I know you asked about shows, but I'm doing some movies as well because I've been thinking about genre history lately. A year on Mars is about 687 Earth days (or ~668 sols, martian days), and starts at the northern vernal equinox.

The passage of a year on Mars is measured not using dates but using solar longitude, basically a degree measure of how far Mars has gone in its orbit, so the vernal equinox has a solar longitude of 0°, and the year progresses through 360°.

The year numbering convention was proposed in a 2000 paper and is pretty widely used by planetary scientists now. It takes Mars Year 1 as the year starting on the Earth date 11 April 1955.

LONDON -- Michael Gambon, the Irish actor who played Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, has died at 82.

"We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon," a statement from his family said. "Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love."

Born in Dublin on Oct. 19, 1940, Gambon made both his film and stage debuts in 1962 and 1965 productions, respectively, of William Shakespeare's "Othello." He was among the first ensemble of actors to join the Royal National Theatre in London, alongside the likes of Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith and Michael Redgrave, to name a few. In 1998, he received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth.

He would go on to star in films like 2001's "Gosford Park" and 2010's "The King's Speech," both of which earned him Screen Actors Guild Awards for best cast in a motion picture.

Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, beginning with the third "Harry Potter" film following the death of Richard Harris in 2002. Harris played Dumbledore for the first two films and Gambon played him for the remaining six in the series.

On the small screen, Gambon won four British Academy Television Awards for best actor. He won for "The Singing Detective" in 1987, "Wives and Daughters" in 2000, "Longitude" in 2001 and "Perfect Strangers" in 2002. 'From Sherlock’s Moriarty to His Dark Materials’ Colonel John Parry; Hamlet to the one-man adaptation of Vanya, Andrew Scott has been a longtime beloved actor of the stage and screen. And now the Dubliner will be taking on another iconic role as he steps into the shoes of Tom Ripley for the upcoming limited series, Ripley. The series, which is based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling novels, is set in 1960s New York — and follows Tom Ripley, a grifter who is hired by a wealthy man to go to Italy and try to talk his vagabond son into coming home.

But as Ripley takes the job, he falls headfirst into a life of deceit, fraud and murder.

The cast includes Dakota Fanning, Johnny Flynn, Eliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy, John Malkovich, Kenneth Lonergan and Ann Cusack.

All eight episodes — which were directed and written by Steven Zaillian — will land on the streaming service on April 4.

The Dubliner told Empire about taking on the role — and the importance of putting “your own stamp” on the character.

He said, “you have to be respectful, but not too reverent, because otherwise there’s no point in doing this.

“You’ve got to put your own stamp on it. Some people will like this version, and some people will like other versions, and that’s okay. What you have to do is understand why this character remains so fascinating for people.”

In the mid-200s BCE Eratosthenes invented the device of lines of longitude and latitude. The Alexandria meridian held a central place in his Geography, an account of the geography of the known world.

Key locations on the meridian: Olbia (Ukraine), Lysimacheia (Türkiye), Rhodes (Greece), Alexandria (Egypt), Syene (Egypt), Meroë (Sudan).

Ancient geographers were aware that their meridians weren't perfectly straight. But measuring longitude was a difficult problem, and it wasn't properly solved until the 1700s.

Eratosthenes went on to use published reports of gnomon readings from three of these locations, and a traditional measure of the length of Egypt, to determine the earth's polar circumference. His result was 250,000 stadia -- ca. 46,220 km, plus or minus 2000 km (the stadion isn't a very precise measure). The true figure is 40,008 km.

Hi! Your POV on BL is so refreshing! BL are TV shows for people to enjoy! With different genres and stories and different productions. But so many people just BASH certain shows like they are Sakura offending SasuNaru fans in 2000's fanfic. I really liked KP, and Cutie Pie and now Love In The Air and Vice Versa. They are nice shows, fun shows and yet people complain and complain about their "problematicness". It's annoying af! BL doesn't have to be high art of pure pureness. It's ENTERTAINMENT!

THIS. no media will have everything well put and perfect and healthy and stuff because media delivers what people want and desire and many love watching dubcons and stuff which may be labelled problematic by some. I hate when people try to act like they have high morals and can't distinguish fiction from reality. So many shows have healthy couples and characters watch those if you feel uncomfortable. I am actually surprised how people automatically assume the dynamics you enjoy in fiction is EXACTLY always what you want in reality. We can just sit and enjoy instead of complaining about every frame. Fandom culture is sometimes so toxic that you feel the need to defend your likings to everyone as if people don't have preferences. Every show has it's own genre, like kinnporse is so different than not me which is so different than love mechanics which is going to be so different than 180° longitude passes through us, etc. It's frustrating to see people complain about bad writing and shit while they have never written scripts like shut up. Your opinions matter but always need not to be included. Just try to ignore people and enjoy your media anon<3

Constructing Eccentric Calendar for Back Plate of the Astrolabe

An eccentric calendar assumes the sun moves at a constant speed throughout the year and accounts for the Sun's true anomaly as an offset from the Vernal Equinox. Due to both longitude and the year since 2000, the center of the calendar will be placed at an offset from the center of the back plate of the astrolabe on the line of apsides (the line connecting the perihelion and aphelion)

The vernal equinox starts at 0° with Aries so the outer Zodaic calendar splits up every 30°. The Gregorian calendar (January-December) starts at an unknown angle from that 0° vernal equinox

The angular distance between the start of January and the vernal equinox is related to longitude

The offset from the center of the plate depends on the perihelion (the time when the Earth is the closest the Sun) which depends on the year since 2000

I wrote some code based on Morrison’s book that will generate both the angular distance from the Vernal Equinox to the January 0 (midnight of December 31) at the beginning of the year as well as the offset (x, y) from the center of the back plate

All you need is your year, your longitude, and a radius for the plate

For the Year 2022 at longitude -105.2705° for a plate with a radius of 1

Perihelion = 103.315666°

Aphelion = 283.315666°

Mean Anomaly of Jan 0 = 357.320158°

Line of Apside relative to Vernal Equinox for Longitude -105.2705° = -79.65258771051492°

X offset with radius of 1 = -0.007679

Y offset with radius of 1 = 0.032445
