chinese/English subtitles). The silence in the room after the song ended gave me chills. The song became our theme song. We began to cheer each other on by saying âfightingâ. I got a tattoo of âfightingâ in Chinese as a symbol of my time there. I got it for my kids, so they knew I would never forget them or our time together, as they would often say: âplease donât forget usâ.

Gary Boomershine turned a furious real estate lead into a $241,000 profit Part Two
Discover how Gary Boomershine turned a furious real estate lead into a $241,000 profit.
Gary Boomershine founded RealEstateInvestor.com in 2005 out of the need to scale and grow his own real estate investing and home buying business. With a family legacy in the real estate niche, and a long successful career in enterprise and emerging technology markets, Gary saw the vision for RealEstateInvestor.com. He noticed the glaring opportunity to leverage people, processes and technology to gain a leg up in a changing and competitive marketplace. As he worked to develop and use the initial product and service, he saw his real estate business flourish by allowing him to work smarter - not harder and focusing on the one thing that makes money - talking to sellers and making offers. That's when RealEstateInvestor.com began offering its flagship product, REIvault, to the savvy investor market.
According to Gary, âMost small real estate enterprises limit their growth and many times fail because they lack real marketing and sales expertise along with the infrastructure to scale their business. Instead of being able to focus on closing deals and maximizing profits, they hit a wall trying to build and do everything themselves; and they simply can't do it!â
Gary has sent over over 34,000,000 pieces of direct mail in his career, one million outbound calls.
REIvault caters to top producing agents, investors and smaller hedge funds who are looking for a competitive advantage in their local markets. Under the leadership of Gary Boomershine, this service has launched a âtechnology revolutionâ within the real estate niche; offering an alternative to the MLS by bringing pre-screened motivated sellers and buyers face to face at the right time.
Gary currently resides in Northern California with his wife and two daughters where he continues to manage a global team for RealEstateInvestor.com. He is actively involved in real estate investing and private lending. In his free time, he enjoys fly fishing, skiing, hiking, mountain biking and traveling with family.
https://www.jayconner.com/reivault
Gary: "This is a numbers game."
$10 an hour, manage all marketing, trained sales team. Team of 80 people.
Masterminds, one-on-one coaching are crucial for long term success.
You have to go direct to the sellers. Off market.
What's working now:
Direct mail
Cold calling
RVM - Ringless voicemail
60% of phone numbers are cell phones, which means text messaging is huge.
It is almost impossible for a good investor to call all the cold calls needed to make a good living. They need to use a call center that works.
"All Leads Suck!"
The successful investors have this philosophy. You have to talk multiple times with a lead. All leads take time and follow up.
Only 3% of leads close within first first month. 80% of profits come from #7-8 call. But 97% don't call after the second call.
One in 45 leads should produce a close. One third will be partially motivated sellers. 2/3 - not ready yet. 15 make offers on and close one.
The problem: Someone has to do all the phone calls. "Dialing for Dollars".
How often does Gary's team follow up with potential sellers?
1) Follow up. Seller is not ready
2) Not interested leads. Gold - drip campaign. Send out postcard. Send out Voicemail. Call them. Follow up letters.
Referrals from leads.
$241,000 profit deal. Dwight, the fireman, was extremely angry. Gary called. Gary ended up buying both houses. The best leads look unmotivated and impossible to do.
Traffic - Direct mail is important. Proven ROI. $1 spent = $4-5 Scales in most markets. Cold call works because no one is doing it. FB Ads is okay for some. Most older sellers are not on FB. Buy from wholesalers.
Conversion -
Direct mail:
1) List of addresses The invisible list, unique to REI Vault.
2) Copy on postcard
3) Phone team
Skip tracing, or data stacking, for finding phone numbers for targeted addresses. IDI.com is one of the best providers.

2019: The Year We Might (Finally) See Better Blockchain UX?
Ouriel Ohayon is the CEO and co-founder of crypto wallet provider KZen.
The following is an exclusive contribution to CoinDeskâs 2018 Year in Review.Â
Look at the crypto services you regularly use. Admit it: you arenât in love.
Some of them are OK, most of them are terrible â you know it. Iâm not referring to the cosmetic allure of those products, which most of the time feel like pre-dial up era, but about how they work, how the onboarding was presented, how they feel.
This is the current state of UX affairs in blockchain.
However, crypto winter or not, this hasnât stopped the industry from growing so far. A lack of great UX has been obvious, but not a breaking point. The question is whether we have reached a ceiling â where the market needs something dramatically better to grow significantly â in order to extend to new types of users, geographies and use cases that have not yet been covered.
While everyone is eager to see this market crash finally stop and recover, I would argue this just cannot happen until the industry, as a priority, has taken on the importance of delivering a better user experience.
But I have reasons to believe 2019 will be the year we will start to see that happening in a big way.
The legacy burden
To understand why, after nearly a decade, weâre still in the state weâre in regarding UX, we need to understand this industry has been built mostly by engineers and, more lately, by some finance executives. And for those reasons, the priority has not been on UX â it wasnât just inappropriate to expect that but also simply not possible.
The first years were all about infrastructure, protocols and ideas. This approach brought us to the first millions of users adopting bitcoin, ether and other coins â as well as a collective market cap of hundreds of millions of dollars. That, in itself, is a major achievement in an industry that is incredibly conservative and resistant to change.
Most of the contributors of this industry are brilliant thinkers and engineers animated by a mission, a dream and, rarely but sometimes, greed. This industry has attracted a certain type of profile and builders.
There is a reason all those crypto services have similar looking sites, lexicon and identity.
But there are also many constraints that have held back the industry within the limits of what could be designed. To name just the two most important: security and regulation.
It is really hard to get a product to be delightful in usage, fast, easy and, at the same time, extremely secure. Priority should be always about security when it comes to financial assets. Add to that the need to comply with regulations â when they are clear and exist â which will add many friction points in the flow of a service, starting with the painful necessity of KYC and AML.
Not many industries have that degree of lack of clarity and stack of complexities to deal with. It is not surprising that this represents a challenge for builders. Finally, letâs not forget weâre only 10 years into this revolution: many things are still in the making, conventions hardly exist, and common standards and best practices have not been established.
But here is the problem: users are tough judges.
Their attention span, when it comes to new services, is extremely limited, and as some great designer once said, âa great product should be designed for animals, not for humans.â Most users donât care about complexities. They want something that works, is simple to use and feels great. In particular, after been trained for the past two decades to use great products and apps that work fast and are simple to use, the bar most users are used to is high.
And maybe that was good enough for the first users to adopt whatever was around. But we all know that a ceiling has been reached; at DevCon this year, a well-known cryptographer even went so far as to beg the CTO of a well-known hardware wallet for a better user experience.
UX, set, go!
Still, I have good reasons to believe 2019 will see a major shift in how products that are shipped will be executed and presented to users.
Speed:Â In 2019, weâre going to see technologies stack that will enable fast payments, fast settlements and fast(er) on-boarding. Speed is one of the most important elements of good user experience. There is no future for slow technologies: faster chains, faster side chains, faster consensus, faster way to KYC (in particular with portable KYC) will remove a big element of frustration off the table.
Thanks to that, builders will be able to focus on UX layers instead of having to fix things that donât matter to users.
People: People make products. The industry has been attracted one of the rarest set of skills in the industry: product managers and product designers, who I like to think of as the customer advocates within an organization.
They will bring rationality and elegance to an industry that dearly need both. We have seen also in 2018 a much more diverse population flocking in: women, in particular, are better represented and I trust this will bring a new dimension to how products are envisioned, explained and delivered.
Better use cases: Beyond speculation and remittances in weak economies, crypto has not found a use case that compels more users to adopt it. And unless we will go through another major financial crash â which would push crypto as an alternative currency as a major use case â I believe new use cases with very pragmatic approaches will seem more obvious to users.
Even if builders manage to remove most friction points, users need to find an urgent reason to use a crypto service. I believe games, access to ownership (digital ownership like NFTS, or fractional ownership like real estate, art, or commodities), passive revenues enabled by token staking, and loaning will be instrumental.
Better abstraction: No one needs to understand how an IPS or router works in order to build something on the internet or even use the internet. That would be a terrible thing if that was the case.
The crypto industry feels like a giant Lego set without a guide. Developers are building all the pieces and users have to figure it out â hence, the onerous cost learning the industry which requires a lot of understanding at the basic level.
I believe in 2019 enough things will start to be abstracted to builders and users so that they wonât have to understand how thing work in particular in terms of security, private key management, safety, KYC and privacy, desktop to mobile portability.
Mobile first:Â The crypto industry has, until now, been a desktop-first industry. It is inconceivable that this remains so when clearly the most important computing devices are mobile. And this is clearly changing.
Developers are more frequently building for mobile or mobile-first (even mobile only), app stores have better set of rules and protocols to clarify what can be done and protect users from scams, mobile devices and operating system have better-designed security environments and built-in 2FA (even helped by Fortnite).
The timing is right
At this yearâs DevCon â the industry largest event for Dapps and smart contracts â the tickets were paid in fiat, had to be printed on a plastic badge and could not be transferred without a tedious manual procedure.
Even the Ethereum Foundation, which has the resources and developers to develop an alternative solution, is not eating its own dog food. I was shocked this was the case.
A culture shift is required for how organizations think about their services. I donât believe this industry will ever grow to something better and greater until UX has been set as an absolute priority next to security. I believe the time is right for this to happen and that some companies will lead by example, thanks to a new breed of product talent and organizations with pragmatic use cases.
Because, at the end of the day, a great user experience isnât about cosmetics, or even on-boarding and utility. Itâs about providing meaning to people who in search of answers to a problem.

Stacked Macro Photos of Exotic Plants Using the Nikon D850
I recently tested the Nikon D850 with some of the worldâs rare and exotic plants at the world-famous Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens outside Los Angeles.
My passion is creating highly detailed botanical photographic images which show viewers a side of nature they have never seen before. To do that, I use a technique that involves focus stacking, where multiple images, all taken with a different focal point, are layered together to create a composite which is highly detailed and in focus from front to back.
The process is similar to an MRI, where the imaging equipment moves across an object creating slices which are then composited to give a full image. Â
Osteospermum
My journey toward developing my botanical art and this perspective began in the depths of the Amazon, where I was shooting landscapes but found myself captivated by the tiniest of living things on the rainforest floor. Tiny leaf cutter ants and small lizards which changed colors to camouflage themselves were overlooked by our group, and the tiniest of flowers were being stepped upon.Â
I trained my camera on these tiny living things, but I did not have the right equipment to capture these small flowers. On my way back to Los Angeles, I decided I would try to elevate botanical wonders to pop star status so viewers could see the provocative side of nature. Â Early macro photography equipment, namely lenses, could only capture a small depth of field, which is not what I wanted. I wanted to create imagery that rivaled art, where the entire image is in focus. I wanted to give viewers a bees-eye view of nature. Â
Grevillea Moonlight
So, I started experimenting with focus shift photography, at first using a robotic focusing rail called the Stackshot which had just come on the market. These devices control the camera and take a series of photographs as they move in closer to the subject, each image capturing a different area in focus.
Software arrived on the market which could produce similar results by controlling the cameraâs lens, taking a series of photographs at different focal points. The resulting images can then be layered together using specialized focus stacking software. Both processes work well and helped me achieve the results I envisioned. Â But now, Nikon has developed a new way to make this process accessible to the world of photography. The Nikon D850 makes it easy for any photographer to achieve these results natively in the camera. Nikonâs new Focus Shift Shooting technology is easy to use and does not require special hardware or software â nor being tethered to a computer â which makes it easy for photographers out in the field. Â
Paphiopedalum randsii
Nikon USA consigned a D850 camera to me to test the new technology and provide images and honest feedback. When I received the camera, I got the idea to test the camera at one of the worldâs leading botanical gardens, The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, just outside Los Angeles.  The Huntington is set on more than 200 acres and is known for its rare books, manuscript, and art, stretching from the 11th century to the present. But the gardens and plants are the main attraction for me. The Huntington is a visual treat for photographers with a massive collection of rare and exotic plants from around the world.
The team at The Huntington, led by director Jim Folsom, was incredibly gracious and accommodating, providing me with a private room and access to their valuable collection of orchids, ancient bonsai and vast gardens from which they allowed me to select specimens.Â
Protea Goldfinger
I particularly wanted to see how the D850 would capture and display details; that was more important than the artistic side of the work. And with a short time window, I did not expect to leave with images I would add to my portfolio. But when I left, I realized I had been able to do both: Show the detail the D850âs focus shift technology can achieve and capture images of nature which move me â and may move others. Â
The Setup
I created a portable studio onsite at The Huntington. The centerpiece, of course, is the Nikon D850. I modified the camera with a Nikon DK-17M Magnifying Eyepiece which makes it easy for me to see details through the viewfinder. I also use the LCD screen preview and zoom in to ensure sharp focus. I sometimes use the Hoodman H32MB HoodLoupe Glare Free Viewing Loupe Optical Viewfinder for D-SLR 3.2âł LCD Displays to magnify the display. Â
For lighting, I use the Nikon R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System with four or five SB-R200s attached. I diffuse the light with Sto-Fen OM-SBR200SET Omni-Bounce diffusers. To scatter the light even more, I cut up small pieces of thin packing foam and place them inside the diffusers.  The camera is placed on an old Manfrotto 3251 tripod. Unlike the light carbon fiber Gitzo I use in the field, I like this Manfrotto tripod for studio work because it is heavy and doesnât move even slightly when I am shooting a stack â and I canât knock it down in my clumsiness. I also use a Really Right Stuff L-Set bracket for Nikon D850 attached to the camera and a Really Right Stuff plate on the tripod head.  I use a posing table with flat feet (no rolling casters) and place the subjects on the table in a vase. I use Wimberley PP-200 plant clamps to keep the plants steady and to position with precision. I use floral water tubes for single stem cut flowers to keep them hydrated; they can easily be inserted into the Wimberley plant clamps. I use an LED table lamp as a modeling light. I clip the light to a cheap tripod near the posing table to help me focus, and then I shut the light off before shooting.  I set my background several feet back from the posing table. If I am shooting against a white seamless paper or green screen background, I illuminate the backdrop with two Elinchrom Portalite strobes. I do not diffuse or modify the light because it will be diffused by the backdrop and I do not want to waste energy.
Because flowers tend to have translucent areas, I often reduce the background lighting so the flower does not appear faded or washed out. That means I typically have to remove the background for white backgrounds in post-production using Adobe Photoshop. When I shoot against black, I use a piece of velvet fabric with no illumination.Â

 Mounting the Camera
I place my Nikon D850 on my tripod and I am ready to begin. I check the cameraâs battery level to ensure the battery is fully charged. I set the Nikon D850 to Manual Mode with the shutter at 1/60 and aperture at F8 with an ISO of 64 and take a test photo. I disable lens vibration reduction (VR) since I will be shooting on a tripod. Â

Posing the Subject and Focusing
I pose and frame my subject. If exposure looks correct and the framing looks interesting, I focus on the area of the subject nearest to lens. The camera and lens are set to automatic focus, but I manually turn the lens counterclockwise and then slowly turn clockwise until the first areas of the image come into focus.
I will then turn the lens slightly counterclockwise again, effectively focusing in front of the image. I do this because, in many cases, there may be some small element, maybe a flower stamen, that I could have missed. Once everything has been adjusted to my satisfaction, I close the cameraâs viewfinder eyepiece shutter to prevent light entering via the viewfinder and interfering with the exposure. Â

Understanding Focus Shift
Now, comes the easy part â using the Nikon D850âs built-in Focus Shift Shooting menu. Focus shift shooting requires you to set the number of shots you take and the step width between each shot. You want to make sure you take enough shots to cover the distance between the front and back of the subject. You also want to make sure you have enough overlap between each shot so you have complete focal coverage.
To make it easy, Nikon published a few tables online, which I downloaded. Since I am using a standard AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60 mm f/2.8G ED at aperture f/8, I can easily calculate the number of shots I need to take. I decided to set the focus step size at 3 because of the size of my subjects, which are relatively small. Â

Setting up the Focus Shift Menu and Begin Shooting
When you open up the Focus Shift menu, you will see several options to set: Â
Start: This is the last thing you do to initiate shooting after you have set up the parameters in the menu.
No. of shots: You can choose up to 300 shots. A safe bet for my work and camera settings is closer to 50, but for small subjects, it might take 100
Focus step width: This is where you choose the amount the focus distance changes with each shot. The options available range from 1 to 10 with lower values for smaller steps, higher values for larger steps. I chose 3.
Interval until next shot: This is time between shots, in seconds. I selected 00 to take photos at approximately 5 fps, which works with release modes S, CL, CH, and MUP. You can choose 3 fps for release modes Q and QC. If you are using flash and strobes, consider how long it takes for your lighting to refresh.
Exposure smoothing: If On is selected, the camera will adjust the exposure for each new shot to match the immediately preceding shot. I leave this on.
Silent photography: This is important. You can select On to silence the shutter during shooting, but if you are using a flash, the flash will not fire. So I leave this off.
Starting storage folder: I select New Folder to create a new folder for each new focus shift sequence. I want my sequences of images in separate folders.
Then, just select Start and step away from the camera. I make sure there is no movement in the room when I shoot. That means I do not let anyone into the studio, I turn off any ventilation which could move the subject and I try to stay still. Any small amount of disturbance could cause the subject to move, and then the sequence of focused images would be compromised.  After the sequence of images has been photographed, I remove the card from the camera and transfer the images onto my computer using a Sony QXD card reader. I rename the folders with the name of the subject, date, and location. Â
Banksia speciosa
Focus Stacking
Now that you have a stack of images, you can use a focus stacking software package to composite the images into a single, fully focused output image. Nikon made a great decision allowing you to choose how to process your final images. There are a number of good focus stacking software applications on the market, and the one I use is Zerene Stacker.
I simply add the images to Zerene Stacker and allow the software to align and stack the images into a final composite image. As I start the process, I can view each input photograph. In some cases, I may have taken too many shots, in effect photographing beyond the subject. I simply remove these input files and the software will re-align the images and develop the composite.Â

 The Final Verdict
While I was at The Huntington testing the Nikon D850 Focus Shift feature, I created focus stacks in tandem shooting with my traditional method where I tethered the camera to a computer and used Helicon Remote software. The results were nearly indistinguishable to me. So, I decided to write down what I believe to be the pros and cons:  Pros:
Extremely accurate at moving the focal point
Excellent exposure accuracy with Nikon R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System
Great to use out in the field; no need to tether to a computer
No special software needed
Easy to use; easy to understand
 Cons:
Need to estimate how many images you need to take; you may overshoot and waste flash batteries and time
Need to estimate the focus step width, or use or create a table for reference
Requires more steps that tethered shooting with focus shift software: Take photographs, transfer to computer, then stack. When you are tethered, the images are already on the computer.
My final verdict is high praise for Nikon and the Nikon D850. This is an exceptional innovation and the quality of output images appears to match identically to the results I get with a focus shift software package â the exposure accuracy may be better with the D850. And the Nikon D850 provides a unique benefit which makes it an essential tool for anyone who is using focus stacking to create their work: You can shoot untethered in the field, allowing you to create images you could never have achieved this easily before.

Why Marine Muscle is the Best Legal Steroid in the USA for 2018
Steroids are controlled synthetic hormones like Dianabol, Oxymethalone, Trenbolone, and P-var which help build your muscles. People with conditions like anemia, leukemia, and even asthma get prescribed steroids every other day, and they are 100% legal.
However, if you use steroids outside of a physicianâs prescription or recommendation, it becomes an illegal affair and in most cases dangerous. Legal steroids is a blanket term that covers any and many muscle building supplements. It more like googling information instead of just doing a web search.
The Real Legal Steroids
This is a common term online. It is used to refer to anabolic supplements or muscle building that are legal. However. There have been cases where steroids that were sold and coined as legal turned out to be illegal substances. Â
Illegal substances tend to be strong enough to result in adverse reactions. However, the legal steroids are developed as a blend of prohormones, natural vitamins, and herbal boosters that work to copy the effects of illegal anabolic steroids.
Finding the Best Legal Steroids Online
Before you buy anything off the internet, you always have to make sure that the online platform is efficient, safe and you need to keep in mind that getting the best can be difficult.
The good news is, there are as many companies with hardly any reputation selling supplements as there are reputable companies.
What to Look For
Look for companies with:
More than one or two years in business
Look for positive and unpaid testimonials and reviews
Look for websites that are secure. Look for the little green lock on the browser
Look for the supplements that are made in certified labs and are made in cGMP inspected labs
Look for those with based guidance and support
Do Legal Steroids Work?
There is no denying that legal steroids have a bad rep. There are numerous steroids in the brands in the market that have made a living out of scamming people with fancy names, emphasizing benefits and flashy advertising.
They list all the advantages of steroids and then say the product they are selling will do the same without any side effects. They have no scientific research to back up their claims.
The worst bit is that they donât even specify the ingredient in the powder or tablets. This means you have no way of knowing what you are consuming, and you donât even know whether itâs safe or not.
However, there are honest reviews and research that can help you get legal steroids alternatives that will work for you. However, you should be prepared to pay more due to the nature of the industry.
Do You Need Legal Steroids ?
Rock hard bodies are undeniably in the standard of beauty today. Models for magazines and commercials and superhero movie characters have muscular arms and legs and chiseled abs to die for. This is why men go to the gym to get their physiques and check and look like Dwayne Johnson.
These aspirations are understandable and admirable; however, if you have no idea that these men are getting some help from somewhere then you ought to be very naĂŻve. The extra help doesnât rule out how hard to get those bodies.
It apparently takes a lot of time to the gym and consistently eating the right foods to maintain a body like Arnold Schwarzeneggerâs. Depending on the person, the extra help is steroids or a legal alternative.
Most people either take pills, buy steroids or get injections to get ripped as fast as they anticipate. Otherwise, it can be very frustrating to put in so much work only to keep looking like a more toned version of yourself.
Steroids can make you lose a kidney, so for those who are more concerned and highly concerned about their health, they prefer to go for supplements instead. Supplements are what we are referring to as legal alternatives to steroids.
Supplements may sound like a better and even cheaper alternative, but you have to understand that they are not just pilling you pop, and visit the gym whenever you feel like looking to form muscles. While on supplements, you need to put in more extended hours at the gym, consume proteins like your body and life depends on it, and get as much sleep as you can to make sure your muscles recover and heal.
Supplements will give your body a little push to burn fatter, build muscle, and give your body endurance to work out for about times at least five times a week.
How Do You Get Quicker Results?
Letâs face it; it sucks to wait for so long to get the body you have always wished for. The faster, the better. Right? Would you rather spend money on a supplement that will take you forever to see the results? I highly doubt that.
Well, thank goodness, Marine Muscle heard the plight of many men and came up with a thermogenic and anabolic legal alternative to steroids. Thermogenic involves increasing the bodyâs metabolism to burn more fat while anabolic is all about building muscles. Marine muscle is so powerful that nothing else compares to it in the market.
As the name suggests, it has nine supplements that have a marine name that give you a rough idea of how useful and powerful the tablets are. It took Marne Muscle more than ten years to come up with legal alternatives to steroids. They found six active ingredients in their studies that miss on other brands.
