actually. i am writing a letter to keegan and feel much better. have to remember to pull my own head out of my ass and not be so selfish and cynical. have to remember that it’s wonderful to have something that makes life so challenging.. to let the whole world wash over me, and, being touched by it, b a part of it. “be still and know that i am god” etc etc etc.

🎶 Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy 🎶
Felt like making something lighthearted and happy, needed some cheering up. x) think I might have overdone it, though lol. But! I’ve yet to meet a person who didn’t need at least a little cheering up! Hope everyone has a wonderful day ☕️🔸

when you're a kid, grownups and other kids will teach you various vocal games: songs, poems, nursery rhymes, tongue twisters, and the like.
Many of them are in words. Some of them are meaningless syllables strung together in a particular order.
They do not tell you which is which, probably because it should be obvious.
It is not always obvious.
Sometimes the meaningless syllables are actually in another language. And sometimes... it maybe should have been clear since childhood that I have an audio processing disorder.
Here is a vocal game I thought was meaningless:
Mairsy dotes and dozey dotes and lidle amsey divey. Akiddelie divey do. Wouldn't you?
It was a very fun little vocal game, but I was confused about the two real words at the end. (the ands were not confusing. you can throw some ands in a stream of nonsense, it's fine) So one day, I asked my mom about it.
Turns out, the whole thing was supposed to be real words.
Mares eat oats, and does eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy. A kid'll eat ivy too. Wouldn't you?

I was rereading your Marvel fic, When Push Comes to Chevre, and I was laughing at the little ditty that Steve recites--"Mairzy doats and doazy doats, and little lamzy divey!" And I was wondering if you knew the full, not-strung-together song? My Nana said it ended with "a kittle eedivey too, wouldn't you?" Apparently it's a joke song, meant to confuse people into agreeing instinctively. "Mares eat oats and does eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy. A kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you?" My Nana is only slightly younger than what Steve would be, so it was both startling and charming to run across it in a fic. Where did you run across it originally, if you remember?
(For the curious, When Push Comes To Chevre is here.)
Oh yes! I've known it my whole life -- my mum sang it to me when I was a child. I did have to google it to make sure I was getting it right because nursery songs like that can sometimes mutate, and I wanted to make sure it really was as old as Mum always told me it was, but to me it's always been the equivalent of a nursery rhyme. I was actually quite startled to find it was a popular song when it was released. I've only ever known the lines you quote, but there's a whole ass song attached to them :D

I NEVER knew that that was 'Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy' till this exact moment.
"A kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you?" I know, right? 😂 It sounds like complete nonsense syllables like "la di dah" or something because of the way the rhythm of the song is structured, but they're all real phrases the entire time! Haha! I love it! 😆

unearthed memory time (no tw it’s just genuinely not that interesting so it’s under the cut)
my dad wrote this poem down on the whiteboard once when i was maybe 9-10.
Tumblr media
it’s supposed to say, when read aloud, “mares eat oats, and does eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy. a kid’ll eat ivy too, wouldn’t you?”
all i remember from that conversation, and whenever it came up until it was erased, was my dad stopping me every time i tried to say it , and correcting me. i just wanted to say the funny words, it was stimmy.
he wouldn’t tell me what it was supposed to read. after a while of me getting frustrated and him trying to “help” me problem solve it, he told me, and i didn’t think it was as cool and fun as he did, mostly bc i had just spent a matter of time constantly being corrected and having it repeated to me with the expectation that it would register differently after a while.
i think that’s kind of an illustrative moment of my relationship with my dad. sometimes i’ll be in a denial spiral and thinking like “it really couldn’t have been that bad,” and then a memory like this pretty innocuous one will return and all i’ll think about is how he could have so easily done it differently. this wasn’t just a one off, he fully swore off trying to teach me to sing because one time when i was very little i didn’t understand how to match pitch with the keyboard and would just get louder. he kept demonstrating it in the same exact way every time and telling me i was doing it wrong every. time. until i got frustrated and had a meltdown. and then anytime i asked him to help me learn something from then on he would just say “well you remember how it went when i tried to teach you to sing!”
