After The Blood of Youth, I’m trying to figure out what to watch next 😭
Started and watched 2 episodes of Moonshine. Fun and fast pace. Adore the FL but found the ML irritating despite his cool intro.  He’s a stickler for rules in a way that’s annoying and ignorant, not in an endearing way like say Xiao Chong in The Blood of Youth. And so far, I find the SML Crown Prince more intriguing.
Started and watched 4 episodes of The Golden Spoon. Intriguing, but I’m also getting a case of SML where the SML is way more endearing than the ML.  He has so much trauma and such a manipulative and abusive family. And he gets jerk around by the ML and his golden spoon into situations the SML has no knowledge of and didn’t ask for, rips in and out of a loving family that he longs for and cherishes, then will probably have to deal with whatever consequences the ML left behind for him when the ML was /him/. Also don’t want to read English sub at the moment.
Yes, yes, yes both MLs will probably grow with the story and learn to care about more important things/have their priorities shift, but at the moment, they’re just giving off major I-want-to-either-slap-them-or-punch-them-in-the-face vibe.
Started a bit of the first episode for Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist season 2, but while I like the main characters and the clinic fam, I miss the case-by-case with the political fighting only in the background more than the right in your face political infight that season 2 is starting with right off the bat. I’m not really in the mood for political infighting right now.
Finished maybe the first two episodes of Unchained Love, but again, not in the mood for political and court/palace drama
Watched the first 8 episodes of Song of the Moon with my mom, but I don’t care enough about the story or the either main characters to want to continue.
Kind of the same with Light Chaser Rescue. I know it should give the same slice of live vibe like You Are My Hero/ You Are My City and Fortress, but so far not as endearing although I do like the second couple here better. The ML’s face makeup is just too white that’s it’s distracting.
Bossy Husband Who Loved Me & Secretary Bai Wants to Resign Everyday - started a bit of both yesterday, but not in the mood to read English Sub and they’re both too comedic and silly at the moment for me.
I’m in the mood a mystery solving drama, something similar to The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty or The Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty and so far Luoyang is giving me that vibe for the moment. Let’s hope my interest remains and nothing irritates too much like Moonshine and The Golden Spoon for the moment.

I just started watching Legend of Ruyi with my mom and she enjoys it. She REALLY prefers shows with lots of historically accurate details, including historical attitudes. That means no pining after the Emperor like a modern woman and expecting monogamy, essentially, which is the reason we had to stop Empress of China. Her favorites are Story of Yanxi Palace, Longest Day in Chang'an, and Goryeo-Khitan War, and Legend of Ruyi might also end up up there - she's enjoying it so far. Any other recommendations? I'm thinking Luoyang after we finish Ruyi but idk.
That depends how not modern she wants - Luoyang has a female policewoman (or equivalent) as one of the mains and I am pretty sure it was not a thing. If that's not an issue, then it's great!
CDRAMAS
Three Kingdoms 2010 is great at feeling period appropriate though there are very few female characters if that is an issue for your mother.
The Advisors Alliance is wonderful, does not have anachronistic attitudes towards either morality or polygamy but more prominent roles for women than Three Kingdoms.
The Story of Han Dynasty (2005) and The Legend of Chu and Han (also known as The King's War) from 2012 also feel period appropriate - the former is old so looks it but vvv solid and the latter is wonderful and that cast!
Any of the Qin Empire series (there are three) would fit the bill.
I've heard amazing things about Legend of Zhen Huan and I peeked at it and it looked very good, but I don't really do most harem dramas so I haven't watched it in full.
In general, because I am not a harem drama person, the recs I gave are more battle/politics/dude heavy so I am gonna throw this ask open to my mutuals who do watch harem dramas for more recs.
KDRAMAS
Most of these are gonna be somewhat older because clearly what your mom likes are traditional sageuks and those are sadly not made much any more.
If your mom liked GK War, then may I recommend King of Tears Lee Bang Won. It's by the same screenwriter, and has the same "adult people doing adult things in period appropriate manner" vibe. Not a pretty boy in sight.
Six Flying Dragons also deals with Lee Bang Won and is one of my favorite period dramas of all time. It's quite epic, has a huge cast of characters, more prominent female roles than King of Tears and to me feels period appropriate enough (no royals yearn for monogamy.)
Tree with Deep Roots - same people who did SFD, this one centers sort of on creation of written Korean alphabet and is not at all boring, surprisingly enough. It's actually intense and heartbreaking and very adult.
The Nokdu Flower - I am in the middle of it but from what I've heard it does not go off the rails. It's set during the Peasant Revolution in 1894-95 and centers around three main characters - a female trader, an illegitimate son of a noble family who's an enforcer, and a legitimate noble heir who goes down a dark path. It's grim and not at all court adjacent so may not be your mom's bag but it would quailfy otherwise.
Empress Ki - this is the closest I've seen a kdrama do a harem cdrama and it's glorious. There is harem and murders and what not and it's definitely female centric and does not feel modern to me (the emperor may be obsessed with the eventual Empress Ki - and historically he appeared to be so as well - but he has plenty of other wives.)
All the good older traditional sageuks about monarchs or their families - Jumong, Lee San Wind of the Palace, Queen Seon Duk, Dong Yi.
Slave Hunters - once again, not royalty centric at all, more dealing with dregs of society, but it's smart and adult and doesn't feel particularly anachronistic to me (the attitudes to slavery feel so tragically realistic.)
Bossam: Steal the Fate - it deals with the custom of kidnapping widows so they could remarry and is surprisingly gritty and real feeling with a lovely romance in it.
Haechi - it follows Yeongjo when he was still a prince. It's a bit of a mystery/investigative thing.
Damo - a police captain, a tea lady and a rebel leader all get entangled in a conspiracy. It's so grim and amazing and heartbreaking.
Conspiracy in the Court - a grownup mystery during Jeongjo's reign.
Eight Days - also set during Jeongjo's reign and centering around assassination attempts on the king. So smart.
My Dearest - it's set during the Qing invasion of Korea and not at all royalty adjacent in terms of the mains though the king and his heir are prominent supporting characters but the attitudes felt so period appropriate - class attitudes, attitudes towards women losing their honor etc. It was my favorite drama last year.

pardon me i'm just overwhelmed by wang yibo (as usual)
It's just, this kid, THIS KID, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND LET ME EXPLAIN
— he has to battle his way up through the ranks of YG to get to debut, in another country, away from his parents, while barely a teenager, all while learning a second language, and he not only does it, but according to legend he and Lisa are the only two foreign idols in YG history to graduate the program with all As
— and then his debut gets canceled and he has to go back to China and Yuehua and restart his entire career without much support at all from his agency, and he just does it, he starts the grind all over and just fucking does it
— he isn't even Yuehua's first choice for Day Day Up's new host competition, and they submit him only because he speaks Korean and that's good for the show, but then Wang Han sees him backstage one day and sees how hard he's working on his dance routine and immediately knows that Yibo is their next host, and not only is he an incredible addition to the show, but he stays on DDU longer than he reasonably should given how massively famous he gets, and he's so beloved that when he returns for Hunan's 2022 NYE concert, the network rolls out the red carpet and treats him like he's their hometown son and Wang Han is like, "Our Yibo has come home" (And Luoyang is the girlfriend in the distracted boyfriend meme lol but ykwim)
— he has to submit his comp shots twice just to even get an audition before anyone takes him seriously for The Untamed!! Except then the moment they see him, they immediately know he's their Lan Zhan
— he's the "pretty idol" throwaway captain for SDC3 and you can tell this when you watch the editing for the first episode because the comments for Yibo are all about how hot he is, and he comes in last place after the first captain's dance, and it's clear nobody really takes him seriously, but then the second he opens his street auditions, the tone of the entire show changes and from then on, for the next two seasons, he is completely unstoppable, his talent and intelligence and strategic thinking and competitive drive are so raw and exciting to watch that he basically takes over the entire show, the ratings more than double from s2 to s3, his fandom grows even more massive, and the dancers all fucking LOVE HIM. like dude he wins street dance of china so hard that within three seasons he's basically co-producing it and he's literally given a writing credit.
— The director of Being a Hero doesn't think he's old or mature enough to play Chen Yu and then Yibo sits down and talks to him about why he wants the role and the director realizes that Yibo basically is Chen Yu, he's the focused hard-working persevering single-minded actor of his dreams, and Yibo winds up giving a performance so moving it makes the director cry and declare, "That? That's acting."
— he jumps from no ranking at all to 9th place to #2!!!!!! within TWO YEARS on the Forbes China 100 Most Powerful people list between 2019 and 2021
— Duhua famously didn't take him seriously or treat him well for most of their long contractual relationship, oh shit, because now according to YH's latest investor report for Q3-4 2022, he singlehandedly brings in 90% of the profit for her entire company, a shareholder, the "top talent," and the one who has to pay whenever Uniq gets together because he's "the boss"
— Yibo goes from being the SDC underdog to being so respected that when Da Peng is looking for a dancer to star in his street dance movie, he asks all the best street dancers what actor is capable of doing the moves, and they all unanimously tell him: Wang Yibo. Da Peng winds up telling the press on Weibo Film night 2022 that he wrote the whole movie for Yibo, and that "if there's no Yibo, there's no movie"
— Cheng Er, director of Wuming, claims he has no idea who Yibo is, and just decided to cast him in a supporting role in his film because he looks the part of a Republic-era spy. And then he sees Yibo act, and he sees Yibo immerse himself in the part, and he sees how hard Yibo is willing to work and how committed he is, and he rewrites his entire movie until Wang Yibo is the main fucking character; Wang Yibo, in his first major film debut, acts his way into the lead and earns rave reviews from across the globe, including the goddamn new york times
Every time you think people will have finally figured out that you do not underestimate Wang Yibo, you learn of some new example where Yibo, once again, has had to prove himself in an industry that perpetually writes him off and doesn't take him seriously at first — only for the people around him to be absolutely blown away by his talent and dedication and mesmerizing star power.
And this happens over and over and over again. And he just does the work, always, every time, without complaint, and every time the result is something surprising and unexpected and fantastic and such a mark of his incredible passion and talent
— and every time I think my heart can't possibly grow any more sizes over Yibo, he proves me wrong

Oh hey, why are we going away from the drama? I want to see how that arc ends, why are we focusing on a kitchen-
Wait.
What are they making???
Watching this, never have I been more convinced that one of the directors is a frustrated cook, unable to fulfil their dreams of running a restaurant and instead forced to languish in dramaland. There are gratuitous shots of hands, bubbling pots and pans, and a beautiful mise-en-place.
Looking at the food you can almost taste it.
...I'm so hungry, forget the plot, give me the food!
Here are some gifs of food (WARNING do not look at when hungry!)
The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty | A League Nobleman | The Legend of Shen Li | Royal Feast masterlist first set second set | Love Me, Love My Voice | Luoyang | What If | New Life Begins | Delicacies Destiny first set second set | Eat Drink Man Woman gifset2 | The Long Ballad
Huge thanks to @guzhuangheaven, @shijiujun, @ladynamie,
@moononmyfloor, @movielosophy, and @yingtan for your work in making the gifsets!
Write-ins, propaganda, and images are welcome!

oh i haven’t posted about this here. how wei ruolai’s speech on WoF episode 10 went viral and as posted by douyin right now it’s #4 on their hot list. knowing how competitive that platform is, i’m surprised it went this high. considering the topic too and tbh not the usual hot trend you would see on douyin! <3
War of Faith’s golden words set off the local cultural tourism screen | Users are shouting about their hometown.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to those who haven’t watched the show or haven’t reach episode 10 yet, it’s a short audio cut from that speech that is being used where his character says this about 🇨🇳: the barren land you see, as long as you give it time and patience, i’m sure it will grow into an economic field that can support the world.
so cities are using that to showcase their places, that this is what china has grown into. i saw the WoF weibo account reposting ones who Luoyang ( so freakin pretty omg bobo’s hometown is something else! ), Hebei and Beijing. yibo is out here being a cultural ambassador 🤍
sidenote, isome people ( small amount and haters ofc ) are criticizing the speech and how the delivery is “amateur.” but that’s the whole point. the context is ruolai and everyone was in so much pressure cause tunan was not there so he had to go up and speak impromptu. a 23 y/o with almost no experience, using his master’s words, pleading to that mostly greedy crowd. it is meant to be unpolished but full of heart. you can hear it. yibo is the best. that’s all. bye.

Another Tang Dynasty beauty.
Not 100% happy with the skirt. The guaze fabric unravels if you stare at it hard, and it's slippery to sew _and_ to keep on her chest. I do love the color and the tiny pattern. *sigh*
I'm happy with the dotted Swiss short jacket. It, too, has raveling issues but not as badly as the skirt fabric.
I may have to switch to cotton fabrics. Poly guaze keeps disappointing me.
Tumblr media
Her hair was inspired by Song Yi's hairstyle in LuoYang. If you haven't seen it, go watch!

Hello rbs, what ggdd dramas/movies are must watch in your opinion?
(I am sorry if you already answered this question before 🥺 I am new here and I the search function doesn't work very well)
Hi new turtle! 💛🐢💛
I have a post with GG and DD's projects here.
In terms of what I feel are must-see... I think ideally we should try to watch them all. It's their body of work, after all.
I could also answer that question in various ways depending on why I think it's valuable to see various projects. For example, I recommend fans watch Oath of Love even though I totally loathed it (my full review is still in drafts), because I feel anyone interested in GG's career trajectory would find it interesting.
However, I'll answer this from the perspective of you wanting to start out with the most enjoyable projects.
DD must-see projects*
*Assuming you've already seen The Untamed - if not, GO WATCH IT NOW.
Hidden Blade
SDOC3
Being a Hero
Luoyang
GG must-see projects
Our Song
The Youth Memories
The Wolf
That can get you started, but like I said, I hope fans will watch them all. It's a goal of mine as a fan to have seen and be very familiar with all of their work.
Ace Troops (haven't seen all of it yet but my sister is a prolific C-drama watcher and massive GG stan and she says it's his best of any project he's done - second only to The Untamed)
Sunshine By My Side is widely loved, although I haven't seen it yet.
I also answered this question a while back, but less comprehensively, for anyone who's curious.
As a new turtle you might also find my masterlist post helpful.

Nobody's Secret Diary [Date: 5/18/15]
Bam! A bolt of white lightning flashed across the sky, pitched black and cloudy.
Guanlin Temple, Luoyang, China.
Amid the darkness of night, men in grey suits are tirelessly digging up something from beneath the ground of the temple compound. The Marquis de Gramont, simply and distantly, watches along.
Mr. Nobody quietly observes by the side, his expression not moving an inch while his pet Cerberus loyally guards him. The fact that the human Tracker hasn't spoken out of turn yet shows how much stabbing his hand had worked.
As if on cue, Chidi, the Marquis' trustworthy ghost bodyguard, approaches his superior with a nod and a report: the coffin has finally been raised.
Pak! The coffin that was closed for 1800 years is now opened. Mr. Nobody looks away out of respect (embarrassment) for a second, but soon turns his head back towards the subject in front of them.
This is the corpse of Guan Yu, the famous military general of the Three Kingdoms period, a paradigm of loyalty and righteousness, whose life was lionised and his achievements glorified that he is deified to this day by the Chinese people as "Guan Di" centuries after his death.
Neither the head nor the body look decomposed. In fact, it remained perfectly intact, its entire face notably looking as red as legends say, at least under whatever amount of illumination the storm lightning provides.
If not for the fact that he had been deified and therefore not rot, these are the signs of someone with the potential of turning into a jiangshi.
Mr. Nobody's journal is right, though the Marquis never doubted it, never doubted his many, many notes would be particularly useful for him on such an occasion.
"Perfect." The Marquis de Gramont declares. Then, all of a sudden, the Marquis bends down his body and bites the corpse's exposed neck.
"Sir!" Chidi calls out in concern, but the Marquis ignores him. Biting until he feels blood dripping down its coarse green robes, he pulls back his fangs and waits for a reaction.
The transformation of the corpse is not unlike anything the Marquis has seen before, but it's still a spectacle to watch. Mr. Nobody looks on in horror.
The corpse stands up on its own, its skin turning into a dead greenish-white, its long fingernails turning into claws and it's teeth turning sharp. It opens its eyes for the first time, its pupils showing a bright silver like moonlight.
Guan Yu has been turned into a jiangshi.
Ringing a handbell, the Marquis orders, "Get out of the coffin."
With a giant leap, the jiangshi hops out of the coffin with ease, impressing the Marquis.
"Good! Very good!" The Marquis laughs. He keeps away the handbell, not wanting the jiangshi to move anyway further, then he asks, "Do you remember who you are?"
The Marquis waits, but the jiangshi doesn't answer, doesn't open its mouth to speak. Mr. Nobody doesn't feel obliged to tell him that, but he knows the Marquis is not stupid and quickly figures that out himself.
"Chicken blood." The Marquis orders. Chidi complies.
When the chicken blood is presented, the Marquis opens Mr. Nobody's journal to a page with a spell on it, takes out an empty paper talisman and traces the illegible calligraphy onto the talisman with the blood before placing it onto the jiangshi's forehead.
"Do you remember who you are?" The Marquis asks again.
Five seconds later, "Who am I?" The jiangshi replies, slowly and monotonously.
"I don't know you, but you are mine now."
Mr. Nobody furrows his eyebrows. His pet Cerberus stirs alert and shifts its attention towards the smell of the Marquis and that unfamiliar corpse.
He told the Marquis of the story of the Oath of the Peach Garden, but of course he will always twist anything good into something sinister for his own agenda. Now, he turns the honourable tale of sworn brotherhood into that of betrayal, something similar to the story of Cain and Abel from the Bible.
"I shall name you, Caine."
OOC Author's Note:
This piece is written from Mr. Nobody's POV. All future writings on Caine's RP blog are intended to be from Mr. Nobody's perspective for the "Creature/Mythology AU". Please feel free to tell me any trigger warnings I should put.
Caine in this AU is Guan Yu whose body was turned into a jiangshi, basically a Chinese hopping zompire. Usually, jiangshi are known for wearing a Qing-dynasty court official's attire, but since Guan Yu originated from the Eastern Han dynasty (about 1400+ years earlier), he would be wearing military armour and hanfu of his time, before the Marquis forces him to wear Western suits.
More lore details on Guan Yu and jiangshi will be dropped later down the road. Just know that many creative liberties are taken. I still try to write as culturally accurate as possible.
It is said that there are actually three tombs for Guan Yu in real life: the Luoyang Guanlin Temple (the location mentioned above) where his head is buried, somewhere in Danyang where his body is buried, and a cenotaph in Chengdu. Due to creative liberties I've taken, his entire body is found in Guanlin Temple.

Joy of Life episode 7 liveblogging
This is my first watch, so don't tell me secrets ;)
The "I'll kill someone" favor conversation is fantastic.
I'll probably offend more than one person by saying this, but the snappy dialogue in ep 2-7 so far feels quite reminiscent of Aaron Sorkin at his height, when West Wing and Sports Night were really humming, plus his script for The Social Network.
The family playing dominos together lmaooooooo
Aw even Second Madam has come around! She's realized that her loser son just needed a big brother who can look out for him
I realize I'm saying aww a lot but the fam stuff is quite good. (I realized this about me with Blossoms in Adversity - I can be very won over by crap family members forming a sort of found/chosen family. When they didn't ever intend to care about each other & stick together, even if they were related, but events in the story make them realize they LIKE each other and WANT to be family.)
Sister Ruoruo out there in all white when they're trying to be sneaky 😭
The emperor's spy network has that city on LOCKDOWN. He knows when you BREATHE WRONG. (This is what the intelligence agency in the Luoyang drama was supposed to be, no wonder aunt empress was so pissed off. She was robbed.)
Holy shit. They go back to the store and it's empty. ML gets to be clever, which is very satisfying.
ML is doubtful about Crown Prince being the one who tried to kill him. idk what the emperor really thinks, he's too cagey. Is Second Prince the real ominious power pulling the strings? Or is the emperor fucking with everyone from start to finish? 🤔
I am loving how taken aback the noblemen are how ML isn't impressed by them
He doesn't give af and just searches all the ladies 😭😂
ML is bored as hell cause he'll just start reciting the greatest hits. This is gonna be a bloodbath
mystery bangs is the Second Prince right????
lmao every time he flumuxes one of the nobles
aha i KNEW IT. SECOND PRINCE!!!! will they be enemies or besties?
"I guess the sword is still faster" 😂😭
come on guys, make friends!
It's funny that I was just talking about the crap intelligence network in Luoyang, when I'm pretty sure actor who plays 2nd Prince was that guy (I am somewhat face blind but he has a memorable look)
the emperor is getting play by play on all the moves his pawns are playing, this is his NHL playoffs
Classic Sorkin, for reference:

Get to know me better tag game
Thanks to @wuxia-vanlifer , @pastelcheckereddreams , and @tiny-breadcrumbs for the tag!
Last song I listened to: That depends: one that I chose, or one that I heard? Because I was in a cafe in Paris this afternoon that started playing “You Sexy Thing” on the soundsystem and almost did a spit-take with my latte. In terms of something I chose, I just put on Patrick Wolf’s “Teignmouth” (the Sundark and Riverlight version) before sitting down to answer these questions because I refused to have that song be my answer. :D
Currently Watching: Getting close(ish) to finishing some group watches of Luoyang and rewatched of Destined and The Untamed, and about to start a watchalong of Immortal Samsara with @eirenical, and on my own I started watching Legend of Shenli and In Blossom, which I put on hold because of travel (and wanting to spend my spare time writing).
Currently obsessed with: It’s still Mysterious Lotus Casebook, and that’s not changing any time soon. :D (it better not, at least! I’m almost 50k into writing what will probably be around a 100k fic for it, so I better keep with this hyperfixation for awhile, lol). I’m still regularly checking AO3 for my other favorite fandoms, but MLC hasn’t left a lot of brain space for other things.
Tagging @athenasdragon @zishuge @yletylyf @rose-tinted-vision @popotobun @xthelastknownsurvivorx (as always, no obligation to do it if you’re tagged, and feel free to consider yourself tagged if you see this! I tried not to tag people I tagged before in a different version of this back in February, so if you don’t see your name here, I’m not ignoring you! <3 )

I have Mysterious Lotus Casebook brain rot, please help me pick my next show.
If I should watch something not on here, tell me.
Lol ran out of options. Also in consideration though are Under the Queen's Umbrella, KinnPorsche, Ghost Bride, and Ashes of Love. I dropped Ashes bc the FL was driving me up the wall, however Luo Yunxi is there so it's maybe worth sticking out out...
