Cinderella's Castle, and Costume

too many of you liked my liveblogging ramble so here's a slightly more structured analysis of the costumes in CC after finishing the show, with (hopefully) no typos.

I'm mostly (see: pretty much only) talking about colour symbolism, because that's my favourite thing to talk about, and this is deeply self-indulgent.

The ensemble, right from the start, wear brighter colours - pinks and reds and purples in their pseudo-medieval attire. My eye was drawn immediately to Lauren's hot pink blouse, for one. This is interesting - why not choose more accurate neutrals? Easy: to engage the audience. This isn't naturalism, we don't want accuracy, we want appeal. The costumes are more fairytale than history and that is exactly what the show is going for. (But still, there are neutral colours too, blending the two, keeping our medieval inspiration)

The Narrator is perhaps the most traditionally accurate - bar eyeliner. It doesn't draw attention, he does that with his voice, because of course he does - he is the Narrator, he's not meant to stand out.

(Honorable mention to his audience participation gag and the direct acknowledgement of the cast/band, we all love a lacking 4th wall)

And now onto our titular character, Ella Ashmore. Her signature colour is green throughout the play (contrasting with the more pink/purple ensemble). Green, of course, links to nature, and life, and growth - fitting for a hero, especially one with ties to magic. Her green changes throughout the play, contrasting or complimenting those around her, helping to exemplify her character arc.

And, honestly, green is a wonderful choice for Bryce specifically, it suits her absolutely perfectly.

Originally, she is desaturated and patched up, a pale dull green over off-white and brown. Even so, her patches are appealling to the eye, lovingly embroidered with even rows, as if she's put time into them. Her pockets are hand sewn on, and she looks remarkably put-together. We know immediately her resillience. She has a small silver pendant, not quite showy, that she never takes off. An oak leaf, that will prove relevant.

The Griswald girls allow her to be a more confident, darker green, with a brighter white, and the three in their saturated dresses compliment each other perfectly. She doesn't match the two, sure, but they work, and she looks at home. Her dress is neatly constructed, not over the top, but classy. We can see both how much she loves her friends - which is central to the play - and how she misses her old life. She really is a "flower in bloom".

(And as an appreciator of stylised theatre I have to give a shout to the onstage quick change, because I love having the cubbies right there for the audience to see)

Now. Her starlight gown had my jaw on the floor. This is when we see her silver really come into the forefront (after her pendant becomes important!!), sequins all over. It's tasteful, but is so much more than we have seen from her until now. She is coming into her own. The construction is much more complicated, an actual ballgown, no longer understated. And she no longer compliments her friend's gowns, now stolen by her step-sisters. She upstages them, but she also makes them look overly saturated by being herself adorned with a beautiful pale mint. She looks ethereal.

She ends the play a confident dark green again, honouring her friends, and demonstrating her conviction and her power as the new queen. She finally adopts gold into her colour scheme, the riches of her newfound royalty, but it is never the focus, and it retains her connection to nature through its soft shapes and leaf-like adornments. The fabric is soft, and construction makes her look like a medieval queen, but it is never too showy. She is a new kind of queen, powerful and kind, magical. She keeps her pendant.

The Prince, vulgar and egocentric, is her foil, the opposite kind of royalty, bright reds and purples, gold instead of silver, and always extravagant. Her silver is tasteful and usually sparing, a benign magic, his gold is ostentatious and overused, a demonstration of greed. Her green is natural and gentle, never particularly bright, his red and purple is always too much, arrogant even. She's complimented by pure whites and neutral browns, and he is almost overpowered by deep blacks - not necessarily evil, but overly rich, and the opposite of pure. Even down to their geometry, she is all soft shapes and lovingly intricate stitching, he is adorned with polygons and exaggerated silhouettes. He serves as an opposite to Ella, showing us everything she isn't.

Tadius has both colour schemes, but understated. He starts with the Prince's red peeking through his sleeves - almost hiding his service to him, and ends with a desaturated, but green tinted, tunic. His original gold accents are almost nothing, he resents the Prince's showiness, and chooses a much more casual look for Ella's service, matching her directly at the end, to display his true loyalty.

And the puppets have to get a mention, despite my lack of expertise in the area, because they are a staple of the production. Only the troll heads are made to disguise the human actors - in demonstration of their inhumanity - and the rest highlight them. Sir Hop-a-lot and Crumb in particular, are beautiful puppets in their own right, but Jon and Joey are still shown, even interacting with Ella themselves in certain moments. This play is intentionally self aware, and uses this to further its characters and narrative. It's truly wonderful to see.
