Week #9 - Logo Development (+Brief #7)

This week we were asked to document our process of developing a logo for our beverage brand as a self directed brief/task. I already had in mind the logo which I wanted to use and the meaning behind this logo, yet I still did this task as a way to expand and develop on my ideas. As I wanted my logo to be black to fit in with my minimalistic colour scheme I chose to skip step 7.

The process of developing a logo includes 9 steps:

1. Visual Research (searching type options and making sketches)

2. Live Typography (loading fonts + identifying appropriate options) 

3. Outlined Typography (ready to manipulate – CMD + SHIFT + ‘O’) 

4. Type Manipulation (typographic DNA to use, enhance and modify) 

5. Symbol Exploration (creating marks/symbols – pictorial/abstract)

6. Arrangement (testing spacing/scale and how elements fit/lockup) 

7. Colour Exploration (testing colour palettes and combinations)

8. Refining (adjusting, editing and narrowing down best options) 9. Final Options (2 x options minimum in colour + mono + reversed)

Final Results

This process took quite a long time, as I’m a perfectionist and wanted to get everything right. However, it was so helpful having the different stages clear as separate components, as I knew what I was aiming for and I could see how the logo was developing along the way.

There were a few different options with my logo. I based the illustrations off my preliminary logo sketches, and worked out how to create them in Illustrator. I can across a few problems such as my white text disappearing on a black background, or lining up my text along a path. However, by watching some tutorial videos, I also learnt some new techniques such as creating an inner glow which I used in the sun illustration.

I went with the sun illustration in the end because I felt like it clearly relates to the name of the brand ‘Rise & Shine’. I also chose the ‘Adorn Condensed Sans’ font from Adobe Fonts as it was easy to read and bold, but also has a unique feel to it. I played around with this font too by changing the shapes of repeated letters, so that no letter was the same and looked for hand made.

I’m happy with how my final product turned out.

Above shows the process of adding my little book icon over the two O’s in book. I tried it with various different fonts including 

Arial 

Roboto 

Futura Light

Gill Sans Regular and Bold

Gopher

The idea behind creating the book icon was to convey two people sharing a book and reading it between them so it would demonstrate a sense of community. Which is one of the core principals behind Bookmark - to create a community of readers.

The top 3 logos I experimented with a very light purple colour palette as this was originally the colour scheme I was going to go forward with until I settled on using blue.

Web Portfolio Logo Development

For my name I wanted to try having a symbol of my initials put together. However, I do enjoy a typeface logo especially since it can be more open visually freeing and could fit in with any practice I choose to go into. I really like the outline of the typeface i have done because I think it fits my personality by the width and style of strokes that’s being used. 

I designed different logos based on the career aspirations that I have. For publication I have decided to manipulate a typeface to make it look like ink and make it almost like a letterpress  style through the thick strokes. For branding i thought to go with a stylish font that is minimal and simplistic and has a professional look to it. I added in the line to evoke that if people choose to work with me they will get a high standard service. I am really inclined on the branding logo i came up with, although, i think for a book cover designer I should go for the publication one since it is what I want to do.
