Hamilton-style musical of rendition of Robert Smirke’s crew and the fallout between himself, Jonah Magnus, and the rest of them.
Ambitious Scottish upstart Jonah Magnus, plunging into the scene of higher society and academia
Interpersonal drama in the esoteric research and philosophy sphere
A power ballad aria from Smirke as he describes his grand, utopian plans for balance
Jonah seeing the wonders of this new world and getting increasingly involved in it, probably getting in some heated theoretical debates with Rayner et al. about it because, being Beholding- and Dark-aligned, their fundamental views would be diametrically opposed
A slowly-shifting musical motif for Jonah as his intentions develop over the course of the play
Barnabas pleading with Jonah through his letter; they’re in separate parts of the stage with different lightings and they can’t see each other. Jonah is reading, rather than listening to, his words
SPOTLIGHTS REMINISCENT OF EYES
Harrowing solo as Jonah sinks deeper into fearing the possibility of rituals
More below the cut because I’m going nuts about this.
I would feel like there’s too much ground to cover (c. 1809 [estimated year Jonah gets introduced to the Fears if he established the Institute in 1818 and talked Smirke into working on Millbank 1815-1821] all the way to 1867 [year of Smirke’s death and the final decommissioning of Millbank: the year in which I place Jonah’s first attempt at the Watcher’s Crown]) if it weren’t for the several decades covered in Hamilton. It provides a pretty good guide for such a varied timeline.
More insane scenes:
Contrast of Albrecht Von Closen’s 1816 letter informing Jonah of his findings at his nephew’s estate vs Dr. Johnathan Fanshawe’s 1831 letter revealing how Jonah knowingly caused Von Closen’s death by stealing his books and got him filled with eyes
Smirke watching the group he formed fall to the Fears in turn, clinging to his alliance with Jonah and therefore being blind to his own turn towards Beholding
Jonah’s financial wheedling with Mordechai Lukas and other donors for his fledgling Institute
Jonah being so gleeful about his brand new Magnus Institute in Edinburgh, after several years of compiling statements informally
HE GETS TO DELIGHT IN ALL THE SCHEDULING AND LOGISTICS!!!
Just. all the letters we have record of. I haven’t even gotten to Dr. Algernon Moss or the conflict between George Gilbert Scott and Sampson Kempthorne
PETTY architecture drama

For mag50, maybe the governor was a buried avatar Jekyll and Hyde situation? So when George goes away and the statement giver can hear him shouting and stuff, what's happening is he's arguing with the governor about making things smaller and more fitting for the buried?
The first time I listened to this episode it was just really interesting spooky history, but knowing all the context it's pretty confusing
Hmmm perhaps!

Relistened to mag50, an episode that used to confuse and bore me, and I'm glad to say that I now understand the episode! Though this unfortunately means my hatred of the narrator has returned with fervor <3

I absolutely LOVE your jonah gif with the lovers eyes its beautifully done. But I have to ask bc I'm a dummy, who is kempthorne?? I dont remember him at all
understandable lol his statement was the least impactful to me. i have some ideas for him though. he wrote the letter to jonah in MAG 50: Foundations
heres a compilation of the jonah letter eps:
MAG23 - Albrecht von Closen
MAG50 - Sampson Kempthorne (+ Robert Smirke)
MAG92 - Barnabas Bennett (+ Mordechai Lukas)
MAG127 - Jonathan Fanshawe (+ Albrecht von Closen)
MAG 138 - Robert Smirke
I listen to all of them frequently
Also, completely unprompted, but while we’re here ... here’s a ranking frm most to least impactful to me personally (for fun ahhah):
MAG92 - the shortest but the saddest. It’s......so simple.......but so effective... the commentary elias gives abt it afterwards is potent espescially after discovering certain things much later. my bias for barnabas bennett is huge
MAG138 - this episode genuinely terrified me. i think.. it’s the scariest out of all of them? i love how it flows though. rly well-written... smirke’s desparation is so palpable that i could feel the abrupt end of the letter coming
MAG23 - the first jonah letter. when i reached this ep in my first listen of tma i was floored by the period change. albrecht’s verboseness caught me in a trance and it instantly became my fav so far. i picture this ep vividly in my head all the time
MAG127- i know i was more worried abt mainplot details at this stage but this ep was so good in hindsight the more i think about it. the concept was really good and gave me shivers. the animosity. the betrayal. fanshawe and albrecht... yes... it’s also the letter that finally made me resolutely assured all these letters were gay
MAG50 - kempthorne is quite detached frm extraneous emotions in relation to jonah especially since his statement comes after mister Albrecht “im sorry for writing this letter so soon after the last you must think my dreadful for not even letting you respond” von Closen. I do not have claustrophobia so it didn’t spook me but his relations to smirke were interesting. he also fled the country so like. perhaps was the only one untampered by jonah what a lucky bastard
In conclusion: bitches be absolute clowns focusing on these completely irrelevant side characters (im bitches)

Hold on I've realised that Jonah was possibly Scottish... like he lived in Edinburgh and that's where his original institute was before moving down to London. Never seen anyone mention this before?? Or have I just missed out
Yeah! No one really mentions it and in the podcast itself it’s never really brought up save for MAG50, I believe, and maybe one other place. It’s a small detail and I love it a lot, but I also rarely see people mention it. There are a few fics here and there that’ll sprinkle it in and maybe a few meta posts, so it’s likely you probably haven’t seen much.
I would love to see more of it though; it’s such an interesting little fact that can add so much to Jonah.

honestly the one moment from tim stoker that could actually be called himbo behavior was in mag50 when he assumed basira & jon were hooking up, and that has equal odds of being either:
-what else could “helping her with some of the investigation...o-off the record” mean honestly jon was being very suspicious there
-oh good time to tease jon about a thing!!!
