New Overcast
On Tuesday, on the app’s 10th anniversary, Marco launched a major update to Overcast, the podcast app I’ve been using since its launch. Smart Speed has saved you an extra 931 hours beyond speed adjustments alone. There are a lot of changes big and small. I think one of the most obvious ones is that reordering episodes in a playlist seems to work without any more occasional rendering bugs (like…

“On February 19th, 2007, the first version of Tumblr was founded by David Karp and Marco Arment,” while I don’t know the time it was launched, I’m 70% sure it was launched under the Moon-Venus conjunction in Pisces. I drew up a chart with the suspected and debatable Ascendant… and I have commentary.
A combust Mercury, the planet of writing and technology, is in its Detriment and Fall of Pisces retrograding back into the Sun. Nightmarish. There’s no way Gemini was the Ascendant with Mercury in that condition.
But the lord of the 3rd House in the 11th kind of overrides that simply because it’s a more accurate signification of bringing correspondence and documentation to groups of people. I don’t know.
The Taurus Ascendant with an Exalted Venus in the 11th House fits since Tumblr went onto become this artsy, dreamy form of social media. Let us not even mention the Tumblr-esque pornography and erotica since Venus has its significations in sex as well. It’s eyeroll worthy.
Even people using Tumblr as a vision board and the 11th House presence of aspirations. If this is an accurate rectification, the Moon conjoining Venus is the saving grace.
Tumblr media
It’s always highly debated which House rules social media. Some astrologers say it’s the 3rd House. Others say it’s the 11th because of affiliations and like-minded people.
What house do you think rules social media?

Nifty: Cometeer ships concentrated frozen gourmet coffee in single-service pods for your home and business. Dilute it and drink it hot or cold.
I found out about this when Marco Arment brought it up on the Accidental Tech Podcast.
Arment is a coffee enthusiast—he even roasted his own beans at home for a while—but he’s been busy, and his house, including his kitchen, is under construction, so he used Cometeer and bought take-out coffee.
He says the Cometeer coffee is excellent, but it is too expensive and too much hassle to make it a regular habit. Yes, it’s convenient once it’s in your freezer, but it has to be kept frozen until it’s there.
Cometeer ships in allotments of 32 or 64 one-cup pods. Their least expensive rate comes to $2 per cup. I guess that’s not bad for take-out coffee, but it’s too much for the coffee you have at home.
Still, a neat idea.
Arment is a tech podcaster (obvs, his podcast is called the Accidental Tech Podcast), developer of the Overcast podcast app, and formerly in charge of technology for Tumblr.

Tumblr, founded by David Karp in 2007, has gone through several significant phases, reflecting broader shifts in social media, culture, and business. Here’s a breakdown of its history through major milestones and events:
2007-2009: The Early Years
- 2007: Launch of Tumblr in February by David Karp and Marco Arment as a unique platform that melded blogging with social networking.
- 2008-2009: Rapid growth due to its user-friendly interface and the unique "reblog" feature, which helped content circulate quickly among users.
2010-2013: Rise in Popularity
- 2010: Reached 1 billion total posts. The platform became popular with artists, musicians, and writers who enjoyed the freedom and simplicity of sharing multimedia content.
- 2011: President Barack Obama’s campaign joined Tumblr, showcasing its influence in politics and media.
- 2012: Continued growth led to 20 billion posts. Mobile interface improvements helped boost user engagement.
- 2013: Yahoo acquired Tumblr for approximately $1.1 billion, aiming to revitalize its own relevance among younger audiences.
2014-2017: Shifts and Challenges
- 2014: Introduction of the Tumblr Creatrs Network, an initiative to connect artists on the platform with brands for advertising purposes.
- 2015: Attempts to monetize the site intensified with new ad products and sponsored posts.
- 2016: The platform struggled with finding a profitable business model, while maintaining the creative freedom that attracted its user base.
- 2017: Verizon acquired Yahoo and, by extension, Tumblr. This change in ownership led to uncertainty about the platform’s direction.
2018: Content Policy Changes
- 2018: Tumblr announced a ban on adult content, leading to significant backlash from the community and a notable decline in user engagement. This policy change was influenced by issues with app store policies and an effort to clean up the platform.
2019-Present: A New Direction
- 2019: Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, acquired Tumblr from Verizon at a significantly lower price than what Yahoo had paid, marking a new chapter in Tumblr’s history.
- 2020-2021: Focus shifted towards re-establishing the platform as a haven for artists and niche communities without the scale of direct competition with Facebook or Twitter.
- 2022-2024: Efforts to reintroduce and enhance community-driven features, such as subscription services for creators, indicating a move towards supporting creator monetization more robustly.
Throughout its history, Tumblr has been characterized by its unique culture and commitment to providing a platform for free expression. Despite various ownership changes and policy shifts, it has managed to retain a dedicated user base that values its blend of blogging and social networking.

I was reading Tumblr's Wikipedia page:
"Development of Tumblr began in 2006 during a two-week gap between contracts at David Karp's software consulting company, Davidville. Karp had been interested in tumblelogs (short-form blogs, hence the name Tumblr) for some time and was waiting for one of the established blogging platforms to introduce their own tumblelogging platform. As none had done so after a year of waiting, Karp and developer Marco Arment began working on their own platform. Tumblr was launched in February 2007, and within two weeks had gained 75,000 users."
Automattic, an "established blogging platform" purchases it in 2019.
The origin section of microblogs refers to more details on tumblelogs.
I started this Tumblelog on 25 June 2017.

The new version of the Overcast podcast app seems to be working OK for me now after a bad start.
It initially failed to show me any of my custom playlists or my list of podcasts.
Here’s what I did: I reverted to the beta, then deleted it, restarted my iPhone, and downloaded the new version. It seems good now.
Marco Arment, who developed the app, advises force-quitting it and says that should fix it, but I’m pretty sure I tried that alone, and it didn’t work.

WEEK 3: How does Tumblr function as a digital community
In the ever-evolving landscape of digital communities, Tumblr stands out as a distinctive platform that has played a pivotal role in shaping online interactions since its inception in February 2007. The brainchild of high school graduate David Karp and developer Marco Arment, Tumblr introduced a new format, inspired by the tumblelog, fostering short-form, mixed-media posts (Davis 2013).
Tumblr media
Tumblr as a public sphere:
The concept of a public sphere, as defined by Kruse, Norris, and Flinchum (2018), involves individuals coming together, exchanging knowledge and information to foster political change. In a sense, social media in general, and specifically Tumblr aligns quite closely with this definition, serving as a space for access to information, equal participation, and protection from institutional influence. As a social media platform, Tumblr facilitates dialogue and engagement on a diverse range of topics, making it a dynamic digital public sphere.
Tumblr media
Tumblr as an artistic “blackhole”:
“...the platform’s affordances, namely its de-prioritizing of searchability in the site’s design, grant users a sense of freedom from the constraints of more traditional networked social media—like being in a black hole, you just keep going without knowing what you’re going to find.” - (Keller 2019)
Tumblr media
Users on Tumblr prefer conveying messages through images, taking on the role of content curators by sharing both original and reblogged content (Cho 2015). In this context, Tumblr can be interpreted as a platform that places a high value on aesthetics, a characteristic accentuated by its support for user-customized short-form blogs. This aligns with its initial identity as a creative community (Keller 2019).
Tumblr as a safe place for minorities and marginalized individuals:
With its roots in traditional weblogs and social networking sites, Tumblr has become a breeding ground for diverse and empowering feminist communities (Reif, Miller & Taddicken 2022). Before the 2018 ban on NSFW content, Tumblr was a central hub for subcultures centered around body positivity, gender nonconformity, queerness, and art (Pilipets & Paasonen 2020). Its lenient content policy allowed for the expression of diverse identities, fostering inclusivity and empowerment. Tumblr serves as a space where girls and women explore emerging feminist identities, create solidarity, and challenge normative beauty standards (Keller 2019).
Tumblr media
The prevailing trend in social media involves platforms like Instagram and YouTube being dominated by influential figures with sizable audiences. Additionally, the entry barriers in the digital landscape hinder third-wave cultural intermediaries from participating in crucial realms such as public issues, current affairs, civic media, and societal discussions (Hutchinson 2019). In contrast, Tumblr, functioning as a personal blog platform, provides a space where individual voices can be expressed and heard.
