A Missed Connection
Melissa Schemmenti x Reader
Prompt: Two missed flights bring two women together over overpriced booze and underfunded schools
a/n: this is a lil short drabble that i'd be more than happy to expand if anyone was interested.
Tumblr media
Y/n gazed at the empty gate with a sigh. The flashing “flight closed” on the screen was like a constant taunt. A missed flight and now her entire vacation was gone. Gripping the straps of her bag she took a deep breath before gazing at her watch. 5:48pm and stuck in the city. A city she’d been in for the last academic year. She sent one last longing glance toward the gate and finally rolled her carry-on behind her as she walked away from the plane.
She pulled out her phone and opened up her travel app, hoping to find another flight to her destination. A tropical beach was calling her name and after the semester she’d had, she deserved it. Being a college professor definitely had its perks but with the late submissions and Advisor meetings, Y/n was ready to soak up some sun. She held out hope as she saddled up to an airport bar but as she scrolled her hope dwindled until nothing. She was not getting to her destination any time soon. Turning her phone over she rested her elbows on the sticky bar with a pout. So much for vacation.
She reached for one of the menus coned on the bar and browsed the drinks listed. Her finger worked down the list and prices with a grimace but settled on some sort of fruity cocktail. Just as she was about to place her order there was a huff a few seats down and a grumble to follow.
“Gimme a beer,” a husky voice called as a redhead hoisted herself onto the bar stool. She slammed her purse on the counter, neglecting the conveniently placed bag hooks under the bar and shoved her glasses into her hair. Y/n’s eyes were drawn to the older woman as the bartender slid the beer over to the woman. She gave a grateful nod and threw the drink back in frustration. Finally pulling her eyes away from the woman she placed her order and watched as the bartender made her drink. The tall glass was placed in front of her and she smiled in thanks before pulling the straw to her mouth. She mindlessly sipped until the redhead let out another sigh and slid her phone a little too far down the bar. It landed much farther to Y/n than it did her and as soon as she realized it, the older woman mumbled a quiet ‘shit’ before looking over at Y/n.
“Sorry, hon. I didn’t hit you did I?” She asked as she placed her beer down.
Y/n shook her head with a soft smile, “No, but you seem to be having just as bad a day as I am.” The redhead met her eyes with a shrug before moving to take the seat next to her and retrieve her phone.
“Missed my flight out of here and now I’m missing my one week of freedom before June.”
“Oh do I know that feeling, I just wrapped a semester and had a beach and Mahi Tai with my name on it. Looks like we’re both missing out.” Y/n said lifting her drink toward the redhead in a toast of sorts. They clinked their glasses together before sipping. “I’m y/n.”
“Melissa, you teach?”
“I’m a professor at UPenn. I just started over there in the Fall.”
“Wow, you seem a little young to be a college professor.”
“I guess I’m pretty young compared to my colleagues. What do you do?”
“I teach elementary school in the city. Second and Third grade.”
“At the same time?” Y/n asked sitting her glass down and turning toward Melissa.
“Unfortunately, it’s been a hard year so far. I’m hoping to get a better aide next year or a new teacher but there’s only so much the district is willing to give.”
“Oh I know that feeling all too well. I started out subbing in public schools on the side to make money and that was insane. I commend you for doing it full-time. And I’m even more sorry that you’re missing your vacation.”
“Well, it could be worse. Having a drink with a pretty woman isn’t the worst way to spend my evening.” Melissa shrugged eyeing the younger woman to gauge her reaction to the come-on.
“Well, I could definitely think of worse ways to spend my time. How about I buy you another one? A little alcohol is always a great start to a vacation, no matter what the location.”
“Can’t argue with that.”

Pearlina prompts to celebrate Side Order
Marina sometimes likes to fall asleep listening to Pearl's singing/rapping, her voice is adorable and Marina loves it.
Marina loves to pick up the Pearl drone and give her kisses, the Pearl drone may even show hearts in her eyes in response.
Pearl enjoys going to Mahi Mahi Resort with Marina for dates, Marina loves drinking soda near the swimming pool while watching Pearl attempting to show off and look cool, she can't help but giggle and smile watching her girlfriend be herself.
Pearl sometimes gently massages Marina's back while she's working on her laptop, to help her relieve a lot of stress, Marina may tell her that her being there is a great stress reliever for her.
Marina loves sketching Pearl, she often draws Pearl looking heroic as she considers her to be her hero.
Even as a drone, Pearl still squeaks.

Day 6: Whale Shark
This research expedition is nearing its end, and the kind folks who onboarded me are happy to drop me off at the base of operations for me next trip. On our way to the last stop, we actually spotted a Broad Mouthed Prowler. Despite what the name might suggest, this particular subspecies of Prowler is one of the gentlest, despite being the largest of them, mostly drifting along the current to collect tiny animals into their wide mouths. I watched her for a long time, lost in the pattern on her back. Sometimes I wonder if I could have a quiet life like her, like Mana. I think of my girls and hope their lives might be as quiet.

Filmi prompts from old and our favourite bollywood songs that can be used for your desi romantic stories or as a cute little idea for your fake scenarios. Kya malum sochte sochte kab manifest hojaye?
1. Neele Neele Ambar Par (Kalaakaar)
-- This summer vacation you are at your nani ghar. The nights provide respite from the scorching heat so you run off to the terrace every night to sit and gaze at the moon until one fine evening, you see a boy opposite to your house wistfully gaze at the moon and scribble something on his notebook. His wavy hair falls gracefully on his eyes, and you can feel your heart melt. It's full moon, and she is right on the top of the terrace, letting her moonbeams fall on this handsome quiet writer. Perhaps, he realized someone's gaze over him. He looks up, and you swear to God that you have never seen such a beautiful boy ever. The boy blushes and continues writing while stealing glances at you.
2. Mitwa (Chandni)
-- It's the last day you both will ever meet in the school premises. Yes, it's farewell today. You are dressed in a yellow chiffon saree. For the first time, your school decided to make the boys wear kurtas instead of the usual suits, and the sight was too pretty for your eyes. Your boyfriend wore the typical black kurta with cuffed sleeves that made your heart go dhak dhak. Loads of fun filled dancing, canteen ka khana, principal ke speech ke baad arrived the time to say goodbyes. School had kept the farewell after board exams so this was literally the last time you all gathered together. After hugging your friends, you go to the school main gate and find him leaning against the adjacent wall.
Hand in hand, both of you walk outside the school. 'Everything is going to change, isn't it?" You ask. He takes a bite of his ice cream, and answers, "Yes. No more school classes, no more sneaking out and we might have a long distance going on, but some things will stay permanent."
"Aur voh kya?"
"Tere mere honthon pe mithe mithe geet mitwa.."
3. Bole Chudiyan (K3G)
-- You are the bride's sister, and that boy is your acadmeic rival at school. However, for now, he is also your jija's dear brother. Today is Sangeet, and you were determined to outperform ladke vale. Both of you were good at academics, but also at dancing. This was a test and a chance to rub defeat on his face.
That was your actual plan until two days ago, your didi jiju decided to have a group combined performance where you and your rival would be the lead dancers to unite both the enemies (you and him). Needles to say, you were mad. There was no way you would dance with his smooth moves and charismatic style. He was mad too. He would never dance with your graceful bollywood moves straight from 90s Saroj Khan choreohgraphy.
Keeping aside snide remarks and your school rivalry, both of you managed to choreograph and coordinate everyone dashed with a little tension that did not go unnoticed by didi jija and cousins. Dressed in a baby pink lehenga, you see him arrive on the stage in a golden white sherwani. He sends a two finger salute to your direction while you roll your eyes.
'Aake meri duniya mein vapas aajana' you pull him gently as per the choreography. He stumbles towards you, not aware of his scarf clinging on to your bracelet. 'Sehra baandh ke mahi tu mere ghar aana...' He twirls you halfway and you notice that his scarf is stuck on your bracelet.
You hate how his stupid handsome smirk is making butterflies fly in your body. After the semi twirl, he turns you over in front, his arm around your bare waist causing you to gasp silently. God knows what came over him. He lightly pecks your cheek in front of everyone and discreetly removes his stuck scarf.
'Oye soni kitti soni aaj tu lagdi ve bas mere sath yeh jodi teri sajdi ve' Didi and jija come in and dance to their assigned part. You run away from him quickly to calm your racing heart.
He is looking at you, a grin gracefully sitting over his pretty lips. You bashfully look up. 'Haan main ho gaya tera sajna.' It's the time for all the boys to come together on the stage. Your rival shoots a smooth wink before going to dance.
4. Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga (1942: A love story)
You accidentally fell from your cycle by speeding over the speed breaker. Obviously you won't cry. You are fifteen now. A girl quickly arrives towards you, and in a soft voice asks, "Hey, you okay? That was a terrible fall. Dhyan kidhar tha?" Wincing, you look up, and see a pretty girl with silver jhumke and white salwar blowing at your wound. She is wearing a multi coloured bandhani dupatta. In two seconds, you forget the blood oozing out of your knee. The only red your eyes are focused on are on the pretty red shade of the girl's lips.
She is about to tear her dupatta to tie it across your wound. Your hand immediately holds her wrist, and you feel electricity jolt in your fingers. "Itna sundar dupatta kharab mat karo. Ghar idhar paas hai. Just help me to reach my gate, please."
Shaking her head, she tears her dupatta while you let out a gasp. "You are bleeding too much, besides I can always buy a new dupatta." She finally looks up at you and smiles. That's when you get a clear picture of her face.
Doe eyes lightly lined with kajal, a small bindi right between her eyebrows, and a small stone nath on her nose. She looks heavenly! You think how in front of such a beautiful girl, you look dust laden after falling off your bicycle.
"Aise mat dekho... tumhe pyaar ho jayega."
*:..。o○ ○o。..:**:..。o○ ○o。..:**:..。o○ ○o。..:*
Okay so the last one was inspired from @morally-gayy series.
There are going to be more. I can make them shorter though if you would want that.

Ooooh, if you're up for it, Secrets or Laughter for the drabble prompts? 👀
HELLO... thank you for the ask 💜 I may have gone overboard because I got really into this one so!! Enjoy!! Also it ended up being Both words. it started as One of them and ended being Both so enjoy that too!!
It's another night of watching over Mahiru as she recovers from fresh wounds, another night of watching over her battered friend slowly lift herself away from the brink of death.
Yuno watches her chest rise and fall under the blanket she brought, faint and weak but never wavering.
It's just another normal night of looking after her– until it's not.
"Can I tell you a secret?" Mahiru asks in the dead of night, voice quiet and raspy from disuse. She mumbles the question into her pillow, drifting between wakefulness and sleep.
"Sure." Yuno replies, brushing strands of hair away from her face with cold fingers. It's a beautiful colour– like honey, she thinks.
"If I were to fall asleep right now, and never wake up… I wouldn't really mind."
Yuno pauses, fingers stopping for a moment.
"Is that so?" The palm of her hand rests against warm skin. She mulls on her words before responding, "…Then, can I tell you a secret too?"
"Mhm," Mahiru nods gently back, forehead leaning into the touch. Yuno is careful not to agitate the bandages that wrap around her head.
"I haven't felt alive for a while, myself…" it's funny how when she says it out loud she can feel her skin growing cooler– clammy, even. "So it's a real shame, for someone so warm to feel that way, too."
Mahiru's eyes half-open at that, bleary from sleep. They blink slowly up towards Yuno.
"Really…?"
"Yeah."
It doesn't feel like a secret, to speak it into existence, when the thought has lived and breathed in her mind for a while. However, there's a solidifying reality to the words left hanging in the room between two people that know what they mean. It's a little scary, even. But despite that… there's something reassuring about choosing to do it with a sleepy, half-conscious Mahiru in the middle of the night.
A small silence follows before Mahiru replies, as she becomes a little more awake, as the sentences sink in. Her eyes search her friend, a doleful expression washing over her face.
"I didn't… I didn't know you… but you're always so upbeat, and– and so positive all the time, and–"
"–And so are you." Yuno cuts in, unable to help herself. Her words are bitterly cold, absolutely sub-zero in temperature, but…her eyes gaze back at Mahiru's with a little warmth. Tepid, even.
The room goes quiet once more, but words are silently spoken between the two prisoners. The resentment of being judged for the way that they love, and having that love bring them to a breaking point. The feeling of being selfish despite it all. It's a resounding sentiment of 'I understand you' that fills the empty space.
After what feels like hours, Mahiru speaks up.
"Yuno…thank you. For you to come and help me… even when you're feeling the way you are… you're not really a cold person, are you?"
She lifts her good arm out of the sheets and blankets to place a hand on top of Yuno's.
"Well–" she adds on, "you are cold, like, to the touch. But not on the inside! I–" she interrupts herself with a series of coughs, chest jolting with the force of it, "I… just know it."
"Hey, let's stop talking for a while, okay? Your chest sounds terrible and I don't want Shidou chiding me for doing a poor job at being your nightwatch." It's all she can think to say in response to such heartfelt words, which, in retrospect she decides is very shitty of her. So she chooses instead to double down and do what she does best: be silly and change the topic. "I can imagine it already– his puckered up face like he's just sucked on a sour lemon. 'Yuno, thank you for your help, but please… our poor patient can't keep handing out exceedingly nice comments! She'll die of complimentitis!' …did I do his voice right?"
It's a moment too late to realise that sending Mahiru into a fit of giggles is a terrible idea before it happens anyway. As expected, it goes from giggles to coughing fits, and Yuno wonders for a brief horrifying moment if she'll have to actually get Shidou and explain to him what happened…but thankfully, Mahiru handles it like a champ and composes herself. The trickles of burbling laughter that ebb away do find a way into Yuno's own chest, blooming into a small warmth. A very small warmth amidst the cold, but a warmth nonetheless.
"Are you okay?"
"I… I'm fine! You're just… very funny." Mahiru giggles again, quietly this time. "It did sound a lot like him, by the way. You're way too good at that!"
Yuno allows herself a smile.
"Okay, good…phew, I thought I was in trouble for a minute there!" She starts smoothing out the bedding, "but seriously, let's get you settled and off to sleep. You really need the rest, Mappi."
The patient in question ruins her good work by grabbing the corner of the sheets and blankets and peeling it away.
"Okay, but…let me warm you up."
"…Mahiru–"
"You're cold, aren't you? I'm not letting you sleep in that chair, that's way too uncomfortable." She begins to slowly shuffle to one side of the bed– which is something she absolutely shouldn't do in her state– but does so anyway, smiling at her handiwork. "See? There's loads of space… it can be like a sleepover!"
Yuno stares at the empty spot in the bed and wraps her icy hands around herself.
"I'm just gonna make you feel worse."
"That's impossible," she counters back confidently, "because you've already made me feel a lot better. So," one hand pats the mattress, "let me do the same. Please."
The warmth from earlier blooms a little more, and Yuno can't find it in herself to argue further. So she takes off her shoes and ever so carefully slides herself into the bed beside Mahiru. With the bed being a double and not a single, there's thankfully enough space for the two of them without having to worry about breaking the other arm by accident.
Mahiru turns her head to look at Yuno snug under the covers. "How does it feel? Is it warm enough?"
She thinks about it.
"…Yeah, it's nice." It's very nice, with both the bedsheets and the blanket and Mahiru next to her like a little heater. Yuno doesn't feel warm… but she doesn't as cold as she normally does. So in that way, it's a success.
"Good!" Mahiru's cheeks glow brighter, and she looks up at the ceiling, closing her eyes. "I'll make sure you don't freeze…"
"And I'll make sure you wake up in the morning."
"Mhm."
Yuno watches over Mahiru, making sure she drifts back to sleep, until her own eyelids start drooping and she falls asleep too.

fancy dinner out (Miss Taro/Honey Ryder)
I’m writing f/f double drabbles for the food prompt table! (I will post them on ao3 when they’re all done) Miss Taro doesn’t have a canon first name so I’ve decided it’s Olivia, she seems like an Olivia. I also played with the prompt a bit but I think that’s in the spirit of things . . .
Olivia Taro is on her usual evening walk trying to catch a glimpse of that alluring woman with the shell collection again. Every evening Olivia tries to work up the courage to talk to her. Today she manages to walk rather close by, hoping the other woman will initiate. "Would you like some fish?" Olivia turns, thinking she's in luck until she sees the large raw fish. "Is it . . . safe?" "Of course. It's mahi mahi," the woman says as if that should make everything clear. "By the way, my name's Honey." "Olivia . . ." She tentatively takes the fish. Perhaps Honey is used to eating straight from the ocean but Olivia's not sure how her body will react. Still, if she wants to get closer to Honey . . . She takes a bite. "Why, it's delicious!" Honey smiles brightly. "Have some more! A fish this big will rot quickly." Olivia sits gingerly in the sand and steels herself to ask a question. "Say, since you're feeding me tonight, would you fancy dinner out with me tomorrow? I know a nice restaurant." Honey seems shocked for a moment and Olivia wonders if she's made a mistake, but then her smile returns. "Yes I'd like that."

Prompt #20: Hamper
It was too soon to go back to work.
The thoughts replayed in my mind repeatedly as I watched half a dozen anglers struggle to hold onto one rod. But at the end of that rod was what we were searching for– something so menacing and impossible to ignore. Yet, the elusive titan hadn’t surfaced. Multiple reports of marlin, mahi-mahi, and shark carcasses grabbed our attention. Shark carcasses. That information alone was enough to deter most members of the guild. It was a dangerous mission.
I placed my hand over my chest. It had only been a few weeks since that damned goat kicked the life out of me. Fortunate enough to walk away with only a bruised rib and a handful of scrapes. I was better now– mostly. If I could make it through this job by being a simple bystander, I promised to rest in bed for another week. Maybe two.
But that was just wishful thinking, of course, because the captain seemed to read my mind and toss me into the ring. I guess it was my time to shine since the strongest were at it for bells and had nothing to show for it.
I removed my gear and traded it for a harness, not that it mattered much. Drowning wasn’t a possibility but they’d be able to drag me back if I strayed too far. He followed me to the edge of the ship and tossed a rope after me as I dove into the water. If they couldn’t see what they were up against since the damned thing wouldn’t show itself, it was up to me. I tied the rope around the harness and, though it wasn’t needed, inhaled a deep breath before breaking the surface.
Being the gimmick member of a guild had its ups and downs. A gift like mine was valuable for this line of work but it was the only thing most people saw in me. Without it, I wasn’t worthy. I worked twice as hard to prove otherwise. That stubborn attitude came back with a vengeance today. To hells with this injury– I would be the one to ensure this venture’s success.
The currents were easy to navigate, but visibility was low. Something I could work with. I swam in the direction of the line, following the faint glimmer as it reflected off the surface light, and dove deeper. I felt for any sort of hint– an abnormal swell, the sound of thrashing, fish frenzying.
It was quiet for several moments before I saw a flash of red and purple. The movement sent a swift current in my direction, pushing me away. Against my better judgment, I followed it until I saw something in my peripheral– two large, winged fins fluttered underneath me, the front of its body coming into view. Shaped like a serpent with a large antenna-like fin on its head, I recognized it immediately.
I reached for my rope and tugged on it, signaling the captain. I wanted out before it noticed me, but it was too late. Fighting with the anglers on the line wasn’t enough– the sight of me gave it another sense of purpose.
I tugged on the rope again. There was no chance in hells I’d outswim it, but they’d be able to pull my body in quick enough. At least, that’s what I hoped. I felt myself being jerked backwards and the serpent faced me directly. It rushed toward me, recognizing its prey. As much as I didn’t like being bait in this situation, following me meant the crew would shorten the line and give the fish less opportunity to escape.
Once they pulled me against the side of the ship, I surfaced and called out to everyone above. It was a Nepto Dragon. They weren’t uncommon in the slightest– aether released from the Calamity seeped into the ocean and took hold of regular fish, causing them to grow abnormally large. In this case, a Thalaos. Other than size, they were gifted with larger fins adorned with talons and a new set of sharp teeth. I had caught one working for the guild before, but it wasn’t close to this size.
As the dragon approached, it proved to be advantageous to the crew. But not to me. No longer interested in the lizard on a rope, it focused on staying alive by thrashing around and causing a ruckus. Anything to avoid being reeled in. Its long body provided plenty of momentum to fight back.
As I was being pulled from the water, the dragon swung hard against the ship and slammed into my already injured chest. The air escaped my lungs and I barely felt the pain as I fell unconscious.
It was definitely too soon to go back to work.

FFxivWrite 2022: #7 Pawn
[Date: 1569, Sixth Astral Era]
Cool stone pressed against Mahi’a’s cheek, a finger gently tracing over the carvings that decorated one of the bricks. Unlike the lower chambers, barely anything up here looked aged, most walls and floors having taken little to no damage in the years since the last calamity. It was probably somewhat eroded from the movement of the air within, but it wasn’t as if they had anything newer to compare it to.
“You need to let me handle this!”
The sound of their mother’s voice rang clearly from the room beyond, and Mahi’a’s interest piqued immediately. It wasn’t often that their arguments became loud, they had to take whatever chance they could to hear what was actually going on.
“Handle what, Mahi?” That was their father. He had also raised his voice, not quite matching hers, tone still showing some semblance of calm. “If you’re playing with him it’s going to do more harm than good, you can’t change your mind so suddenly and expect everything to be perfect.”
Mahi’a released a breath they’d been holding, fingers digging against the carvings. Of course it was about them, why would it have been anything else?
“I am building a relationship with my child -”
“Ten years, you’ve had ten years to build a relationship. I’m surprised he knows who you are, you’ve barely shown your face, never mind an interest.”
“Because of you.” Her voice was piercing, almost hurting Mahi’a’s ears despite the distance. They desperately wanted to step in and ask them to stop, yet fear kept them in place. Could they be to blame? They didn’t want to have a chance of finding out.
They weren’t sure if silence followed, or Aneir’a had simply lowered his voice again. Was that the sound of his voice they could barely make out, or the wind in the distance?
“You don’t understand,” Mahi spoke up again, prompting a frown from them. What had their father said? “We have this in common, I can’t allow it to go to waste. What other option is there? All you want is for him to be like you, can you bear to think he and I should have had the same chance?”
At least that explained the source of the argument. The accident only a few weeks prior, the success of their spellwork followed by immediate terror as they’d realised it had caught the book they’d been studying from alight. Surprisingly enough their mother’s fury had been fleeting once she realised the cause, growing proud of them instead.
It was odd. But… It was pleasant.
Voices quietened, and Mahi’a focused to try and hear more. If they only moved a little closer, perhaps they could catch -
Footsteps reached their ears before any audible words, and their body tensed. No, it wasn’t worth it, they quickly decided, scrambling to their feet proper in order to flee in the opposite direction.
If their father knew they’d heard, they’d have to talk about it. And then what? Disappoint him by explaining they were enjoying this change of pace? They already felt as if they were in the middle of something they didn’t quite understand.

Airell's Visions, part 3 - Wind
(Third chapter of the six-part story about Cain's mother; much like the previous chapters, this was originally written for a prompt.)
[ Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 ]
Wind
MAHI prompt words used: purpose, pair (Extra challenge: alliteration) Content notes: animal/beast death (non-graphic)
Tumblr media
The caravan had travelled for a long time before it made its way to the sands of Southern Thanalan: Airell had lost the count of days at some point. The band of refugees, joined together by a desperate desire to stay alive, had traversed through the Black Shroud but found no refuge there. It had felt almost like the forest itself didn't want them there - in addition to the cold-eyed Wood Wailers and beasts lurking in the shadows. Airell had seen plenty of unpleasant dreams during the journey through the woods.
Eventually, the group of ragtag travellers made its way into Southern Thanalan. A few cactuars and peistes watched them cross the desert but didn't approach, and the only thing that greeted them at the crag that was their destination was a lone torch. Still, their leader seemed to know what to do, and he stepped in front of the gate and shouted a loud greeting and a request for shelter. Soon enough, a couple of armed men appeared from inside the crag, gave their caravan a cursory glance, asked a few questions and then let them in. Airell was tired enough that the rest of the evening left little memory in her mind, and the only thing she remembers is feeling oddly comforted by the hard stone when she fell asleep.
The next days went quickly while getting used to the new surroundings and the people with whom Airell now shared a home. Little Ala Mhigo, as the crag was called, was inhabited by people who had escaped from Gyr Abania - much like her. They survived by hunting, fishing and foraging what little greens the arid wasteland could provide, and while life was hard, the strength of their bonds reminded Airell of the sisterhood. They worked together out of necessity, but also out of respect. Everyone was valuable, and if no one would help them, they would keep themselves alive.
Airell strived to do her part, too. Her legs hadn't fully healed from the time she spent captive - and perhaps never would - but she still tried to help by gathering firewood, cleaning, helping to prepare food and doing whatever she could. Doing so made her feel more like she had a purpose, which she had been lacking since she crawled out of the escape tunnel. It also made her feel more connected, which counterbalanced her fears of someone finding out her background. A quiet lass who had weak, scarred legs and who sometimes got lost in her thoughts could be an acceptable part of the community; a seer whose faith reminded everyone of an oppressor was less likely to become one. As long as no one would ask, she wouldn't tell. She hoped it would stay that way.
That is why she had ventured out to gather some herbs that day. She had found out that aloe grew in the area and knew that its leaves could be used for many things, and she had assumed that staying near the outer walls of the crag would keep her relatively safe. However, the assumption turned out to be wrong: a peiste had been skulking nearby, and things could have taken a very wrong turn had not an arrow flown through the air and killed the scalekin in one shot. Airell froze as she saw the beast crumble next to her.
"That was dangerous. Are you alright?" the woman asked before jumping down from a ledge, bow in her hand. "You're one of the newcomers, aren't you? It's not good to go outside without company or a weapon to keep you safe. The peistes rarely come this far, but the cactuars, regardless of what they look like, can be just as fatal."
"I'm sorry: I didn't mean to cause concern," Airell apologized. "I thought that I could help out by gathering some of the aloe here."
"Those cacti? They have use? I don't know a lot about herbs," the woman admitted. She Airell a pensive look and then smiled. "Would you like to tell me more while I skin and prepare this peiste to be taken inside?"
Her straight-forward yet amiable attitude surprised Airell, but she managed to summon a small smile and nod. The woman seemed satisfied and promptly started her task. While she removed the skin and all the other usable parts from the peiste, Airell told her how aloe could be used to treat severe burns and stomach issues and even nourish. The conversation continued even after she ran out of things to say about the plant, and Airell found herself liking the woman, who had introduced herself as Alys. Alys had sun-bleached hair and a traditional tattoo decorating her face and looked both fierce and kind. She had arrived at Little Ala Mhigo one year prior to Airell, and her main duties were procuring meat and keeping any beasts and bandits at bay. When Airell mentioned that she liked singing, Alys taught her her favourite song.
"I should introduce you to Brenda. She's only four summers old, but she loves music," Alys said as they returned to the crag. "Hearing new songs would make her feel very happy."
"I'm afraid that most songs I know aren't very happy ones," Airell replied meekly. "I wouldn't want to upset a child with tales of--"
"Mommy!"
Her response was cut off when a small child with bright white hair rushed to Alys and hugged her leg. Alys couldn't help laughing and gently petted the child's head.
"I'm back, Bren. Have you met Airell yet? She came with the caravan - you remember that one? - and guess what, she likes singing just like you. Mommy met her just outside…"
The introduction suddenly faded out as a vision took over Airell's senses. It felt like a rush of wind blowing against her face, but in a pleasant way: like a warm, revigorating breeze. For a moment, the mother and child seemed to blend together, and Airell saw a white-haired figure extend a shimmering hand towards her.
"From both of us, and for both you and him," the voice echoed as the figure seemed to put something onto her hand, gently close it and then push it against her chest. There was a pause, and the figure hummed a melody before speaking one last time. "It isn't easy, but it will end the way it should." It was rare for her visions to include spoken words, but the fact made the ones she heard feel all the more important. Like a promise. "…Airell?"
Alys's voice pulled her out of the vision, and Airell saw the huntress looking at her with mild concern.
"Is something wrong?"
Airell responded by shaking her head.
"I think I might be just a little tired," she explained.
Alys nodded slowly, but her expression shifted into something that was difficult to decipher. She gently ushered Brenda to join the other children and then offered to guide Airell to the sleeping area. Though Airell knew the way, she didn't refuse: somehow, she felt that there was more to the offer.
The inner depths of the crag were fairly empty due to the midday hour, and Alys took Airell to one of the secluded corners. They found her a blanket, and she sat down; only then Alys started to speak.
"I know you," she stated quietly, looking at Airell. "You are one of the Eyes of Nymeia."
Airell felt her breath catch in her throat.
"Reinholdt - my husband - and I saw you once when we visited Ala Mhigo; you were so young back then. You told Reinholdt that you saw him hand his soul to me in the form of a crimson light, and we found it sweet and laughed," Alys continued with a small, somewhat bitter-sweet smile. "We thought you were talking about Brenda, who I was carrying at that time. In the end, that crimson light turned out to be his soulstone, which he handed to me with his dying breath after telling me to flee."
Airell lowered her head. She hadn't initially recognized Alys due to the different clothes and the lines on her face, but the description brought back a memory from several years ago. A dashing man and a proud woman, forming a beautiful pair. Airell hadn't had the heart to tell him that she had tasted tears in her vision, indicating a goodbye. Neither of them spoke for a moment. Airell kept looking at the ground and waited for Alys's judgement: to be cursed at or to hear that her time at Little Ala Mhigo would be over. Neither happened.
"I don't blame you. You may have seen his fate, but you didn't decide it," Alys eventually said, and she knelt down to meet Airell's gaze. "I know there are many who think of the Mad King when they hear the name of your order. Still, I don't doubt that your visions come from the Spinner herself. There are many things in the world that are even more strange." She paused to chuckle. "Just remember not to live solely for your visions."
"I…" Airell struggled to find words. "Thank you." Alys's smile grew wider and warmer. "You're welcome. I ought to go and take care of the peiste parts now, but let's talk again later; maybe at the campfire tonight."
Airell nodded mutely and watched Alys head out. She didn't know how to express her gratitude properly - combined with the confusion and surprise she felt - but hoped she would have a chance to tell the huntress that she would like to be friends, if it was possible. Perhaps she could even teach her child one of the songs which she knew and wasn't sad.
She wrapped the blanket around her and soon fell asleep, dreaming again of the sea.

CSK vs KKR: The Day MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja Played a Prank on Chennai Fans
For Chennai Super Kings enthusiasts and cricket lovers alike, the reality of MS Dhoni's eventual retirement is a tough pill to swallow. At 42, IPL 2024 may very well mark his final season as a player, prompting fans to cherish every moment he graces the field.
Tumblr media
In a recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders, with CSK chasing a modest target at their home ground, the atmosphere at the MA Chidambaram Stadium was electric. As the third wicket fell and the equation dwindled to seven runs required from 19 balls, the anticipation reached a fever pitch as the crowd eagerly awaited Dhoni's arrival at the crease.
However, instead of immediately emerging from the dressing room, there was a brief moment of confusion when all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, fully geared up and helmet-clad, made a sudden appearance only to swiftly retreat. This playful act was orchestrated by none other than Dhoni himself.
It was a lighthearted prank orchestrated by "Thala" Dhoni and Jadeja, much to the delight of the spectators.
In a post-match interaction, Tushar Deshpande revealed the behind-the-scenes antics, disclosing that it was Dhoni's idea to tease the crowd.
"Dhoni bhai instructed Jaddu bhai, 'I will go in to bat, but you just act like you're going,'" Deshpande recounted with a grin.
"Dhoni just wanted to give them a glimpse. Watching Mahi bhai bat is always worth the price for fans," Jadeja chimed in.
The moment served as a reminder of Dhoni's endearing charisma and the special bond he shares with the Chennai faithful. While his playing days may be numbered, memories like these will continue to resonate long after he hangs up his gloves.

Day 5: Mahi Mahi
I think the research team took a bit of pity on me, or just had their fill of watching me shiver in the cold like a wretch. We traveled back down to warmer waters on our way to the next port to restock. Along the way, we actually encountered something unexpected. A pod of Yellow-Bellied Broad Heads followed us, trying to keep up with it as they elbowed and snapped at each other for the fish caught in the boat's wake. I decided to name the "winner" of the bunch Duff. He might've been the dominant of the pod, if all the females circling around him was any indication. I wish the lot of them many more moments of friendly competition like I witnessed today.

My AO3 name: lrthreads
Hi, neighbor! Thank you for looking at my prompts. This is my first time participating in Yuletide or really any fic event that isn't confined to a small fandom filled with people I mostly knew (ish). I hope you are having a good season!
These are the fandoms I listed prompts for. Under the read-more there may be spoilers for these canons, or mentions of triggering topics, even if they are only in my DNWs. If you aren't looking to write treats for Yuletide I suggest (with friendliness) that you just keep scrolling.
If there was some question in my mind about eligibility I messaged the admins and asked about it. Some of the fandoms are not in the tagset. (Yes, there are a lot of fandoms. If this is off-putting then I understand. But apparently pinch-hitters not signed up for Yuletide don't have to limit themselves to 6 fandoms and I elected to take that seriously and literally. I understand that nothing is guaranteed. :)
Alliance-Union - C.J. Cherryh
Almost Human (TV)
The Changeover - Margaret Mahy
Dark Nights (a Batman series with a canonically genderflipped Bruce Wayne)
Dunkirk (2017)
Ethan of Athos - Lois McMaster Bujold
Goncharov (1973) dir. Martin Scorsese - beelzeebub
Lord Ermenwyr Series - Kage Baker
The Martian (Andy Weir) [mentions headcanons and potential spoilers for another Andy Weir book, Artemis]
Memento Nora Trilogy - Angie Smibert
Newsflesh Series - Mira Grant
The Montmaray Journals - Michelle Cooper
Pink Carnation Series - Lauren Willig
Raising the Griffin - Melissa Wyatt
Shadows - Robin McKinley [also a prompt for Sunshine by the same author]
Swordspoint Series - Ellen Kushner
Tam Lin - Pamela Dean
DNW: rape; incest; underage sex onscreen or as a focus; whitewashing; a setting or POV wherein the idea that queer is always a slur is accepted; high school AU (or younger); religion of any kind as a main focus unless it's part of canon; priest kink; child sexual abuse even mentioned unless it's part of canon; Bad Guys/Aliens/Whatever Made Them Do It; main characters dealing with or perpetrating acts of transphobia, antisemitism, or racism; slavery AUs or slavery otherwise not present in canon; canon character/reader; sexual situations where a participant can't meaningfully consent; absence of reproductive choice in a way that's more stringent than canon; teacher/student; clinician/patient; public humiliation (especially sexual); domestic abuse; animal abuse
Things I encourage: letting your gender (make them trans! gender non-conforming! nonbinary!), neurodiversity, neurodivergence, and ancestry headcanons fly free. Also ones about attraction or lack thereof (e.g. being some level of aro, ace, or both; or queer; etc.).
Any format (standard, epistolary, experimental structure) is fine. Any tense or POV is fine.
If you want to write an unhappy or bittersweet ending, go wild unless otherwise specified.
I wrote the prompts below with canon as expected baseline but anything not in the DNWs is fine as far as AUs go.
Things I like: sports AUs, especially niche stuff like curling, archery, biathlon, axe throwing, pickleball (preferably not regular golf, although I do enjoy the scenery-porn and pratfall possibilities of golf courses, but mini-golf is fine). Tennis. Women's sports. Ballet AUs. Other dance AUs. Pacific Rim. Giant robots generally. Regular robots. Cryptids. Wrench wenches. Mechanics of any gender. People whose work requires them to wear coveralls. Currently wallowing deep in my Top Gun feelings (both movies). Science fiction and fantasy. Some mysteries. Casefic is usually fun. Queer history. Food history. Monster-fancying. Space. Multiverse stuff. Fics that make me feel soft and gooey inside. Fics that have a pointy darkness that I can enjoy when I'm in the mood for that. Crack taken seriously or not at all seriously are both good. I like a good academia AU but I know people who are in RL academia so I tend to notice if something is jarringly wrong. I'm garbage for royalty AUs. Love triangles are broke, polyamory is bespoke. Bring on the queerplatonic throuples or polycules or what-have-you. I like any fic that goes into the details of how something works or general obscure info, "How It's Made" style. Pittsburgh stuff. People wearing long coats or soft sweaters or kilts. Being stuck in an elevator.
NSFW is fine and a G rating is also fine. Aside from DNWs, I'll try to read most things once. Likes I haven't mentioned: hand kink, forearms, praise kink when the person giving the praise enjoys it at least as much as the person being praised.
Things that tend to knock me out of a sex scene: partners calling eachother "alpha" and "omega" instead of their names, someone saying "it's like you were made for me." Especially if the person having that said to them is being penetrated. (I like omegaverse, btw. Including non-trad. Especially non-trad if I'm being honest.)
Crack crossovers are my jam so if you need a character from a canon you like to fill a role go ahead (preferably not in an isekai or portal fantasy kind of way, unless that kind of crackiness or AU is the point). (If you decide to use SPN characters for this, no Sam, Dean, John, or Jack, please.) The appearance of canon characters who aren't specifically mentioned is fine unless they are listed as prompt-specific DNWs.
Exceptions to DNWs may apply if something is explicitly part of the prompt or canon. For example: The Changeover has rape in the background, which is referred to in the prompt. Ethan of Athos has past incest of some form in canon with Ethan/Janos and it might make sense to refer to it. One of the characters I listed in my Swordspoint prompt canonically has a history of being sexually abused as a child.
If you want to snoop my bookmarks go ahead: https://archiveofourown.org/users/lrthreads/bookmarks
Alliance-Union - C.J. Cherryh
In the tagset
Joshua Talley
Elene Quen
Damon Konstantin
They are (or were) a triad (romantic, sexual, queerplatonic, whatever; not necessarily equilateral) and I will die on that hill.
Interested in a look at that aspect of their relationship at any point in the timeline. (Talley's ability to consent is potentially somewhat compromised as part of canon events. If that's mentioned or alluded to I'm okay with that.)
Almost Human (TV)
not in the tagset
Dorian (Almost Human)
John Kennex
Worldbuilding (character)
I was sad when this got canceled. So, more John and Dorian interacting, please.
There was a throwaway mention of New Pittsburgh in one episode. What happened to Old Pittsburgh? What's New Pittsburgh like. Maybe John and Dorian have to go there, for reasons. (The reasons are that I live in Pittsburgh and I love it here. But in the fic the reasons could be whatever you want.)
The Changeover - Margaret Mahy
(in the tagset)
Sorensen Carlisle
Laura Chant
Kate Chant
Jacynth Close
No need to use all of these characters.
I've always felt like there was something sinister about Sorry. Was he involved in the Jacynth Close rape? Does this or something else come to light? What would the ramifications be?
I would prefer that Jacynth Close's rape not be recounted or alluded to too graphically.
Special note about (not) whitewashing: Laura is strongly implied to have non-white ancestry IIRC [when she talks about her hair texture]. It doesn't need to be a focus; just something to keep in mind.
Dark Nights (a Batman series)
Not in the tagset
I'm unsure what fandom to list this as as every specific use of this as a fandom is synned to Batman (Comics) or DCU (Comics) on AO3. However, the admins said by email that the Dark Nights continuity is distinct enough to be eligible.
Bryce Wayne (The Drowned)
https://archiveofourown.org/tags/The%20Drowned%20%7C%20Dark%20Earth-11%20Bryce%20Wayne/works
Aquawoman
No need to use all of these characters.
Bryce is a female version of Batman in an alternate universe (Dark Earth-11). In her canon she gets killed. I'd just like to read something where she's happy, more or less sane, and not dead, and maybe didn't murder Aquawoman. It can be a little dark because well, Bryce is a little dark. Understatement, I know. Or you can rewrite it so she won. Or do something with her being surgically altered to be able to breathe underwater that isn't quite so evil. Dealer's choice!
Dunkirk (2017)
not in the tagset but the admins told me it was eligible in an email
Collins (Dunkirk)
Peter Dawson (Dunkirk)
I feel like they had chemistry. A tiny bit of a connection. So, what might happen if they met up again in the future? Being together for a little while? A long-term queer romance? Is Collins still flying? Does Peter become a journalist? I don't have clear answers, but I like the idea of them being together and I like the idea of Peter as a journalist (but I'm flexible). Trauma is speedrunning human connections and they definitely had that.
Ethan of Athos - Lois McMaster Bujold
(in the tagset)
Ethan Urquhart
Terrence Cee
Janos (Vorkosigan Saga)
Worldbuilding (Character)
No need to use all of these characters.
Far-ish future fic where Ethan and Terrence are grandfathers. What's it like to live in a society of young telepaths? Does Janos hate it? Has he grown up at all? Is he surprisingly good at adapting? Are Ethan and Janos's dads still around for this?
The Athosians all seem to be fairly cis/masc. Feel free to make some of them explicitly less so.
Goncharov (1973) dir. Martin Scorsese - beelzeebub
Not in the tagset but okayed by the admins.
Katya (Goncharov (1973))
Sofia (Goncharov (1973))
I'm obsessed with Katya and Sofia's dynamic, the apple symbolism, and the newsboy. I'm interested in any take on them: during canon, post canon, AU, whatever. What with the apple symbolism and everything I'd consider religion to be part of canon if you want to take it that way.
Lord Ermenwyr Series - Kage Baker
(in the tagset)
Eliss (Ermenwyr series)
Pentra Smith
Post-canon fic. Pentra mentoring Eliss; Pentra and Eliss comparing their choices. (Since it's strongly implied that Eliss will marry Krelan, but that isn't Pentra's jam.) Pentra doing mapping stuff. Eliss doing her lookout stuff. Feel free to include Krelan or anyone else from this setting. (I love the mainline Ermenwyr series characters, including Svnae and Ermenwyr and the characters associated with Mrs. Smith's inn.) The only characters I would prefer not to see are from Krelan's birth family or the family he served, unless they show up to give him their blessings and that's it, or something else that doesn't involve bodily harm. Happy endings only, please.
(This canon has mostly-backgrounded slavery, depending on what part of it you're looking at. If it comes up, fine, but do not want Pentra, Eliss, or any crew from the Bird of the River enslaving anyone. Or any Yendri enslaving anyone.)
The Martian (Andy Weir)
(not in the tagset; the movie is, but this prompt references book stuff; okayed by email from admins)
Mark Watney
Rick Martinez
Marissa Martinez
No need to use all of these characters.
Rick and Mark being together after (book) canon. As friends, bros, romantically, or queerplatonically (preference for the latter two). Strong preference for Marissa Martinez (Rick's wife) still being alive and happy, unless she dies peacefully after a long life. Also I feel like neither Martinez would cheat but if you think you can sell me on it, go ahead. Polyamory (V or triad) or late-life romance welcomed (could be Mark and Marissa too). Martinez is explicitly identified as Catholic so if this comes up, understandable, but I would prefer that there not be a lot of Catholic Church rules-lawyering stuff.
If you read the ebook extras where Commander Lewis talks to Watney about a private space venture, feel free to work that in. (Spoilers for Artemis: some people have a headcanon that the groundskeeper is Watney, so again, feel free to work that in. Or not; I'm not strongly attached to it.)
(The ebook extras have been pulled out of the ebook and the one with Lewis does not appear to be online as text; I looked in all the legit places I could find. Supposedly it is still part of the audiobook edition.)
If you want to blend in movie stuff I liked the movie too, even though this is a book-focussed prompt. If you do no movie stuff whatsoever that is also fine.
Memento Nora Trilogy - Angie Smibert
not in the tagset, not on ao3
Aiden Nomura
Velvet Kowalcyk (aka Anne Marie Kowalcyk)
Winter Nomura
No need to use all of these characters.
Aiden and Velvet should have stayed together. Like, Spike and Velvet are sweet, and Sati is cool I'm sure (IIRC we barely see her in canon and frankly if you told me she only exists because someone insisted Aiden be romantically paired off I wouldn't be surprised), but Aiden! and! Velvet! Thrift shop queen plus corporate princeling.
Does Velvet ever remember Aiden? Do they get together when they're older, or not? Do they talk about how Violet chose to forget him? Can they get over that? Second chance romance y/n?
The Montmaray Journals - Michelle Cooper
(not in the tagset)
Simon Chester
Julia Stanley-Ross
Toby FitzOsborne
No need to use all of these characters.
How did they get together; or rather, how did Simon get together with Julia and Toby. How do Simon and Julia feel about eachother? I don't think hatred is consistent with canon but there sure is a mystery about how they got there. How does Simon feel about being the father of the next king of Montmaray, given his own parentage? Was that calculated or did Toby and Simon and Julia just decide to let the chips fall where they may? Were they ever uncertain about making that choice, if it was deliberate?
Newsflesh Series - Mira Grant
in the tagset
Rebecca "Becks" Atherton
Rick Cousins
Aislinn "Ash" North
Georgette "Buffy" Meissonier
No need to use all of these characters.
This is really four separate prompts. But if inspiration strikes and you see a way to combine some or all of them, have at it.
(1) Becks doesn't die. No need to specify how. I'd just like something where she's still alive. Ideally as actual Becks and not a clone, but that could be interesting too. Speaking of Becks and clones ... she used to be a Newsie. What if she starts digging into the possibility of other clones, either as a Newsie, Irwin, or both? (We know Emily Ryman had one. And I often wonder about Kelly Connolly.)
(2) Character study of Rick. What's the vice presidential candidate experience like? How and why does he make the decisions he does after he's elected? Does he lie to himself about them? How much? What's his life like after canon?
(3) What are the surviving members of the Feedback squad up to? Slice of life or whatever. I just wish there were more stories about them. Don't kill any more of them, please.
(4) Buffy figures out that Shaun and George are an item. She never tells anyone. (Canonical adopted sibling incest is a part of this prompt. If you use another prompt and it makes sense for them to know about Shaun and Georgia that's fine.)
Pink Carnation Series - Lauren Willig
not in the tagset
Penelope Deveraux aka Penelope Staines
Alex Reid
Anything after their book (Betrayal of the Blood Lily). Fluff, please, and them being happy. Yes, Penelope cheated on her useless first husband with Alex, but I don't want something that punishes them for that in any way. (Beyond maybe some judgy looks.) Let my wild child fictional daughter be and stay happy.
Raising the Griffin - Melissa Wyatt
not in the tagset, not on AO3
Alex Varenhoff (aka Alexei)
Sophie
What happens to them in the future? Do they get together? Do they stay friends? Does Rovenia keep its monarchy? (If what's her name who took Alex's v-card shows up please let her not be too annoying or important to the fic)
Shadows - Robin McKinley
in the tagset
Maggie
Takahiro
Worldbuilding (character)
No need to use all of these characters.
I've always felt like Shadows was a stealth prequel to Sunshine. Like, Sunshine is after the collapse, and Shadows is before. Feel like connecting them? Maybe Sunshine or another character is doing research. (Like Aimil, Pat, or the goddess of pain, or Sunshine's mom.) Or Sunshine or one of her little brothers are bored in history class and half listening to a lecture. Or Kenny (one of the little brothers) comes across a mention of Maggie or Taks while in undergrad or law school or practicing Other Law. (Exception to DNWs for a high school setting if you go this route.)
Swordspoint Series - Ellen Kushner
In the tagset
Katherine Talbert
Susan Ffoliot
Marcus Ffoliot
Artemisia Fitz-Levi
No need to use all of these characters.
Katherine, Susan, and Marcus are canonically a triad (or as Theron puts it, a ménage). I'd love to see a look at that. Getting together, slice of life, whatever. Doesn't have to be equilateral.
But! What happens to Artemisia? Is she Susan under a different name? This is a crack headcanon of mine. Or maybe she's not, and she's just off being a successful playwright. Artemisia's absence from The Fall of the Kings just seems so noticeable, especially after the TPOTS ending. No unhappy endings for anyone, please.
Marcus was canonically sexually abused as a child. Obviously this something he's still reckoning with in TPOTS. How you approach this would be up to you, but I wouldn't want it to be the main focus.
Tam Lin - Pamela Dean
(in the tagset)
Christina (Tam Lin)
Molly DuBois
Robin Armin (Tam Lin)
No need to use all of these characters.
What happens to Tina and Molly after canon? Do they stay in touch? Does Molly stick with Robin? Travel the world as a marine biologist? Write best-selling books about tidepools? Does Tina become a doctor?
FWIW I headcanon Tina as autistic but don't insist on it.
