PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE CORRUPTION AND METAPHORS TO ABUSIVE/TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS AND UNHEALTHY COPING MECHANISMS?

Oooooh boy, this is one of my favourite topics :D allow me to ramble (i mean, you can't stop me, all you can do is just not post this ask)

MAG 6 - Squirm: The Corruption keeps Harriet from getting help, is captivating to Timothy Hodge.

MAG 22 - Colony: A bit of a reach, but Martin's tendency to "set himself on fire to keep others warm" is why he ended up drawing the attention of Jane Prentiss, who in turn forced him to be alone for 13 days -- and we know self isolation is a common unhealthy tendency of Martin's

MAG 32 - Hive: Jane's knowledge that the hive is hurting her, yet feeling called by it; skin picking is a maladaptive coping mechanism and can also be a sign of ocd, etc; Jane being called "toxic" by her friends, isolation leading to unhealthy relationships/coping mechanisms/whatever the metaphor for the hive is today.

MAG 84 - Possessive: Maggie & Gordie as an unhealthy mother-son relationship? Becoming like those who hurt you, cycle of violence but rotting?

MAG 93 - Containment: Greg's cleaning compulsion is implied to be because of OCD and gets worse after his wife and daughter's death. Maladapitive coping mechanism?

MAG 102 - Nesting Instinct: The beetle took advantage of Benoit's loneliness and desperation for companionship, unhealthy relationships.

MAG 153 - Love Bombing: Cult manipulation tactics are portrayed in this episode, as far as I know, quite accurate to real life. Preying on the lonely and vulnerable, making them feel affection and connection, then yk. the bad stuff happens.

All this to say if you love The Corruption TMA and don't mind seeing gore and a sex scene, you should watch Midsommar. I did with my friend a bit ago and it was really good. The cinematography was phenomenal, so was the story, still in awe of it.

But on the tma topic, the Corruption TMA is really cool and I love talking about The Magnus Archives and the subtext and the analogies and it's like oooooh.

i think it's interesting how martin doesn't have the same scepticism as jon, which seems obvious cause he's had multiple run ins with the paranormal, he'd have no reason to disbelieve that it could happen but what's interesting is that he believes it happened to him. yeah i think the fact that he's dealt with worms before and the anxiety of not being believed probably makes him inclined to believe him or even he's just got way too much to worry about rather than whether or not someone's statement is fake

i wonder if anyone's got any good archivist!martin headcanons i feel like that would be so cool

truly obsessed with elias just rocking up to the statement recording room and hiring melanie on the spot. can only assume he used some kind of compulsion powers to make that work. but really there's so many things about this episode that i love - early days, but possibly my season favourite!

Elias exploits them all at their most vulnerable, look how just minutes before melanie says how she's lost everything and here he is offering her salvation, essentially trapping her unwittingly

A true bastard but great storytelling thanks to it

Oh, Martin's first statement! I feel like a proud mother on my kid's first day of kindergarten. Only with more horrors.

Yuck. The rubbish just spread like a stain until the entire area was infected. I hate this.

I'm a little uncertain whether Gordon got transformed into an avatar when he was paper mached later in the statement or if he was already one here. I think Gordon allowing the statement-giver to keep coming with him over and over despite how afraid he was could be evidence that he was feeding off him.

More evidence for him being avatared already: frequent prolonged contact with a known Corruption avatar and fingernails covered in dirt.

This is so fucked. Why were his parents lying? Were they afraid of Maggie, or of Gordon himself? Or were they also serving the Corruption? Maybe their relationship was just as broken and codependent as Gordon and Maggie's.

It's so awful how every Corruption statement is secretly about toxic, all consuming love.

She was covering him in paper mache all the time? So she could keep versions of him forever, buried in the yard to rot and be consumed by the worms? She must have really loved him.

Also what do we think the things crawling all over Gordon were? More worms or cockroaches?

The fact that he just showed up like nothing happened also makes me think that he was already avatared.

It's so sad that the statement-giver just assumed that because Gordon seemed fine that means he got out and never went back. If only.

mag 84 - possessive

growing up nearby a place called 'the dump' is such a trope, and it's one i love because i also grew up near somewhere colloquially called 'the dump'. in fact, so much about that neighbourhood was nearly cartoonish

otherwise, i haven't got much to say about the actual statement in itself. it's gross, which should probably be expected from a corruption statement

post-statement, however, is a delight. i really like martin's ways of delivering statements, even though i admittedly don't remember much of them. also, his and melanie's friendship? one of my favourites in the whole show. i know we only ever really get it here and in mag 118 and mag 191, but it's all so good. they get along so well, which is interesting since they are very different people. though they both express not really liking themselves much, and melanie clearly dislikes people like her, so maybe it's not that surprising lol

In Mag 84 possessive maggie should not have been the villain.

She was a recluse hoarder she had a mental illness that made it so so had for her to get on top of her own mess and to throw things away so the people in the town exploited this and used her property as a dump with the excuse that it doesn't matter because she dose that her self. Like oh my God that's so horrible. The people are terrified of her so of course she's a recluse she's not going to have any friends if the people in her town treat her home as a littral tip. They called her house maggies tip that's so unbelievably cruel.

Why was she straight up a monster in that episode she wasn't in the wrong at all it could have been a stranger or spiral episode where her stuff keeps getting added to and she doesn't know why or people pretending to be friends bringing gifts of broken washing machines and old bed frames or better yet not have the episode at all.

I love the magnus archives im not trying to damn it I'm just criticising it.
