WIP Wednesday + fic drop

I have TWO things for you today. One of them is not actually an WIP, but a little shortie from the Rosethorn girl universe that you can read on AO3 right now! No fancy art because my brain is being Bad Brain right now. Thing 1:

I will also stick stuff about JELLY BABIES (a wee snippet & overly-emotional blather) under the cut. Next chapter with these sweet baby gays should be coming out tonight!

Ch. 10 (!!!!) of Jelly Babies is almost good to go. I THINK I will try to post daily until this bad boi is done?? I have a buffer of about 3-4 chapters, but I am human, so absolutely no guarantees. I do have an outline and a rough idea of where it's going to go, and I hope (DEAR GOD I HOPE) that it'll wrap up before the end of December. We shall see.

Thing 2. Here is a VERY SHORT SNIPPET from tonight's chapter:

“What?” Gregory asks, confused. He squints up at it. There’s some plants there that look familiar, a bunch of leaves with small white berries, wrapped up with a red ribbon. It looks like the stuff he helped Ioanna gather up the other day - 

“That’s.” Swithin clears his throat. “That’s mistletoe.” 

I just want to say a big, sloppy, huge, emotional, tearful, Gregory-esque thank you to everyone who has engaged with this work. Honestly, every time I write something (especially in fandom spaces), my go-to thought is, "This is so weird. This is just a lark. It's okay if no one reads it - I'm just happy that I wrote it and put it out into the world." But then y'all show up waving homemade signs and cheering and crying and Embracing the Weird and I am eternally grateful to exist in this corner of the internet with you.

I mentioned this before in responses to some comments, but I feel like writing and sharing "Jelly Babies" re-set some kind of button in my brain and my body so that I am actually able to experience joy again. And I hope that in some way, it brings you a little bit of joy and warmth and sweetness and the conviction that (as Dr. Chuck Tingle says) Love is Real. We're all just wee humans dealing with this hard shit and trying to make it through the day.

Whether you've been working joyfully or slogging away or unable to make anything at all - whether you're on top of the world or just struggling to make it through the the next minute - you always belong. You always deserve a hug and a hot drink and a rest so that you can sit down and take off your heavy boots.

Carry On Countdown - Day 4: Cake

SOOOOOO, the incredible @larkral offered to make Lego art for the Rosethorn girl universe, and because I am not a fool, I said YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES. 

The Black Forest (Cake) of Death, I Mean Bedtime

Here is my preferred method for experiencing this piece of art:

1.) Set a time for 5 minutes

2.) Put on "Peter and the Wolf"

3.) Click on the image to see it in its full glory

4.) Spend that 5 minutes contemplating this work. Just. Really take in the little details, you know? The colour palette. How Simon has two right arms. The fallen book balanced at an impossible thing. Whatever the fuck Penny is holding. Is it - a wand? A laser gun? A bingo dabber? It's purple, that's what matters. But also what happened to her HAND?? Okay, don't worry about her hand. Just take in this tiny Baz with a guitar for a violin -- and not just any guitar, but clearly an electric guitar with a rad pattern on it. Also check out Simon's FRECKLES and his wee red dragon wings that are like some sort of cape. And the ever so slightly visible scuff marks, so you know these Lego pieces have been well-loved and well-gnawed. And the piece de resistance, this CAKE. Six luscious layers. The tiny green candle at the centre with its pink flame, like it's fairy fire. The icing that is icing but also flowers and maybe snowballs and then some more flowers because as Lady Ruth would say, fuck it, you can never have too many flowers on a cake. Just. Perfection.

4.) Whenever you're feeling low, repeat.

Excerpt from an interview with the artist (aka bb Simon and Uncle Jamby Having a Serious Art Conversation) below the cut!

Q: “So, you’re - you’re on a quest?”

A: “Yes we are on a quest, me and Penny and Baz, Penny says it is a Quest for Cakes and Books. I thought maybe it'd just be for Cake but Penny says that every Quest is a Quest for Knowledge."

Q: “And Penny’s hair is - purple?”

A: “Yes purple is her favourite colour she is going to turn her hair people once she has her own wand, she told me.” 

Q: “Oh-okay. And, um, your pal Baz. He’s looking. A bit peaky, isn’t he?”

A: “Yes because he’s a vampire.” 

Q: “…”

A: (whisper) “It’s only a make-pretend, Uncle Jamby, he isn’t really a vampire.” (Normal voice) “Anyway he’s a good vampire. He only bites people who deserve to be bitten, like that lady who said mean things to you at Gran’s party.” 

Q: (choking) (clearing throat) “And is he. A bard? What’s this little instrument he’s got here?”

A: “It’s his violin. Baz says he doesn’t smile when he plays the violin but he does, I saw it.  Sometimes if I am very quiet he doesn’t notice I am there and I get to listen to him play. He’s very good.”

Q: “And you’ve got. A sword?”

A: “Yes it’s a sword fork because Cake.” 

Q: “Cool.” 

A: “Can we play now?”

Q: “Of course. Do we - should I make a little Lego me?” 

A: “No, you get to be the Cake.”

*The artist's uncle would like to point out that Jamie is short for "James" and not "Jimothy," no matter what his flatmate Lachlan says

Tbh I feel like a lot of people who believe Lucy and Cooper will have a dad-daughter relationship are just placing the Joel-Ellie filter on them because they're another male-female apocalyptic duo and aren't actually considering the characters and where they are in their lives right now. Cooper didn't lose a daughter like Joel did. He has one, who he's currently looking for. There's no daughter-shaped crater in him that needs to be healed. As for Lucy, unlike Ellie, she isn't in need of a father figure in her life. She has a dad, who she had a great relationship with up until the truth was revealed. She is a well adjusted girlie, no daddy issues present. If anything, it's her mother that's the sore spot. Especially considering the fate she had.
