I have been meaning to translate the voice actor interviews that came with the Kirby blu-rays, but real life is killing me.

In the meantime, some tidbits

The vibe overall was super fun and chill. Everyone recorded in one room together, and would go out to eat after and even go on trips together. Everyone has a lot of fond memories of working on the show!

Kenichi Ogata (Dedede) calls Naoki Tatsuta (Escargon), "Tacchan". Naoki calls him Kenichi-senpai

Kenichi adores the character of Dedede and how he can be villainous but also cute. He and Naoki would often ad lib silly things as their characters just as stress relief because Naoki jokes he could barely keep up.

Kisaichi Atsushi (Meta Knight) says he was often nervous, and once when he was having trouble keeping up the "cool voice" for longer scenes, the voice director told him "try harder" lmao

He also can't get over MK being round. So round. "Sharp, but round. Cool, but round"

Makiko Ohmoto (Kirby) says Kirby isn't really speaking aloud when he transforms and says attack names, but it's more "the voice of his heart". She wanted to give that voice more of a teenager feel.

When singing as Kirby, she goes "three octaves higher" to make it even more ear piercing lol, and really enjoyed being Devil Kirby.

i think one of the bigger tells we have in the kirby fandom for whether someone is genuinely trying to share information or is just trying to start slapfights about headcanon is the phrase “kirby is canonically nonbinary in japan”. i’ve almost never seen that phrase used as anything other than code for “your headcanon is wrong” - when it is said earnestly, it’s almost always because the person saying it was just repeating it from elsewhere.

*for those just tuning in: kirby isn’t canonically anything in japan. his gender is strictly unknown and this is a very intentional choice on HAL’s part. japanese is what is known as a “pro-drop language”, which means that pronouns of all classes can be omitted from standard linguistical use. this is particularly true of second- and third-person pronouns; saying “he” or “she” often sounds unnatural in speech. you could give a whole description of someone in japanese without ever inferring their gender, and this is exactly what HAL does with kirby. it’s a completely normal and mundane function of the language - kirby isn’t even the only character who is referred to this way! several major and minor characters never have their gender referred to in any way, including meta knight for example.

the only slightly gendered thing about kirby is his first-person pronoun: he uses “boku” in japanese on the rare occasions that he speaks. boku is a typically masculine pronoun, but it gives off an informal, young boy kind of feel, and is commonly used by all genders in media.

kirby, like a lot of nintendo’s early protagonists, is meant to be something of a blank slate for the player to project what they want on. in external media like comic books, twitter posts, etc., kirby is often shown participating in both girls-only and boys-only events. makiko ohmoto has said that she sees people imagining kirby as a boy or as a girl and that she’s fond of any interpretation.

(for a bit of an added fun fact, this is a large part of why female kirby interpretations are so popular in the japanese fandom - gijinka or otherwise!)

you ever think about the kirby 25th anniversary orchestra in osaka where makiko ohmoto asked sakurai if meta knight was kirby's older brother or father? and sakurai explained that if he confirmed or denied anything it would be taken as official and that might cause problems for mr. kumazaki so it’s a secret? and ohmoto went on to say that at least for her, meta knight is "someone who always watches over kirby”? i think about that a lot

Ever heard of Corrector Yui? Have you ever watched it?

I don't have many impactful memories of it, truth be told, but yes I have. That anime is the evidence that your Magical Girl series CAN be heavy on the sci-fi aspect WITHOUT losing its charm and playfulness (this shade was aimed specifically at Seinen Magical Girls).

I'm impressed at how this anime unknowingly predates Winx Club's Tecna by having an Internet Fairy as its heroine. I find it hilarious that if it weren't for a computer-illiterate girl, we most likely wouldn't have one of the most formative characters of our youth.

Also, did you know that Kasuga Yui was voiced by Makiko Ohmoto, who voices none other than Kirby*? You've read that right.

*Except for the Drama CD, though; that was Kawata Taeko (seiyuu for Amy Rose, Cinnamoroll, Shizuka Joestar and Chypre) playing the role instead.

Kirby Fan Cast With Reasoning (Kirby and Friends Edition)

Kirby: Makiko Ohmoto, she's voiced Kirby since Crystal Shards back in 1999 and Kirby doesn't need to actually speak words so there'd be no need to dub over his lines.

King Dedede: Ted Lewis, he voiced Dedede in the Kirby anime's English dub and is responsible for a multitude of memes. Alternatively, Juno Songs does a great Ted Lewis impression in their Dedede with Lyrics videos

Meta Knight: Eric Stuart, he voiced Meta Knight in the Kirby anime's English dub and now I cannot unhear the Spanish accent he gave Meta Knight. Alternatively, Juno Songs does a great Eric Stuart impression in their Meta Knight with Lyrics videos.

Bandana Waddle Dee: This is the stickler... I'm honestly not sure who I'd want to voice him.

Adeline: Karen Fukuhara, she could probably pull off the right amount of spunk for Adeline (she voices Glimmer in the 2018 She-Ra reboot and the titular character in Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts fyi).

Ribbon: Cassandra Lee Morris, cause I like Cassandra Lee Morris and had to stick her in somewhere.

Gooey: Seth Rogen, I know that a lot of people don't like him but he already voiced one stupid blue blob, lets have him voice a second one.

The Animal Friends: If they don't speak, Dee Bradley Baker. If they do speak... I'll decide later.

Prince Fluff: SungWon Cho (possibly better known as ProZD) doing his Deep Authoritative Voice because I think it would be funny contrast.

Daroach: Xander Mobus, whatever voice is needed for this role, I'm sure he can bring it.

I have a lotta songs and it's difficult to pick just one??? Uhhhh, if I had to pick, I will go with Maximum Angst for YokoJuno and thus, Wordless Stele. It's a doomed romance, that one, after all, they're only going to be torn apart. Simply just by the veil of death, helllish vines dragging the peach queen down to the underworld as she clamors to keep Juno's wings pristine and white...

May they never reunite. A desire to leave the conflict with one another.

Juno has various Chinese emperor/empress influences, she is that queen of birds and Yoko is that tailwind who flies alongside her.

Rau! I'll talk about her. This Build S/I is just this cute and affectionate rag doll cat, sitting in the bakery window, waiting to greet customers that enter her domain. Meowing in concern: "Do you like the food! Good! I'll get you more!" and always willing to chat or sit in silence.

12.) if you had to compare your s/i to an already existing fictional character, who would it be?

The only one that comes to mind is Leoring! Just a happy lil fella. I based him off of a mixture of Cinnamoroll and Kirby. He's a being born of positive energy like Kirby and just likes baking and cooking like the both of them and yeah! If he had a VA, it would be Kawata Taeko, who voices Cinnamoroll or Ohmoto Makiko who voices Kirby Lil clips of both Kirby and Cinnamoroll that remind me of wittle boi

How do you think a movie would approach Kirby's voice? Obviously we've evolved past the need of "poyo" Kirby, so what would you go with?

he will just talk like a normal person, like in the mangas or light novels

his dialogue would be written in a childish way, because he is a child and he would speak in such manner

obviously makiko ohmoto won't be capable to voice him in english, so they would have to pick someone else for that. i don't think it's impossible. they just don't need to aim to replicate the same high pitched cutesy voice because english dubs rarely get this type right. giving him more neutral pitched kid voice is the way to go.
