The Boys Who Suffered

The big thing about The Knowing is The Suffering. There is a melancholy that seeps into you and makes you think you aren't enough. These characters are hard to watch. I know you asked about shows, but I'm doing some movies as well because I've been thinking about genre history lately. For this it's about whether or not the quiet sadness in me connected to the quiet sadness I perceived in a character in this show.

Moonlight (2016)

He is the saddest boy in my heart. This is the moment that breaks him forever.

Jamal, Syed, and Anthony have suffered for being who they are, and they are hurting. They cling to each other and it's often too hard.

What had started out as just a few, collected lovingly in his binder, became a cacophony of little bits of colorful paper. 

“The resemblance was uncanny,” Steve said when they broke for lunch, handing him a little guitar playing raccoon. 

“Don’t get too smug. Robin has a bigger one,” Steve said when the kids all paused for bathroom breaks, putting a neon orange circle on Eddie’s shirt that said You’re The Best!

“This made me think of you,” Steve whispered when the kids were arguing over strategy, sliding a sticker still on the backing towards Eddie. A little fox in a balaclava and a striped shirt with a bag full of pink and red hearts.

“Thanks,” Eddie said shyly each time, waiting for Steve to turn around so he could stick it inside his binder. 

Each one of them became a little beacon of hope. A drop in a bucket ready to overflow.

6. Coming of Age

Is anyone doing it like I Told Sunset About You? The show takes place in the midst of a huge set of transitions in these boys' lives and is about them dealing with their childhood relationship and adolescent romance. There are few shows that can compare to the work BKPP, Boss, and friends put into this. I still can't believe this exists and people have adamantly refused to watch it. Couldn't be me.

12. Forced Proximity

I feel like this has to go to the Philippines with how well they tackled the pandemic. I'm giving it to Stuck On You because those two were only together for some quick, anonymous sex and it turned into a lot for both of them. This is the same team that also did Quaranthings, but I think I like the way they handled the sudden cohabitation in Stuck On You better. These guys were not expecting to get stuck together and it is not an easy transition.

The two weeks of quarantine they spent together clearly changed their lives. It's a standout example of this trope.
