Loretta Notareschi - String Quartet OCD, performed by Playground Ensemble
Loretta Notareschi’s String Quartet OCD sketches the emotional landscape of the composer’s experience with postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder in the year following her daughter’s birth.
Postpartum OCD, which affects approximately 3 to 5% of mothers, is characterized by intense fear and anxiety, in response to which mothers develop repetitive coping behaviors.
The first movement of String Quartet OCD, “Intruders,” portrays the intrusive thoughts (obsessions) of the disease in all their suddenness and violence.
The second movement, “You Must Think I’m Made of Candy Glass,” explores the many forms the composer’s compulsions took, including verbal and musical patterns that she required herself to repeat in her mind.
The third movement, “Shame,” expresses the grief and despair she felt.
Finally, the fourth movement, “A Second Delivery,” traces the jagged path of her recovery from the disease.
Although String Quartet OCD dramatizes one person’s personal experience with mental illness, it seeks to give voice to the universal fears of all people about our and our children’s vulnerability in a dangerous world.

“Excuse me for asking… but are you taking the Michael?”
Maybe Plunger have spent too long on the fringes of the blues scene, where everybody is in deadly earnest about what they do (even when you wouldn’t think so…) consequently we approached this album in a wary, “is it all an ironic pose?” state of mind. In our defence Brits do seem to have a problem taking country music entirely seriously (think Hank Wangford or the elevation of comedian Rich Hall to Maverick festival headliner) but Robert ‘Hacker’ Jessett and Anne Gilpin (the backbone of Morton Valence) are self-professed lovers of American roots music, so perhaps we shouldn’t doubt their bona fides.
The eleven tracks of their eponymously-titled eighth album range considerably further than the borders of what might be thought of as ‘country’, although there’s more than a dash of that in the opening acoustic-led, slow waltz Summertime In London, the mid-paced Poco/Nitty Gritty boogie of I’ve Been Watching You / You’ve Been Watching Me with its twangsome Tele and Loretta/Conway two-way conversational vocals, the Nashville music-box waltz Bob & Veronica’s Big Move and the train-track bustle of Mary’s House, with its suspect lyric delivered in a Gram-and-Emmylou-move-to-Kilburn-style).
Borderland flavours spice the bobbysox 50s plaint Like A Face That’s Been Starved Of A Kiss (cracking title, by the way) and the latinate slink of Me And My Old Guitar, reaching a peak in the almost full-on tango stop/startness of It Isn’t Easy Being An Angel, while hazy stoner vibes thread through the melancholic A Town Called Home and the rolling toms, bass line and mellotron wash of Together Through The Rain. There’s more trippy haziness plus a bit of Britpop quirk in Jim: where half-mumbled vocals, electric piano and tremolo-heavy hollow-body mix in with the faintly psychedelic swirl.
Surprisingly, there’s a full Byrds/Buffalo Springfieldesque bout of bustling folky Haight-Ashburiana in Brand New Morning: an urgent 6/8 beat from busy drums and bass (Jamie Shaw & Josh de Mita respectively) topped with a twin-voice harmony rapid-fire lead in a very 60s “New dawn” lyric, some Curved Air fiddle twiddles from Dylan Bates and building swirls of Hammond and piano accents (courtesy of Guy Jackson) all make this Plunger’s favourite track.
Justifiably credited with ‘an idiosyncratic songwriting style’, that could apply equally to their vocal stylings: Robert’s ranges across the country-blues spectrum from a very passable, smooth, soulful Ray Sawyer timbre in the opener via stonery drawls and the aforementioned mumble in Jim to a Waitsish delivery in It Ain’t Easy Being An Angel; Anne has a much less obviously ‘country’ style, more Slick/Driscoll 60s arthouse psych-folk, with a more spoken, clearer enunciation and tone, while the pair’s harmonising is often a bit approximate but that rather suits the often conversational approach... and this is Tufnell Park not Tennessee, right?
There’s some lovely instrumentation throughout: BJ Cole (who produced) adds lashings of pedal steel to several tracks, whether mournful as in the opener, coruscating highlights in I’ve Been Watching You… or lush washes like Together Through The Rain and his production touches add depth (like the heavily phased sha-la-las and surprise synth burst in Like A Face…); Amir John Haddad adds accomplished Mexicali acoustic lead flourishes to Me And My Old Guitar; Robert brings a splash of harmonica (rather un Countryish Young style in the opener, and a Do Not Forsake me Oh My Darling meets Last Of The Summer Wine in Bob & Veronica...) while Dylan Bates’ violin also contributes country lines on Bob & Veronica’s Big Move and gypsy fiddle trills, slurs and pizzicato on It Ain’t Easy…
Branding their defiantly English oeuvre ‘urban country’, Morton Valence pretty much pull that off (at more than one point Plunger found themselves recalling sleazy saloons in Camden’s Badlands c.1985!) which makes Morton Valence a pleasing and entertaining listen…
… even if we still can’t shake the niggling suspicion that there’s an artful North London tongue poked firmly into their post-modern cheeks.
Morton Valence is out tomorrow (18th November 2022) on Cow Pie Recordings

Slashers with an S/O who betrays them and calls the police on them.
:D Add death or whatever idk
Betrayal
Includes: Human!Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Human!Jason Voorhees, Bubba Sawyer, Thomas Hewitt, Brahms Heelshire
SFW/Angst/Murder/Hurt/Betrayal (duh)/Lots of sad murder men/Literally how could you
TW: Murder/Violence/idk what you expect it’s Michael myers
…
Aggressively cries in the arbys parking lot
This is terrifyingly sad I could Never I would rather die than betray any of them fjfjfnfjdjdjjddjnddn
Ok ok so I’m scribbling this out on mobile so ignore the absolute lack of a cut and (((i fuckin hate mobile editing also not really proofread either, something I’ll probably fix later
Anysituationship let’s hnNnNNNnNNnNnNnNnGh betray the slasher
Human!Freddy Krueger: (can’t blame you 10/10 deserves to be set on fire *wheeze*)
Honestly part of him expected it
But it still hurt so damn much
He had trusted you, the first person he ever trusted to this extent
Loretta was his wife, sure, but you? You were better
You knew everything about this man, he hid absolutely nothing from you, and he truly believed that you accepted and loved him
But when those lights started flashing outside of his home, he knew exactly what was happening, knew there was no getting out of it
You had betrayed him, fucked him over in the worst way you could
And you better hope they don’t make a mistake, because the moment he gets out, he’s coming for a visit
Your death won’t be quick, it will be dragged out for days, he’ll make sure you’re begging for forgiveness by the end of it
And maybe, just maybe, he’ll forgive you, take you back
He’ll let you loose and accept you with open arms
And then, you’ll feel the knife in your back, just as you had done to him
Michael Myers: (may god rest your soul)
Betray Michael? Call the police on him?
You don’t even make it out the door
Michael is smart, much smarter than everyone believes
He’s analytical, constantly aware of his surroundings, constantly observing everyone and everything
Including you
So the moment you start showing signs of even thinking about betraying him?
It’s over
Whatever emotions he had for you, he shuts off. You become just like everyone else in his life, you become a victim
You won’t even see it coming, the silent killer making his way to you and taking you out quickly
He’s not emotional about it like Freddy, no, he’s calculated and unfeeling, so lucky for you, you don’t suffer for long
If you somehow prolong your death, and beg him for forgiveness, you’ll learn quickly that Michael doesn’t go back
Once he shuts those feelings for you off, they don’t come back, you are nothing to him
The best thing to do is accept your fate, because if you do escape somehow, Michael will make it his mission to hunt you down and make you pay for what you did
0/10 don’t recommend hurting this man
Human!Jason Voorhees: (bro how could you,,,,,, I just *sobs violently)
Jason is heartbroken
How could you betray him? Didn’t you love him? He tried so hard, did his best to take care of you
When the police show up, he’s confused, not thinking of you being the culprit at all
At first, he’s going to resist, fight back
Until you tell him that you were the one to call them
He’s going to be so hurt, unable to even fight back as he cries
What did he do wrong? Was it something he said, something he did? What did he do that hurt you?
He won’t try to kill you, you betrayed him, sure, but he still loves you so damn much
You were his world, his sunshine, his everything, and he couldn’t take it, couldn’t take what you had done
If he does escape, he’s just going to go back to the camp and walk back up to what was once your shared home before he remembers
You won’t be there anymore
You don’t love him anymore
And at this point? He starts to believe that you never did
Bubba Sawyer: (WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY)
Bubbas confused, how did the police find his home? How did they find out what they had done?
He’s going to be panicking while trying to make sure that you’re okay, that you won’t be punished for whatever may happen
But when he finds out you called the police? That you reported everything that happened?
He’s crying, shaking his head, No, no, there’s no way, you wouldn’t do that, would you? You loved him, didn’t you?
His brothers are beyond pissed, and Drayton’s immediately yelling, “I knew we couldn’t trust them! I had a bad feeling about this from the damn start! Goddamnit Bubba you should’ve listened to me!”
Nubbins and Chop Top are angry, but more so angry that you hurt Bubba like that
They may not show it, sure, but they loved their brother dearly, and seeing him so upset hurt them both
Before the cops can get in, you’re dead. His brothers make sure of that
Bubba is so heartbroken and hurt he doesn’t even try to resist the police
His brothers, however, do, and in the midst of it all, the three of them don’t make it out alive
Bubba sits in the back of the police car numb and afraid, in one day he lost everyone that ever meant anything to him, all because he trusted you
Thomas Hewitt: (would deadass rather die than ever hurt this precious man in any shape way or form)
Thomas was doing his chores for the day, enjoying the lack of victims for once and the fact that Hoyt was out for a while
At first, when the car pulled up, Thomas assumed it was Hoyt, because who else could it be?
But, when the two strangers step out of the car, he knows something’s wrong
His first thought is to get to you, protect you from these potentially harmful strangers and keep you safe
But when you come running out of the house and to the police officers, begging for help, he finally understands
You called the police
How? He didn’t know nor care. The only thing his mind could process was the way his heart clenched in pain and sorrow at the realization
The two men began to approach him, guns drawn as you say in the back of the car
He just stood there, too numb with pain to actually fight back
Before they could actually arrest him though, Hoyt pulled up into the yard and caught the two men by surprise
It was over quickly
Thomas watched as you sobbed in the back of the car, knowing what was coming
His family wouldn’t be able to trust you ever again, and as for him? He wouldn’t be able to look at you ever again
But Hoyt won’t have it, he drags you out of the car, but doesn’t hurt you
Instead, he makes Thomas do it, he forces Tommy to end your life, and show you the consequences of your actions
After that, Thomas was never the same
He was more distant from everyone, more brutal with his kills
He never questioned Hoyt’s judgement again, never hesitated to take someone’s life
All because you tricked him into loving you
Brahms Heelshire: (honestly fair he would throw one (1) tantrum and I would throw hands)
Brahms would be scared the moment the police cars pulled into the yard
He’d hide in the walls, watching to make sure that none of them dared to try and come in
He’d look for you, wanting to keep you in the walls with him while the two of you waited them out
But when he sees you run to the police, begging for help, he’s livid
How dare you call the police and betray him!?
He definitely tries to resist, taking down a couple of officers before he’s finally restrained
If he ever gets out, he’s going back home and stew, trying to figure out a way to make you pay for what you had done
He’ll try to lure you back to the mansion, whether by pretending to be someone else or pretending to forgive you
If you fall for his trick and come back, your death will be violent
Even long after you’re gone he’ll continue stabbing your lifeless body, his anger too much to handle
He’ll never trust anyone ever again

Been thinking lately about billy having Peyton sawyers backstory like
Maybe Susan adopted billy when he was a baby and then she and her husband had max and he died sometime after so it’s just Susan raising these two kids
And billy doesn’t find out he’s adopted until his birth mom (she needs a name oh my god. I kinda wanna go with Loretta for some reason lmao) randomly shows up wanting to get to know him cuz she’s dying of cancer (which she doesn’t reveal until later because she wants to get to know billy on a real level and not make him feel like he has to spend time with her cuz she’s dying)
So they grow close in the few months before she dies and it’s all very sad
And then years later when billys settling into a career and in a long term relationship with Steve, neil comes showing up and he won’t say he’s billys dad but billy has his suspicions and Steve’s being really encouraging of billy pursuing that relationship etc etc
But then neil is flaking out on dinners and billy finds him drunk in his office one day when he’s coming into work (billy owns a car shop) and Neil’s real personality starts coming out and when he finally admits to being billys bad it’s just to say that he would’ve made a terrible father and billy was better off without him anyway and billys just pissed and upset about this whole interaction so he’s yelling at neil to get out of his office and never speak to him again
And billy visits Susan that night and hugs her and tells her how much he loves her and thanks her for being his mom etc etc and later when he goes home to steve he can cry while steve holds him the end
(Also worth mentioning I would like Loretta and neil to have Ellie and micks jobs like yes billys mom should be a music journalist/groupie and yes neil should be a famous guitarist and yes they should both have substance abuse problems that led to billy being given up for adoption in the first place because Loretta wanted a better life for him and also if billy still had issues with drugs and alcohol for a period of time despite all of this but got clean on his own I think that would be neat too)
