Chapter 5

Scars and Souvenirs 

Summary: Sy and his lady both retire from the army but not before tragedy befalls Sy. He slowly tries to adjust to life again on their ranch.

Sy laughed as his three year old niece gave Deb the third degree. Millie was completely enamored with Sy which he was so shocked by since he spent most of her life in the middle east but was incredibly grateful for it. 

"Why didn't ya bing mah unka Sy sooner. He coulda skeered da torm away?" Millie huffed at Debbie. She believed her Uncle Sy could fix everything, even bad weather.

"I'm sorry sweetie but he had to help your grandma with some stuff earlier," Debbie explained. Millie was the cutest little girl with blond hair and blue eyes and at three already had Sy's stubbornness and attitude. Seeing them together, Sy huge and Millie so tiny was cute but watching the big, bad, marine be bossed and pushed around by this tiny little girl was the most adorable thing ever.

"Why didn't you do it?" Millie pouted at Deb.

"Cause she didn't want me too. She wanted to spend time with Uncle Sy," She explained. 

"Why not?" Millie questioned. "You do it den Unka Sy be here wif me!"

"Cause she said she wanted him, not me" Deb shrugged. 

"Why?" She asked again.

"Stop bein stupid 'silly millie'." Amy and Mike's oldest kid, Robbie sneered. He was six and he thought little sisters were the worst. 

"Hey," Amy, Mike and Sy all said at the same time. "We don't call people stupid young man," Amy finished.

"Yea poopy head!" Millie stuck her tongue out at him.

"No ma'am," Sy shook his head. "You don't get to call him names either."

"Whhhhyyy?" She whined. "He is a poopy head!"

"Silly Millie, silly Millie," Robbie sang.

"Cause it's not nice," Sy explained while trying not to laugh. "But mostly because I said so." He pointed at Robbie. "That means you to."

"Otay," Millie nodded and played with the doll she had in Sy's lap.

"Fine," Robbie sighed.

Sy's phone rang and he looked at the screen before turning it to silent with a huff. Deb looked at him quizzically but before she could ask her phone rang. She looked at the screen and did the same thing Sy had done.

"What's going on?" Amy asked but just as she did her phone rang. "Hello?"

"Are they there?" Sara demanded.

"Hello to you too mom," Amy rolled her eyes as she excused herself to the kitchen for privacy. 

"Are they there?" She huffed again.

"Yes they are here. The storm was worse down their way and they couldn't get home. They were exhausted and not in any shape to be alone anyway."

"They were here but she decided I didn't need to have a discussion with my own son. She has no right to try to come between us. He's my son and I have a right to know what…"

"No you don't!" Amy yelled into her phone. "Yes, you are our mother but that doesn't give you the right to know every tiny detail of our lives. Whatever Sy went through over there we know it was awful and if he doesn't want to retell it or doesn't want us knowing then we should be ok with that. All that he needs from us is for us to love him just like he loves us. Is that not enough for you?" Amy was near breathless from her rant but when she heard the click of Sara's phone turning off her blood boiled and she growled rather loudly.

"Don't ruin your relationship with her because of me." Sy had stepped into the kitchen when he heard Amy's raised voice. "I don't know why she's being this way but she's dead set on knowing it all and I don't just don't think I can do it."

Amy hugged him. "You don't have to, Sy. If talking about what happened helps you I will gladly listen to every detail. I will continue to love you just the same if you never tell me anything that happened. You are my little brother." 

He walked over to the counter and leaned his hip against it, arms crossed over his chest. "I should just disappear.  It would make everyone's lives easier."

"You better not disappear! We need you," Amy insisted 

Millie came running into the kitchen ending their conversation.  "Unka Sy!" She ran up to him with her little arms in the air and he scooped her up.

"And what do you want?" He asked her as he tickled her and made her squirm and giggle.

"Come pay wif me!"

He sighed dramatically then flipped her upside. "I guess,  if I have to."  

They spent time playing with the kids before they had their dinner and got ready for bed both falling asleep after a story.

Once it was quiet Sy's mind started to go into hyper vigilance again and he was getting antsy. His eyes were darting to all the windows and doors searching for the enemy. When Amy came back downstairs and called them to the kitchen so they could all eat dinner Deb got an idea. "Amy, do you have any card games or board games?"

"I do!" She jumped up excitedly and went to gather them up.

"You did it now woman," Sy shook his head. "She loves playing games."

Deb held out her hand to him and tried to pull him up which was futile until he helped. "Games are a good distraction," She explained as she guided him toward the kitchen. Once he was in front of her she smacked his ass. "Woman?" She growled. 

He bit back a shocked squeak and spun on her quickly wrapping his arms around her and roughly squeezing her ass with both hands. "Yea, woman." There was a playfulness in his eyes as she reached back and swatted at his hands. "Mine", he growled deep in his chest as he pressed his forehead to hers.

"Only yours, always," She promised. He kissed her until she was breathless and leaning heavily against him. "Mmmm," She sighed contentedly.

"Found em," Amy held up the boxes triumphantly. 

Thirty minutes later they were deep into a game of 'Syverson rules Uno' which she learned ment the deck had three special make your own wild cards, one of which Sy made a draw 10 card and you could 'stack' draw cards. The first hand Debbie had to draw eight and Sy enjoyed that just a little too much. So now, about half way into the game, Debbie was in a fit of hysterical laughter, Amy was in tears from laughter, Mike was trying to hide his smile and Sy was cursing. "Biggest bunch of fuckin bullshit I've ever seen in my life." He grumbled. "You keep laughin'" he shook his finger at Deb. It only made her laugh so hard she snorted which led to Amy's hysterical laughter and poor Aika looking at them all like they were mad. "It's not that funny!" Sy huffed at his sister.

"You," gasp, "had to," snort, "draw," guffaw, "18!" Tears from laughter streamed down Amy's face.

He shook his head and glared at her before picking up a pretzel twist and throwing it at her head which Aika happily munched as soon as it hit the floor. "Play!" He growled. 

Deb tried to control her laughter but failed, earning her own pretzel to the head. "They're your rules Syverson! I'm just playing by them," she explained innocently. 

"Uh-huh," he nodded, giving her a look that was supposed to be of anger but he couldn't hide his grin. 

They continued to play games for a couple of hours before Deb noticed Sy starting to wear out. "I hate to end a fun time but I'm getting kinda tired. I think I'm ready to stretch out."

"Of course," Amy stood up and gave her a hug. "You know where everything is but if there is something you can’t find just let me know."

"Thank you again for letting us crash here," sis. 

"You know you're welcome here anytime. " She gave him a hug then shooed them off to bed.

Deb made sure Aika had been walked then crawled into bed where Sy was already waiting. The coolness of the sheets was welcoming on her sore, aching body. She wasn't really sleepy but physically she was beyond exhausted. Sighing contentedly when Sy pulled her against his side she pressed a kiss to his chest. "You feeling better sweetheart? "

"Still not right but much better than earlier. I'm so sorry you have to go through this with me. You deserve so much better."

The sadness in his voice broke her heart. She raised up on her elbow and looked at him. "I'm sorry you have to go through it baby, that you went through any of it. You're wrong though. I don't deserve better because there is no one better."

He turned on his side and hugged her to him pressing a kiss to her head nearly purring as she ran her nails lightly up and down his back.

"Mine," She said softly.

"All yours sugar. Only yours."

Yesterday I spent the whole day binge reading this book lmao I was really invested and I also ended up being super surprised with the ending but that's mostly because of me lol

If you've been having doubts whether playing it or not, I highly recommend it. I personally really liked it and I feel it worth reading it

SO, uhhh, decided to start intentionally writing my shit down! Woo! We gonna go slow burn on this shiz! Eventually poly... I honestly have so many ideas that, as soon as I know concrete details about this story, I’ll put a label on it >xD As for a summary:

Rhene has long since accepted the fact that her life is boring. She works a job, she goes home to her cat, she has friends she can spend time with. Life is perfectly full of things that make most people perfectly content. But she's not. So maybe going back to school will give her the chance to improve things, change things, find a better a job. There's always a salary increase if you've got a Masters degree and what's a few loans compared to improving ones life? Oh! Ya know, she never got to study abroad as an undergrad! She could totally start off abroad! That's totally exciting, right? At least maybe she'll find something new to hyper-fixate on so she can pretend like her life isn't completely unfulfilling. Yeah, this is totally a great idea. What could possibly go wrong?

Prologue

Cheers and laughter amongst rumbling raucous voices were just background noise, the soundtrack of her life that continued on. Endlessly. A repeating tune that could never break away from its circling fate.

Like turkeys. Dumb fuckin’ turkeys walking in a circle around road kill in an attempt to intimidate the scary dangerous thing. Continuing to go round and round because they’re just following the turkey in front of them.

Why had she agreed to come out? At least at home she could have been sleeping, or mindlessly binging a show she wasn’t particularly interested in. That would’ve been more entertaining than this.

The air shifted, the weight of Tyler’s attention laying itself against her shoulders, and she released the sigh that had been building up, the minimal, physical embodiment of her irritation. She set her drink down firmly against the table and pushed it a safe distance away.

“Rhen!” The top half of her body lurched forward with Tyler’s bearing weight, his arms two obnoxious noodles folding around her, “Reeehnn~ You’ve been spacing out allll night longggggggg. Yuh’ve bareLY had a single- single drink!” The butt of his chin dug into the top of her head, “Come ooonnnnn! It’s been, like… like… like… FOREVER since we’ve hanged out… chilled...hung out!”

Damn, she hated whiskey. And having to inhale it from Tyler did not make it any more appealing. “Yeah, Tyler, I know.”

“You’re leaving tmrrrow- tamorrorr- Ta-Mah-Ro! Yuh should be havin fun! Be happy! Be merry! Be fun-ny!” His giggling made the obnoxious shit she’d known since high school lose his grip, the messy haired swim-varsity-captain-aged-ten-years stumbling into the seat next to her.

She pat his head, his hair still unerringly soft, even after all these years—something about hair-care regimen being important for swimmers if they didn’t want to lose their hair— “I know, buddy, I’m having fun; I promise,” She smiled and took a drink, the coke ‘n rum sliding down as easily as the lie.

Tyler, oh-so drunk and uncoordinated, shuffled and slid his chair closer, bringing his forehead down to rest on her arm. Rhen kept the appendage still, reaching across and picking up her drink with her other hand.

It was almost a whisper, and for a moment she thought he was drunk-mumbling and falling asleep on her, “I hope you have fun. Maybe- maybe you’ll have so much funn, you might be happy and decide to stay. That would be good… Though I’d be sad.... I’ll just come visit you then!”

Well, that was rather optimistic.

Rhen took a moment, sipping her drink and petting Tyler’s head because he enjoyed people playing with his hair and his girlfriend currently wasn’t here, leaving her to take care of the drunk idiot.

“I’ll miss you too, buddy. I doubt I’ll have more fun there. I’ll be coming back, no doubt.” It’s not like being here or being there really made any amount of difference. She’d still be living the same damn life. “Besides, did you forget? I’m studying abroad. It’s not like a vacation.”

Tyler lifted his head, a shit-eating grin sloppily pasted on his face, “That’s true… But yu’re a loser who likes studying, so-”

“Alright, you piece of shit!”

Tyler laughed as she half-heartedly beat him off of her.

“Come on,” he said, his fingers struggling to grab her arm and pull her to her feet—how many doubles was he even seeing?—“Let’s go get some more drinks. DRINKS!”

She sighed again, debating on whether to fight him on getting up or not, but, well, when he got drunk, he was more stubborn than when he was sober.

“Fine,” She huffed, “But you’re buying.”

Well then.

Rhen sighed, staring at the room—the large room—, so nicely furnished with a bed, table to study with, even a TV mounted to the wall! Fairy lights and lanterns illuminated the room with a warm glow and–

Holy shit, was that a tree in the middle of her room?!

So this was to be her new abode for the next approximate year. Damn this was probably the nicest university accommodations she’d ever seen. What was even the tuition rate for this place?

Wait.

Holy shit! Was she even getting credit for this?!

Was this even an accredited college?!

Did any of that even actually matter?

She slumped to the floor, pulling her knees up to give her chin something to rest on and closed her eyes to the unfamiliar world around her.

Devils and Angels, huh? Ya know, the idea was entertaining—supernatural creatures ‘n such—and who didn’t have a sneak-into-the-local-haunt-and-fuck-with-a-ghost adventure at least once in their childhood, but being the skeptic she was, she hadn’t ever really fully believed in monsters. Humans were monstrous enough.

It had already been five years since the existence of witches became public knowledge, but it wasn’t like they came out sharing every single detail about themselves and their world. Droves upon droves of people had flocked to The Community, all desperate to learn magic and be a part of their secret little world. Some were accepted. Most were turned away. Why they picked the people they did, they never gave an explanation. She had wanted to try—it’s magic! Of course she wanted to learn!—but before she could, her best friend, her sister-from-another-mister, her platonic soulmate, the one person she loved above all else and would do anything for, went for it, gushing about how she knew she’d be allowed to join them. Even before witches were revealed, Amelia had always known magic existed in her lineage; from her grandmother, to her mother, then to her, so of course she would be welcomed into The Community.

So, Rhen had to wait. Because if she ended up getting accepted—she hoped, but held no expectations—and Amelia wasn’t? Rhen wouldn’t even contemplate how much of a betrayal that would be. Sure, Amelia would pretend to be happy for her, but Rhen would always feel guilty for “receiving the honor”. If Amelia didn’t become a witch, it would be better if Rhen didn’t know anything at all. No matter how desperately she wished otherwise.

Though, the last time Rhen had heard from Amelia, she was still on the waiting list…

But here she was, at demon university, by no intention of her own. If she let this chance pass her, she knew she’d resent Amelia for the rest of her life, by no fault of Amelia’s. What was she supposed to do?

She let the tight and encompassing self-embrace fall loose, her legs folding below her, her palm coming to rest at the center of her midsection. She inhaled, her lungs expanded, filling and filling until they couldn’t any more, forcing out and giving no room for the uncertainty—and fear—that had been trying to take root in her chest to linger.

The flutter settled—not gone, but quiet—a soft whisper that brushed against her like an invisible hair.

It was disconcerting, though. How was it that she, a mundane human with no prior knowledge or apparent magical ability, was selected for this program? It was odd, but fuck, she wasn’t going to complain and she was grateful that Lord Diavolo was just going to roll with it as well. If she had been brought here, given the chance to learn magic and was told about monsters and all things supernatural-fantasy and how they are actually a part of our world, then kicked back to the human world, she would have been pissed. Like dangling a piece of meat in front of a starving dog. Even if she had to write a fuckin’ thesis by the end of her time here, this was too awesome of an experience to miss out on.

When was the last time she felt this excited?

It was a bonus that they were allowing her exceptions: until she gained some measurable ability using magic, any grades reflecting her magical use would not count against her. Awesome. But because she couldn’t use magic—thus considered unable to protect herself against any threat that might present itself—it was Lord Diavolo’s responsibility to ensure her safety. Therefore, Rhen was not, in fact, staying in the dorm allocated for the exchange students, but instead she was to stay in the dorm of the student council, one of who was to be her designated body guard and Devildom guide.

She honestly would have found that rather funny: a student council? Really? What does a demon university student council even do? Was there going to be a whole-ass homecoming event week for the beginning week of classes? Apparently, though, only they could be absolutely trusted with her safety, considering they were demon lords themselves, some of the highest ranking of Lord Diavolo’s nobility. No matter how enticing her shiny human soul was, apparently she would be safe with them.

Six lords, six brothers, six demons to try and keep out of the way of.

Yup. Totally manageable.

like video games, Baji is an absolute menace at carnival games, especially those that are a test of strength or accuracy

anything that you are eyeing, he can easily win for you

more than happy to exchange stuff with you if you happen to win something that he wants

you two always return from fairs with armloads full of prizes and stuff and your wallets completely empty

you two can most likely read each other minds or something by now - somehow whatever the two of yall wanted to do for the day usually lines up with each other

if it doesn’t, then the two of you will just argue and make a scene, and go with whatever you wanted to do

Baji is still baby - he doesn’t want to see you sad, so he just puts up enough of a fight to soothe his pride and then go along with whatever you wanted to do 🤡🤡

if Baji is recovering from a fight he got into, gang-related or not, he usually wants to do something more relaxing somewhere quieter - so yall usually end up taking his bike out to the outskirts of the city or the countryside

if its too impromptu, you two will usually grab some snacks, drinks and water from a convenience store

or if its an advanced notice outing, maybe a picnic or fishing or both

you are the one that packs the food for the day before heading out 

definitely stargazing when the weather conditions are right and yall don’t have to wake up early the next day

exception is when there is is a meteor shower, then by golly the two of you are going to watch it whether there is school the next day or not

picnics are usually arranged earlier on the same day so yall will already have a good spot to watch the show

Baji will absolutely beat up and threaten anyone that tries to steal your spot, so no worries there

makes sure you get home safe and sounds after staying out so late

Gorillaz: Plastic Beach

mAh, nostalgia. This album was my high school years. I got a digital copy for my birthday from my mom and became obsessed with this album well into college. The dominance of electronica, the use of people with great voices, the expansion of the lore, Lou Reed...this album was all of music when I got it. It's my favorite Gorillaz album and it looks like it's gonna stay that way for a while. But how is it on a not even approaching semi-objective level? Let's find out.

1. Orchestral Intro

You can probably guess it by my awful taste but I'm not really into orchestra. This opening though, with the sound of waves and the mourning instruments, really tipped me off that I was in for something different. This album wasn't going to start off with something chill or even a zombie movie clip. No, at this point, Gorillaz were officially done fucking around.

2. Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach

Then we get the brass leading us into a good beat and then HOLY SHIT, SNOOP DOGG?! He leads us in like a bandleader while a chorus of women back him up Just Like That while he goes with his usual flow. He adds the needed touch of instant cool to an album that's practically frozen with the artists already on it and with this song, it feels like you're walking past the gate into Disneyland.

3. White Flag

Some nice Arabian sounding instruments on this one. Pretty cool for Gorillaz to keep engaging in world music. Anyway, this was a really cool instrumental but it's time to move on to the other son---

Suddenly, we get beeps and mixes backing up Bashy and Kano as they kick so much ass talking about pacifism for the sake of survival. This song kicks an undisputed amount of ass and it barely even tries.

4. Rhinestone Eyes

What I like about this song is that I keep finding new things to like about it as the years go back. First, I liked the weirdly-threatening nature of the song along with the woman moaning in time with the verses. Then I liked the video (even though it was insanely shady of EMI to release that without Damon's and Jamie's permission and it ended up being the thing that led to Phase 3's premature ending and Gorillaz going on hiatus). Then I liked the continuation of the moaning that I first noticed in live performances then finally heard in the song itself. This song is like Rolexes falling from the sky.

5. Stylo

Ah, the first single from the album. I remember telling my dad about this when I first saw the video for it. I was about to write off Gorillaz as a relic of my past before I saw Murdoc and 2D get run off the road by Bruce Willis. This song has an awesome bridge by Yasiin Bey, nice crooning by Damon Albarn and incredible back-up by Bobby Womack, who manages to lift the entire song over his head using just his voice. Damn, wish he had another song that put his voice on full display. Maybe later in the album...

6. Superfast Jellyfish

Yeah, De La Soul is back! And they're singing about TV dinners! Seriously, these guys can make guessing crossword actually fun instead of a dredging experience and have Shiny Toy Guns frontman Chad Petree singing about radioactive seas brings the whole thing home. It makes you want to really go out and eat a random jellyfish but don't do that. It'll hurt.

7. Empire Ants

Okay, before I give this song its totally fair score, it should be noted this is my third favorite song of all time. I love Damon's reassuring lyrics in the beginning but the switch in the middle to a more upbeat electronic pop tune pushes this song past perfect.

Then there's Little Dragon...

This song introduced to me to Yukimi Nagano's voice and wow...I didn't think humans could sound like that, let alone an Asian woman singing soul. If you think the instruments are carrying her here, obviously there are clearly no other songs on the album that showcase her talents so I have to recommend After The Rain, Twice and Constant Surprises by Little Dragon. Seriously, this woman's voice will water your fucking crops.

8. Glitter Freeze

Where is north from here? Don't ask me, I'm not a compass. Anyway, this song has Mark E. Smith from The Fall and they use him to his fullest extent...by which I mean letting him make an absolutely evil fucking laugh somewhere near the end. The instrumentation makes it feel like you're in a storm on a shaky ship and you're definitely going to feel like you need some pills after you're finished. This stuff will put hair on your chest.

9. Some Kind of Nature

This song introduced me to Lou Reed and I'm grateful to it for that. Lou was a shitty dude but damn his voice really made things better than they should have been. Fuck, I was one of the eight defenders of Lulu for this reason. But Damon doesn't sit with his thumbs up his ass on this song. He holds his own and makes the chorus sound legitimately dreamlike. All we are is stars, indeed.

10. On Melancholy Hill

This song is awesome to chill to...unless you're escaping a cruise ship while being gunned down by fighter jets. But other than that particular example, I recommend this song for anyone trying to relax while thinking of someone special. But be careful with the last note of this song. That gong can be a real eye opener.

Bummer of a song but if there's one song you absolutely NEED to learn on melodica, it's this one. Aren't we all broken? Well I am. And this song speaks to me.

12. Sweepstakes

Yasiin's back and there's gonna be trouble. He plays a carny in this track and you know that no matter how many times you listen to this song, you'll always gonna fall for his schemes. He's gone on to say that this is one of his finest achievements as a MC and I can see why.

Holy shit, they got the 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover guy on this track. Makes since because this, outside of Empire Ants, is my favorite song on the album. The harmony, the little imp they got for the bridge, the triangle...everything makes this song better than it has any right to be on an already awesome album. Damn, plastico indeed.

14. To Binge

Shock of all shocks, Yukimi's back! And it's a duet with Damon! And it's a song about a relationship torn apart by addiction! It's not my birthday so it must be Christmas. These two manage to drown the listen in waves of audio goodness that leaves them feeling like they spent 3 minutes and 56 seconds standing under a waterfall.

15. Cloud of Unknowing

Okay, I cried to this song. And now, with Bobby Womack's passing, I cry even harder. This song should be an anime ending with how solemn it is but you need to listen to the end to hear, "It may bring sunshine on its wings." Also, Damon covered this song live after Womack's passing. I suggest you look it up because it is tear-ripping.
