Hi! I’m researching dog breeds for my future service dog and I haven’t seen anyone working with maremma or maremma cross breeds even though they seem amazing. I’m a wheelchair user and I’m mostly looking for a dog to help with mobility and a little bit of crowd control, because honestly for medical and mental health reasons I’m sick of people touching me and my wheelchair. My only issue is that many dogs seem to be nervous around my wheelchair, would you mind sharing any experience you have with mobility aids, or how you do in a team with busier spaces?

Do you find that training and tasking is enough stimulation with regular exercise to keep them happy, so many people seem to warn they aren’t good companions.

TL;DR - i wouldn't recommend maremmas for A/SD work, but with careful screening and training you definitely could make it work!

pros:

generally pretty healthy, as they weren't really selectively bred

great with kids, very loving of their humans

big size is great for mobility work & crowd control

expanded on below:

on the whole i wouldn't recommend maremmas for A/SD work. they're livestock guardians, bred to aggressively protect their livestock, which means they often have aggression issues. mischa happens to be an exception but he's definitely the odd one out.

traditionally, maremmas live by themselves with their livestock and don't have a whole lot of human interaction. this means they have a high prey drive as they were expected to catch their own food. they're wary of strangers [i consider this a plus though, for AD work, you don't have to train to ignore people like you would a lab], sometimes to the point of straight up scared and unwilling to interact with them. they're often stubborn, not a dog who lives to please. they need a lot of socialisation as pups.

you will also need to have some (fenced & secure) land for them to run around on - a typical suburban backyard may be enough if you supplement with physical and mental exercise, but really they need acreage / farmland. mischa loves to sit outside watching our animals for literal hours. but he does need other stimulation of course! ideally, training / tasking, play and an ~hour walk every day.

that said... there are always going to be exceptions. they're very big dogs (Mischa is 38kg / ~80lbs & 77cm / 30in tall), which is great for mobility (though learning tucking / to keep out of the way is an absolute must). they're great with kids, and if brought up with people they're very loving of their humans. they weren't selectively bred like most other breeds, so they tend to be pretty healthy.

like any breed, maremmas can be ADs, if you screen them and raise them properly, and they can be good companions if you know what they need. i'd suggest getting a cross breed, probably with an easier going breed like a lab.

as for your other questions, i don't use mobility aids but i would assume it's a desensitising issue - get them used to it as soon as possible and they'll be fine.

Number 189, the Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdog. Maremmano is a very old Italian shepherd breed. The breed is descended from herding dogs from Abruzzo, where the dogs are still used in sheep herding, and from herding dogs formerly found in the Maremma area, part of Tuscany and Latium.

about mischa

mischa is a maremma sheepdog x white swiss shepherd. he was born on the 5th of February 2021. he and i are working towards being an assistance / service dog team!

we live in australia and in a state that doesnt have assistance animal specific legislation, so our rights as an AD team are covered by federal law under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) (the DDA).

mischa is training to be a psychiatric and mobility assistance dog. we have only just started to work on AD tasks and Public Access, and we aren't with an organisation, we work with a private dog trainer who has experience with (psych) assistance dogs.

he's a cat dad and you're never going to convince otherwise. because of his job it's quite difficult for him to keep a pet in the house, he feels too bad leaving it all alone for days at the time (do not worry, the ball of fluff would have an automatic feeder and a self cleaning litter). so he gets his fix at a cat café. it's perfect, really: he can pet all the cats, and you can eat and drink to your heart's content while seeing him all happy and giddy.

he's a wanted simple man, he's perfectly content setting the table while you stir fry the meat he had left in the fridge to marinate for the whole day. he'd fry up some popcorn after dinner and drizzle them in butter and salt. he loves it when you rest your head on his shoulder, especially if the movie turns out to be boring. he lets you fall asleep and does his best not to wake you at the end of the film. when nanako and mimiko make fun of him the day after for carrying you to the bed bridal style, he can only smile and ruffle their hair.

he has a sweet tooth, sorry i don't make the rules. he doesn't like sickeningly sweet pastries, but a french press coffee and a slice of opéra cake are perfectly within his taste. he watches you eat an english scone with strawberry-rhubarb jam and clotted cream and sip on your darjeeling tea as he listen to you talk about whatever is on your mind. he notices some crumbs on your lower lip and tries to discretely let you know, but you're too absorbed in your own world to notice. so he gently wipes them away for you and notices a slight blush dusting your cheeks.

ZEN'IN NAOYA

it's really not a date, it's more of an interview. he doesn't date just to date, he dates to marry. he needs to be the perfect heir for the zen'in clan, he needs a wife and a child. so he takes you to an incredibly expensive restaurant and grills you with questions. at the start it's not the most pleasant experience, but as the date goes on (if you answer his questions correctly) he loosens up and lets you speak freely. he doesn't even realize it, but he feels like he has a lot to prove, so once he decides that it's worth it he orderes his favorite wine (coincidentally the most expensive one) and shoos the waiter away to pour you a glass himself.

please he loves the pinball machines, literally spends hours on them. you take turns at the claw machines to try and win each other a plushie (that riceball looks just like him? how?) and lose almost three thousand yen. he watches you play a shooter game and gets playfully annoyed when you don't listen to his tips. almost spills his coke all over one of the machines when you finally win your first game of the night. he offers you karaage to celebrate and you almost choke on the sauce when he imitates the panicked face you had during the game.

OKKOTSU YUUTA

can he pet that dog? can he please pet that dog?? you bring the food and a table cloth, and he brings plates, cutlery, drinks and two different brands of dog treats. you could swear he spends more time looking at the dogs run around and telling you all about the specific breed than actually eating. a big fluffy maremmano runs towards him and almost knocks the picnic table over, but yuuta is ready: he grabs a duck skin treat from his pocket and hurls it to the other side of the park, but not before having pet the dog's head and having called him a good boy.

KAMO NORITOSHI

he enjoys the quiet of the tea house's garden because he's not a kamo there, just noritoshi. he used to be partial to sencha tea but you insisted on ordering something different every time, and he's glad you did because he's a creature of habit, without you he wouldn't have discovered he actually prefers hojicha tea over anything else. he lets you order whatever you want, from dango to daifuku, even dorayaki once, but warabimochi remains his favorite.

Bread man made me wonder: Do you have any Saint Bernard characters? His coloration almost made me think of one, but I'm guessing he's not. They're my fave, so I'm personally curious!

The bread man is supposed to be vaguely st. bernardesque! His face was darker initially, but it didn't really jibe with the color palette and composition so I kept lightening it :'> In the end he turned out looking almost like a maremmano-abruzzese sheepdog or great pyrenees.

Saint Bernards were originally bred by monks in the Great St Bernard Hospice, situated in the Alps right at the border between Switzerland and Italy. So they would fit into the Vaschete/monastery setting pretty well I think.
