Re-reading Boyfriend Material after a long time. I had forgotten how fucking cute this book is. I adore every character anew. Re-reading Luc and Oliver's disastrous first date with my chin in my hands. They're so adorably awkward. Oliver is the autistic representation we deserve and Luc is the perfect ADHD depression kid. Together they're unstoppable.

“Your…your job?” I asked with all the smoothness of a bowl of granola.

“Ah. Yes. Well, I”—this time, his foot only stroked the side of mine as it jiggled under the table—“specialise in criminal defence. And you might as well get it over with.”

“Get what over with?”

“The question that everyone asks when you tell them you work in criminal defence.”

This felt uncomfortably like failing an exam. In a blind panic, I blurted out the first thing that came into my head. “Do you have sex in the wig?”

Okay, I'm curious! What is this "Boyfriend Material" and "Husband Material" you've been posting about? Have you recently read them? How did you find out about it? Did you love them? I need details. 🤣 I already have Captive Prince on my list... Should I add this next? ♥

Ahh yes! They are two books by author Alexis Hall . . an I heard a third is on the way . . Father Material coming out in 2026

I've read both and loved them . . both men are quite flawed and messy and it is interesting to see how they as two very very different people navigate a whole fake dating situation. There's also a nice band of friends and coworkers that round out the story and add a fun element to it all.

I've kind of known about these books . . besides a friend recommending them to me, I had seen them also in a RWRB FB page I pop onto . . when people were looking for queer romcom/romance type novels in a similar vein to Red White and Royal Blue these books also came up.

Boyfriend Material

Wanted: One (fake) boyfriend Practically perfect in every way

Luc O’Donnell is tangentially—and reluctantly—famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he’s never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad’s making a comeback, Luc’s back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.

To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He’s a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he’s never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common.
