College fits: the desi version

Kurtis

Starting of with the very basic indo-western outfit: Kurtis. Now, you can wear knee length or short-length kurtis, whatever your prefer.

First of all, please, for the love of god, don't go for those cheap chikankari kurtis or those 'kashmiri embroidered' kurtis. It's disrespecting to the real chikankari and kashmiri embroidered work and secondly, its tacky atp.

Go for normal, printed or plain kurtis. I would say thin straps, or cut-sleeves kurtis cause they feel more girlish and more appropriate for college. If you are insecure about your arms then you can go quarter length and full length too. You can buy good and cheap ones from zudio or myntra.

You can pair your kurtis with shorts, jeans or skirts. Your jeans could be linen, wide -legged, cargos, etc. Avoid skinny jeans or ripped jeans.

Personally, I love to wear short kurtis with baggy cargos. I wear boots cause I love that edgy aesthetic. It's OP for me. I live for that fit.

Skirts

Now, if you want to wear those long flowy skirts, you can just pair them with any normal top of your choice. Additonally, you can wear a duppatta as a scarf and go for the whole Ananya from 2 states look.

You can also wear those really big shararas that almost look like skirts. But daily wear dividers/ shararas are a bit hard to find. You would have to get them stitched only.

Nowadays, a lot of of other sort of traditional skirts are also coming. Wrap around skirts, pencil skirts, short skirts, etc. You can find them easily online. Again, pair them with your normal tops.

If you don't like those traditional skirts/ ghagras you can also opt for those trending maxi skirts. Pair them with jhumkas, duppatta and a boho tote bag and you are good to go!

Shirts

Okayyy so printed shirts are my favorite.

You can just wear the shirts with the bottom of your choice. Even with skirts. You saw Katrina Kaif in Fitoor. Take inspiration.

If skirts aren't your thing,I would personally suggest linen pants. Looks amazing.

The other option is ofcourse wearing your shirts as shrugs over your outfits. Avoid buying those full length shrugs and wearing them over jeans and top. It doesn't look elegant.

Random

Pathani kurtas on women>> Yes, I mean those short linen material kurtas that men wear. Feels androgynous and I love them alot.

If you have some pretty duppattas and scarfs, you can wear them as tops.

You can also wear those patiala pants like geet from jab we met. They are really comfortable and I feel not as normalized in your indo-western style too. So you can have your own unique style by experimenting with them. You can buy the plain color patiala pants and pair it with cute fitted strappy tops. Complete the look with punjabi jootis.

You can also just wear duppattas over your normal western outfits too. Maybe or maybe not add jhumkas according to the outfit. Add a totebag and voila! the simplest indo-western outfit out there.

Vests! I live for vests. Vests add color to my outfit in the simplest way possible. it's chic, it's elegant and ots perfect for when you have interviews or jury if you wear them the right way.

There are endless possibilites with the indo-western look. It's all upto you- how much you want to experiment. Some of my friends in Nift even wear sarees in indo-western look and go to college wearing that. So, ultimately it's all upto you.

Accessories

I feel like accessories totally determine your look. If you want it to be more party wear types or minimalist- it all depends on the accessories. They totally carry your look.

For the normal days, you can add on chudiyas. Can go for siilver ones, but if you want it to be a bit more dressy, you can buy matching chudiyas.

Accessories matching your outfit>>>> Even if you are wearing silver jwellery, try to match the rest of the things with your outfit. Rubberbands, hair clip, bangles, your shoes, your bag, etc.

Wear jootis when you go indo-western.

I feel like the key for accessories is to not overdo it. Keep it simple. The best part about our desi style is we have a lot of ways to dress up- bindis to payals. For your college fits, you can just go for bindis matching your outfit or the black one, jhumkas and bangles. finish it with a totebag.

When your shoes are visible with an outfit, you can do this. I like to wear boots alot. So, whenever I wear dresses and my boots are visible, I wear payals over them. It looks really cool. 10/10

if you are really into the aesthetic and want to play around, you can also try wearing scarfs as hairbands, silver necklaces as headbands, use earrings as hair ties.

kiran this is my uhh fourth? year of promising to sew myself a livable summer wardrobe pls pray with me that it’ll be my first year of Actually doing it <3 and also, as always... what are your fave summer patterns?

omg you can do it i believe in you!! i always find that the most difficult part is getting started, once you get into the groove of it and sewing things it becomes addictive to just keep popping out garments, it always happens to me i'll go months without touching my sewing machine and then i'll sit down to sew a pair of pants or a shirt and a few days later i've sewn 5 whole new garments and i don't even know how i got there lmfao.

my summer patterns are probably different than most because i can't wear shorts or short sleeved clothing outside in the heat or my skin explodes, but i have a set of patterns that i make in lightweight linen or cotton and even though they're long pants and long sleeves they're soooo comfortable even on the hottest days. i also run hot year round so i wear these in winter too just with extra layers lol

- the fremantle pants and the cornell shirt from elbe textiles. i think i've made the fremantle pants 6 times now and while i change a few things about the construction process to suit my preference (i prefer a different method for attaching the waistband) they're literally my favourite pants ever. cornell shirt is also fantastic, i like view 1 which has a button placket that goes halfway down the shirt but not fully. i like to sew it using lightweight cotton esp fabric i've gotten from india and that combo makes it function like a short modern kurti/traditional desi shirt pattern for me and i love it

- all well cardigan coat by all well workshop. the hacking guide for this is awesome, i've made several different versions of this coat in midweight linens and cottons and they are the perfect method of protecting my arms from the sun if i want to wear a short sleeved shirt that day as well as for layering, and i always make them long with huge pockets so they're so functional and comfy

- harper tunic by elizabeth suzann studio. another shirt i've made several times to the extent that i use this pattern as a base whenever i want to make a new shirt. i made the hem straight instead of asymmetrical and i removed the pocket, and shortened the length of the tunic and it makes an awesome basic woven tee pattern for me. i can whip out a hacked shirt in this pattern in like 4 hours, highly recommend

- cap sleeve shirt from the assembly line. this is a new-to-me pattern that i'm currently using for the first time to make a shirt, and its great. similar basic silhouette as the harper tunic but it has a button placket and standing straight collar so i like having that built into the pattern.

- morocco pants from the fabrics store. awesome simple pants that are very comfy, but they work extremely well when cut into shorts. i can't wear shorts outside during the day but i still like to wear them at home/inside in the summer esp for sleeping, and i always use my hacked version of this pattern for that. so simple, so perfect.

Sunday Records, 2022.

It’s early June and I’m in the middle of eleven days off from work. I cannot tell you how stunning these last few weeks have been for me. For the first time in a long time I’ve been feeling great about many things. I have been at the top of my game. Relaxed, tranquil, and level like never before. I went to Sacred Bones’ 15th Anniversary and experienced a feeling like no other. I’ve met a few friends from the alternative-music circle whom I haven’t seen in years. I’ve been tasked to do an amazing amount of summer radio shows at WUSB. The Roman goth girl who’ve I’ve been in contact with since February taught me to face my fears, to not be afraid of bad news, and see the greatest, truest value in people. It’s not even halfway to June and I feel something great is yet to happen.

I’ve been spending money on music without worry. It’s a winner-take-all tour of Long Island’s record stores and at this point I’ve hit up three so far with astonishing results. Sunday Records would be my fourth on the list to visit and it had to be. It’s my only Sunday off in the foreseeable future and, still true to its name, only opens on that one day. I didn’t have a choice, did I? It took me only 30 minutes to get there and closing time was 5PM. It’s 2PM as I walked through those doors so I had three hours to Autobahn it through the entire store. No shelf or rack was left unsifted by me.

The layout of Sunday Records hasn’t changed one bit. Nothing’s re-arranged. Upper wall racks of 7” singles and 45’s hovered above the 12” vinyl bins. There was a maze of LP’s front to back, side to side, and in the middle. What also hasn’t changed was the owner’s system of classifying records unique to the store. If not a genre, it’s chart position, week, and radio station. Brian (the owner) was obsessive to detail and nostalgic like that. Then again, so am I.

There’s a section on the front left side of the entrance. It’s where the electronic, dusty classics, and un-priced arrivals sections were. Less than .01% of its stock was electronic and I sure wasn’t going to waste time sifting through Fifties and Sixties jazz greats. I just knew. I turn to my right and there were plenty of funk, groove, and R&B LP’s and 12” singled there. I looked under the bins and there were boxes of records not priced out. That’s where I found various hip-hop and rap singles, uncharacteristic for a store that specialized in vintage jazz, Seventies radio rock, and everything Eighties. It was all fair game and I took what I could. Unstickered singles by Black Moon, Big Daddy Kane, Kurtis Blow, Jeru The Damaja, Fu-Schnickens, Double XX Posse, and an early pre-fame DMX e.p. (“Born Loser”). I knew Brian wasn’t the type who was into West Coast jams or boombox anthems and made me think why he took them in the first place. No matter. It was a lucky out for someone like me to easily stock up on hip-hop and rap vinyl.

Now the 45’s. Sunday Records was always good with pricing them on the cheap. What I purchased in 7” singles from West Babylon’s Looney Tunes, I tripled that here. These 7” singles of Eighties hits from my Atari / Nintendo childhood meant not having to purchase full albums for one or two songs. Why not acquire them? Plenty of synth-pop, new wave, and pop rock. One 7” I might have passed up the last time around was Re-Flex’ “The Politics Of Dancing”. The single that gave me these Sunday vibes was finally in my hands. This visit’s surprises? Gary Numan’s “I Die: You Die” b/w “Down In The Park” and Killing Joke’s “Adorations” for $4.00. Then I came across The Normal’s “T.V. OD” b/w “Warm Leatherette” The good news was that I discovered it. The bad news? It was a $14.00 hit…and without an original artwork sleeve. The price you pay to take home synthpop history.

When that was over, I took a deep breathe and dove into all the vinyl inventory. The great thing about Brian was that almost nothing was out of place. He’s incredibly meticulous in that everything was in alphabetical order and with almost nothing in the wrong bin. Also with Looney Tunes, a good amount of records were alphabetized or sorted by artist, allowing me to fly right over large chunks of sections and straight to the others. What wasn’t hip-hop / rap and categorized by chart position, week, and radio station ended up on the lesser expensive side. Like the 45’s, I sped through furiously through the LP bins and acquired a lot of hits from my childhood. A recent discovery now in my hands? Captain Sensible’s “Wot” for $5.00.

And what I made up in value, I would lose later with some essential finds. That’s even avoiding the new vinyl section. Towards the end of searching was where it started to hurt. The least of my worries? The Cars’ Panorama for $8.00. The Shirts’ debut and Anti-Nowhere League’s The Perfect Crime for $9.00 each. But that’s not all. I found essentials in The Young Gods and Pere Ubu where it stopped at the $10.00.

Now the heavy stuff. No one remembers or know who The Innocent was. The Roman goth girl I mentioned earlier? She’s insanely obsessed with Tent Reznor. While doing a Nine Inch Nails run, I learned he was part of said band right after leaving Option 30. The Innocent’s only album was found in one of the bins and I grabbed it for $14.00. Had I not known about them, I would’ve zipped past it without even knowing. One album I passed up during my last record-store tour was Cabaret Voltaire’s The Crackdown. I found it twice in unopened condition for $20.00 at several stores and gave it up at least twice, thinking I could l buy it for less. Well, four years later I was right on that one. I finally found it again and for $14.00 opened I wasn’t going to pass it up a second time. While there, Sunday Records still maintained a good selection of other industrial and related releases. They had more Cabaret Voltaire records including The Pressure Company (!) and even the new ones (Shadow Of Fear and Dekadrone) which I was impressed that Brian carried. Front 242 e.p.’s were also in the bins and several Ministry records starting with Work For Love (the overseas pressing of With Sympathy), some Twitch-era singles, and all the way up to Psalm 69.

Here comes another unexpected hit in the kneecaps: Kraftwerk’s The Man-Machine for $20.00. Any time I buy Kraftwerk on vinyl I pay that price; nothing less. That’s how much I paid for a used copy of Radio-Aktivitat at a record fair held in Amityville’s veteran hall. Again, take no chances. Finally, a record that I hoped to find in the wild because it was so good: The Raveonettes’ Pe’ahi; $20.00 asking price. Decisions had to be made but not necessarily now. I held on to it for the time being, having to decide to take it now or pass it up and find it again somewhere else for less. Looks like I will take my chances.

It’s not an understatement when I say this, but 99.99% of Sunday’s stock was all vinyl. The other .01% were used cassettes and CDs placed right near its listening station at the front-right of the entrance. I passed it all up as nothing there interested me. So far, Sunday- is the only store where it was all vinyl.

Ten minutes to closing. It’s about time to make some decisions. Brian greeted me and started counting everything up. Of the 75 I had in my arms, I gave five back to him including the Raveonettes album. He was amazed. He tried selling it back to me because he also knew it was a great album. Oh, I agreed. But as I told each and every one of you, I held off just in case. His laptop lost its’ juice so there was no easy way for him to add it all up and keep track of what he sold me. He ended up taking photos of everything I bought and took him about a good fifteen minutes to calculate it all. Then I gave in. I’d take the Raveonettes’ album after all. Take no chances, right?

“You should come here more often!” he told me in an exasperated manner. “Really?” I laughed. It’s not every year that I do this, Brian. I’d try real hard to keep up if I did. Now I knew why he said that.

“That’ll come to $348.00”. Yikes. That was at least triple of what I spent at my last visit here. I was sweating like Rodney Dangerfield on his worst night. (Plot twist: he never had one.) Despite Brian giving me all the hip-hop records for $20.00, the other records made up for it. No coupons, either. But, I had all the confidence in the suburbs to spend with no worry. The stack was so hefty that Brian got me a box from the back to hold all the 12” records in and bagged all of my 45’s so that they wouldn’t slip out of position. I was relieved in the end to nail that Sunday like I wanted to. But the day wasn’t over yet.

After I thanked Brian for everything, I loaded my purchase in the trunk. I had plans on seeing Candy, a Jewish ginger whom I haven’t seen since we left Brentwood. She has a family-owned restaurant out in Calverton and I promised I’d visit the next time I was nearby. I went west on Route 25 and started the peaceful, sunny journey to her eatery. It’s not every day I’m out in Riverhead or Calverton. I took all the time in the world driving through the scenic route of vast farmland and sparse local businesses along the long, quiet roads; ready to catch up with her and walk down a beautiful but bittersweet and tattered memory lane.

The washroom reeks of grimy flesh and compost. It looks like the type of place you would see in you would see in a stereotypical haunted house horror film.

He ripped off his now-really-tight clothes. He looked in the mirror and saw a really hot man in a mask… shirtless right in front him.

He groaned in pain as scars formed on his body. Scars that were so familiar to him. from those time where he was tortured?

After the scar was fully formed, his eyes darted to the mirror, the sight of his hot body that had been formed when he began to put on the mask. The body in which he had for a few minutes after it fully formed started to feel…familiar to him.

His hand reaches to his right pec, it’s…bigger than he thought. The soldier gave it a squeeze…arousal surges through his new body. “Oooh~ Fucking hell~,” he moans under his breath. “My- my voice…,” it was really deep, and is it… British?

Chapter 1

The woman at the head of the table was adjusting the pleats on her saree, and when she was done, she cleared her throat and drew the attention of her family.

"Before beginning our breakfast, I want to make sure all the preparations have been done for the ball," She said.

"Yes, Amma." answered Pushkar. He sat to her left and his wife Revathy was next to him, perking up at the mention of the ball, she loved parties more like she thrived on them, and probably she could die in one if she had a choice. Sadly, her misaligned priorities sometimes hindered her in parenthood. Not that she didn't love her hyperactive kids, she did, but she could be so unwitting at times, that she would be blind to her kids' needs, this has been one of the few factors for petty squabbles that ensues between her and Pushkar. The two seats next to her remain empty, usually occupied by her twins. The little tots were not the only missing but their Grandpa as well, so his seat opposite Revathy remain untouched. The other seats were filled by two sets of uncles and aunts. Who were just waiting for their moment to speak, but considering how Latha was they'd rather stuff their mouths with delicacies set on the table.

"Did you invite Iyers, their presence is impo-- where is Akanksha?" Latha began imposingly as usual but her question ended in confusion; eyes searching hastily for her daughter. She looked at her son, raising her thick brows in question.

"Um..." Pushkar tried to answer but she stopped him.

"Jaya, ask her to come, now."

"Yes, Amma" said the servant.

Latha was an imperious woman, she demanded everyone's attention as soon as she stepped into a room, such was her tenor. "I don't like this indiscipline," she clicked her tongue; the indignation on her face was so evident. She was scowling at her cutlery when she heard fading footsteps near the stairs, and as her daughter-shaped figure ambled near her view, her scowl deepened.

She took a good look at her daughter, dressed in a mid-length beige Kurti with handwoven golden embroidery running down her neckline and her sleeve cuffs, matching perfectly with her amber-gold cotton silk pants. Akanksha's dark brown hair was parted in middle but gleaned together in a bun at the back, yet few had escaped, now curling around her temple, her black bindi rivaled the mole sitting right at the smiling line of her left cheek. Her golden bangles chimed as she took a seat right to her mother.

When the savory whiff of sambar and the sight of fluffy idlies beckoned to her, she couldn't resist, moreover her stomach was making weird noises of someone starved for eons. She started serving herself when she heard her mother clear her throat. "Do you want it?" She held a piece of idli to her mother, her mother shook her head in disapproval. Akanksha just shrugged--- she was nonchalant about her mother's attitude and so she continued having. Apparently, she was the only one who could stand on her toes with her amma.

"You can continue," She said to her mother.

"I cannot comprehend how dense can you be," her mother exclaimed.

Akanksha paid no mind to it, Latha stared at her for some more time--- going over ways to subdue her daughter, she huffed in annoyance before smoothly transitioning into her placid poise.

"As I was saying, Iyers are important and also some other thing I wanted to say," Latha voiced and the silence that followed was quite extended, a bit too long that even Akanksha's interest piqued, not much, but she lent her ear, anyway.

"I want to invite the Kamats." Akanksha stopped having, piping hot sambar burned her throat as she took a big gulp and her spoon fell on the plate with a loud clank. "What?" She said before adding, "Are you serious? Why them?" She glanced at her brother, trying to understand if he was involved in this utter-ridiculous decision but by the clueless look on his face, she knew not. She looked back at her mother, whose serene face faltered for a moment, the hatred for the family was monumental, it snaked with its bitter venom in all of them, and yet here they were, inviting their foes with gilded smiles.

"The decision is already made, it is not up for debate" She quieted the jabbering room. She motioned for them to start with their tiffin, before looking at Akanksha with a tinge of malice in her eyes and a mocking smile, she said, "You'll be the one hosting"

Kesar was tapping to the radio's rhythm on his thin steering wheel, the little pitter-patter on the window pane was blending perfectly with the music streaming into the car. "Should we stop at the tea stall? The weather is good to have a cup, don't you think?" he took a glance at his friend and furrowed his brows.

Akanksha was fiddling with her pearl necklet. Her ears were red and itchy, but she wouldn't give in, she didn't want to feed her nervous habits but her brain was fast in its functioning; sending a stimulus and her hands were quick enough to catch those brain signals and there she was scratching at it, but it yielded no satisfaction whatsoever. Looking at her Kesar was concerned as to what is going on with his good friend.

"What is it?"

"Nothing"

He stared at her for a few moments, "You can tell me"

"Amma has put me in a funny situation" She laughed wryly. She went quiet after that and Kesar hummed for her response, he wanted to prod her into telling him what is bothering her but he knew otherwise.

"Well, how about we have some coffee?"

"Yeah, that would be great" She looked out the window losing herself in the pitter patter of the rain against the car window.

For Akanksha, the room was too crowded, but she had to push through it, she greeted a few people on her way, it wouldn't hurt to be polite sometimes. When she made up her mind and settled down at her seating bench, she was overcome with a gnawing feeling of absence, of something familiar yet strange. Her nails traced the doodles etched on the wooden slab and her eyes picked up the vagueness of her thoughts and began searching for that familiarity, and soon they found their way to the lean figure sitting against the column of the banyan tree, the breeze blew through the dark brown tresses and flipped the pages of the book too hastily; the person was struggling to manage between untangling and reading. Before she could see more of it, the curtain was drawn between her and the view. She could hear a distant thank you, and when she pulled herself from her hazed thoughts, the class had already begun.

The lecture was halfway through when there was a knock on the door, and her curly letters came to a halt; the class got mute for a beat before the yammering noises swelled the space. The door was opened to a woman costumed in a burgundy cable-knit sweater and pleated dress pants; her sleeves pulled back to her elbows showed off the gold bracelets and square-dialed watch, and her brown ankle boots were squeaky clean. The image of the woman seemed to have slowly seeped into her mind and when recognition hit her, instantly her gut recoiled with discontent.

After deftly convincing the professor to let her in, Prithvi walked into the classroom. While she made herself comfortable in her seat, she sensed someone watching her and when she turned around she caught a pair of Hazel eyes glaring at her, she couldn't help but smirk at Akanksha. And Akanksha sneered at her. Prithvi laughed it off and started taking notes. When the class was over, Akanksha and Prithvi were the only ones to leave at last. Prithvi made hurried notes, packed her case, and took quick steps toward the door. Meanwhile, Akanksha took all this in and just stared at the other girl's departure, a million thoughts running amuck in her mind. She was still thinking through, the act of inviting Prithvi would be so embarrassing and at the same time infuriating. What made her mother invite their family? What had changed? Guess she would never know, or would she?

They were all in the canteen. Most of them had their tiffin carriers opened on their tables and they all ate up their pieces of the meal and shared with their friends here and there, tasting different spices from all the families. Among them, Akanksha sat at her table along with her gang. Kesar was at the canteen counter to fill up his plate of parotta and sabzi, and Padma was mindlessly gazing through the newspaper, bored with the lack of gossip but the article about the exotic perfume caught her attention so her eyes were soaking it up. Shashi, Akanksha's cousin was nowhere to be seen.

"Looks like Shashi is cozying up with the enemy," said Venky. All the friends at the table immediately looked at Akanksha, letting out various sounds of oohs and aahs. They all wanted to see what she would do. And she remained stoic. She was super irritated that's for sure, but she didn't want that anyone to see that she was even bothered by this silly stunt by her stupid cousin. Shashi arrived all smiles at their table and Padma who was now caught up with the scene so far, asked her, "What were you doing with her?" Shashi replied, "Why, of course inviting her to my family ball" Akanksha's wits were off the charts just listening to her cousin but she was unflinching about maintaining her teetering patience for some reason. "Who told you to do that?"

"No one, I wanted to invite her, so I did"

"I am the one who is in charge here, without asking me, how could you invite her?"

"My dad said I could invite whoever I wanted to, and I have heard your mom has okayed inviting the Kamats so I thought, it wouldn't do any harm,"

Akanksha wanted to say so many things but controlled herself. "Well you thought wrong, you cannot invite people without going through me first, I hope that's clear to you, next time use that head of yours for something other than flirting" Shashi's cheeks got red in embarrassment and Akanksha was breathing rapidly, she urgently needed to get out of here. She opened the door of her blue 1950 Buick Road Master, she felt somewhat relieved that she was back to her space, her head leaning back on the car seat, the agitation in her was calming when she heard a knock on her window. Prithvi was there. She motioned to roll down the windows. Why doesn't this end? Thought Akanksha, she rolled her eyes, and complied. "You shouldn't have made such a scene there Princess"

"Mind your own business"

"I would've, if it wasn't about me"

"Whatever you want to preach, do it fast, I am getting late,"

"Your mother should also teach you more about how to be selfless,"

"Excuse me, I forgot for a second, with whom I am talking, it must run in your blood to humiliate others"
