on the one hand i think the more understated/lowkey traps that don’t involve extremely intricately built machinery like the razor wire maze or the knife chair or even just the bathroom are much better and more affecting and sometimes scarier from a narrative perspective directly BECAUSE of their simplicity but on the other hand god i fucking love some of the dumbass complicated looney tunes deaths from the later movies. crushed in a trash compactor room. melted to death with acid. cooked in a brazen bull like a fucking ancient greek criminal. literal roadrunner and wil e coyote shit

ok sorry but i do firmly believe that the death note anime suffers from how much it cuts of matsuda. this isnt just my Blorbo Bias btw, matsuda is a really important character in the manga and so much of the stuff they cut would have made the anime, especially the second half, make more thematic and structural sense like. matsuda is the only character who visibly struggles with the morality of kira throughout the manga, starting from one of his first appearances and going all the way through after soichiros death. like!!! he is the medium through which light's "good guy" persona publicly engages with the morality of kira!! everyone else knows exactly where they stand, but matsuda doesn't and that allows him to be an audience surrogate and vehicle for the ideological struggles of the story. and so much of that is just cut from the anime so you have Zero ideological conflict in an anime about a scenario RIFE for that conflict. the final chapter of death note is a matsuda-centric chapter that was never adapted, but it turns near's final plot from supremely stupid to supremely ethically ambiguous and thought-provoking, offering insight into near's character! not to mention all the smaller details, like matsuda pretending to be L to mello, which both answers the question of "why didn't mello go after the task force/continue threatening sayu once he had the notebook" AND sets up his later offer to take the shinigami eyes, which the anime kept. im also lowkey salty they cut matsuda reaching out to light in sympathy at the very end — it really serves to highlight just how pitiful and human light is as he dies. and thats not even getting INTO the Bisexuality. like i know they had limited time, and a lot of the stuff they cut definitely does make sense to cut like the looney tunes ass mogi adventures, but.

Susanoo and Toshigami probably live in one of those crappy, one bedroom apartments with a slumlord landlord that he affords by working part-time in a convenience store and Toshigami watches Looney Tunes reruns while Susanoo studies for medical school. He probably doesn't even tell Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi that he has a kid. Just shows up with him one day and is like "Oh yeah, that's my boy. He likes Starbursts."

Seriously, why was the Comedy Central revival lowkey shippy? lol. If it aired in a later time, I'd wonder if some of the writers actually shipped Frender. Fry and Bender bathed together and had a pretty seductive dance in one episode (I can't remember which one, but I know you know which scene I'm talking about, lmao.) I hope it continues in Hulu revival. Queer culture has exploded in the decade after "Meanwhile" aired.

I was just talking about this with some other Frender shippers recently, and I've thought about this a lot. I have quite a bit to say on this subject as well.

I know that this a very controversial topic, but I'm of the opinion that Fry and Bender's relationship was queer-coded on purpose. Queer-coding has been around for a very long time in American entertainment thanks to the Hays Code. Movies and TV shows didn't allow queer people for a very long time, and if I'm being honest, they still barely allow queer characters. Queer characters and queer stories are incredibly rare in television and film.

There are a number of reasons why this is the case. For one, there was obviously the Hays Code, which made it illegal to have out gay characters. This meant that queer writers would code characters as gay. It would fly over the heads of straight executives and audiences, but queer people have a keen eye for these things. Another reason why queer characters are so rare is that we aren't a marketable demographic. Executives greenlight what makes money, and they don't take risks. They see queer stories with queer characters as too much of a risk and would rather greenlight reboots (hi Futurama).

I tend to be very critical of a lot of canon queer representation because I personally feel (with exceptions) that a lot of canon queer rep is designed to be palatable toward heterosexual audience members. One of my biggest issues is that you rarely see queer main characters. You very rarely see shows where the main pairing is queer. I think that executives are more okay if some side characters are queer as opposed to the main characters (especially if the side characters are disposable).

Now back to Fry and Bender's relationship. Back in the early 2010s, or even 1999, it's possible that the writer's purposefully coded their relationship as queer. And there are a lot of gags and episodes where Fry and Bender are purposefully written to be like a couple. I don't think it was intended to be romantic in the same way that Fry and Leela's relationship was; however, you never know and you can never say for sure. I’ve always thought that Fry and Bender’s relationship was similar to Bugs and Daffy’s relationship in the Looney Tunes Show. They live together, they bicker like a married couple, they act like a married couple, etc. They’re definitely queer-coded, but both characters still have female love interests.

Here’s a more blatant example of queer-coding in Futurama: the yuri fanservice between Amy and Leela. It is definitely done for the sole purpose of titillating straight, cis, male audience members at the expense of gay women. And yeah this does make me uncomfortable, but I won’t get into it here. However, this is still an obvious form of queer-coding, even though it wasn’t to be covert representation. Actually, Farnsworth and Zoidberg have quite a few moments where they act queer, and you can make the argument at that all of the main characters in this show are queer-coded. Well, except for Hermes (maybe).

If you divorce Fry and Bender relationship from the shipping aspect of canon and merely look at it through a queer lens, it would be a huge deal if it became canon. I cannot stress how important it would be in terms of queer rep. For one, both of them are main characters, and iconic characters at that. AND they are the main characters of a well-known franchise, and they are both men. Fry and Bender are not your handsome, skinny, bishonen types at all. They aren’t conventionally attractive. Which is honestly why I love them so much as a queer ship, but I’m also not going to get into that with this post.

Futurama is an adult cartoon geared toward straight men; the idea of getting representation like this from Futurama is nearly impossible. That’s another reason why it would be a massive deal. However, I can also imagine the backlash from viewers. So many fans would be furious, and most of the target audience would be furious. I don’t think that the writers might not want to make Fry and Bender explicitly gay (which is fine, that’s their right). However, even if they really did, I doubt they would be allowed to do so. I do think there is a slim chance, because Matt Groening does have a lot of control over this property, and maybe he could make it happen, but I’m also going to be realistic here.

This leads into another point I want to address, and that’s the worrying trend with the obsession of wanting ships to become canon. I think this leads to a lot of bullying and abuse over the Internet in the name of shipping wars, which I find disturbing. I think the biggest issue is that the obsession comes from the fact that canon seems to give people validation. That they can tell someone that their ship is right because it is canon or because they think it was meant to be canon. This is dangerous to me, because a lot of popular queer ships will never be canon, and that’s just reality. I think that can change, but not any time soon. 

There’s the possibility that Fry and Bender were coded on complete accident (which I honestly find hard to believe sometimes), and that the writers really did write their relationship as completely platonic. I’ve never been able to find evidence that they even know Frender exists, let alone speaking out about it, so I have no clue. However, I’m completely confident that they would give their blessing for people to ship them and read them as romantic, even if that wasn’t their initial intention. And knowing that they would support the queer fans like that is enough for me. 

I’m going to end on this note. Matt Groening’s new show Disenchantment has a bisexual female lead. She has a romance with a mermaid on screen, and her sexuality is explicit. We don’t know what his plans are for Futurama. Maybe he will let characters like Fry, Leela, and Bender have a queer side that can be explored now that it’s 2023. And if you ask me? I would love it if Freeler became canon and all three of them got married to each other. That’s my dream canon ship. <3

Edit: The success of Our Flag Means Death, which is unapologetically gay and has an unconventional gay couple at that, is proof that queer rep does do well with a broader audience. Maybe we’ll get more shows like it in the future.

I've been thinking that i might be Matt Murdock, having strong kin feels and some stuff that might be memories, i've also been watching Daredevil (of course), but honestly I still don't understand how the process of kinsidering has to be? I usually just go ahead and go crazy and just kinfirm straight ahead the characters i slightly feel like they fit, sometimes I'll do some pendulum questions but, do i have to do something else? I honestly don't know, i want to be serious with this one kin, i don't know why. I've also been thinking of re-kinsidering all of my fictotypes, doing some more thinking and doing it "properly". BORN into a rapture-esque cult , he never really stood a chance at having a normal life.  they kept preaching about an oncoming apocalypse ravaging the planet. it actually happened when boone was around 28 and they were all like HAHA SEE , and then tried to glorify it. but basically all of them either succumbed to the virus or got torn apart in the name of the holy fungi spirits , so ...

SO yeah his dad was kinda crazy ( he fr made people call him calamity ) ; was one of the leaders who believed in co-existing with the virus like only the chosen would evolve into some superior race , and brainwashed his mom and sister into believing the same. they were obvi wrong. boone also believed it for a hot sec , until he saw the outcome with his own eyes. this is something very few people know about bc he'd rather die than openly admit he was dumb.

HE lost his entire family pretty early on , like probably a year after the initial outbreak. all of them voluntarily got infected, except for his wife ( who was a few months pregnant at the time ). she unfortunately was attacked by one of the cult members and suffered a pretty gruesome end, which still weighs heavy on boone from time to time bc he wasn't able to protect her or their baby.

HIS sanity was teetertottering for a while after that, coming to terms with his loss of family and also basically everything he was raised to believe. traveling across the country in search of a safe place with some semblance of normalcy, boone ended up doing some horrific things for a couple years in the name of survival.

THE tides turned when he eventually joined forces with a group of people, setting off to find their own safe haven away from the power hungry military bases. he found purpose in his life again, helping a community of everyday civilians survive ; truly feeling as though he was apart of a community again.

FOR the first time in a long time, boone thinks he's in a good place. diligently fulfilling his role as a scout, he lowkey believes wiping out the virus ( one lost soul at a time ) is his way of repenting for blindly following the misguided belief of a looney tunes ' family ' ; a life he's desperately trying to leave behind.

ANYWAY he's kinda kooky but he means well, and is loyal to a fault.

The whole production of SatAm is pretty weird in general. When you look at the many pieces of concept art that has surfaced in the past years it was originally going to look far more different than even those prototype scans from that one STC.

The whole is kind of funny in hindsight because I remember AoSTH being hated back in the day simply because it wasn't as dark or as serious as SatAm. Even though I would argue that AoSTH is closer in spirit to the games at the time compared to SatAm, to the point where I would even say that the show's Robotnik is pretty close to the modern Eggman we eventually got but with the narcism and hamminess turned up to 11.(Alas, we still haven't seen Eggman in a purple bikini, though.)

Like I have a lot of nostalgia towards SatAm, but I was also one of those fans who also liked AoSTH before YouTube Poop made it cool to do, and back when fandoms were far more demanding that people like one or the other or else. So I'm kindaaa getting increasingly annoyed with fans barking at Sega to introduce Sally and the rest of the Freedom Fighters into the games and modern canon(without even taking into consideration how fundamentally different the modern canon/s setting alone is in comparison). Just because SatAm/Archie were the faces of the franchise within at the least the Western fandom during the 90s, when it was far from the only adaptation and interpretation of the character and franchise floating around at the time.

My only experience with AoSTH and SatAM is the Nostalgia Critic review where he shits on the former and worships the latter, so I am familiar with what you said 😂

Admittedly I also remember watching the first episode of AoSTH a lifetime ago and concluding that it wasn't my thing - it felt like Discount Looney Tunes to me. It almost feels like DiC took Sonic 1 and 2, separated the zany, colorful aesthetic and the subtle environmentalist message from each other, and amped both up to 11 for its shows.

But yeah, I suppose that AoSTH was so lowkey and simple that they didn't need to change much about it. You have Sonic being a snarky '90s kid, you have Tails being his cute lil bro (I know of the scene where Tails calls Sonic his whole family, aww), you have Robotnik being a hammy bastard, you have three Badniks from the games, shenanigans ensue. That makes it inherently more faithful to the games of the time.

I don't think the concept of SatAM is bad? It puts emphasis on the environmentalist message (also, it was the '90s, that shit was en vogue back then lmao), it has Robotnik as a dictator to be fought by Sonic, on paper it sounds like a great Sonic adaptation. But I can't say how well it worked with that premise. Apparently not very well due to the main trio being OOC and overshadowed by the OCs, which seems to be a recurring problem with adaptations :P

I wonder how things would have turned out if DiC knew about the existence of Amy and Metal...
