Audio Drama Sunday, 12/4/22
Yesterday was a long, big, busy Sunday, filled with some amazing audio dramas that I must share with all of you.
Dead Air, by Realm Media (created by Gwenda Bond) - If you like the true crime genre of podcasts, then a fictional version might just be up your alley. It's suspenseful, emotional, and filled with dark, dry humor. I've been devouring it recently, stopping just short of binging the entire thing in a single setting. I'm not a true crime fan, but I'm still hooked. If you liked Arden, I think you'll like this show.
Greater Boston, by Alexander Danner and Jeff Van Dreason - Humor, surrealism, quiet drama are all at the heart of Greater Boston. I know it's been around for a while and has a huge fandom but I'm excited that I get to experience this show for the first time six years after it started. Once I finish, I have a feeling I'll start the series over again without missing a beat.
A Ninth World Journal, by David S. Dear - The ultimate actual play turned audio drama, A Ninth World Journal episodes might be short but they are packed to the gills with content and keep you guessing as to what is going to happen next. David S. Dear is a fantastic narrator I've heard on several other shows at this point and it's wonderful to see him shine as the star.
Exoplanetary, by C. Christopher Heart - Managing to weave half a dozen sci-fi stories together in a nonlinear fashion without getting things too confusing is no easy task, but Exoplanetary as not only done just that, but thrived at it and keeps me coming back for new stories and new angles. It's filled with heart and emotion that stay with you long after the episodes is finished. From robotic love to colonialism to time travel, this show has it all.
Among the Stars and Bones, by Ungodly Hour Productions - Technically this will be my third listen but each time I get something more out of it, I feel more for the characters and understand their motivations. Telling a story from 8 or 9 limited viewpoints is a great way to employ the unreliable narrator, or as it happens, 8 or 9 unreliable narrators. I've seen recently that they are casting for season 2 and I cannot contain my excitement!
Old Gods of Appalachia, by DeepNerd Media - Folk horror, when done right, is better than any subgenre of any genre of literature, bar none. I will live and die on this hill. Old Gods does folk horror the right way. There's mood and atmosphere, a sense of place and a sense of dread. The show will have you jumping at shadows and creepy noises down by the creek at the witching hour.
The Town Whispers, by Cole Weavers - While similar to Old Gods of Appalachia, The Town Whispers takes cosmic horror and turns it up to 11 alongside all the folk horror that creeps around the edges of the Fort. The story telling is sharp and a sense of doom and dread purvey every word Mr. Weavers speaks. It's beautiful and chilling and leaves me needing more.
Malevolent, by Harlan Guthrie - It's a simple premise, guy wakes up unable to see with a creepy voice in his head that is not his own. Oh also there's a dead body, also there are monsters running around, oh also lots of creepy books, oh also it's set in the heart of Lovecraft Country. What could go wrong? I'm late to the party on the fandom for this show but as I work through the episodes I see why the fandom has exploded Hannibal style all over Tumblr.
Hi Nay, by Motzi Dapul - What if the Magnus Archives were less focused on Eurocentric monsters and fears and entities? What if there was a less organized group of people going after them? What if all of it was recorded lo-fi and given a health dose of Filipino folklore? Well, you'd have Hi Nay and you'd sweep the internets with a new, obsession worthy podcast that teaches as much as it entertains. Also they are working on getting 1000 subs on Youtube so get on that people!
The Kingmaker Histories, by Meg Molloy Tuten - Made by the same geniuses that brought us Less is Morgue, this audio drama gives us a glimpse at a steampunk world filled with magic. I enjoyed the first episode immensely. The acting, the script, the sound design are all top notch. Have to say I love this Ariadne character, she seems nice.
Moonbase Theta, Out, by D.J. Sylvis - Dystopian futures, corrupt governments, sinister warnings about the moon. Sounds like a typical day in 2022, right? Moonbase Theta, Out was and is ahead of its time in terms of storytelling, narratives, and characters. It's really a who's who in the world of audio drama with "famous" voices popping in and out to voice characters that will make you do the Leo pointing meme at least twice and episode.
WOE.BEGONE, by Dylan Griggs - Part surrealist sci-fi, part existential horror, WOE.BEGONE is a show that makes me want to run away screaming whilst at the same time binging more and more episodes. How deep does this creepy, deadly game go? What is the point of it all? Will Mike just be able to relax and have a nice time? I need to know!!!
And 195, by Guendalina Cilli - I just found out about this audio drama yesterday and I'm already a fan. I'm a runner with a bad sense of direction myself so the basis of the show is very, very familiar to me (aside from getting lost in other dimensions, that's not familiar but you never know in these days).
We Fix Space Junk, by Battle Bird Productions - Dystopian space dramas are a trope for a reason, but We Fix Space Junk manages to avoid the pitfalls and enjoy all the benefits of said trope. It's fresh, fun, and exciting. I've decided it was time for a re-listen to see what things I missed out on in the beginning that are integral parts of the show by the end. I'm already having a blast!
Care & Feeding of Werewolves, by Brenna Anderson-Dowd - What if True Blood were a sitcom, but far better than the sum of those two parts? What if it were funny and informative, silly and meaningful? You'd have Care & Feeding of Werewolves and you'd enjoy every single episode of this weird little show, and I do mean that endearingly. If it weren't weird, it wouldn't be nearly as fun.

OK I now wish to your attention to some crowdfunders that may have been missed amongst all the twitter fuckery: Afflicted! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/afflicted-season-two-the-bell-witch-returns#/

Folks from the area insist that the Bell Witch has returned, almost 150 years after her original appearance, but is this Bell Witch a copycat, or something far more sinister?

LIST OF REJECTED CHARACTER (SO FAR)
Under the cut is a list of characters who, so far, have been rejected. I am also listing the reason on why they are being rejected:
The following list of 5 characters have been rejected for falling more under the category of characters who have been comatose / hibernated / been in a deep slumber:
Aurora from Disney's Sleeping Beauty [NOTE: While Aurora from Disney's Sleeping Beauty herself is not accepted, other variations from the Sleeping Beauty story HAVE been accepted such as Shrek's Sleeping Beauty and Silver from Twisted Wonderland. The reason why this specific version of Sleeping Beauty isn't accepted is because her sleeping was not a part of her characterization- she basically just fell into a magical coma- but the accepted versions DO have sleeping as part of their characterization.]
Cthulhu from The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft
Flayn from Fire Emblem: Three Houses
He Xuan from Tian Guan Ci Fu / Heaven Official's Blessing
Robin from Fire Emblem: Awakening
The following list of 2 characters have been rejected for falling under the category of "one-off joke", i.e., their sleepy trait was a joke in part chapter or episode and not a consistent part of their character: (If I am incorrect and there are multiple instances throughout the work they appear in that alludes to them being a sleepyhead, feel free to send it to me and I will un-reject them)
Crowley from Good Omens, specifically the book by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett
Pavel Iwaszkiewicz from Community
The following list of 2 characters have been rejected for being from real life:
Every cat [NOTE: Dude I literally said not to submit yourself or pets from real life. I know not every cat is a pet, but come on.]
The country of Montenegro [NOTE: Okay this was a funny submission but sorry. Not counting real people... or countries.]
The following list of 3 characters have powers that have to do with sleep, but don't seem to be a sleepyhead themselves:
Enmu from Demon Slayer
Faruzan from Genshin Impact
Sumireko Usami from Touhou Project
And finally, the following list of 4 characters are the rest of the rejected characters. I will list the reason why under their name:
Blathers from Animal Crossing. I haven't played Animal Crossing, but from what I can tell this character isn't actually sleepy, they're just nocturnal so have an opposite sleep schedule as the player.
Greece / Heracles Karpusi from Hetalia Invoking my "right to reject any submission". You could not pay me to accept a Hetalia / country personification into this poll.
Jack Townsend from Tales from the Gas Station Seems like an interesting book! But he seems to be an insomniac, which is the opposite of a sleepy character.
Sleepy Dwarf Character from Once Upon a Time (in Space) by the Mechanisms The submitter said they didn't remember their name which is why I said "sleepy dwarf character" instead of Sleepy or whatever their name is because I'm not sure if that is their name. I would appreciate it if you know the name of a character you are submitting. If they don't have a name, chances are that they are such a minor character that I don't think they should count. Not always, but usually. Supported by the fact that when I tried to Google the character I could barely find any information on them except that they sang on verse in one song in this entire album.

Does this sleeper GameCube hit still hold up over 20 years later for fans of Lovecraftian horror?
Eternal Darkness is an episodic action adventure game driven by a central story, as opposed to traditional horror like Resident Evil, and is heavily inspired by the stories of HP Lovecraft to attempt to portray beings beyond human comprehension and the existential horrors that ensue. In fact, it has more in common with survival games like The Last of Us, except with magic and spells instead of guns, knives, and bricks (although there are arrows) - with the important distinction that none of the many protagonists are expected to survive, calling into doubt the fate of the main character Alex. Think of it more like Lovecraft Country.
While there is the occasional jump scare that you might see in a horror film, handled cleverly by the player's control of the camera versus a director, the games biggest contribution to any genre comes in the form of "Sanity effects" as the player witnesses the horrors around them and test their mental fortitude. Not only do these affect the characters in the game, but many of the best effects are aimed at the player, with bugs crawling all over the screen, fake save file errors, or false endings claiming the rest of the game will pick up in (the sadly non-existent) Eternal Darkness 2. This "Sanity" system was re-used for Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, the GameCube port of the original Metal Gear Solid PlayStation classic.
Also for fans of actual multiple endings, each playthrough can be dominated by an archnemesis and minions that are stealthily selected at the beginning of the game, and only by playing through it three times for each of these choices will the final, real ending be revealed. The different emphasis for each choice also lends to a coloration (no pun intended) of the entire playthrough experience, and for me was intriguing enough to, of the course of a several years, return to this game with enthusiasm each time.
Now a classic in its own right, Sean returns to Eternal Darkness 22 years later to see if it still holds up in the world of HDTV.

I so badly would like to see the script for interview with the vampire's episode 5... Do you have ang idea if anyone is working on collecting them and/or who I should contact?
If anyone is, they aren't posting about it.
Pilots are easy to find, anything else is hard. For Supernatural we get our scripts from eBay at sometimes outrageous prices (high triple digits) and local (Vancouver area) memorabilia sellers. Others we got PDFs from people who won charity auctions (four digits).
For IWTV, local crew would be New Orleans area sellers who are no longer working for the show...it could be awhile. I haven't heard about any charity auctions of scripts signed by the actors (nothing has crossed my dash or timeline) but that's not even something we go near, we aren't built for that 💸💸💸💸
One very, very long shot would be if IWTV was submitted by AMC to the Emmys for writing because Deadline's It Starts on the Page series has PDFs of For Your Consideration scripts (2021; 2022) and that series has given us scripts from The Boys, Stranger Things, Wandavision, and so many more.
Just to give you a sense of what's out there for other AMC shows (it's not much):
Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul: a Collection on Reddit
Mad Men: Pilot (Writer's First Draft); 7 from Season 1 & 2 from Season 7
The Walking Dead: 3 from season 1
Fear the Walking Dead: Pilot
Halt and Catch Fire: Pilot
Misc: Script Slug has an AMC tag
Resources for finding TV scripts online:
r/screenwriting guide to finding scripts online
Script Hive has a screenplay collection, you need to be a member of their discord to access (this might be where something from IWTV lands, be sure to read all the rules and regs so you don't get booted from the server/do what you need to do to be in "good standing" to be able to peek in on the script collection every month or so)
TV Writing (see also the credits page, most every other site has taken the stuff from here and reuploaded it to their site)
TV Calling: Comedies, Dramas
BBC Writersroom: Script Library
Scribd: mostly trash (badly done transcripts), sometimes treasures like this Yellowjackets 1.04 "Bear Down" script
Films because these two sites are great: Scripts Onscreen will help you find a pdf for free or give you a direct link to Script City (ScriptFly too but they charge way more and are really obvious about just stealing shit from TV Writing to resell, I refuse to buy from them)
Stashes for Other Shows:
Sliders Scripts Collection
SupernaturalWiki Scripts and Casting Sides
This is Who We Are: X-Files Scripts
Misha Green's website: Lovecraft Country
Living Dead Guy Productions (Wonderfalls, Hannibal, Pushing Daisies)
Beauty and the Beast Scripts and Transcription Project
Call Me a Cab: Scarecrow and Mrs. King scripts

Episode 1 Recap: The Color Under the Shadow of Space
Welcome back! It's our first official episode.
If you listened to our intro episode and/or read the blog you know that we’re officially kicking off our research with AI-generated recommendation Under the Shadow (2016). After we wrapped recording, I decided to throw my pick The Color Out of Space (2020) for a solid - something comes into my house and ruins the vibes - double bill.   Hey look! It's us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before we get into that, we start off by chatting about our fancy photo shoot with photographer of Terrifier 2 fame and friend of the pod, Jeff Harris Studios. Thank you, Jeff! Dropped a few favorites below. Spooky stuff.
We’re super excited to have him on in a few episodes to discuss shooting on horror film sets and some of his favorite scary movie tropes.  Cannibal stuff is mad scary and mad gross, yo. I insist on digging in on Armie Hammer’s disturbing proclivities. After a viewing of House of Hammer, I’m left speechless on what I’ve seen & heard but excited to share my vengeance-filled lucid dreams. Also richies probably eat people all the time, right?
Rina then shares an update on OpenAI’s legal hot water. ChatGPT be hallucinating too much and OpenAI is going to need to evaluate their loosey goosey legal language. Finally, we share shark attack stories since Jaws was back in theaters 4th of July weekend. Also, are there lake sharks? I don’t want to know.
We then dig into Babak Anvari’s Under the Shadow (2016) but Rina is unfortunately reminded of another Babak Anvari movie, Wounds (2019). She did not care for it. Guess who’s in it? Armie Hammer. Womp, womp. He was definitely part of the problem but Rina's not keen on the execution overall.
Anywho, we do a pretty solid recap of the movie - it’s 1988, Tehran and we’re introduced to a family navigating life during a war as well as mysterious and supernatural happenings in their home. Rina does a great job laying out the lore of the Djinn and chat some of the tropes - creepy little kids, Moms being suss, and real-life terror juxtaposed with supernatural terror. We discuss some of the creative choices that really stood out to us; like the fact there was little to no music and the washed out, bright overexposed photograph look of the movie. We talk about our favorite scenes - a solid jump scare, a creepy foot through a ceiling crack, and an open-ended non-ending. All in all a fantastic movie. Mad Scary not Mad Corns. Significantly better than Wounds. This was definitely Babak’s story to tell.
We keep it going and chat through Richard Stanley’s  The Color Out of Space (2019) based on the H.P. Lovecraft story of the same name. Jesus Christ. This movie. We talk high-level about the plot. You have five to ten minutes of exposition and an introduction to the Gardner family - they live in the country, they have llamas which may or may not be a poor investment, the daughter is a Wiccan, her brother is into smoking weed and space stuff, their little brother wears glasses and has a lisp.
Things immediately start going crazy after a meteorite crashes onto the Gardner’s land. The level and pace in which this movie escalates can only be likened to a freight train speeding into a fever dream. It’s also mad gross. This is Richard Stanley’s second mainstream movie. His first was the ill-fated Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). It was so bad they made a documentary about it. Anywho, this man clearly likes gooey gross because he leans in hard. The body horror and gore is off the chain. My man also has an unsavory past with women - can we separate the art from the artist? I'm having a time with it.
Wait!? Did I mention Nick Cage plays Papa Gardner? I didn’t!? My bad. Um, Nicholas Cage plays the dad in this movie and I just love him for it. If I ever get to meet him, I need to ask him about some of his choices -  all inspired but I just want to know why he made them cuz we got theories. Mr. Cage, what's up with that voice? Nick Cage's performance, the saturated colors, and the narrative device make this movie a must watch. Mad Scary approved.
We’ve collected some tropes from both movies. While Rina felt they weren’t super similar, I think the tropes speak volumes. Horror movies that take place in the home feel the scariest because our homes are where we are meant to feel safe, comfortable, and the most ourselves. The idea of something coming into that safe space and terrorizing you, and you have nowhere to go to escape it, is mad scary.
Common Horror Movie / Scary Tropes & Devices
Tumblr media
Here are the interviews that I promised:   Babak Anvari Interview Richard Stanley Interview
For Episode 2, we decided on Alex Garland’s Ex Machina (2015), a movie we were planning to watch together pre-podcast. It’s one of Rina’s favorites and feels very fitting in terms of our AI co-collaborator. Finally, we asked Chat GPT to recommend a good companion film for Ex Machina. Here’s how it went:
Tumblr media
In classic ChatGPT form, it beefed the request and recommended an episode of Black Mirror. No. That’s not a movie. We try again:
Tumblr media
Ok! We’ll be watching Ex Machina & The Machine next episode. We’ll also start to talk about our writing process and make some plans/next steps around writing our script. I’ll also try to limit the amount of times I say the word fascinating. See you in a few weeks!
