i have loved this song by acloudyskye for years. it is still one of my favorite pieces of his and his work shortly after in "a place where the mountains hide" has greatly influenced my own. i'm not entirely sure who in the collab came up with the arpeggios, but the root vibe and at least the (minor third?) piano resolutions do scream acloudyskye

ok so i did like two hours of research and analysis into the melodic components after transcribing a lot of the build. i'm not super confident in my analysis and i didn't do any analysis on the drop. but holy shit i love the seemingly never ending tension and release aspects in the build up.

the overall piece creates a wonderful atmosphere of unease, suspense, and energy. by slowly raising the low pass on the top end saw pluck, we get a beautiful neapolitan arpeggiated lead. resulting in a kind of classical vibe that harkens me back to fox stevenson's gunshot sonata and machiavellian bach from portal 2. the upper arp's frequent use of A# and occasionally F as chromatic passing tones add a deep sense of unease and harmonic color. A# giving the g minor arp a temporary d minor feeling and F leading us to believe resolution is near before pulling it all back and resetting. the deep bass plucks and softer choral element gradually fading in to add depth. at this point, one would be forgiven for thinking this is an 8 bar loop, left on soundcloud, forgotten, and it's time to skip. but the stage is set for what kind of song the listener is in for. the simplicity of the song is betrayed as a distant syncopative element reminisce of a bit crushed bell comes in from the back. peaking the listener's curiosity. this sets us up for the rest of the elements to swell in, grounding the song in mystique and the aforementioned g minor. the choral sampler, string sustains, and simple but effective piano further elevate the mystery and energy, hitting the precipice, leaving the listener to wonder when everything will finally resolve. finally, all converges on the climax as the patient listener is rewarded with a slap in the face. pulled close as to demand their attention as a wall of noise, choral voices, and saw waves hit the listener like, well, a wall, with a "porter robinson worlds live tour" type feel. a momentary respite in harmonic resolution before being ripped away as we are flung into hard hitting drums and new tense supersaw chords, punctuated solely by interspersed glitchy drum fills. the relatively short but fulfilling drop ending quickly as the song finally plays out. some somber and still unsettling piano chords echoing as all eventually dissolves into noise. imo, very few songs match the evolving energy yet shocking simplicity of exodus. it is truly a beautiful song that silently tells a story on a melodic tapestry, building a world, and leaving you wanting an explanation. exodus? from what? of what? c'est la vie. while it's really hard to say which parts were skye and which parts were lostkid due to both sharing similar production elements. it ultimately doesn't matter, but evidently it was a match made in heaven.
