I was recently gifted the Stranger Things coloring book, and naturally, I was looking through it, trying to find a Byler one. I didn't get through the whole book to find out, because I found this little gem, which I am about to post. (It's kind of embarrassing how long I worked on editing this image)
Tumblr media
Here's the unedited picture, just in case my slightly unhinged notes are distracting:
Tumblr media
(They look a little blurry, and I'm not sure if that will go away when I post it, but hopefully you get the point. I don't know why this happens every time I post an image on Tumblr.)
I love how the unreciprocated romantic feelings with Mileven are visible, even in this coloring book (I hope they can find happiness being just friends in season 5, because they both deserve to be content in their relationship).
I don't know who made this, but it is the official Stranger Things coloring book. Byler is so endgame, that even line art of the characters communicates that, lol.

There were a lot of things Mike hated in life.
The demogorgon, and how it had essentially destroyed his life.
 Brenner, and the madhouse laboratory El had survived.
How each and every one of his friends now did something weird--were weird, because flashing lights or fireworks or some stupid tune a toy horse played dragged up memories that made their eyes flat and faces hollow.
Most of all though, Mike hated how much they relied on Steve.
There was no reason he should be the person to call when it started pouring and no one wanted to bike home from AV.
Steve wasn’t Nancy, or Jonathan, or a parent--he wasn’t even dating anyone related to any of the Party anymore so what excuse did he have to keep hanging around?
(Even if Jonathan was always working, and Nancy was always busy with some club or homework, and everyone’s parents all seemed to be in a race of who could get back to normal the fastest…)
They should at least try to get a hold of other people, instead of constantly going to Steve first.
“Why?” Dusitn had scoffed at him the last time this had happened, feeding quarters into a phone and staring at Mike like he was the one being unreasonable. “I’m not gonna waste money just to hear your sister tell us no again when we all know Steve will do it.”
Which was perhaps the most infuriating part of it all.
That Steve would do it.
Show up and help them, even if he bitched the whole time.
Hell, Steve Harrington knew more about Mike’s life offhand than Nancy did, and that made him want to punch a wall more days than it didn’t. Why the hell was Steve so involved?
It was stupid.
Weird, even! They weren’t friends, (even if Dustin and Max and El of all people said the opposite) he wasn’t being paid to babysit, (Mike had double checked; going round to ask Ma Henderson and Mrs. Sinclair, only to get an earful of how wonderful Steve was from both.) he had no reason to hang around!
It didn’t make sense that Steve could be harassed into picking them up from school.
Would take them to get ice cream, or hand over extra quarters for the arcade. He even gave out advice like some kind of--brother that Mike had never wanted.
Above all?
Mike hated that when he needed someone, the number he punched in on automatic was Steve’s.
“I need you to come get me.” He said into the receiver, mad at himself and the world, but mostly mad that beyond the normal amount of squawking Steve did, he shut up and came.
Drove up in his rich boy car, stepping out and herding Mike into it like the rain hadn’t already seeped into his bones.
“You wanna tell me why you snuck into a bar two towns over?” Steve asked, long after Mike had slung himself into the passenger seat, arms crossed defensively over his chest.
“No.”
One of Steve’s hands went right to his hair, running through it before adjusting the mess he’d just made.
It was a nervous habit, and Mike hated that he knew that too.
“Okay, well.” Steve’s hand fell back to the steering wheel, clenching tight around it. “Next time you want to do something dumb could you at least come talk to me about it beforehand?”
“What the hell would that do?” Mike bitched, staring firmly out of the window.
“Not waste my gas for starters.” Steve bitched right back. “But I dunno man, we could have taken some bats and gone and wailed on cars in the junkyard and talked or some shit, not--whatever this all was.”
‘This all’ was accompanied by a wave of his hand, indicating not just the bar Mike had been standing in front of, but his general sopping wet state.
“You’d actually go to the junkyard with me?” Mike challenged, doubtful.
Steve made a face. “Did you lose your hearing in there? I just said--.”
“Why?” Mike interrupted. “Why the fuck would you come out with me?”
Matching his entire aggressive tone, Steve said; “Because it’s better than trying to sneak into the one local gay bar when you’re barely fourteen, Michael.”
And that?
Steve being oddly aware of shit he really shouldn’t have?
Mike hated that too.
“You knew what the bar was?” He asked, his voice coming out much smaller than he intended.
“Everyone knows what that bar is, except it’s more of a biker bar than a gay bar.” Steve shot back--which did actually explain about ten different questions Mike had about the place. “Also, language you little shit.”
Under his breath, Steve continued in a muttered; “I swear I’m going to start carrying around soap.”
“You cuss more than we do.” Mike responded, and if his own voice was a little strangled as he fought back the sudden swell of tears, then that was between him and God.
He was not crying in front of Steve Harrington, he outright refused.
“The point I’m making is that there are way better bars to sneak into. That one’s not nearly as welcoming as people make it out to be, probably because they’re sick of all the rumors.”
Steve seemed to realize what he was implying because he quickly added; “Not that you should be sneaking into any bars at all!”
“You’re not my mom.” Mike’s voice turned wet as he lost his battle with his throat, voice cracking as he failed to choke the tears back.
“No shit Wheeler.”  Steve said, and at least he was good enough not to call attention to Mike’s crying.
If he had, Mike was pretty sure he’d just up and die of embarrassment, right there.
“I don’t get why you care.” He muttered, angrily swiping at his eyes.
“I didn’t keep you alive this long just so you could die of something stupid.” Steve countered easily.
Which was kinda fair, if you thought about it.
Mike very much did not want to think about it.
Any of it.
Ever.
“Are you gonna tell my parents?” He asked after a painfully long moment.
Long enough that Steve had begun fiddling with the radio, trying to find a station as they drove back that wasn’t wailing country or gospel music.
“I’m not a narc, so no.”
“Not about the bar.”
Now Steve just looked confused.
Probably because he was, because he was without a doubt the stupidest almost adult Mike knew.
(Not that he could say that out loud--last time he had, Max had made one of her pissy faces and then El got mad because Max was, which led to a break up, which led to Mike having to beg his way back into his girlfriend’s good graces while explaining that he hadn’t meant it like that.
“How did you mean it then?” Max demanded, and Mike wasn’t sure how he managed to dodge that entire conversation but he had, on grounds that untangling his own emotions regarding stupid Steve made him want to pull his hair out and scream.)
“What about then?”
 “You know. Don’t make me say it.” Mike absolutely didn’t plead, even if it did sort of, kind of, sound like pleading.
Steve flicked his eyes away from the road to give one long, weird look at Mike. The same one he gave Dustin when he went off on a rant about Cerebro or Lucas when he started discussing the stats of different D&D weapons.
Unlike those times, Steve’s face cleared.
“Oh.” He said, blinking, and Mike could practically see the light bulb flash above his head.
Then;
“Nah.”
Mike waited.
And waited.
And kept waiting as Steve went back to searching through radio channels, as if that was the end of the conversation.
It couldn't be the end of this conversation.
Not when this was the part that was eating Mike alive.
He didn’t know if this was Steve repressing it on purpose or if this was what he had to look forward to for the rest of his life if he kept trying to figure his own head out, but either way, he knew he had a choice to make.
To let the unspoken part of today die quietly. Go unsaid, and remain unsaid, for all eternity--or he could let it out.
Shove the “gay” part of “gay bar” in Steve’s stupid, jock face.
Make him acknowledge it, even if it got Mike kicked out of the car, and who cared if it did?
Steve wasn’t the person who should have picked him up anyway.
The anger climbed higher and higher in his chest, tears and rage combining until Mike spat it all out, furious.
“You’re not going to ask if I’m gay?”
Steve didn’t turn to face him, but Mike saw his eyebrow cocking anyway, given how he was currently glaring a hole in the side of the older teen’s head.
“Do you want me to?”
“No.” Mike bit out automatically. “Yes. I don’t know!”
Steve’s hand found its way back into his hair.
“Okay then.” Steve paused, clearly fishing for something to say.
Gleefully, Mike watched him struggle.
“Do you like guys?” He managed finally, looking like he was navigating a minefield more than just talking.
“I don’t know.” Mike stressed, sinking lower in his seat. “Why do you think I was at the bar? I was trying to figure it out!”
“Honestly I assumed this was some sort of stupid dare--but!” Steve held up a finger, before Mike could interrupt, “But let’s--shit, hold on, I had a speech for this but I kinda wasn’t expecting to use it this soon. Um.”
“You have a speech for me being gay?”
“Not for you.” Steve rolled his eyes. “For--in general! It was an in general, just in case speech!”
He rounded on Mike, for longer than the younger was comfortable with given Steve took his eyes off the road to do it. “Okay--you can like boobies, you can like, uh--not boobies, and that’s fine! It’s all totally fine!”
“You are not making it sound like it’s fine.” Mike said, feeling like he’d been taken out by hearing Steve say the word “boobies.”
Gross, gross, gross.
“Well it is.” Steve said, in a tone that felt like he was two seconds from adding in a smarmy ‘so there!’ at the end.
“But I’m dating El.” Mike whined, which really, was both the heart of the matter and the eye of the storm that had been growing in his head for months now. “I can’t be gay if I like her.”
“Don’t you guys break up and get together like four times a week?”
“No, that's Max and Lucas, El and I are stable.” Mike scoffed. “Or we--we were stable.”
Before he started to have thoughts about people that weren't his girlfriend.
Or women.
“Stable for being in middle school, sure.” Steve snorted. “You don’t just have to like one or the other you know. You can like dudes and chicks at the same time.”
Which Mike did not know, on account of being fourteen.
He did his absolute damndest not to show that realization, instead adding that to the list of reasons why he hated Steve Harrington too.
Steve shouldn't be the one teaching him about who you could like!
“The point is that who you end up loving isn’t a problem.” Steve finally looked back to the road. “Other people might be an issue, and those people we can punch in the face so long as the cops aren’t looking, which isn’t part of the speech so let’s not tell people I said that part, but whatever you do choose, there’s nothing wrong with you.”
Steve’s voice went firm, as he apparently recalled his speech or something close enough to it because his next words sounded a little rehearsed. “You have people who are here for you, no matter what. Okay?”
Oh God, Mike was crying again.
He wanted to punch Steve in his stupid face.
Wanted to hold onto the fury he'd built inside himself. Thrash around, throw himself out of the car, get away from the emotions that felt too big for his chest to contain.
Instead he felt it all break on Steve's acceptance. On word's he didn't know he needed to hear until they'd been spoken, and sniffed out a quiet; “Okay.”
Steve of course had to take it too far by reaching over and patting his knee, which they both regretted judging by how quickly Steve took his hand back and the face Mike made at his hand--but it…
It was appreciated, even amongst all Mike's rage.
Steve was appreciated.
Not that Mike would ever, on pain of death, tell him that.
Neither said a word for a while, Steve finally landing on a radio that was playing some Top 40 hit, Tears for Fears singing about ruling the world while Mike found himself trying to rebuild his own once again, tired of it having shattered so many times over.
At least he finally felt better, even if he refused to admit Steve was the reason for it.
He wasn’t quite done though.
 There was a piece Steve had skipped over, that Mike felt was critically important, if only because it was partly the reason he was having thoughts about being gay in the first place.
He had to know if Steve saw it too.
That it wasn’t just him and his stupid head, making up things that weren’t there.
“Hey Steve?”
“Yeah?”
“Who was the speech for?”
Steve sighed.
“Rule one of the whole queer thing Wheeler, you don’t out other people.”
Like there were written rules or something.
(Maybe there were, it wasn't like Mike knew.)
“Was it Will?” Mike asked, and pretended like he didn’t desperately want the answer to be yes.
 Steve didn’t say a thing, but the fact he nearly took the car off the road was a pretty solid answer in itself.
“We’re not playing guessing games about other people’s sexualites!” He yelped, hands gripping the steering wheel as Mike felt a wave of relief crash through him.
Will was--maybe, possibly, also--queer too.
Which didn’t make this any better but it--wasn’t the not preferred outcome, either.
(It wasn’t just Mike struggling alone, trying to figure out if his best friend wanted to be more than that, if El was breaking up with him and more and more because she wanted to be less than a girlfriend, if things were changing and he would have no one--)
“I’m not out here picking Will up from a gay bar dipshit, I’m picking you up, and this is your reminder that next time, you should just come talk to me!” Steve ranted.
Mike snorted.
He absolutely hated Steve Harrington, but--
“Fine.” He said, talking so low he could barely be heard. “I will.”
--maybe Mike did have someone in his corner after all.
Even if it was just Steve.
xXx
Bonus:
“Between you and me, that kid is gayer than a two dollar bill.”
“Wow Robin,” Steve teased, “Isn’t that like, a slur or whatever?”
He snickered when she rolled her eyes and threw a roll of stickers his way.
“I’m just saying. Did you see the way he was looking at you when you were showing off your stupid biceps?” Robin said, nudging her shoulder into Steve’s. “Will’s gonna have a rude awakening later if he hasn’t already.”
Steve nudged her back, but kept his gaze on the Party as they trooped their way from Family Video to the arcade next door, the realization that they now had connections for free rentals making them downright gleeful.
Will was the last one in, and Steve watched him hurry so as to not be left behind.
He didn’t like to worry about the dipshits, but Robin was just putting voice to a thought Steve knew he wasn’t the first person to have.
And if he noticed it, then it didn't exactly bode well as being kept a secret.
“Should we like…talk to him about that?” He asked after a long moment, turning to face Robin.
“Us?” She pointed at herself, before turning her finger on Steve. “Why us?”
“Well you’re into girls.” He gave her a pointed look, glad that the store was empty of everyone but them so he could actually voice all this. “And I’m fine with it.”
“Yeah I’m sure he wants to know you’re fine with it.” Robin taunted, but she had her thinking face on, eyes out to the middle distance. “I barely know him. You barely know him--he’s the quietest out of all your kids.”
“They’re not my kids.” Steve argued automatically. “They're like a weird cross between shitty siblings and that kid in your class who never leaves you alone.”
A fact Steve no longer took for granted, even if he made it sound like the worst thing ever.
“I just think it’d be nice if he knew that he had people in his corner, you know? Who supported him and shit.”
“Steve, you compared my crush to a muppet, that wasn’t supportive.” Robin countered, but it too was on automatic.
Softer she admitted; “You’re right though. If I had known other queer people, if I had known people would accept me...it would have made things a lot easier.”
A very long pause, in which both of them stewed for a moment, before Robin abruptly slapped her hand down on the table.
“Okay, you got me. We're doing it, and I'm making us a speech.”
“A speech?”
“Yes dingus, a speech. I know you, you’re terrible when you’re put on the spot with this kinda thing, and trust me with things like this the moment will be spontaneous.”
“It’s Will, how spontaneous can it be?” Steve challenged back. “Getting a dinner order out of him is a chore.”
“Stop whining and hand me that notepad. Im telling you its gonna happen when you least expect it and then you're gonna thank me later.”
“It better not happen without you.”  Steve sighed, but passed the notepad over.
God the things he did for those stupid kids.
Bonus x2
Steve would later go on to use the speech on himself, in a gas station bathroom mirror, eyes wide and freaked out after Eddie Munson called him Big Boy in a van they stole, while Robin snickered behind him.
He would turn on her, snapping that she; “Help me with this dammit!”
In return she’d remind him that Tammy might sing like a muppet but Eddie  was the guy who stepped on lunches while giving speeches at lunch and sticking his tongue out, and “Really Steve, I think I won best gay awakening, here.”
Which would promptly start an argument regarding how it wasn’t a competition, which would continue for another fifteen or so odd years before finding its way as a reference into both of their speeches as each other’s best man.
Nancy and Eddie wouldn’t get it at either wedding, but Mike would.

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7
Time passes in ways Eddie doesn’t fully understand, in the aftermath of Steve’s injury.
A few days are spent lounging around the hotel room with Steve drifting in and out of sleep, for the most part. Then they graduate to small day trips. Squeeze in some touristy shit; museums and landmarks not too far from the hotel, in case Steve gets a migraine or starts feeling nauseous.
Day 6 features a follow-up at the hospital, where Steve is told the bandage is no longer necessary to cover the worst of the injury, surgery won’t be necessary, and he’s clear to fly home or wherever else he wants to go. Which means Eddie is also free to leave LA, but he’s already stuck it out this long, so he decides to continue to follow Steve’s lead and spend another day.
He gets a call from Steve before he leaves his hotel room on Day 7, informing him that Max is leading a trip to the beach before they leave California again. Steve insists it’s the least he can do since Lucas flew out to spend the last few days with her, so she could stick around until Steve was clear to travel again.
And that’s how Eddie finds himself wearing lavender board shorts from the surf shop that looked the least like a tourist trap, dousing himself with an entire bottle of the highest SPF he can find before stepping out of the store. His black ripped jeans and the Judas Priest shirt he’d worn, not anticipating a trip to the beach, are folded into the bottom of a large tote Robin is carrying with ease, as she picks out towels for everyone to lounge on. She catches sight of him and raises an eyebrow, but he holds his hand up to stop any commentary.
“Black is just going to make me burn even more than I’m already going to burn, and the blue pair I liked were the wrong size, so lavender it is.” He defends, but she just shrugs at him, keeps smiling and walks over to pay for the towels and her bathing suit.
Behind Eddie, Lucas clears his throat. He spins to find Steve, blushing and glaring at Lucas, who’s grinning.
“What? Don’t tell me I need to defend the trunks to you guys, too. I thought you’d be on my side.” He whines.
“Oh, I don’t think Steve has any issue with your shorts. Or lack of a top.” Lucas teases, then laughs as Steve swings a soft punch into his shoulder.
“I just…” Steve trails off, turning his attention back to Eddie and Eddie can see the heat rise from Steve’s cheeks up to the tips of his ears, coloring him a soft shade of pink. “I didn’t realize how many tattoos you actually have, I guess.” He eventually settles on, before immediately occupying himself with finding sunscreen.
Eddie lets it slide, and they all pay for what they need, before crossing the street and trekking toward the water. Max is the first to toss her shorts and sandals into a pile, running toward the ocean and diving into the first wave she encounters. Lucas is just a step behind her, and he’s quick to catch her waist and throw the two of them back into the water just as she’s resurfacing.
Robin shoves a rented umbrella into the sand and Eddie helps expand it, as Steve lays out his towel so his face is covered by the umbrella’s shade, but his torso down is exposed to the sun. Eddie, on the other hand, huddles up so most of his body is concealed by the umbrella.
“Oh shit, dude, I didn’t even think to ask. Are you worried about getting seen out here or something?” Steve asks, and Eddie frowns. It takes a moment before he realizes it probably seems like he’s hiding from any potential paparazzi.
“I get bothered so little by media that I hadn’t even thought about that if I’m being honest.” Eddie shakes his head but smiles at how thoughtful Steve is. “I’m just a little too pasty to trust the sun on a cloudy day, so direct exposure like this always makes me nervous. But I like laying in the sand and I’m happy you wanted me to tag along. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” he assures Steve, who smiles at him until Robin mocks a gagging noise and makes them both blush and look away from one another.
The salt air and crescendo of waves and bellowing laughter kick up a surprising amount of inspiration for Eddie, and he fishes his phone out of Robin’s bag, typing away while she and Steve sunbathe.
He’s so caught up in the piece he’s working out that he doesn’t realize anyone has spoken to him until Steve’s pressing a hand to his knee, looking a little concerned.
“What? Sorry, I got an idea and I had to get it out before I forgot about it.” He mumbles, typing out his final thoughts before giving Steve his full attention.
“We’re going to return the umbrella and grab food before heading back to the hotel to pack up, if you’re hungry?” Steve asks, smiling at Eddie. He looks back at his phone to realize their hour with the rented umbrella is nearly up, so he nods and helps clean up the space they’d taken over, before they find a beachfront restaurant that doesn’t mind that none of the guys are wearing shirts, or that Max’s hair is still dripping wet, leaving a trail behind her as they move to their seats.
Once they’ve eaten, they go back to the hotel. Eddie asks if he can shower to get the sand out of his hair before he changes back into the clothes he’d had on pre-trip to the beach. When he re-enters the room, almost everything is packed up and Robin is on the balcony, talking on the phone.
“Nancy called,” Steve explains from the sofa, as Eddie flops beside him, towel-drying his hair gently. He hadn’t bothered to put his shirt on yet, not wanting his hair to make it all wet while it air dries. “Did they hurt?”
“Hm?” Eddie’s confused instantly, looking at Steve before realizing he’s eyeing the tattoos across his chest. “Some of ‘em more than others, yeah. But it’s a good kind of hurt.”  Eddie explains, and Steve frowns, but that’s okay because Eddie knows not everyone gets what he means whenever he explains the tattooing experience like that. “It’s… kinda like if you have itchy sunburn and you accidentally scratch it? It feels good to have scratched it, but it also hurts.” When Steve still looks confused, it’s Eddie’s turn to frown. He looks over Steve’s exposed arms and takes in the soft golden color they’ve turned and his eyes narrow. “Do not tell me you’re one of those genetic anomalies that doesn’t sunburn and always has a perfect tan, Stevie.”
Now Steve is grinning, throwing a shrug in Eddie’s direction. “Blame it on the 8 years of swim club during the summer off-season.” Steve laughs as an explanation, and Eddie instantly wants to know more about everything Steve has ever done in his life, but doesn’t know where to draw the line at how much is too much to ask to know, so he ultimately doesn’t ask for any further information. Which is fine, because Steve is leaning closer and taking hold of his left forearm, twisting it and tracing a finger along a snake that wraps around his skin. “Do they have meanings?”
“Some of them, yeah. Some of them I just got because I liked how they look.” Eddie admits, watching Steve’s fingers trace along the delicate lines of the snake. “That one’s got its mouth open like it’s hissing and about to bite.” Eddie considers what comes next, and decides to just lay it all out on the table. Steve had been open and honest with him, Eddie could return the favor. “Snakes are supposed to be a symbol of inner strength and perseverance, and they look sick. I got it after my first stint in rehab.”
Steve doesn’t falter, doesn’t even blink, and if Eddie didn’t know better, he would think Steve had already known about his trips to rehab before he’d said anything. Instead, he moves on to trace a blackout band around Eddie’s bicep. “Do any of them have stories you want to share? You don’t have to if it’s too personal.”
He’s stunned to silence for a moment, something that doesn’t often happen to Eddie. But he’s so used to everyone pressing to hear more about rehab and addiction and recovery that his brain physically needs a moment to catch up to Steve. “Oh. Uh. I mean, the one you’re touching doesn’t have a meaning or story, I just liked how it looks.” Eddie thinks for a moment, then, before he holds out the inside of his right forearm. “This one is a puppet master. Master of Puppets is my favorite Metallica song, and when I learned to play it is when I realized that music could actually be a career path for me.” They run through a few other tattoos; the Wyvern, the spider, the “you bow to no one” in elvish down his spine. While still working up the courage to tell Steve more, he switches his approach. “Do you have any tattoos? Or have you ever wanted any?”
“I’ve never thought about it in a serious way, because I’m not sure I’d like having something on me permanently like that.” Steve shrugs, flipping his arm over to point at his right wrist. “The few times I’ve thought about it, it’s been like. A robin, here. The Roman numerals for 94 somewhere. That kind of stuff.”
Eddie smiles softly, nods. “It’s adorable that you’d want one for Robin.” He teases and lets the moment breathe for a moment before he circles back to the tattoo of the snake. “I’m not ashamed of my story, or my history, but we hadn’t really talked about, you know. That aspect of things, yet. But, I mean. I made terrible choices when I was younger, and I got in over my head with drugs harder than I realized. And it’s happened more than once. And I’m not naive enough to think I’m magically cured because drugs haven’t raised an issue for me over the last few years. But I’ve been mostly sober for almost 4 years.”
“Mostly?” Steve asks, concern clear in how softly he speaks, and Eddie can’t help but grin and shrug a little.
“Still some weed sometimes. Still drink beer sometimes. Both in moderation, not anything out of control. It, uh, probably sounds weird but those weren’t substances I had issues with, so I don’t… I don’t really think about drinking or smoking as cheating, but I know some programs would call it that way.” He shrugs, and Steve nods, processing the information.
“Well, thanks for sharing that with me. I know it’s probably not easy to talk about, but. I learned a few new things about you today.” He offers with a little smile, and Eddie nods back. They slip back into silence, until Robin slips back into the room, looking between the two of them expectantly.
“Did you ask him?” She asks, and when Eddie turns his attention to Steve, he flushes.
“No, I uh…” He trails off, picking at a fingernail before looking up at Eddie, then back down at his hands. “We’re flying back to Chicago tomorrow, and we were wondering if you had your plans set for heading back to Nashville?”
“Oh, yeah. When you guys initially said you’d be leaving tomorrow, I booked a flight home for tomorrow afternoon.” He says and watches Steve’s lack of reaction. Wonders if he should have asked about joining them in Chicago until Steve gives an awkward smile.
“Right, that makes sense.” He nods. “Well, we can all head to the airport together, at least?”
“Yeah, sure.” Eddie agrees, turning to look at Robin in the hopes of finding an explanation, but she turns away to take her turn in the shower, leaving Steve and Eddie together on the sofa.
~~~
Gareth picks Eddie up from the airport once he’s touched down in Nashville, and they head back to his house. Eddie throws himself into the comfort of his sofa, huddling up to a pillow with the intention of taking a nap, but his phone buzzes in his pocket. When he fishes it out, he smiles.
Stevie: Dustin has taken over the apartment, but we’re home. Hope you got home safe, too.
“Why are you smiling?” Gareth asks as Eddie is typing out his response.
“I’m not smiling,” Eddie responds instantly, schooling his expression and shoving his phone back in his pocket.
“Oh, so Steve texted you,” Gareth says, matter-of-factly, before scrolling on his own phone. “Want to order food? I’m hungry and you don’t have anything edible.”
“Why do you assume Steve texted me?” Eddie asks, frowning and sitting up straighter.
Gareth raises his eyebrow and glances over his phone at Eddie before he sighs. “Because you were making that face you’ve been making for the last month every time you text him, and you just got home from a week with him, so obviously he’s texting you again. Your turn to answer; food?”
Eddie stares at Gareth for a moment, watches as he turns his phone around to face Eddie, showing off the Uber Eats screen, before he scoffs and takes the phone to place his order. Before he hands it back to Gareth, though, he holds it just out of his reach. “What face am I making?”
“C’mon, Eddie, don’t play dumb.” Gareth laughs, but Eddie frowns deeper. Gareth frowns back, then. “You really haven’t put it together?”
“Put what together?” Eddie asks, finally handing Gareth his phone back. Gareth takes it, but doesn’t look away from Eddie until he answers.
“Dude, you’re in love with him.” He says, like it’s obvious, before going about placing his own order.
Eddie thinks for a moment. He knows he has feelings for Steve; finds him attractive and interesting and definitely wants to see if something is there. But to know that his friends can see through him puts him on edge, makes him defensive. “I’m not in love with him, we’re just friends.”
“Eddie,” Gareth laughs before he sees the serious look on Eddie’s face and he sighs. “Look, man. I’m not trying to start a fight or make you spiral or anything. I’m just saying. You leaned into a TikTok trend for him, voluntarily learned about the sport he plays, helped nurse him back to health after he got hurt and spent an extra week in LA to be with him longer. And now you’re texting him, again, like you did after we left Chicago. There’s something there, whether you want to admit it or not. Maybe it’s not love yet, but that’s where it’s heading.”
Silence settles over them, just the sound of Gareth’s short nails tapping against the screen of his phone, for a long moment. Eddie processes what he’s said, thinks it over, before flipping back to the text messages from Steve. He reads the words over and over before he decides on an answer.
Eddie: Glad you’re home safe. Miss you already.
He doesn’t have to wait long for a response, as Steve answers no more than two minutes later.
Steve: I miss you already, too, Eds.
Eddie considers responding but decides to tuck the phone back into his pocket instead. He drums his fingers against his knee, settling into a melody before he nudges Gareth’s leg with his foot.
“Wanna help me set up the studio downstairs while we wait for the food?”
Gareth meets his look, raising an eyebrow. “Inspiration strikes over Steve Harrington?”
“I’ve got, like, four different ideas I started fleshing out in LA without instruments,” Eddie answers instead and ignores the smug look on Gareth’s face as they stand and make their way to the basement Eddie converted into a recording studio to get it ready while their food is delivered.
max doesn't have a bad dynamic on the show. lucas? believable teenage romance and somehow still smth so profound and tender. cutest & funniest. facilitate growth in each other and look at each other with those big eyes... dustin? better off as friends done right. no duo funnier. mike? two cats hissing at each other. foils due to their similarities. they get the same haircut at least once in their lives. billy? devastating exploration of the vicious cycle of abuse and grief that blooms, still, after everything. el? pov you're like the only female peer around and you have some Opinions and you're immediately ready to support whatever move she makes but also you're a teenager not a therapist so you do the best you can to be a friend, to help her be her own person. the abiding bond you develop along the way is probably just collateral. steve? there is no one easier to steamroll than some only child who's stuck with you. nancy? teaches felonies, won't stop until you're safe but understands more than anyone the need to put yourself in harm's way to say the buck stops with me.
can just put that girl in a room with any other character and there will be something so compelling about it.
UPDATE ON UPSIDEDOWNSCOOP
PLEASE BOOST! You can find the original post here: https://www.tumblr.com/miaoumeowmiaw/775597673969582080/can-i-trust-these-new-leaks
Upsidedownscoop is an account on Twitter that contributed to the sexual exploitation of many girls, 17 and younger. One of these girls was my close friend, Lauren.
New information has been found, to try and make you understand why this is so urgent for me.
Upsidedownscoop is currently run by a 21 year old man. His first name is Tim. His birthday is December 11, 2003. He is from the Netherlands.
Last year, the co-owner of Upsidedownscoop (Sam, 18) exchanged photos of the Stranger Things 5 set for nude photos of Lauren. When she made Tim aware of this, he laughed and allowed it to continue. It was later revealed that this was done to multiple girls, as young as 10.
Upsidedownscoop is now claiming that I, as well as other people who were present, am lying about what happened. I would never lie about something like this. I made sure to take as many screenshots as I could, and I still find more today. I'm a victim myself.
I only want this grown, disgusting man, who has a history of misogyny outside of this situation, to lose the power and easy access to vulnerable children and women that his Stranger Things account gives him.
Please help me!
#38 "i was eavesdropping and i heard something i can’t scrub from my memory" sounds like it could be very funny, especially from a kid's perspective!
you read my mind, it 100% needs be a kid POV, sorry this one is a bit shorter than my usual but it was fun to write. *it actually ended up being longer than I thought cause I have a problem with not knowing when enough is enough lol* ♡
find the request game here
Lucas was going to throw up. He liked to think he had a strong stomach, he really truly did, but this was too much even for him.
“What the hell is your problem?” Max asked him as he came back to Steve’s living room.
“Yea you look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Will pipes up, head leaning on his knee.
Lucas swallowed dryly, he had to phrase this carefully. “Well I was eavesdropping…”
Max snorted from her seat on the couch. “You Lucas Sinclair was eavesdropping? Didn’t think I’d ever see the day. What about the whole ‘respect people’s boundaries’ thing you rave about?”
“And I still stand by that! It’s just I didn’t want to interrupt and…” Lucas thought back to a few minutes ago. He had gone into the kitchen to grab Max an ice pack; she was having a bad hip day. When he had reached the door, he had heard Steve and Eddie talking, and it had sounded serious. Lucas felt bad about interrupting, but he also couldn’t go back to Max without the ice pack. They had been good for months now, and he didn’t want to risk it. (He knew this was ridiculous considering they weren’t really that dysfunctional, and she loved him, a reluctant secret smile confession on her end. But there was this deep part of Lucas who was terrified of disappointing her). So he was content with waiting outside the door until they were done.
Lucas really should have turned around and left.
“What if they don’t…want to be around us Stevie?” Eddie whispered.
“Baby they are just kids. They are good kids. They are our friends. They won’t be upset.” Steve murmured back.
This was the point Lucas should have turned around, but he was confused and wanted to understand.
“You aren’t even the slightest bit worried, that maybe they won’t be accepting? I don’t think any of them have been exposed to gay culture, let alone two men dating?”
Oh. Oh no. This was really private. Lucas should have really turned around but at that point, his feet were glued to the ground.
“I mean yea a little bit…they are shitheads. Especially Mike—“ Lucas had to hold back a snort, “—but they are good. It’s why we are friends with them. As much as it pains me to admit we are friends with children.”
Lucas wished he could see their faces.
“What if…what if they are more than shitheads this time?” Lucas had never heard Eddie’s voice sound so small.
“…do you want to wait a little longer?” Steve’s voice asked gently, with no anger.
“If that’s okay. I just…want to live in our bubble a little longer. Well our bubble plus Robin.” Lucas imagined Eddie biting his hair in that moment.
“Yea baby. We take this at the pace you need. And Robin already knows, which is pretty much the only person I can’t keep a secret from. And I like our little bubble too.” Lucas heard shuffling around, like fabric reaching around itself.
“Yea?”
“Yea. I think I can go a little longer without the twerps making gagging noises every time we kiss. We can wait to tell them we’re together.”
“Hmmmm should we do a practice show right now, to prepare for when we need to freak them out?” Eddie’s voice turned suddenly flirty.
“I like the way you think.” This was the last words Lucas heard before the sounds of the two of them clearly heavily making out came through the doorway. It was at the first moan that Lucas ran away.
Lucas was brought back to reality when Max snapped her fingers in his face. “Want to share with the class loser?”
Oh god, Lucas was gonna throw up at the memory.
It wasn’t the fact that they were men and that they were dating. Lucas was, in fact, really happy for them. He had never thought about it, but in a weird way, it made sense. He wanted them to be happy. And if he was really being honest with himself, he was hoping maybe this would get Max to stop staring at Steve when he doesn’t have a shirt on (a few months later, Lucas would be horribly proven wrong of this theory).
It wasn’t this kissing that made him want to vomit either. Sure, the idea of his older brother figure making out with his dungeon master wasn’t a pleasant thought, but he had witness Mike make out with El, so he was pretty immune to grossness.
No, the problem was Lucas realized with great certainty he was going to have to keep a secret.
He gagged at the thought.
Sure, he could keep a whole other dimension and government conspiracy theory a secret from his parents (and, ya know, the world), but he caved relatively quickly when it came to Max. And Max could tell whenever he was lying. But Lucas wasn’t stupid; he knew you couldn’t just tell other people that someone you know is gay. He didn't know the word for it, maybe there wasn’t one, but Lucas knew what it was like to be different. He didn’t want to make Steve and Eddie feel bad, or cause others to be mean to them. He didn’t think the rest of the party would care about the gay? Bisexual? Queer?—wait, that’s a bad word, Lucas thought—it didn’t matter what specifically, but he didn’t think they would care about the gay stuff—more like Lucas knew his friends. El and Max would have a million, invasive questions. Mike would be a dick, but not for serious reasons. More like “I have weird insecurities” reasons. It would probably be good for Will (again, Lucas isn’t stupid). And Dustin, holy shit, he would most definitely either be pissed he didn’t know sooner, or would rub it in everyone’s face that he made it happen. Both of which Lucas knew would be horrible reactions.
God, he was going to throw up. He was going to lie to his friends. His girlfriend. He couldn’t just share this secret. It would go horrible if he told, it’s not his secret! His stupid, stupid friends (not El and Max) would blow up if it came from him first. And then Eddie and Steve would be upset, he told, and they would think that the party hated them for something out of their control, even though they love them no matter what! And oh god, he’s gonna have to lie so much—
He was spiraling, he needed to calm down.
“Lucas?” Max’s face suddenly softened, like she knew he was having a hard time getting the words together. Lucas looked at her face, and took a couple of seconds to count her freckles but lost track quickly. He didn’t mind; he would to start again later. He followed the laugh lines around her eyes that weren’t there last year, and thought about trying to make her laugh.
Max said nothing as he stared, even as the guys pressed him to answer. It was strange, he was terrified of lying to Max, but he knew deep down she would understand. That she would know he was lying but wouldn’t call him out on it.
“I was eavesdropping and I heard something I can’t erase from my memory. I almost walked in on Steve giving sex advice to Eddie, so I walked away before it got gross. I forgot your ice pack; I’m sorry.” Lucas apologized; he did genuinely feel bad he didn’t succeed on his mission.
The guys started chattering behind him, asking questions and yelling out in disgust, but Max stayed quiet for a second, then said, “It’s okay, stalker. Didn’t have high hopes for you anyway. You always get distracted.”
Lucas sent her a grateful smile, and pretended to be offended. “Are you saying I don’t finish what I’ve started? You should know better, Max.”
Max threw her head back, and full body laughed. She scooped Lucas’ hand and wove her pale fingers between his. “That’s me being nice, Lucas. Don’t go around telling people that. Or I’ll have to up the ante.”
Lucas kissed the back of her hand and whispered, “Maybe I like it when you’re a little mean.”
Max blushed and looked to check if the guys were paying attention (they weren’t; they were still arguing over sex they weren’t having), and leaned over to give him a soft kiss on the cheek. Max didn’t ask any questions even though Lucas knew she knew he was lying.
Lucas didn’t let go of her hand, and quietly hoped that Eddie made Steve feel the way Max made him feel.
He deserved something special like that.
**
I need you guys to know that I had to keep backtracking to correct boys into guys, cause I’m so used to writing from an older persons perspective. But I wanted some steddie and lumax mixed together. And Lucas! Deserves! More! Attention!!!
thank you so much for the ask I had so much fun with this one.
Fun little thought (cause I like Mike angst)
You know how in season 2 Vacna\001\Henry was possessing Will and spying? And how he didn't not recognize the doctor or Joyce (Will's fucking mother)? But, he recognized Mike, even knew they were friends.
In season 3 we have "The week is long. The silver cat feeds when blue meets yellow in the west." In regards to season 4, it's implying that Vecna was waiting for Mike to meet up with Wil specifically in Californa to do any real damage (Sure, he killed Chrissy that night, but Mike was gone by the time anything was reported or any more killings happened.)
Several times Lumax is paralleled with Byler. Max and Mike are shown to be very similar even with M names that have two syllables and get shortened to one syllable with very little exception.
Now, I'm not saying that Mike has been in Vecna's way this whole time and is deemed a target for getting Vecna'd. But I'm not not saying that. I'm just saying that the facts line up a bit too well. Mike was always there, making plans and preventing as much of Vecna's damage as he could with what little information he had. He hasn't cried since season 2 (canonically years ago) which is odd because every member of the og Party and even some outside have fucking sobbed their eyes out in season 4.
How fitting would it be for Mike to get saved from Vecna and the Upside Down for once? I'm pretty sure that, at some point, Will's actor had mentioned something along the lines of Will having always leaned on Mike and I think it'd make a lot of sense for, in a season where Mike is said to change a lot, him to lean onto someone else for once. In a way he hasn't since he was fucking 13. (Still angsty about Mike's singular breakdown in the whole show omg)
Some believed that there were invisible strings that tied you to your soulmate no matter where they were in the world. No matter what, you would find your soulmate at some point in your life, and fall in love. No one really believed this theory, until there were enough reports of enough people seeing them. The only catch you could only see your strings when your soulmate died.
Steve didn't believe in them though, he thought it was dumb. After all of his failed dates and relationships, it was easier to believe that soulmates just weren't real. That way he wouldn't get excited when he started dating someone new, and less hurt when it came to an end.
"Maybe you just haven't found the right person yet," Robin would say, secretly hoping that she would find the person on the other end of the string. But Steve still thought it was better to just stop believing.
That was until he saw the strings for the first time. At first, it was so fast that he barely even noticed it. Just a small string of red that showed up on Robin's finger as he helped her down the Creel House stairs. He didn't think anything of it really, until it happened again.
When he, Nancy, and Robin were walking back to the trailer, he saw the strings again, just for a flash. A short red string connects Robin and Nancy's pinkies. Looking down just in time, he saw his own red string tied around his right pinky, severed, before it disappeared again.
Fear built in Steve's chest. He thought he was crazy, that this was just some upside down hallucination. But he can't get rid of the feeling that this is real, that his soulmate is dying before he can ever get the chance to love them.
When the three of them find Dustin crying over Eddie's body, Steve forgets all of it for a moment. Just worrying about getting Eddie out, and keeping him alive.
They get him to a hospital right before he flatlines. Eddie is rushed to the emergency room as soon as he is resuscitated, but not before Steve is met with a sea of red.
String tangled and stretched all over the hospital. Tying themself to people in the waiting rooms, their strings running down the hallways and through the doors. The doctor's red strings leave the hospital doors, making their way down the street. But Steve's is left severed again.
He doesn't see the strings for another hour until he does for a full two minutes. Looking down at the severed string on his finger, he can't help but think that he'll see this string forever. That he spent so long believing that soulmates weren't real, he didn't even notice that he found it.
Glancing over at Robin, he sees her string cross the room to where Nancy is sitting with Lucas in Dustin. Lucas's runs down the hall to where Max is, and Dustin's goes to what Steve can only think is Utah.
Within the blink of an eye, the strings disappear again and stay that way, leaving Steve with the knowledge that soulmate's are real, and his is alive.
if anyone wants to do anything thing with this, be my guest. might do a longer version of this myself, but lord knows when I'll have time to do so.
Byler quote of the day:
*On a "double date" at the movies with Max and Lucas. Will puts his hand on his neck*
Mike: Hey.
Will: *Gasps*
Mike: You okay?
Will: Yeah.
Mike: Are you sure?
Will: Of course.
(This scene was full of lip glances, btw. Also, I love how Mike was able to sense Will's distress despite it not being obvious. And Lucas and Max didn't notice, just Mike.)
Elumax headcanons?
WOAH it's been a while let's go
you will see both platonic and romantic hopclair in this because i enjoy both. you might also see contradicting hc's or things that make no sense since it's the 80's and for that i say shhhhhh
el - they/she, demigirl lesbian max - they/she/he, genderfluid bisexual lucas - she/he, nonbinary omnisexual
LOVE cuddles. love cuddles too much. an annoying amount. they will not be near each other without tucking into each other
will complain about pda of other people while laying on top of each other bc shhh shut up
el asks them out first by going up to the two of them and going "im in love with max, and max is in love with both of us."
max is shocked that el somehow confessed for him but they quickly figure things out
go to rojancy for advice in the beginning. nancy talks to max, el talks to robin, lucas talks to jonathan
they help a LOT with sharing a partner and jealousy and how it worked for jonathan and robin platonically
generally the agreement in the beginning was that they're both max's partners and that evolved from there
if romantic hopclair, max sees lucas and el slowly fall in love but neither of them notice until at some point max calls el lucas's girlfriend and they just don't correct her because "huh, i guess they are my girlfriend. anyways"
if platonic hopclair, they slowly learn that they are also partners, just not romantically. talking to robin helped a lot.
"yeah, jonny is my partner, just like stevie is. i don't like them romantically, and i really don't want to kiss them, but they're my partners in life either way. we do all the other stuff, like hanging out and living together and spending our lives together, we just don't want the romantic parts."
el and lucas are just as important to each other as max is to them, and they don't need to be romantic life partners to be life partners. they're spending their lives together and they're one of each other's favorite people. they just don't necessarily have to kiss on the mouth.
speaking of kisses though, they all love non mouth kisses. theyre really annoying about it
cheek kisses, wrist/hand kisses, forehead kisses, kisses on the earlobe. if they're nuzzling into each other they'll plant a kiss wherever they're nuzzling into.
will, mike, and dustin are all like "you are legally not allowed to call us annoying around our partners"
because byler and duzie are gross but they are so much less pda inclined than these three are
the three of them aren't very words of affirmations inclined. they don't speak a lot of soft words around each other, but it doesn't matter. they all know
they do like leaving notes to each other though, especially if one has to go somewhere before the other wakes up/comes home to see them
it usually just involves telling them how their day was or something so if by the time they return the other is gone/asleep, they can just respond with a note to keep up the talk
love languages: physical touch, quality time, gifts
they love getting each other trinkets. "this reminds me of you." "i thought you'd like this <3" "here's a dandelion, make a wish!" tiny little things that brighten each other's days
MENACE on any gift giving holidays. it's household warfare on who gets the best gift for the others. most gift giving related holidays, they spread it out where they each get a day to show off their gifts because of how extra they are. on christmas they do not give each other gifts the day of and focus on spending time with other friends and family, usually giving it to each other three days before or after.
lucas and el have the most pet names for each other, especially platonic hopclair. no one understands.
"love, i need help!" "max, i think el is calling you" "no, that's for lucas" "coming darling!"
yes, they are girlfriends. yes, max and lucas are man-adjacent. no, they will not elaborate.
l: "i'm also girl-adjacent." m: "sometimes, me too." e: "i'm always girl adjacent!"
el and lucas are obsessed with max's short hair. they love playing with it so much
mike is the biggest hater of elumax ever because wdym my ex chose knock off me and my best friend.
"first, you're knock off max. second, you're gay, mike." "it's the principle of it lucas. also fuck you."
okay i'll shut up now
The last day of 1989
Billy wakes up after a long night of drinking and reminiscing about his newfound friendships. He glances at the black book on his table and Steve, who is asleep on the couch.
Billy begins to flip the pages of the journal Steve bought for him and readies to hold his pen.
Writing has become Billy's refuge, and he has learned to open up, especially when things get tough.
As much as Lucas, Mike and Will empathise with Billy's plight, he can't help but feel sorry for himself, thinking of the skirmish he almost had with Lucas when they first met.
However, as of now, all is good. Lucas often asks Max about Billy and sometimes joins him for swims, which Billy often uses to cope with his daily stress.
It was through that year that Billy slowly saw a change in himself. He is no longer the person who tries to put on a tough front, even when things aren't going well.
Billy has finally learned to speak up with Steve's help. It is hard, but he is still trying. Sometimes, it is okay to ask for help—it has become a daily reminder that Billy is trying to grasp while not returning to his old ways of concealing his struggles. Billy glances at his watch, flips over the last blank page of his journal and begins journalling his thoughts. When he is done, Steve wakes up.
Although the journal is one of Billy's personal possessions, Steve respectfully and curiously inquired, "Mind if I take a look?"
"Sure," Billy smiled and looked at Steve. A warmth spreads through him as though welcoming Steve into his memories encapsulated in the journal.
Steve begins to flip the pages of Billy's journal. The journal was a canvas of the struggles and turmoil he faced within himself in moments when he tried to open himself to others or cope with his daily life.
In the midst of it all, there are light-hearted moments, such as the fishing trip he had last summer with Lucas, Max, Eddie and Chrissy. Laughter and gasps filled the room while Billy and Steve read the journal.
After reading the last page of Billy's journal, Steve sheds a tear with a genuine smile on his face. "Billy, this is beautiful. I'm proud of the person you've become, ever since when we first met."
Billy gives Steve a hug. It was the tightest, warmest, and longest hug Steve had ever felt. As they walked out of the house, beers in hand, they clinked their bottles as the clock struck midnight.
1990. The start of a new year.
"Here's many more with you," Steve smiled. "Never stop changing for yourself."
Billy nods. He gulps his beer, looking at the stars. As the fireworks filled the sky, Billy and Steve welcomed the year with a newfound joy and gratitude, hopeful of what the new year would bring for them.
Listen, I understand that different people have different opinions on different stuff and I respect that, or at least try to, but something I'm never gonna understand is the fact why people who ship Jancy hate Stancy or the other way around.
Both of the ships are beautiful in their own places, about Stancy, they have the most alluring chemistry in the whole show (along with Lumax) and about the individuals, Steve will never ever love anyone as much as he loves Nancy (I mean romantically, cause we all know how much he loves Rob and Dustin) and about Nancy, she will never be able to love anyone as much as she loves Steve.
Now about Jancy, they are two halves of a whole, they complete each other completely. Yes, they might bicker a lot and disagree with each other, but at the end of the day they try to figure out their own mistakes, step out of their comfort zones and try to understand the other's point of view and I think that's beautiful.
I honestly prefer Jancy over Stancy because even though I know Steve loves Nancy more than Jonathan does, I think Jonathan's there to make Nancy identify her mistakes whereas Steve will apologize even if Nancy was at fault, but it doesn't mean I don't like Steve or even think he is wrong, cause he's the loml and I will never think that! He just doesn't want to live without Nance so he wants to fix it regardless of who's fault that is and that is also beautiful.
And I honestly do not want Nancy to repeat the same mistake again and choose one over the other again, plus personally, Jancy feels like home to me so yeah.
