Finished S3 of House of Anubis:

Thoughts:

- The season was not as bad, I think I still prefer S1 & S2, not because the originals are in it (i.e. Nina and Amber) but for me in S3 the pacing lagged a bit, it had a rough beginning (the adjustment period of Nina’s exit) but I enjoyed the Descendents bit and the 5 sinners bit. But at times the pacing lagging in between. Whereas S1 & S2, I didn’t feel that way, I was hooked and binging.

- Walfie are cute, I still prefer Amfie though. I know Willow and Alfie are the healthier couple and will more likely work in the long run, but I find Amber and Alfie more entertaining to watch as a fan. The writers put less effort into Willow and Alfie than they did with Willow/Jerome so that’s a shame. Walfie is that couple that I’d want if this was real life, but Amfie I just find more entertaining.

- This season made me really dislike Peddie. And Patricia deserved better. So I loved Peddie in S2, not as much as Fabina, I think that will always be my #1, but I enjoyed them and got why fans like them. Then in S3, they just ruined them, had them break up for no reason and even when they were together they never felt like a couple. And I hated how Patricia - an original character was relegated to a love interest/damsel in distress for most of the season. Like that was her arc for the season. In S2, Peddie was probably more about Patricia, then in S3 it was all about Eddie. Not Patricia. And I honestly just think they split them up so KT could have most of her scenes with Eddie and Peddie splitting up would explain why Eddie isn’t with Patricia or confiding in her all the time.

- So Fabian becoming a Sinner was pure dumbass Fabian, but Sinner Fabian was great. I think out of all the Sibuna Sinners, Brad and Alex really killed it at being evil whereas with Jade, it didn’t feel as natural. Like Jade has vastly improved her acting since S1 but Sinner!Patricia for me exposed some of her weaknesses. I didn’t feel as if it played to her strengths.

- I think I ship Jeroy? Honestly I will probably ship Jara and Jeroy but boy did they make a mess of it. I think it’s a shame how they ruined Jara so quickly in order for Jeroy and considering how they spent 2 seasons building Jara up, you’d think they wouldn’t split them up until the end of the season or the next if there was one. And it be done without the cheating. As for Jeroy they could have dedicated more time to them. For me that storyline felt a bit quick and would have liked that to take up most the season.

- Mabian? Wtf? I’m not gonna attack folks if they ship it. Because on paper they should work. However, that scene, hinting at them felt forced as fuck. Now there is a scenario where they could work, if there was more of a build. But it just makes no sense. Obviously since everyone lives together, we are told they all are friends and have a friendship with each other - but you need evidence if you are gonna sell characters as a couple or as best friends. Across the 3 seasons Mara and Fabian have shared the least scenes together. You could have at least this season shown more of a friendship together. It’s like how at the beginning of S3 everyone is like Fabian and Eddie are best friends - there was no evidence of that in S2.

- Also I think Mabian are one of those couples that would work (with better writing and not rushed and random), but not for the long term, I think they are too similar. Like I think they’d be that couple that would transition into friends without realising it.

- KT needs to chill out. She literally took everything like a personal attack. Like when Eddie thought she was a Sinner because he saw her be turned and no one knew she had the key. She at times just constantly looked like someone hurt her personally. Comparing her to Nina, since she did come in to fill the Nina hole. — She was definitely a better actress that Nathalia, but to me she wasn’t one of the strongest and had some weak spots. There were times I enjoyed her and times where she just had pure dumbass energy about her.

The annual Year 8 Science Fair was officially underway, and Mara had been working tirelessly to complete her project—“How Much Iron is in YOUR Cereal?”—the whole term. Trial and error, after trial and error, she’d finally been able to extract the metal from the breakfast cereal. This, of course, was no thanks to Fabian.

About two nights ago, Mara had stayed late at school to try puréeing the mixture of Corn Flakes™ and purified water again to get it right. Unbeknownst to her, however, Fabian Rutter was also staying late to get the final few art supplies he needed from Mrs. Burton for his poster.

Why I still ship Fabina in 2020

1. The entirety of season 1

2. The fact that Fabian was rather unbothered by Joy’s disappearance in s1 which made the insinuation that they were dating prior to Nina arriving make 0 sense as Brad pointed out

3. The fact that....Joy really was messed up in season 2. And I don’t blame her. I blame the writers (to an extent, I still am grateful the show even exits), and the fact that it was hard to tackle such adult topics on a Nickelodeon show especially in the early 2010s. I love Joy, for what she could have been. If they had really really explored her trauma, it would have been so cool. Instead the villianized her for like, the whole season until the last 4 episodes? Whack. I get that they broke up Fabian and Nina and had Joy interject for *drama* but anyone who watched season 1 knew that Fabian was nuts about Nina and vise versa. If anything, I wish they had that *drama* for a few episodes but then Fabian and Nina got back together in the middle of the season, and Joy joined Sibuna sooner. Her and Nina would have made an excellent team.

A deeper look into Joy in season 2...I liked that Brad defended her on that podcast because really she’s not a monster, but she did do some...horrible things. She took out her frustrations on Nina, even though- Nina didn’t do anything to her. It wasn’t Nina’s fault that The Society got it wrong about Joy being chosen. It wasn’t Nina’s fault that Fabian developed feelings for her. It wasn’t Nina’s fault for any of it. So in the 70th or so episode when Joy publishes that article bullying Nina to the point of accusing her of abandoning her grandmother in hospital, I mean, WTF. Let’s not forget that Nina, who’s not only got schoolwork, she also has this quest, the task of being The Chosen One, the relationship drama with Fabian, her grandmother WHO IS HER SOLE CARETAKER BECAUSE SHE LITERALLY HAS NO PARENTS was sick- that is SO much to deal with. It kind of bothers me when people say Nina was dramatic or annoying. Was she perfect? No. But considering all that she goes through, you would think Joy could find some compassion for her because Joy has similar trauma. But I understand trauma can make you do some awful things. And let’s just address this once and only once: Joy tricking Fabian into kissing her because he thought she was Nina was sexual assault. Reverse the gender roles in that scenario and everyone would be up in arms. She doesn’t get a pass for that. But as awful as those things were, I don’t hate Joy...but I personally don’t like the idea that her and Fabian should have gotten together in season 3 or maybe somewhere down the line. Why? Because to me...Joy’s infatuation with Fabian is a reminder of those awful things she did. How far she went in hurting others just so they would be out of the way. It reminds me of Joy at her lowest. And I think that in order for Joy to grow as a person, she needed to move on from Fabian. She needed to find herself, be with herself and find someone who accepted her, flaws included. (Jerome.) To me if Joy and Fabian got together in s3 or down the line, it would imply that maybe Joy didn’t learn anything from her mistakes, and that shouldn’t be the case at all. So I’m glad they didn’t go down that road. And that’s just my take, you are more than welcome to disagree!

4. My stubborn childhood nostalgia. This show aired when I was in middle school AKA the most traumatic years ever and this show was my serotonin it was all I had and Fabina was one of my first OTPs. I love them, I always will. Have I mentioned how adorable they are in s1?

If Fabian and Mara hadn’t been “the two side characters who needed a plotline and are both smart so let’s make them a couple”  then hypothetically, they could have been a cute couple, but after watching Fabian love Nina as much as he did it was hard to even imagine him with someone else, like they weren’t even a couple for most of the show, and yet you always knew they were in love, and with Mara, every plot she ever had to some degree just revolved around a boy, it would have been really good for her to end the show single, it would have been the right move for Fabian to announce that he was going to America to be with Nina, if they had any development, even one single scene the whole three seasons before the series finale math joke, then maybe Fabara/Mabian could have had potential, but it just wasn’t worth it

he’s a super well written version of the whole nerd archetype. he cares about people and is smart and he has interests outside of it like the guitar and he’s funny and is able to enjoy academia without being portrayed as a weirdo. I don’t like most nerds in things because they’re weird with girls and knowitalls and whilst fabian is a smart ass which is his fatal flaw which I love he works as a team and puts his all into things without overestimating his ability

his treatment of joy sucked. in all seasons but I’d argue the most in s1. it’s clear joy’s thing wasn’t one sided from the way he gets around nina when patricia mentions how close he is with joy or when they’re on video call and he gets embarrassed in front of nina. and the way he turned on patricia when joy went missing and then tried to use it to guilt trip her at the beginning of s3 was not it for me.

I think he’s a very interesting character but I think a lot of people like him far more than I do. I adore all the kids on the show but he is not near the top of my list and I don’t massively see the appeal of wanting him to have more plot. i hc his backstory as I said above and i don’t think he screams having some super interesting past that would be worth exploring in comparison to the other characters. also s3 is his best season and the most accurate version of his true self when he’s not trying to impress a crush. he’s a snarky little bitch and I love him for it

What do you think would've happened if Nina had been in S3 instead of KT ? I know certain things would've changed (I doubt she would've been framed as the traitor and most of the start of S3 would've changed as well, but she definitely would be related to RFS), but what sort of plots would've been part of it? Also, do you think they would've kept the Jerome cheating plotline? Personally, I hated that arc because it destroyed Jerome's character development and isolated the cast.

Okay so Peddie still breaks up. Nina somehow ends up with the key and her and Eddie start doing Sibuna stuff just the two of them because they don't want to risk their friends' lives again. Fabian gets jealous and this eventually leads to a Fabina break up. Nina and Eddie keep getting closer and this connection they have is causing them to have feelings for each other so they have to navigate that (and they definitely make out at some point lmao). They eventually realize they're better as friends/partners and Eddie gets back together with Patricia. I feel like the writers would have had Fabian and Nina get back together too but I really like Mabian so maybe in this world they start getting closer once Fabian and Nina break up and we actually get some build up for them. But Brad also made it sound like they were considering Fabian/Patricia when we interviewed him so maybe they would have gotten together? (I don't know how I feel about that though haha.) Also, Nina would definitely be related to RFS and I don't think she would have been taken as a sinner, though I could see Sibuna thinking she was (just like KT) because she would be the obvious target.

I would also love a world where Jerome doesn't cheat!! Maybe he just realizes he liked the idea of dating Mara more than he actually likes her and they break up? Then he has a quick rebound with Willow and Mara gets upset so she still asks Joy to fake date him and Jeroy still happens.

So, I've been listening to the Anubis Backwards Podcast and I wanted to describe some stuff from one involving Brad and I wanted your thoughts: Tasie and Brad lost the plot during S3 and were confused by Mabian, Brad found his role in S3 to be weird since he was no longer a lead (though I'm surprised he didn't say glorified extra), the writers considered KT and Fabian having a relationship but they originally had other plans for KT at the end of the season (Brad can't remember what they were).

Continuing Anubis Backwards Podcast with Brad Kavanagh Details: Season 4 would have focused on a new cast (he also compared Dexter and Cassie to Fabian and Amber), Mick and Amber's exits were creative decisions by the writers, Nathalia leaving was already known by end of filming S2 and that they should have filmed something in advance of that for the start of S3, Mabian wouldn't have lasted, and thinks something should be done for the 10th anniversary. Anyways, I would appreciate your thoughts.

I love their podcast! I know that HOA at its heart was an ensemble show, but it was definitely disappointing to have Brad’s character placed largely on the sidelines during season 3. I know he mentioned that they had all new writers for season 3, so that explains the different takes on the characters. Plus they apparently wrote the season in sections and constantly changed their plans.

I’m personally a Joy/K.T. shipper, but I could see Fabian with K.T. if he hadn’t turned into a sinner. Brad mentioned that the writers had thought about writing Fabian/Patricia into the script and I as much as I love Peddie, that would have been hilarious!

I have to agree with Brad that Mabian wouldn’t have lasted long after graduation. I figure that they went to separate universities in the fall, so they might have lasted the summer but not long after the start of the school year. They didn’t have a strong friendship to fall back on so as soon as they ran into their first couple fights, the relationship would be over.

I personally would LOVE a “10 years later” reunion (either cast or characters) episode(s). I headcanon that:

- Fabian and Eddie stayed super close even years later. I would love to see Eddie and Patricia as godparents to Fabian’s children. I know Brad was a jabian shipper, but I couldn’t see them getting back together after everything that happened between them. He probably married someone he met at work. I reckon that he got to university, looked around and realized that his traumatic teen years had supplied him with a ton of archeological knowledge and bolted for the Archeology and Museum Studies departments to sign up.

- Peddie got married the weekend after they graduated university. Patricia is now an artist and Eddie teaches Elementary School. They moved permanently to the UK, but still go to visit his mother a lot so that their 2 sons can know their grandmother. Mr. Sweet is definitely a helicopter grandparent who is reaping the rewards of the elixir.

- I think Willow and Alfie were cute, but I would love to have seen Amber and Alfie get back together and have a kid. Amber would have developed her own fashion brand and I could see Alfie as a stay at home father working his third popular Zombie novel. Alfie also struggled for a couple years with the side effects of having taken the elixer of life....

- Willow is a travel guide who took it upon herself to run the yearly Anubis House alumni news letter.

- I could see Mara with a doctorate and teaching at a University, happily single for the first time in years

- Mick and Nina show up to the reunion because I love them! Mick played football professionally for an Australian team and is a single father.

- Nina moved to Washington D.C. after her grandmother passed away. I could see her working as a librarian and enjoying a quiet life after her troubled teenage years. I figure she was probably the most reluctant to attend the reunion because of how everything ended.

- Joy is an event planner who moved to New York two years ago and fell in love with the city. Her and Jerome broke up during their first year of college, got back together after graduation, they were engaged but then she got cold feet and fled to the USA. Currently single after breaking up with her latest fling.

- Jerome has a bank job and finally has a healthy friendship with Alfie. He’s been single ever since Joy broke off their engagement two years ago and left for New York without a word.

- K.T. & Eddie still talk and she joined the military after graduation.

- Victor is off hiding in a cave with the touchstone of Ra so he won’t attend the reunion.

- Trudy and Jasper got married and they opened an B&B.
