I talked before about fish Pokemon and that was great, but it's not the only mon series I like. So fuck it, fish Digimon time. This will definitely be less analytical and more me gushing about Digimon I like because I may be a bit out of it right now. Also sorry if I missed any.
Starting at rookie/child level we only have one fish but why would we need more when we have Swimmon?
Loot at it, it's amazing! It's some some sort of tropical fish, obviously, but with some embellishments, like the beak full of teeth. I love how colorful and pointy it is. It works great as a rookie for so many aquatic lines. I think some great lines for it would be Swimmon -> Coelamon -> Piranimon -> MetalPiranhimon or Swimmon -> Tobiumon -> DIvemon -> Surfimon. Speaking of which...
I'm going over champion/adult Digimon together and starting with Coelamon.
It's a coelacanth! Coelacanths are amazing as some of the last lobe-finned fish. In this case, the lobes have been exaggerated into proper limbs, like how lobe-finned fish are the ancestors of tetrapods through intermediate limbed fish stages like tiktaalik. Its armor might also be based on placoderms, extinct fish with bony armor.
We have surprisingly few shark Digimon, but one we do have is Tobiumon, and it's amazing.
A shark with arms that can fly with its fins is such a Digimon concept that all it needs are some guns to be peak Digimon. It even has a remora missile launcher on its chest!
The armor Digimon give us several fish, and while I don't think any of them particularly work as armor evolutions, they're fine as Digimon on their own. And before anyone mentions it, Tylomon is a tylosaurus, not a fish. The first is Manbomon, and while it's a terrible armor evolution for Patamon, A mola mola wearing boxing gloves is such a goofy concept I can't help but love it.
Next is Seahomon, which is pretty obviously a seahorse, but its snout is a trumpet and it has a cape that turns into wings I guess? I dunno, it's a pretty weird one.
My favorite of the three is Mantaraymon. Despite the name, it doesn't have a manta ray's face, instead having a rostrum like a shovelnose ray or even maybe a dolphin. I do like how they used Patamon's ears as the cephalic fins.
Mantaraymon also has a more mechanical X-antibody variant that gives it kind of a stealth fighter vibe. I kind of like it more than the original Mantaraymon, which is saying something since I usually don't like X-antibody Digimon.
Moving onto the ultimate/perfect level we have a new mon from China, Huankunmon.
I love this design so much. Its based on the peng, a mythical creature that can turn from a bird to a fish. Fittingly, Huankunmon's line goes from a bird (Xiquemon) and goes to a bird/fish/dragon hybrid (Xiangpengmon). It'a also based on a flying fish since it can fly with a swimming motion. And it can turn invisible. There's nothing not to love about it.
Next is Piranimon, and look at this absolute beast
Some might call it overdesigned, but I absolutely love it. I particularly dig the tail being a fish hook covered in barbed wire. Its based on a red-bellied piranha, but the pop-culture version where they're bloodthirsty monsters that attack everything they see. Real piranhas are not like that. The helmet it wears may also be based on placoderms, some of which only had the bone armor on the front of their bodies.
Finally at this level, we have Divemon.
I'm not as big of a fan of this as I am of the other two, but I do like the Polynesian-style tattoos it has. Its a combination hammerhead shark and professional swimmer.
Maxing out at the mega/ultimate level we have MetalPiranimon.
While I appreciate any fish megas, I think this is a step down from Piranhimon. It's just a red-bellied piranha with a big metal head dragging around a counterweight. I'm not saying its bad, I'm just saying that Piranhimon is better. Fun fact, Metalpiranhimon came first. Piranhimon was designed because someone thought it was weird that there's a MetalPiranhimon but no regular Piranhimon. There are a few examples of that in Digimon, like SkullBaluchimon coming before Baluchimon.
Next is Regalecusmon, which might be stretching the definition of fish a bit, but it does have an oarfish for a head.
I really like this design, especially it using Zudomon's horn as a sword and what looks like Ebidramon's claw as a shield. I think it would make a great villain for an aquatic episode or storyline of a show. Maybe like a more modern version of MetalSeadramon from Adventure.
Finally, we have Surfimon.
It's a mechanical shark man riding a rocket-powered hammerhead shark surfboard with a buzzsaw on the front. We have reached peak Digimon, people. And even better, it was created by a fan as part of a contest. Frankly, it's a shame that it hasn't gotten any appearances in the anime or games. I don't get why some fan-made Digimon can go onto have major appearances like Dobermon, Cyberdramon, and SoundBirdmon while others get ignored. A lot of them don't even have art. I'd be pretty bummed if I was a kid who won a contest to have my design become official and then it was never used. I think Surfimon should get an anime appearance and the English dub should make it talk like a Californian surfer dude.

Here's light
Okay, Tailmon/Nefertimon is an easy one. Bastemon and Ancientsphinxmon. Mihiramon and Baihumon also have a lot of merit, but we're talking about evolutions for Nefertimon specifically and the Egyptian cat theme is rock solid.
I don't have a ringer for Patamon/Manbomon's perfect stage, but Pukumon is a fish with fists for punching so that's got to be the ultimate. I guess Hangyomon works for filler.
I did not ask for V-mon with the digimental of light to turn into a demon in bondage, but I have to work with the cards I was handed. Manticoremon was basically made with Gargoylemon in mind, and I like Dijiangmon as an evo for them since it's, once again, a demon in bondage.
Hawkmon/Harpymon is easy to work with since a bird man is a lot less Out There conceptually. Silphymon and Chronomon Holy Mode work almost too perfectly here. Harpymon actually makes it look natural that Silphymon has cat ears and a white humanoid torso.
Speaking of being Out There, Armadimon/Seahomon. Hey, you know what other digimon is silver with gold accents and doesn't fit anywhere else and evolves from Armadimon and is vaguely angelic? That's right, I used Shakkoumon and made it kind of work. I could have tacked on a random Angemon evo for the ultimate, but we're thinking about Seahomon and luckily, there happens to be a gold and silver sea serpent with a cannon for a snout and its name is MetalSeadramon. Seahomon's data says it has some nebulous association with the Seadramon family, so I'm pretty content with this.
Wormmon/Coatlmon evolves into Sandiramon because it's a white snake. I would have loved to use another snake or serpent for the ultimate level too, but Mervamon is close enough. It's a lot more femme than Wormmon, but it's the best option outside of a dragon. Its helmet even has little wings on it.

I don't draw very often because quite frankly I'm SHIT at it, but when I do, I have goofy silly fun with it
This is one of my more recent drawings I've done, where I drew the v-pet sprites of the Digimon I was raising at the time.
Funny story about this one. At the moment I was doing a "friendship hatch", where I asked my friends what Digimon they'd like to see me raise for them. While in the process of getting the correct Digimon, I done goofed and overslept, building up some unneeded care mistakes that led them all to evolve into the trashmon of their rosters. From right to left, top to bottom, the Digimon were supposed to be Kiwimon(? This was My own pick), Growmon, Starmon, and Tankmon. Maybe one day I'll draw a picture from the hypothetical universe where I didn't fuck up or something, or just run my Pen20ths again so I can draw more cute art like this, who knows.

ok so Iâve been talking about funny/ridiculous digimon designs a bit lately so I feel like Iâm obligated to talk about the most iconic weird digimon
while the design in and of itself is ridiculous, I feel like you need full context to understand what just how funny it is, so Iâm gonna kinda talk a bit before I actually show the digimon/design
so each digimental has multiple armor digimon you can get from it depending on the digimon you use it on. most armor digimon have a theme going for what the armor digimon of that digimental type look like.
for example, the light digimental mostly results in mythical creatures. thereâs nefertimon (of course), harpymon, coatlmon, and gargomon:

there are actually two digimon that use the light digimental that arenât mythical creatures. one is seahomon, which evolves when you use a digimental of light on ankylomon, armadimon, and tyumon. however, while itâs not a mythical creature, it still looks regal:
then comes patamonâs light armor evo. patamon usually digivolves into an angel without a digimental. And patamon, when using itâs typical hope digimental, turns into a pegasus.
you want know what patamon digivolves into with the light digimental?
a fish with boxing gloves
#i love manbomon and how ridiculous it is#iâm pretty sure most people already know about manbomon but i still just. really wanted to talk about it hfhghcyfgdg#dramon thoughts

Episode 34 arrives and itâs a MUCH NEEDED breath of first air. I mean, this episode could have actually BEEN a 99 Adventure episode. I guess at least one person on the production team has actually seen the old show at least once!
In my opinion, it doesnât quite equal the cuteness, silliness, and personality of similar 99 episodes, but it comes very close, and itâs certainly the best weâve had in a long long while.
And itâs all because of these two.
More below!
The episode bizarrely begins with Tailmon barking to communicate with Komondomon. Which raises the question, if no one could talk with Komondomon before because he can only bark, how were they communicating? Did Lopmon just tell Komondomon everything he needed to know and tell the kids âjust follow his leadâ or something??
Also Tailmonâs opening line being her barking is pretty surreal. And yet, fitting for a cat Digimon who is a dog at Child level.
The kids are shown taking a break - the first sign that this episode is gonna be A Bit Different.
Taichi: Something feels weird. Why arenât we fighting?
Sora: Taichi, donât you think you should rest once in a while?
Taichi: I mean, I do, I just got the impression the rest of the world didnât agree...
Sora: By the way, why do we like this world that constantly tries to kill us and never gives us any pleasant memories so much? Why donât we just take our partners to the human world and leave this place to its fate?
Taichi: How else am I gonna get an outlet for my pent up aggression and adrenaline junkie issues?
Sora: Thatâs your backstory?
Taichi: Iâm a complicated man.
Komondomon then randomly jumps... into the sea. âOh no, theyâll drown!â No, they wonât, because Komondomon has the ability to build a dome over his back trapping oxygen inside. Submarimon I get, but Komondomon?
As they dive, Tailmon explains what we learned last week about Millenniumon trying to resurrect himself with a new body. Apparently a very large fragment of him is located undersea in a place called Farga (transliteration TBA). She thinks resentfully about how she was almost absorbed into Millenniumonâs most recent resurrection effort.
Hikari tackles her with a comforting hug, which Tailmon seems a bit discomfited by. But does not object.
Tailmon considers defeating Millenniumon for good to be her personal mission as a Holy Digimon. Patamon sees her determination and does his best to put on his game face too. Itâs like being glared at by a sock puppet.
Tailmon: I canât allow Hikari to be put in danger. Itâs my job as the Holy Digimon -
Tailmon: - gosh darnit and sheâs just so cute too!
They wind up getting hit by a rip current or something?? and thrown into another weird submarine sort of thing. They discourteously break a hole in it and wind up inside a self-sustaining underwater kingdom, apparently, which instantly goes on Red Alert as Manbomon come to attack them.
This is Daipenmon, or Big Penguin Monster. I love him. He is glorious. Gaze upon his expression of perpetually stoned haze.
Daipenmon: You try steering this thing every day in and out nonstop without turning to hard drugs.
She attac!
While fighting, some Mantaraymon break in through the hole they made and the Manbomon go to drive them off as apparently they are not welcome. Then MarineAngemon appears in all her creepy glory and they sort everything out.
MarineAngemon: Oh, Tailmon, I see youâre a Holy Digimon! I can tell by your Holy Ring. I have one too.
Takeru: Patamon, why donât you have a Holy Ring?
Patamon: .... -.-â
Look! See! So cute! They are floating on bubbles! All the kids get their own and each has an individual design that shows their personality. Here Tailmon tries desperately to keep Hikari from falling off. I missed this kind of thing! Flashbacks to Monzaemonâs Toytown...
Turns out MarineAngemon is extremely small and the scene before was all âdonât pay attention to that man behind the curtainâ type scare tactics. Not very effective since no matter how big MarineAngemon gets, sheâs still extremely adorable. She invites them to stay the night. I really expected it to be a trap, but it wasnât.
OH MY GOD IS THAT FOOD ARE THEY EATING ACTUAL FOOD OMG OMG
quick someone alert the producers! Someoneâs having FUN with this show! I was starting to think that was illegal or something!
Itâs not AS fun as when they went to Devimonâs illusory castle in 99 Adventure and stuffed their faces after starving and living on potentially poisonous eggs for a week... but Iâll take it.
Meanwhile an undersea band plays music and Taichi ACTS LIKE THE FIFTH GRADE CHILD THAT HE IS. For about 0.5 seconds but HEY he did something child-like! holy cheez wiz batman!
Hikari is mysteriously absent so Tailmon goes to find her. Turns out sheâs asked MarineAngemon to heal Komondomon who is tired and wounded from their journey. Tailmonâs like, âAw, what a nice person she is.â Iâm all for exceptionally kind-hearted Hikari, but taking care of Komondomon should have been priority 1 for EVERYONE. At least Sora should have thought of it. I can see Taichi being too forward-focused, and Takeru a dumb eight year old, but Sora would definitely have thought about Komondomon.
Clearly the show wanted to establish how nice Hikari is, but I hate when shows inadvertently make all the other characters look like asses just to trump up the current star...
Taichiâs digivice glows and...
... MINI KOUSHIROU RETURNS!!! Hurray!
Um, whatâs that Soraâs drinking? A mimosa? o.O
Well anyway, Koushirou just shows up to remind everyone of the situation with the satellites and that things are getting worse.
Taichi: Do you have any idea what we can do about it?
Koushirou: No, but Iâll keep you posted.
Taichi: Thanks for nothing braindead
Koushirou: Thatâs it! Youâre not the man I knew in episode 3 anymore! I want a divorce!
Taichi: Fine with me itâs not like youâre ever home anyway!
Koushirou: Well at least Iâm not cheating with YAMATO!
Taichi: I HAVE NEEDS!
*cough*
Uh, I know Taichi is shorter than Sora, but he looks... pretty tiny here... lol. Or maybe Soraâs just had a growth spurt again.
They spend the night sleeping in bubbles. Aw.
By the way, question: the kids seem able to walk and breath normally in MarineAngemonâs kingdom... but the fish-type Digimon can also swim around normally. And it seems the kids wouldnât be able to survive in the ocean itself, but they and the fish can both survive here? And yet bubbles? What... what kind of scientific anomaly is this place??
So... MarineAngemonâs kingdom appears to be a Whamonâs corpse! XâD Wow thatâs dark.
They are attacked by Anomalocarimon! For reasons. Actually, they did explain earlier that the ocean Digimon have been more aggressive lately and it seems to be the influence of Millenniumonâs stone in Farga or whatever.
Daipenmon: This sucks I donât have health insurance
Tailmon frantically tries to fight off the intruders while also keeping Hikari out of danger. This entire episode is about Tailmon wanting to protect Hikari and keep her at armâs length so she doesnât end up in danger, while Hikari just keeps trying to stay close to Tailmon and support her.
Tailmon: I canât take you with me, Hikari. Itâs too dangerous.
Hikari: Fine. Big brother, will you bring me into the heat of the action with you?
Taichi: Sure thing.
Tailmon: ...
In his defense, Taichi does seem a bit freaked when Hikari TAKES A FLYING LEAP off MetalGreymon toward Tailmon.
(no I really love that Taichi immediately understands why Hikari wants to fight and takes her right to her partner without even a token ânuu but youâre still a baby.â I mean, if Yamatoâs cool with Takeru being in danger all the time, Taichi shouldnât be much worried about it...
Hikari has a flashback! Turns out sheâs heard Tailmon calling for her since she as a little kid!
She caught one of Angewomonâs feathers back then too.
Hikari promises Tailmon that sheâll be by her side. Awww.
Hands again.
Crest of Light! I kind of expect that weâll find out about the Crests and what they mean really fast at the end of the season... although Iâm still kind of hoping Mimi is mining Crest crystals atm.
Hikari is able to magically produce a Digivice... Iâd completely forgot she didnât have one till now.
Here I expected Tailmon would evolve, but instead, the power of Light appears to give everyone a power boost like itâs done in the past. They all glow with their Crest colors, kids and partners alike (except for some reason Tailmon glows yellow???) and launch a joint attack on Anomalocarimon and defeat him. Yay.
Then they say goodbye to MarineAngemon and go on their way, I guess to Farga.
So... yeah! it was a nice episode. It had a theme. There was fighting, but it didnât overwhelm everything else. There was character development. I really canât complain about it. And it was SHOCKING that Taichi had so few lines (compared to whatâs become the norm - a GOOD shock but still I was like âomg whatâs going on!!â)
I am just confused because why is this sort of episode happening when we havenât seen it in ages? What happened in that interim between when they all met up after the first team split up and just now that prevented the show writers from having fun with the show and just writing nonstop fighting all the time? Iâm so confused. It makes no sense. Still suspecting that they couldnât get anyone to come in and voice characters for long enough so they just focused on Sanpei Yuuko/Taichi, but without the others they couldnât figure out how to push the show forward and make it fun too... Idk. Itâs so weird. But oh well. We got a good episode, and maybe itâs a sign of changes to come. I hope so.
Next week...
We get attacked by a scary looking Digimon and Hikari... Idk, thinks she can block the attack somehow? haha. Aw but look how awesome she is protecting her brother and Greymon!
Hikari gets touched by the dark powers! Oh noes!
And more cuteness.
The episode title name-drops Angewomon, which surprises me because I figured theyâd hold off on her and give Tailmon Nefertimon for an evolution first. But *shrug* whatever! Looking forward to it.

Review: Digimon Adventure: (2020) Episode 34: Hikari and Tailmon
In this episode, Tailmon is free and gung-ho about completing her ancient crusade of stopping Millenniumon. Hikari just wants to cuddle her new kitty.
With Tailmon joining the team you would hope sheâd get some sort of proper introduction to establish herself. New additions often get featured to show how they change the group dynamic: Koichi, Nene, and Yujin got broken in quickly, while Ken, Juri, and Ikuto had more gradual but well-defined build ups. Pessimism regarding anything related to character is well warranted with this series, however, which might be why a straightforward character episode like this is so revitalizing. Thereâs a clear story in Tailmonâs actions, it creates a conflict with her partner, and she resolves it in a critical moment. Itâs so simple and so effective you canât help but wonder why they canât be bothered to do this more often.
They even go to the trouble of justifying and adding a history to the random underwater city the team visits. Itâs not even a pointless worldbuilding exercise, not that those canât be fun. Itâs directly tied to the ancient war, a group of refugees going underwater to escape the endless conflict above. The locals arenât receptive to their squatting, hence the vigilant Manbomon defenses and eventual arbitrary attacks. Itâs visually interesting, it connects to the current arc, and it allows a wide variety of Digimon to inhabit the place. Theyâre still pretty much all Deep Savers, but at least thereâs a lot of different kinds!
Still, itâs just a stopover on the road to FAGA, and the real value of the episode is what they do there. Priority one is establishing Tailmon, and the message is clear. Now that sheâs free, sheâs fulfilling her sacred duty and stopping at nothing to prevent Millenniumon from returning. Sheâs not letting a couple invading Mantaraymon get in her way, charging in on sight. But this introduces a snag: that same focus also means she doesnât view Hikari as a real partner but rather someone to keep safe during her quest. Hikari feels the same way about Tailmon, setting up one thing weâve been sorely lacking this series: conflict between partners.
When discussing conflict between partners, weâre arenât just talking about Masaru and Agumon getting into fistfights over eggs. It also applies to personality clashes, or differences in philosophy that prevent a team from clicking the way it needs to. Look at Tamers and how little disagreements within the three main partnerships fueled the development of all six characters. That dynamic seems to be the biggest thing fueling evolution this season, which makes overcoming such conflicts essential to everyoneâs growth. Although thereâs no lack of love between Hikari and Tailmon, they need to see eye to eye on what their relationship actually is. Itâs not going to work if Hikari wants to be close to her kitty at all times while Tailmon is the first to finally recognize the utter lunacy of kids riding their Digimon into battle.
Of course, to accept this divide, we need to accept this version of Hikari. It shouldnât be difficult to get behind someone so warm, caring about not just Tailmon, but everyone around her. She comes off as a normal loving eight year old, which is a far cry from what weâve seen of her up until the last part of the previous episode. She realizes her vacant nature was because she always sensed Tailmon calling for her over the years. That fine for an explanation, but fails to acknowledge that Weird Hikari is the only one weâve seen before. Normal Hikari is the oddball to us. The solution to that is having others notice the difference. This is where Taichi and Sora could have had some involvement, remarking on Hikariâs shift in personality to ease us through it as well. Even Hikari could have commented on the sensation of what must have been an oppressive feeling, even a a positive one, being released.
The resolution of Hikari and Tailmonâs differences makes the battle against Anomalocarimon worthwhile. Rather than focus on the spectacle of the battle itself, itâs all about Tailmon realizing sheâs not going to do this without help. Itâs not that she actually was fighting alone, but itâs clear she feels like sheâs leading the charge and Hikariâs job is to stay out of the way. Hikari embracing Tailmonâs crusade, and Tailmon accepting Hikariâs partnership, becomes the key to victory. Itâs more growth than we see in most evolution episodes in this series. It all looks smooth and effortless, worth celebrating, while also leaving you wondering where this has been all season.
My Grade: A-
Loose Data:
Weâve gushed over Komondomonâs barking this whole time, but Tailmon talking to him in his language and playing it completely straight goes to new heights.
When diving into the whirlpool, the visuals Sora, Taichi, and Takeru completely thrown for a ride is best taken with the implication that Hikari is completely unfazed by it.
MarineAngemonâs presence, while always adored, adds a nice bit of layering to Tailmonâs Holy Ring. Not sure if itâs building up to anything more than a basic power artifact, but if there is more going on, this, plus Takeru noticing Patamon doesnât have one, is doing it right.
Just having Daipenmon in an episode is a victory, but using his popsicles to propel the city around is an inspired touch.

Reactions to "Hikari and Tailmon"
- Wait, so SkullKnightmon actually WAS Gatomon? It wasn't quite clear before, but I think everyone assumed Kari found Gatomon in some dark dimension connected to Milleniumon.
- The underwater city is really neat. It reminds me of that anime Kaiba, as well as Ponyo. Probably the most whimsical setting I've seen in Digimon yet, but I'd have to think about it.
- And don't think I didn't notice all the Armor Digimon of Light cameos. Seahomon and Manbomon (MarineAngemon is just a bonus) are probably the main reason they set this episode underwater! Why does Kari's DigiArmor create so many water Digimon? It's a weird series quirk this episode definitely pays homage to!
- Kari does really cute things, but she still doesn't say much like the other characters...but they make her really cute. Moe, I guess. Somehow, they're making Kari a big deal without a lot of words. (Aww, she keeps trying to hold Gatomon!) The sudden quality of animation, the cuteness, the speech, It got me really pumped for Angewoman. And then...just a Neko Punch. : / ...they know what they did.
- And then to make matters worse, the next Digimon Encyclopedia entry is just Angewoman, right after not giving us the evolution this week. It looks like Gatomon's going to be grappling with her past next week, which is surprising since that sounds more complex than what this show has given us so far.
- But still. It seems like this show is having fun now, and I can respect that. It's almost the opposite of the original series. We're not here to see the kids deal with their personal drama, we're here to see them be as nostalgic and fanservicey as possible while dressed up in fashionable new outfits. We're not here to see a deep plot unfold in the Digital World, we're here to see some cool Digimon doing fun things in interesting new places. As long as I remember the original Adventure is still there to enjoy, I have to give props to this version for being enjoyable in a different way.
