I just realized why Rocket gets so pissed at Drax for nearly getting them all killed for revenge in volume 1
He blames himself for not taking Floor and Teefs and just running after Lylla got shot.
"That's no excuse to get everyone else dead along the way" he says, recalling that when he took revenge for one friend it led to two more dying.

This hug is such a big deal tho cause it was the first time they could actually touch and hug…they were always separated by bars. All of them.

I think the most horrible part of batch 89 is how impractical they are. What possible purpose could you wish to achieve from surgically grafting wheels to a walrus or implanting a steel muzzle into a rabbits face? It's just pure sadism. Cruelty for the sake of cruelty. And it's horrifying.

When James Gunn said once more with feeling. He actually meant every single emotion in the spectrum. EVERY SINGLE ONE.

You know what else plays into the sadness of Rocket's backstory?
That he is so small.
He seems so innocent, so pure, so fragile, so open... completely not like the Rocket we know from the previous movies that is strong but also cynical and closed-off. And this small, innocent Rocket is lied to, abused and lost. He attacks only when he's enraged and full of despair.
It's probably a cliche, but Rocket's innocence probably died alongside with Lylla, Teefs and Floor.

This scene from the first movie is so much more emotional after watching the 3rd one. Notice how Rocket flinches for a split second when Drax pets him? It probably was the first physical affection he has received ever since the hug Lyla gave him, before she was shot dead. With all the aggression and roughness he has build up as self protection, nobody ever dared touch him and this is the first time he has opened up, letting his true emotions show and being vulnerable. And instead of laughing about him like the high evolutionary did after (supposedly this time) losing a friend, no, Drax goes up to him and comforts him. It must have been this moment for Rocket where he realized, that these people genuinely cared for him and he could trust them

At the end of the first Guardians movie when Drax is comforting Rocket after Groot died, it probably reminded him of when Lylla comforted him since that’s the first and last time he ever received some form of comfort. It was also the first time anyone ever comforted him after the loss of a friend. And for Drax it was also the first time that he got to be in a fatherly role again. Now Drax gets to be a dad again to a bunch of kids in need and Rocket gets to be surrounded by his friends/family all the time, which is such a great full circle ending.

After watching GOTG vol 3 for a second time, I wanna take a minute to talk about Rocket and Lylla’s relationship. I believe Lylla is Rocket’s mother figure. Hear me out, because I know a lot of you will disagree, especially since their relationship was romantic in the comics.
But as with the rest of mcu, there can be big changes from the source material and Lylla going from a love interest to a mother figure can totally be one of them. Hell, it actually wouldn’t be the first time either considering Alexi was Natasha’s husband in the comics and now father in the mcu.
Back to Lylla and Rocket though, I really think they made this change intentionally and wanted the audience to see her in that motherly light. Her dialogue, her tone, all of her mannerisms actually are incredibly nurturing. I mean, just their first interaction itself sets up this mother figure idea. Lylla is introduced to a frightened, literal baby and immediately starts to soothe him, almost cooing, in a way that a mom would for a crying baby. Lylla then essentially licks his wounds and cleans Rocket up.
Of course Teefs and Floor were also welcoming and sweet but not in the same way as Lylla; they were excited for a new friend and were ready to accept him as their own (they also had more childlike personalities themselves), but Lylla was more calm and tried to help Rocket adjust to the situation emotionally. From there on, she literally raises Rocket. As Lylla said herself, there are hands that guide you, and for all of Rocket’s time growing up, she was the one guiding him. She was his biggest comfort and source of love, and she was his biggest supporter too.
She taught him, not in the ways the High Evolutionary did, but rather socially and emotionally. Lylla is the one who lifted him up, encouraged him, and was beyond proud of him. The scene where they hug right after Rocket breaks them out, reminds me of a mother who is so proud of what her baby grew up to accomplish. Even in the after life scene, Lylla’s physical affection was platonic and once again, her showing she’s proud of him. Even the words, “my beloved raccoon” sounded like a mother’s love and admiration for her child.
And to me, once you realize what Lylla really was to Rocket, her murder is infinitely worse. Because not only she die right before his eyes, but he spent the rest of his life blaming himself for his mother’s death.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.3 SPOILERS:
The scene where Lylla, Floor, and Teefs die is just so gut wrenching, and SOO well done and I need to talk about it because even though there’s a thousand screaming-after-someone-dies scenes out there, this feels different. it isn’t just another typical slow motion 😱NOOOooooOo!! Rocket is just a baby and so are Lylla and Teefs and Floor. Rocket does not know what to do. He just stands there, paralyzed by horror and this insane, sudden loss. After a moment all he can do is just stand there and scream. Because what else can he do. It feels so raw. He’s just a little baby and he’s horrified and heartbroken and he’s just mocked for it. Good job, Bradley Cooper and everyone else who was a part of making this scene. Incredible scene. I have never hated a villain the way I hate the High Evolutionary.

Rocket: *is extremely entertained by the separation of people from their mechanical prostheses, laughs his ass off every time*
also Rocket: *grew up surrounded by friends with cybernetic enhancements that could not be removed, has intrinsic mechanical parts himself, is likely so amused and delighted because the concept of separating the biological and the biomechanical is deeply strange and surprising to him (because he couldn't take them out if he wanted to)*
Nebula: *goes to great lengths to get Rocket Bucky's metal arm for Christmas because she--more than anyone--understands and relates to this (as someone who also feels more machine than person and marvels at separated prostheses and how people can endure without them)*
