Jeramie, who was still injured from their first encounter with Dugded, was offered by Gira to stay the night at his castle. It's not like this was something he hadn't done before; he's slept over multiple times over the past 2 years, yet this time for some reason all the spare beds and mattresses were gone.

"It's fine," Jeramie said upon seeing Gira's concerned face, "I can just sleep in one of my hammocks."

He made a hammock next to Gira's bed, and slept soundly.

…Until the hammock suddenly broke and he fell to the cold, hard floor, waking both him and Gira up.

"Jeramie!" Gira yelled, "Are you alright?"

Jeramie got up slowly, wincing a bit yet pretending he was alright. "I'm fine," he said, "That rarely ever happens, so I can just make another—"

"You can sleep in my bed!"

"…Hm?"

Gira blushed, "I-I mean if you want to. I just don't want to risk you getting hurt again…" The king of Shugoddam looked down on the floor, obviously thinking about their last battle.

Jeramie snapped him out of his thoughts by holding his hand. "Well now, if the king is offering, I suppose I can't refuse, can I?"

That night, both slept soundly.

hi hello i present to you keeper characters and random other characters they are similar to:

sophie - percy jackson. neither wanted to be a “leader”, were forced into the role till they carried it with pride, uprooted from their original lives and told these insane truths that finally make all the weird shit make sense, can’t help but fall for people who they think don’t like them back but do but it takes forever to realize

fitz - mako from legend of korra. both unnecessarily hated, slightly protective older siblings, dated main character and didn’t end up with her, queer coded, angry all the time

keefe - sirius black from harry potter. hides behind jokes, in love with his best friend, emotionally inept (but working on it), 0 self esteem or self worth, parental abuse and trauma, doesn’t believed they can be loved.

biana - rarity from my little pony. generosity, loves her friends to the end and back, loves fashion, acts of service/being there for people, changes perspective on what beauty really is, gorgeous

tam - evan rosier from harry potter (actually MY mauraders tv show that i made in my head). the only thing they truly love is their twin sisters, would do anything to protect them (even though they are not at all helpless) & nothing is “too far” when it comes to it, CHOSE to be on their parents bad side/outcast when their sisters were forced out, ruthless, mistrusting, & funny asf

alvar - loki from the mcu (no redemption arc). i haven’t watched the show but based off prior knowledge, jealousy for his younger brother, looked over by his parents, does terrible things because of it. however fitz is NOT thor and alvar is not half as hot.

Whatever you do, don't think about mako watching his parents burn, helpless, unable to help, frozen in terror. Don't think about mako curling up around bolin on the streets, terrified, alone, cold, sitting up watching and waiting all night so no one tries to hurt or take them away during the night or steal their belongings.

Don't think about him terrified to bend, to wield the element that killed his parents, but too cold to have the luxury of choice. Don't think about him hating his bending, terrified of it, terrified he will lose control of it and become a monster.

Don't think about mako alone and afraid and cold and hungry. Don't think about mako and bolin shivering, huddled together in the freezing cold -- it's too cold for mako to bend and he hasn't mastered the breath of fire.

Don't think about mako curled on the street, unable to get up but knowing if he doesn't, he and bolin will starve and maybe there won'd be a next day. Don't think about him wrenching bread away from somone else, knowing it might mean that person will go hungry, but knowing at least that he and bolin won't starve that night. they'll have enough to make it through to the next sunrise. Don't think about mako taking blankets and forcing himself not to care who will go cold who will go hungry because he and bolin have that blanket and have that bread.

Don't think about him wishing and hoping that they had family that would come for them and loved for them and find them. but as the weeks turned into months turned into years, he knew that they had no family, or any family that they did have didn't want them. don't think about him convincing himself that they were either dead or he didn't want anything to do with them either.

Don't think about mako forgetting the way his parents looked, all he can remember is the burned charred lumps of their faces, the way they looked as they died.

Don't think about Mako turning to the gangsters and the triads because they are the only ones who don't care about child labor laws enough to hire a child. Don't think about what mako had to do to buy his and bolin's way out of the triads, to buy their freedom. because he knew too much, he was an insider, and there's no way they would let someone with that knowledge walk away unscathed. Don't think about his desperation to stay in the pro-bending tournament, knowing that the prize money from each match the only thing keeping him and bolin from the streets, keeping them from the triads. because how else would they pay off the cost of that freedom?

Seriously, whatever you do don't think about mako because it will fucking HURT

What if I said Makorra was the reason Korrasami took off the way it did?

See... Korra and Mako definately were a couple who cared for and admired each other but weren't exactly equipped for a terribly healthy romance in the long run. Especially when it came to where their loyalties lay in handling the Water Tribe's civil war.

Of course, part of this was a lack of parental guidance over the matters of the heart. Korra being locked up in a compound and Mako looking after Bolin on the streets certainly didn't help.

Thus remaining just friends was the best they could go for.

This crash course in love, in my view, lead Korra to take things more slowly from here out and let the pot boil slowly but surely with whomever struck her fancy next. It helped that Asami's turbulence with Mako helped as she too took things more easy.

No doubt it'd be more explicit of a thing without Nick being obtuse about it (considering their neglect of the show, you'd think they'd shrug it off) but it weirdly uses that "don't show your hand" mandate to it's advantage.

See... I generally stan the romantic subplots of Books 1 and 2 insofar as they are organic to the characters themselves rather than a degree from the author in part of what mentioned above. However, I understand why they're not terribly popular.

Whether you like messy teenage romances or not, there is a sort of dissonance when it comes to marring them with the threat of Amon's Equalists and Unalaq's dealings with Vaatu. The messy matters of the heart don't feel nearly as worth investing interest in compared to, say, saving Republic City from civil unrest turned ugly or the greatest threat to the Avatar itself from centuries past.

It's sort of something that ATLA avoided with its episodic approach even when it got more plot heavy in Book 3's final half, sort of segmenting any interpersonal drama from major plot developments. Basically, for "Air and "Spirits," having both wasn't the "you got chocolate in my peanut butter" moment they were likely attempting.

So when it comes to Book 3 and 4 having Korrasami being a lowkey build-up, I can see why even the writers gravitated towards it in exploring the pair by letting it simmer as a friendship. They wouldn't try to get together but often find themselves grow close in the moments they shared.

Thus you had Book 4 when Korra writes to Asami mainly and then is the first to greet Ms. Sato. Absense makes the heart grow fonder after all.

It's a weird happy accident when by executive mandate, Korra and Asami's growing relationship was a subplot that was seeding into the narrative when opportunity arose rather than ever feeling like a rogue ingredient.

It's sort of why I don't agree fully with the notion of LoK not being "planned out" when sometimes, letting the chips fall where they may can make for little miracles like these.

Rambling about why I chose the beasts that I did under the cut.

Originally I was gonna use yellow tangs for Sisyphus but then I was looking at his design and was not sure how I would deal with his face while going with a fish for the tail. And then I remembered that jellies' tentacles kinda look like the way his hair does in the concept art, and while I was looking for yellow jellies I saw a lion's mane and went. Yes, that one. Very happy with the way it looks it was a lot of fun to draw.

Minos was originally gonna be a deep sea giant isopod, but after I remembered that jellyfish existed I considered going with a sea snake, couldn't find ANY naturally white snakes, thought about an albino moray, then found out about white ribbon eels (which are related to morays, very cool). He's technically the only fish unless you count the V models jkgjkhgf

Gabriel was originally gonna be a paradise/mustard gas betta but I ended up deciding that if I ever drew/wrote about them all I would be so annoyed about there being just. One freshwater fish in the ocean with saltwater creatures just,, bothered me so much that man would be In Pain. So I decided to look for color changing sea creatures, most cephalopods obviously, and one of the first ones that came up was the Caribbean reef squid. I checked to see if they could be red and they sure could so I decided that worked.

Also, his crown(?) is meant to look like gorgonian coral.

V1 was originally going to be a shortfin mako because they're slightly faster, but the silhouette was so similar that I was STRUGGLING to find differences. Longfin wasn't much better though. Regardless, mako shark because they're known for being the fastest shark and among the fastest fish.

V2 is a great white because strong scary y'know y'know. I considered dunkleosteus for the same reasons, but switched to a shark because V1 was also gonna be one and I wanted them to mostly match.

V1 and V2 both have two sailfin sails because 1. big fin to mimic their wings, 2. fast fish. Very cool.

Also the doodles on them are meant to show that the sails can fold back for speed and open to stop quick. The other one is to show that they can swap the tails out for legs if they wanted to.

sorry sometimes i think about mako and my heart hurts so much. this kid raised himself and his brother on the streets in homelessness and utter poverty from eight through fifteen, promptly after seeing the violent death of his mother and father. he turned to the triple threats because they couldn't survive as a pair of wretched kids without any adult support, and the environment forced him to turn into the exact character that killed his parents in a terrible twist of irony. and after sheer-fucking-luck hits and they aren't homeless anymore, their livelihood wavers on the outcome of what's a literally game to everyone but them; and after things are finally starting to look up and their team is going places and things just might be okay, his gradually stabilizing world unceremoniously expands and everything goes to shit.

and the city that chewed him up and spat him back out, ruined him as a child and took away his ability to stay afloat in a true sense of normalcy as an adult — when it's on the verge of destruction and falling to pieces before his eyes, he gives himself to save it with the full expectation to die. he went from the kid who didn't and couldn't care about anything outside of himself and his brother, to finding redemption for his younger self in his police work despite its injustice against him, to willingly sacrificing himself to a world that had never loved him.

he's a desperate people pleaser, socially and emotionally stunted for the adult he had to be as a kid, unable to navigate interpersonal relationships easily yet still trying his damned hardest. he's intensely and entirely devoted to the things that matter to him and for so long it was only him, bolin, and ensuring their survival — yet by the end, that devotion has expanded to protecting the rest of the world. he starts out entirely self-reliant and ends in trusting the people he cares about to know their own needs, to be able to take care of themselves, to be okay without him despite having spent so much of his life defined by his role in others' well-being.

just. what the fuck i'm such a big fan of this fictional guy and i'm unashamed about it at this point. also let him cry please (if you won't i'll do it i'll let him cry)
