POLL RESULTS JUST DROPPED!!

My hockeyblr experiences are largely catered to my own personal tastes -- mostly Leafs, a little Penguins and Stars, one or two who post about Stevie Y and Sergei Fedorov. These are obviously not the only teams out there.

This study was designed to survey as much of hockeyblr as it possibly could, gathering data on which teams people like and to what degrees. There were five questions and a free space -- my attempt to ask people to rank the teams they enjoyed in three levels, from religiously followed to casually affectionate, and an additional couple of questions on love for players versus team. I received over 500 responses. Here are the results.

Yeah, yeah, you all want to know: The most popular team is the Penguins, by a long shot, then the Leafs.

Because my sample size (n = 523) is actually fairly small compared to the number of NHL teams there are, I find definitive rankings tend to be difficult. It’s also worth noting that, as a mainly Leafs blog, my numbers are definitely going to be skewed a little in favour of the Leafs.

Your Guys

These are the teams closest to your heart: the ship you go down with, metaphorically or, depending on how married your old men are, literally. For me, I picked just the Leafs.

The average respondent had 1.9 teams in this category. The most popular, by far, was the Pittsburgh Penguins. Below is a table of teams, arranged roughly into tiers by the number of respondents. Each team has the number of respondents in brackets next to their three-letter code.

I allowed people to pick as many teams as they would like; the average person picked 1.9 teams, but here’s a distribution of how many teams they picked:

4 people picked 0 “your guys” teams, and 2 people picked seven, nine, or ten each teams. Just about half of people had one main team.

I then wondered: what teams were people most likely to only follow? That is, if you hold [x] team in the closest part of your heart, are you more or less likely to also hold any other teams? Almost exactly 25% of picks were solo; I wondered if there was any correlation at all.

Only a little bit! Of the samples large enough to actually consider (so: nothing in that cluster at the bottom left, who all received fewer than 10 picks total, and a few of whom -- CGY, CHI, NSH -- received zero solo pickers), the most devoted fans chose the Sharks, the Bruins, and the Leafs. The fans who liked the most other teams chose the Avs, the Kraken, the Canucks, Panthers, Sens, and Ducks.

Probably a next step would be to look for correlations: if people are a fan of one team, are they more likely to be fans of another? THAT BEING SAID that’s a lot of regressions. Maybe keep an eye on that for the future, but I don’t know!!

Objects of Enjoyment, and Generally Nice

These two were successive tiers meant to distinguish teams that people like from the ones in the category above. I admit I probably could have phrased the questions better; I received several comments saying that they’d watch any hockey when they wanted to put a game on. The dynamics between Your Guys versus Objects of Enjoyment versus Generally Nice would best be described as devoted fan of versus casual fan of versus favourable opinion towards. 

As I said a few paragraphs back, people picked 1.9 “devoted fan” teams on average. Again on average, they picked 4.7 “casual fan” teams and 6.5 “favourable opinion” teams. Not all ratios are equal, though! Some teams had significantly more casual than devoted fans, and others still were much more liked generally than average.

I gave each team’s “devoted” count an index number of 1 and measured their casual and favourable count as a ratio against the index number. The teams assembled themselves into a few groups.

No Commitment

Arizona and Anaheim have decided to be soulbonded (Excel refuses to let them have different-coloured dots) and it took me three hundred million years to attempt to (and unsuccessfully) fix, so let’s ignore that. These teams all have a fairly high slope of interest -- a range of casual interest at about five times the pace of fervent interest, and good opinion at about ten times fervent interest. The Calgary Flames are an outlier on the entire graph, not just here. 

Casual Interest

I gave up on trying to colour teams according to their real colours shortly after the Anaheim/Arizona debacle. Please employ the legend. Nashville is included on all five graphs for reference. These teams all have a casual interest factor of about 3, and a favourable opinion factor of around 5; the same ratio as the casual fans of the teams in the first category to their fervent fans.

Saturated Market

These teams have a much lower ratio of hardcore:casual:favourable fans, at about 1:2:3. 

We Get It, Those Are Your Guys

Pittsburgh and Toronto; these teams have an almost equal ratio of all three categories.

...Whatever This Is

Every other category is defined by its ratios; this category is defined by its shape. While all teams have their rate of hardcore fandom set as 1, the other two tend to increase in a roughly linear form, without too much significant difference between the first interval and the second interval.

These teams, though (again, Nashville is for scale) don’t do that: they have a set increase between hardcore and casual, and a significantly smaller increase (or, in a couple cases, a decrease) between casual and favourable. This suggests perhaps some kind of divisiveness; if you’re not already in there, do you really want to get in further? Either that, or it’s something closer to what the Leafs and Penguins have: that is, a devotion. Like you’re in or you’re out.

Taking these values together

Because the casual:hardcore ratios are measured as indexes and not absolute values, they say nothing about the actual popularity of the team in question -- Calgary is one of the least popular, which is why I assume it’s so weirdly high up; small sample sizes lead to higher error values!

But we do have the absolute values, so we can measure them against each other.

If we consider the “In or Out” to be a category of its own while the other four are along more of a continuum, then we can absolutely see a correlation here -- larger fandoms tend to have more involved fanbases.

Players or Teams?

I also asked participants if their guys tended to be players or teams -- and if those they liked at a more casual level tended to be players or teams.

The results are… not particularly surprising.

On a hardcore level, people tended to prefer teams, although the variability was pretty slight. On a casual level, individual players were much more popular.

I also wondered if people who chose more teams in the hardcore fan question tended to do that because they prefer players.

On average, people who picked players on their hardcore level chose 2.1 teams. People who picked teams chose 1.7 teams. That’s definitely a difference!

Fun Shtuff

I got way more write-in responses on the hardcore player/team question than on the casual question, including this:

Three separate people answered “Minnesota Wild” for their guys and chose no other teams on any level. Hell yes. (One person also did this for the Kings.)

It took about 300 responses before the first Flames fan (at the hardcore level.)

On all three levels, the Seattle Kraken are really popular -- they’re in the top five in each.

What's Next?

If I were to update this survey, I would probably include a question about where all of you are from -- some people (like me) follow their hometown team, while some people most certainly don't (shoutout to the one person from Edmonton who dislikes the Oilers) and others still don't have a hometown team (shoutout to my brasilian + european + etc mutuals and everyone else!!)

Affection — how do they show their love and affection?

He wants you, and everyone else, to know that he is enamored by you. And the best way for him to express that is through physical touch and words of affirmation. He'll burrow himself against you as he points out the things he favors about you.

"I wish you could see yourself the way I do, just so beautiful!"

Blood — how messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

Even though many would argue how amiable he is, behind that exterior there is something more nightmarish—more inclined to protect the ones cares for. Which means, he prepared to drench himself in the blood of his and his darling’s enemies.

Cruelty — how would they treat their darling once abducted?

Kyojuro will treat you as if he hasn't even kidnapped you, acting as if you two are a loving couple.

Darling — aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?

No…ish, unless he does it as punishment—he hates seeing you tears and hearing your screams. But he probably succumbs to it, if you're not willing to give him what he wants—the man wants kids.

Exposed — how vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

To a certain extent, he wants to be able to talk like a lover who needs to vent about their day or a person. But he doesn't want you to feel pity for him, and usually keeps it to himself.

Fight — how would they feel if their darling fought back?

As delusional as he is, he'll think someone put you to it or you are in need of attention—don't let him unravel the true reason, because that side of him is something you do not want to experience.

Game — is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

Kyojuro does not see this as a game, being his lover is not a game—he takes his relationship with you seriously and passionately. He despises your attempts of 'escape', though he suppose you need fresh air. Why else would you escape his loving embrace? Is someone feeding you lies, Y/N?

Hell — what would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

The worst experience is you breaking him out of his delusional state, making him realize how you actually feel and your intentions.

A day he came from a tiring mission, wanting nothing more for you to comfort him—though that wasn't going to happen. Those hours of that day you had mulled over the fact he had kidnapped you, deprived you of most of your freedoms, and forced you to become his 'lover'. For one thing, you were seething. Unfortunate for him and you, he had come home to you being furious. You shouted profanities at him and screamed how much you hated him for the things he did—his eyes dulling with each resentful word as glowered at you.

That day, he taught you to behave. A purplish bruise swelling on your cheek and scars soon to be tainting your skin.

Ideals — what kind of future do they have in mind for their darling?

He'll like to marry you and eventually have kids, and maybe get a companion or two.

Jealousy — do they get jealous? How do they handle it?

Not very often, he is pretty confident with his relationship with you. But if it's one of those times he is more irked by a person than ever, he will not hesitate to threaten or eliminate that person. You are his, he is yours.

Kisses — how do they act around or with their darling?

Like what a lover would do: kissing you, snuggling with you, asking how your day was/is, being fun-loving. He wants you to reenact those affectionate gestures, for you to love him like he loves you.

Love letters — how would they go about approaching their darling?

Kyojuro is straightforward, and effortlessly announces that he'll like to get to know you. Confident steps towards you, beaming blithely, and speaking with you as if he knew you for years.

Mask — are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

No, besides stowing away his yandreish tendencies around his coworkers. He is happy-go-lucky kyojuro!

Naughty — how would they punish their darling?

If you give him a reason to, though it determines how he feels and how you strike him in a way with your words or fist, he'll punish you. If it's one those bad days, he'll result to physical punishments like spanking and slapping you. But if it's a good day, he'll isolate you or emotionally hurt you.

Oppression — how many rights would they take away from their darling?

A good bit, you're not to exit the house without him or someone of his choosing. You're not allowed to converse with certain people without his permission. You are to love him, even if you don't…

Patience — how patient are they with their darling?

Kyojuro is a patient man, though at times he can lose his cool and snap at you.

Quite — if their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

If his darling successfully escapes him, Kyojuro is in disbelief. He loved you, he fed you, he cared for you, and got you whatever your little heart desired and this is how you treat him. His disbelief turns into anger, and the more time you're gone it turns to sorrow. He'll never give up his search for you, asking from person to person and asking for the help of his friends.

He'll feel rather dejected if you pass, his heart aching as he grieved harshly. Becoming less conpassionate and cheery than he was before. Eventually or possibly hallucinating, and making another world within his mind where you are still alive. Though deep within him, he knows, but he isn't willing to move one.

Regret — would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling?

Kyojuro doesn't see it as kidnapping, he's relatively delusional, he sees it as if he is bringing you home.

Stigma — what brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?

You were just as compassionate as him to protect the ones in need, you were fearless and humble—he loved that. Though the nagging feelings became more noticeable: infatuation, love, and protectiveness. He needed you, and with a simple gesture he knew you already accepted him being your lover…though you didn't.

Tears — how do they feel about seeing their darling scream, cry, and/or isolate themselves?

He absolutely detests it, and will comfort you as much as he can. Killing and threatening the people he believed to be the cause, was it him? No, no, no. He knew you loved him, so that could not be it! It had to be some person or maybe you're having a terrible day? Yeah…

Unique — would they do anything different from the classic yandere?

Yes, he already believes that his darling was in love with him at first sight. More delusional than a regular yandere!

Vice — what weakness can their darling exploit in order to escape?

His vulnerable times, when he is sensitive to your words but that's rarely. Though if you catch a time when he is on a mission longer than his regular, and are able to escape the people he left to watch you, then you could probably escape.

Wit’s end — would they ever hurt their darling?

In extreme cases, maybe when he becomes more aware that you're trying to leave him and he'll slice your ankles and more.

Xoanon — how much would they revere or worship their darling?

More than usual, he'll do anything for you besides let you free. He'll bend backwards for you, just to see you happy and to receive affection from you.

Yearn — how long do they pine after their darling before they snap?

Three to four weeks, you should've been home by then. He needed you to be home, he needed your attention, he needed to protect you from those man eating demons and greedy-undeserving people.

Zenith — would they ever break their darling?

Oh goodness no, Kyojuro only wants your love. He loves you too much to see you so disheartened!

i'm literally hooked on poetry. even on days where i can't sit down to read a book, i try to consume at least one poem a day bc it keeps me sane. it actually does. i recommend signing up to one poem a day newsletters--those have been a game changer for me. as for recommendations, my favorite poems change every week, but current faves (whose authors i regularly go back to/are a good starting point) would be:

My peeps, I think it is about high time for some emancipation for my homegirl Tav here. She needs a nickname.

As I've explained before: her name is Tav, for real. I didn't know back then what would come of this game and then well, I wrote... a lot. Now I'm kinda sad because I feel like she's not as unique. And I still like her just being Tav, it has a nice ring. But it's hard to have her be a real OC when her name is... unrecognisable.

So I will keep it in her lore that her name is Tav, but I thought: what if Astarion gave her a nickname, so she can be Tav but she can also be more unique.

So here's the poll - some short explanations for the options under the cut. Also ofc I'll make the final decision but I like to hear your thoughts.

So we know Astarion wouldn't probably be super creative with nicknames (so am I - yes, this is my cover up to hide how I have no super good ideas for this?). But here are some quick thoughts behind the options this far:

Kat: Astarion calls her his little street cat. She grew up on the streets, can be a little grimy and doesn't take super good care of herself. So Cat, but Karlach would throw in to write it with a K because "just like Mama K!" Astarion rolls his eyes, Karlach laughs.

Fox: Because she has reddish brown hair (really more red tbh). And Astarion loves how vibrant her hair looks especially in the direct sun.

Silv: Her eyes are silver, but "Silver" sounds stupid, so Astarion has the very good idea to scratch off the last two letters.

Fien/Devy: both relate to the same idea that she has horns tattooed over her eyes - to look a bit more intimidating?? She did it out of an act of rebellion when she was younger, now she rolls with it. So the idea is to cutesy-fy "fiend" or "devil".

I'm happy to hear your thoughts and ideas! Help me give her a good name!

The polls function is my absolute favorite feature on this website now. Almost every single one I’ve seen has been about, like, some collaborative creative exercise or game, or even an art piece through its formatting. like most other site’s polls are like “which of these things is the best? which one WINS and crushes the others?” and ppl argue about it in the comments or whatever.

And then over here we’re making planets. baking cakes. making the letter ‘E’ or a staircase or drawing a dick or a weird looking guy. Asking people what their favorite Whatever is, whether its punctuation or smiley emote or color, it’s not about what the best is, it’s what do you like the most? :-)! The most competitve I’ve ever seen it get was with the ones having funny little bugs race each other and even that wasn’t too serious.

Letter from the Mod (Under the Cut):

Introduction:

So… uh… been a while since we talked like this, completely nervous, unprepared tournament mod to the hundreds of thousands of potential listeners and followers of the poll. Well, now that it’s over, I want to introduce myself.

Hi, you can call me Snow. I’ve been a Type-Moon fan for about a year now. I got into this series when my cousin introduced me to “Fate” and from there I started to grow on this series at an… large… unnormal… potentially problematic and unhealthy way.

“Where’d the inspiration come from?”:

When I got into Fate, the one thing that reached out to me were the characters themselves and their relationship with one another, and the more I looked into the nasuverse, the more characters that I found that I feel in love with, the more I started to hate, the more I started to have convoluted and mixed feelings towards, but the one thing I loved about most was how characters interacted with each other and how well, or unwell, they get along and nothing else can show my love and appreciation for character dynamics than the couples of Type-Moon.

The couples of Type-Moon range anywhere from being weird to comical to sad to disgusting to wholesome and even genuinely life changing, with the characters themselves having dynamic that either showed how much they pine for love, how love broke them, how love managed to fix them, or by simply how wholesome they are. When Samurai Remnant released and featured a character who loves their spouse very much that they make it their main focus in game, juxtaposed by their spouse still showing their love and devotion for them, it was the thing that eventually caused me to make this tournament in the first place (they weren’t in the tournament though, but it’s the thought that counts).

Running the Tournament:

I was completely sure that I wanted to run this tournament, but the main caveat was the fact that I never ran a tournament like this before and it became very clear, very quickly that I had no idea what I was doing (the potentially weird rules for the tournament and the delayed start times were a big red flag of this, so I’m glad we had so many people stuck around despite that).

Still, I wanted to do my best for this tournament, so I created everything myself (with my sister helping to find a tournament bracket website). And when I mean everything I mean I edited together the main banner of the blog and edited together most of the couple portraits (I got lazy and used official art for some of them, guess which ones)

What’s next?:

Honestly, I want to do another tournament sometime. Obviously not immediately since I also want time off, but I’d also want to do something else and see more people come together to vote on something we all may or may not enjoy. And while I have no ideas at the moment (if you want to give any ideas then feel free to share then through the askbox or through the submission box) but maybe this blog will go through a renovation when I figured something out, hm?

Honestly, this tournament was a bigger undertaking than what I originally thought, but I’m glad I did this. I consider it a learning experience.
