HISTORY

THE BEGINNING

Thebarton Theatre was officially opened on Monday 11 June 1928 by Mayor HS Hatwell Esq and was considered the premier venue for concerts, films and theatre performances in South Australia. Known as the Thebarton Town Hall and Municipal Offices, the building was built by the Thebarton Council at a cost of £30,000. The opening was a grand occasion with residents satisfied that this was a truly modern building with modern conveniences. An elaborate and luxurious theatre, Thebarton featured seating for 2,000 people, a large stage, beautiful proscenium arch and indirect lighting. The theatrical lighting installed in the theatre was regarded as an innovation with “all the colours of the rainbow thrown forth through the protruding cone and rosette ceiling.” The hall was fitted with 2,000 lights; with only about 200 visible, the remainder were used for dissolving and dimming effects. As well as the state-of-the-art lighting, there was a full orchestra and a variety of seating arrangements and rooms for use. A large Assembly Room was used for functions and dancing, and the administrative building included offices and the Council Chambers, as well as the Mayor and Mayoress’ rooms. Another room was set aside for the School for Mothers, a precursor to the Mothers and Babies Health Association. The Dress Circle provided spacious seating with the front section boasting luxurious armchairs with room for two people. Ten boxes to the side of the Stalls were also fitted with armchairs to create Balcony seating on each side of the auditorium. Seating in the stalls was also designed for comfort with specially – constructed chairs finished in gold leather.

ARCHITECTS

Kaberry and Chard of Sydney were the great Architects of Thebarton Town Hall, who also succeeded in reproducing a façade for the Council Chambers that matched Colonel William Light’s Theberton House in England. Kaberry and Chard designed over 57 grand theatres across Australia, however only 6 theatres remain, including:

★ Woodville Town Hall, Woodville, SA ★ Enmore Theatre, Sydney, NSW ★ Odeon Theatre, Norwood, SA ★ Anita’s Theatre, Thirroul, NSW ★ Roxy Theatre, Leeton, NSW ★Montreal Community Theatre, Tumut, NSW

Thebarton Theatre, Woodville Town Hall and the Enmore Theatre in Sydney are the only establishments by these historic architects that remain lively music and concert venues, and are integral to the Australian Entertainment Industry. Woodville Town Hall was also leased and operated by Daniel Clifford as a picture theatre from 1927, with a similar capacity and style as Thebarton Theatre. These venues made ‘the West’ a hub of world-class entertainment in South Australia. This continues today with both historical buildings providing a variety of quality live concerts weekly. The Odeon Theatre in Norwood is now home to the Australian Dance Theatre and others are used as community theatres or cinemas. Thirteen of the other buildings by Kaberry and Chard have been demolished, converted to office spaces or have become derelict.

Days 14-16 of Australia vacation: back in Sydney

On Day 14, we got up early to fly back to Sydney.

There were some nice views out the window of the plane, and we arrived early enough to go to the beach in the afternoon. On our way to the beach, though, we had to make a stop. Brother-in-law had found a Sydney funnelweb spider (which is the world's most venomous kind) in their outdoor shower, so he had captured it in a container to drop off so that the venom could be harvested for use in making the antidote. Eeek!

While we were looking for parking near the beach, I saw what the in-laws called an Australian bush turkey, though eBird calls it an Australian Brushturkey. The beach was pleasant; the others snorkeled and I just enjoyed being in the water for a bit and then did some tidepooling. I think I saw a sea slug! And there were medium-sized lizards called water dragons on some rocks on our way back to the car. It was nice to see some wildlife even in the city!

Unfortunately, right at bedtime I found some "wildlife" in the bedroom: a spider was perched on a corner of a cushion on the bed, and everyone else was already asleep. It was not a venomous spider, but I couldn't sleep with it on the bed, and I didn't want to wake anyone up. It took me a while to gather up all my courage to pick up the cushion from the other end and take it outside. But I did it!

Day 15 was our last day in Australia. We had a bit of a slow start. Sister-in-law had returned to work, and Brother-in-law had a work event in the morning but was joining us for lunch. We took the train (I saw what I think was a female Australasian figbird in a tree near the station) into town and took a little walk along the water in Barangaroo. Then we walked over to the Queen Victoria Building, where we had reserved a table for High Tea service at lunchtime with Brother-in-law; Sister-in-law joined us for a few minutes to say hello on a break from work. The Tea Room is a huge hall with fancy chandeliers, and it feels both silly and luxuriously indulgent to have a meal there. We ate an exquisite array of little sandwiches, pastries, and scones on ornate china, accompanied by tea (decaf Ceylon for me) and sparkling wine.

Afterwards, Wife and I visited the Powerhouse Museum, which had an eclectic mix of exhibitions on various industries, including a section on Indian textiles, a collection of clothing designed by Australian designer Carla Zambatti, and the first train engine to operate in Australia along with 3 restored passenger cars (1st class, 2nd class, and 3rd class).

Then we took the modern commuter rail back, and spent a little while hanging out in a small playground waiting for one of the in-laws to get home since we didn't have a key to the house. While there, I spotted a gray butcherbird, which is a species I hadn't seen yet.

We had a relaxed evening at home. Brother-in-law cooked a scrumptious dinner of risotto, chicken, and broccoli, and we looked at some photos from the trip.

On Day 16, we said goodbye to Sister-in-law before she left for work. We then spent the morning packing; we had to borrow an extra piece of luggage to fit everything. When we were getting ready to leave, I noticed a large bird up in a tree. I unpacked the binoculars to look at it and discovered that it was my first Pied Currawong!

Brother-in-law dropped us off at the airport. He had made arancini (fried risotto balls) from the leftovers from the previous night and put some in a box to bring along, so I had a nice snack on the plane. The flight home was 13 hours long; I dozed for much of it, and it was a good thing I had the arancini because the flight was too turbulent for the flight attendants to serve breakfast before landing! We arrived a few hours before our departure time due to crossing the International Date Line.

All in all, we had a great trip--it really felt like a vacation. I was intrigued to notice how very not interested in the urban sightseeing I felt, but most of the time we weren't in cities, and the scenery, wildlife, and birds were great. Somehow I managed to see at least one new species of bird on each day of the trip!

I don't know if I'll ever get a chance to go back to Tasmania, but if I do, I must find a way to visit Bruny Island for a full-on birdwatching tour.

I'm sorry, I'm not feeling this article. This is how I eat like 75% of the time I make meals at home, same for my friends. In the winter I do like to cook. What else am I doing in NYC when I have SAD? I just want to cook, read, write, and watch movies inside. The rest of the year my meals are mostly whatever odds and ends look good that I can make feel a bit fancy. The meals are balanced, well proportioned, satisfying, and easy. They are also affordable, even when I get quality, "luxury" ingredients, saving me from ordering Uber Eats all the time. I don't have disordered eating, I don't only cook "real meals" when a man is in the picture, I don't Instagram my meals and hashtag them as a flex. I actually hate that this is called #girl dinner when it has so many other names depending on the culture this style of eating is associated with. In America it's jokingly referred to as an adult lunchable or most recently a DIY bistro box. So do I suddenly lose IQ points or uphold the patriarchy because I don't want to slave in a kitchen like a 50's housewife just to feed myself while working full time, doing self care, slacking off when I need, and pursuing my passions? This is dumb. Stop trying to code this as anti-feminist just because a few people made it a corny trend. Shoutout to Sydney Adamu who's meals are probably mostly a well crafted feast of her own design. But that's her job and passion. I'm just trying to be fed.

Audrey was born the last child, she wasn't expected at her mothers age but she wasn't a surprise either because her parents had always talked about having a little girl one day and when Audrey was born, she was everything her parents imagined her to be. As she got older her mother put her in dance classes to wear off her energy but didn't realize she was going to be top of her class in it and would go on to win state and regional championships. All through out high school she was classified as a 'do it all' girl, she was captain of her swim team, cheerleading team, dance team and prom queen.

As she got older however, her brothers pulled away from her, seeing her as the apple of her parents eye seeing as they handed her everything she ever asked for in life. However, the youngest of her brothers remained close to her that was until her parents filed for divorce after her mother had cheated with her fathers best friend. Audrey was fifteen when she and her mother moved to Fairford, her father seeing it be best he raised the boys but however still made sure his daughter had everything she'd need but the mother getting nothing which gave Audrey's mother a bad taste in her mouth towards her daughter.

After High School Audrey went immediately off to college to get her business and financial degree, that was when she met a slightly older man, not by many years but still enough to catch Audrey's eye. She got pregnant with her son at twenty-one years old, the man had decided his career gain was more important so Audrey gave birth to her son, alone. She had been a single mother and still graduated with honors at the top of her class in both areas of her degree. A few years passed, she was out one night and had met the same man that had left her years earlier, had a one night stand and had become pregnant again with the same man's child, she gave birth to her daughter three months ago and while she was pregnant opened her own cookie shop and bought her own house in the suburbs. Both of which her dad helped her out with, giving her lavish gifts and spoiling his grandchildren is the way her dad makes up for sending her off when she was just a teenager.
