READ ALL ABOUT IT* Part 3.
In our final installment of ‘read all about it’ we so happy to share this article, showing a step by step transformation of Lily Collins from pure and pretty to the frighteningly frail Fantine in her final scene of BBC’s Le Miserables.
The article below showcases the work of Makeup & Hair Designer Jacqui Fowler and gives the audience an insight into how so many subtle details are used to breakdown ‘Fantine's’ look across the show :

Crem de la crem*
Putting Make-up on oily or acne prone skin every day for the purpose of film & TV can often aggravate underlying problems leading to not only discomfort for your actor but the impossible task of covering up lumps & bumps on close ups.
Adding ‘Sudocrem Skincare Cream’, a mildly medicated moisturiser can help maintain skin health and keep those pesky pimples at bay whilst keeping your actors skin super soft and supple. It leaves the skin feeling moisturised but not tacky and will work under the make-up to keep your actors skin looking and feeling smooth.
It comes in a perfectly petite size, great for your Make-up Station & set bag a- like. We here at The Make-up Mill think this is soon to be a kit essential, especially after boozy, sugary indulgence over the Christmas period!

Sweating Buckets*
Working in hot climates (something we at The Mill have just experienced first hand) means you have real sweat in abundance pouring from your actor. When you work in colder climes but want it to look like the middle of the Sahara desert creating a long lasting, realistic and skin safe sweat effect isn't always easy. Some sweats are full of glycerine which can be irritating to skin and some simply vanish after one take.
We at The Mill think we may have found the solution to your sweaty betty blues. The big brand on the market ‘Ultra’ have an amazing range of everything from pus, to dirt, snow and sweat. What we love about their sweat is it is easy to apply, can be decanted into smaller tubs for on set and has a great real sweat effect without looking greasy. It beads nicely and if you want to go for gold with your perspiration use it as a base and stipple a small amount of RCMA’s Sweat & Tears over the top, the two products work so well together.
No more need to work up a sweat when picking your perfect perspiration.

Rave about the shave*
Shaving actors and SA’s facial hair is standard through every single makeup call, getting rid of those scruffy sideburns for the 1920′s or shaping up a tash for the 1970′s, we MUA’s do have to tackle all manner of facial fuzz.
Now the Phillips One Blade Razor has been a saviour in crowd rooms and makeup buses alike, taking away fuzz in an instant, from the biggest beard to the tiniest bit of stubble, that One Blade really is a kit essential but even the One Blade needs a little extra help when it comes to creating that super smooth shave.
To stop the skin being irritated after weeks of continuity shaving simply prep the facial hair and skin with Shaving Oil. Yes... oil!  It doesn't damage your One Blade and makes shaving absolutely effortless, nourishing the skin and preventing it from breaking out right before the actor steps on set.
We especially love ‘Dr K’s Handmaid Shave Oil’, as it is all natural and made from Castor Oil which is used to provide a protective layer between the razor and the skin, as human skin does not easily absorb this oil, it has the effect of providing a cushion, which results in a close shave that is non-irritating.
Added to the mix is Apricot Kernel Oil, which contains vitamins A and C (and essential fatty acids) is used to enrich the skin (or hair if you choose to leave some stubble behind). Finally Peppermint Oil, due to it's antiseptic properties, gives the skin a fresh and clean feeling.
This tiny addition to your barbering kit will absolutely change your shaving game, keeping your actors happy and lumps & bumps at bay!

Velvety Smooth*
No no we haven’t changed The Mill’s subject matter to Andrex Toilet Roll, as cute as those lovable Labradors are were are in fact talking about the brand that has everyone talking in the makeup world, DHC. Based in Japan their natural products offer everything from skin care to make-up and we here are head over heels for one product in particular.
‘Velvet Skin Coat’ is sold as a make-up primer, which it is brilliant for however what is more exciting about it is that it can be used on top of make-up to create a velvety soft veil over the make-up. It is fantastic on black skin where you want to control the oil but it still keeps that natural glow that makes black skin so dimensional and tonal.
Apply your favourite base, allow it to settle and simply pat or buff a light covering of this silky saviour and see your actors skin turn to pure velvet that Kings and Queens would desire.
We have already reviewed DHC’c Olive Oil cotton buds on The Mill so as you can see this brand is one of our favourites! Check them out online or in any large Topshop.

Over the Moon...*
...or not when you drop your favourite powder compact or eye shadow palette and it smashes to smithereens. Slow motion heart break sets in as you see it tumble to the floor and crumble before your very eyes.
The age old technique of bringing life back to your crumbly concealer using Isopropyl alcohol does work a treat but it can leave some products a little on the dry side and even loosing their intensity.
Now something out of this world has landed at The Make-up Mill to transform those broken blushers into beautiful blushers, that something is ‘Moon Mousse’. It uses space age technology and all natural ingredients to revitalise your make-up mishaps whilst not using alcohol.
It really does bring your products back to life and is also fascinating to watch! You’ll be thanking your lucky stars when Moon Mousse makes it into your make-up kit.

Rapunzel let down your hair...*
Visiting new cities opens your eyes not only to the culture of the place but to new exciting Make-up & Hair brands. Stockholm born ‘Rapunzel of Sweden’ is a go to place for hair extensions, fantastic hair products and so much more. I recently bought their ‘Root Powder’ which is great for when you need lift of the roots for vintage or period hair styles but it also gives incredible grip for when you are applying extensions to your actors hair. It is the strongest, most root boosting powder I have tried.
But what is also exciting is their ‘Hair Extension Tapes’, you can literally tape hair extensions to your own hair. No need for glue, no need for bulky clips or heat bonds. So this got me thinking, how amazing would these be for an actor who you put extensions in their hair every day? No back-combing, no glue and no worry of the head looking bulky because of clips! It is a no brainer.
The tape causes minimal damage to the hair, is super strong and is reusable! If you don’t believe me check out their instagram page https://www.instagram.com/rapunzelofsweden/ to see this amazing tape in action.

Step into the Light*
We at The Makeup Mill are all about education, heck, its why we get these machines up and running every week to bring our readers as much product and general Makeup knowledge as we can.
So much so we feel it imperative to shine a bright light on this fantastic new book, just released this weekend!
Color Theory for the Make-up Artist: Understanding Color and Light for Beauty and Special Effects analyses and explains traditional colour theory for fine artists and applies it to the make-up artist.
Colour theory is definitely something we Make-up Artists are taught at school, but when we step out into the world of work it can sometimes get lost amongst stylistic preferences and having that little bit of knowledge about colour can take a make-up from flat to fantastic, with very little work.
This book is suitable for both professionals and beginners who wish to train their eye further to understand and recognise distinctions in colour.
It explains why we see colour, how to categorise and identify colour, relationships between colours, and it relates these concepts to beauty and special effects make-up.
The book teaches the reader how to mix flesh tones by using only primary colours, and explains how these colours in paints and make-up are sourced and created. It also discusses the reason for variations in skin colours and undertones, and how to identify and match these using make-up, while choosing flattering colours for the eyes, lips, and cheeks.
Colours found inside the body are explained for special effects make-up, like why we bruise, bleed, or appear sick. Ideas and techniques are also described for painting prosthetics, in addition to using colour as inspiration in make-up designs. The book also discusses how lighting affects colour on film, television, theatre, and photography sets, and how to properly light a workspace for successful applications.
We at The Mill can’t wait to add this book to our collection and we hope will shed light on any grey areas when it comes to Makeup mishaps and lighting conundrums.
