It's just soft and small, nothing big, barely noticeable but it's the kind of smile that takes you off guard. That resonates in your chest. All Maria is doing is watching him with Eli at his feet but it warms something in her chest, like it always does, when she sees someone so clearly loving something unconditionally. It's just a completely ordinary moment but those are always the ones that really make Maria smile. Those little moments of softness in the world.

2. This one could almost be followed by the whispered words of I'll kill you. Instead it's a sarcastic laugh and tilting of the head that Declan is given in response as he fights his way to the counter. The word 'busy' having left his lips the moment he caught Maria's eye. The shop is heaving, tourists, kids, and a coachload of old people who were visiting the museum. Maria is run ragged behind the counter with hair falling out of her pony tail and four cups in her hands.

3. Maria doesn't actually realise she's smiling until her dad asks her what she's thinking about at dinner. He's got a smile on his own face, like he clearly thinks she's thinking about someone she likes. It dawns on Maria then that, oh no, she like likes Declan, because yes of course she appreciated how attractive he is and of course she understands why Alice always blushes around him. He's handsome and gentlemanly and friendly.

4. Maria has no idea when Declan figured out that cheesy, terrible jokes really, really make her laugh but he did and he seems to be coming into the shop with more and more of them. Almost like he might have bought a book and is just slowly ticking them off.

After that Maria has gone hunting for a book of her own and now when things are a bit tough it's like a weird secret language between the two. Maria cracks a terrible joke to Declan or he cracks a terrible joke to her and the mood is instantly lifted.

5. Sometimes a bad day just needs a smile to make it better. Maria has been shouted at and harassed in the shop. It's just one of those days when all the worst people and customers seem to be out and about. There's nothing she can do about it but she's worn out, run down and the smile isn't touching her eyes. There's other things too, little stresses that have all just piled on top of one another throughout the week. She hasn't been able to talk to her family and she's been shouldering the load of Alice and Tony's emotional problems like a lone parent.

And that's all it takes, well that and the smile, the way he leans against the counter and looks all twinkly. The smile on her face is real then, gentle but touching her eyes and god she could just cry.

You had been fooling around for a little while now and you were both on the same page as far as feelings go, but he wanted to take it slow considering everything that had been going on. Nick had been honest about everything that was going on with Maria and you had told him if he needed you to step aside you would so he could have his family back and at that point Nick opened up whole heartily and wanted nothing more than a future with you.  He had called you after he dropped off Zara with Maria and filled you in briefly about how Maria had just asked him to move to LA and he told you that he wouldn’t go, he never wanted to leave you. He then started yelling at someone and the phone went dead.

You panicked and called back a few times, then finally another voice answered telling you they were a police officer and Nick had been arrested.  You called Declan as he was acting CO and you actually got along with him, and then you called Liv. Liv and Declan knew about your guy’s relationship, both catching you on different nights out on a date. As you were walking out the door Declan called back and told you to stay home and to stay away because he didn’t want 1PP after you as well and you were put on desk duty because you would be too emotional.

Going completely against him you walked out the door heading to the prescient that Nick was being held at. As you walked up to the door Amanda and Liv walked out and as soon as your eyes locked with Liv’s you burst into tears, them both rushing up to you wrapping you in their arms holding you while you cried. You sat in Amanda’s apartment almost on your second bottle of wine when your phone started to ring,

“Hello”

“Baby” Nick sighed over the phone.

“Babe are you ok?” your voice cracked as you held back tears.

“I’ am so sorry. Do you still love me?”

“Nick, you don’t even need to ask me that”

“I want to see you, but I don’t want you coming in here Y/N. I’ll call when I can ok”

The next morning you sat behind Nick as he was being arraigned and tears ran down your cheeks when they announced how much his bail was. You didn’t have that kind of money. As you walked back to work, Liv letting you have a minute to let everything sink in, your phone started to ring and you smiled to yourself when you saw the number come up on your screen,

“Uncle John I’ve missed you”

John chuckled over the phone, “Hear your man is in a little bit of trouble Y/N”

Declan had let you have the day off and John had asked you to wait for them at the car. John was posting Nick’s bail and you were his token surprise when he would be walking out the gates. Tears filled your eyes as you seen Nick and John walk towards the exit gates. John nodded towards you and Nick looked over at you his eyes instantly tear filled.

Nick walked out through the gates and you ran towards him, Nick rushing towards you. You jumped on him, Nick picking you up and you wrapped your legs around him, your arms around his neck. Nick’s lips met yours and he deepened the kiss. You both swallowing each other’s cries,

“Ah young love there’s nothing like it”

You and Nick pulled away from each other and Nick stood you back on the ground, his arm wrapping around your shoulders, your head resting on his chest, you both looking at a smirking Munch,

“There really isn’t” Nick kissed the top of your head.

You pulled away from Nick and wrapped your arms around John,

“Thank you so much for everything” You said into John’s ear.

As you pulled back John moved a hand to your shoulder,

“Keep him in line so I can get my money back” John winked at you before giving Nick a hug “Take care of her” John nodded towards you “She is good for you”

Nick walked over to you wrapping you in his arms again as you both watched John walk back to his car and drive away,

“Let’s get you home babe” you looked up at Nick kissing his cheek.

“Can I stay with you till all this is all sorted? I don’t want you to leave me”

“Lucky I packed your bag then” you giggled  

A cheeky smile pulled to Nick’s face as he walked you towards the car,

“Take me home baby, I have some knots I need you to rub out.”

My #RepealThe8th: Part X

Both Sides

As I’ve already written, the pro-choice people were subject to harassment and intimidation (I personally know of people who were physically assaulted for nothing more than standing at a table handing out leaflets) on a daily basis. Attempts to explain our experiences were sometimes met by pro-life people with their own stories, some of which must have been made up, and which never seemed to amount to anything more than a pro-choice person expounding a passionate opinion. They would inevitably begin and end the response with “both sides are as bad as each other”, as though that were remotely true.

I had thought that “both sides” was simply a matter of political apathy, but during the #RepealThe8th campaign, it turned out to be something darker: weaponised silencing. After all, if you’re a right-wing conservative, “both sides” can appear like a nuanced, considered opinion and you can easily position it such that any analysis of criticism of that opinion (which will necessarily come from left-wing liberals) can be dismissed as liberal bias.

"Both sides" is an argument used when you know you're taking justified flak and you don't feel capable of addressing those issues.

"Both sides" is an argument used to position your emotion-based opinions on the same field as someone else's fact-based lived experience.

"Both sides" is an argument used to pretend that a few extremists on one side represent their mainstream, while ignoring the fact that your entire campaign is based around extremism.

“Both sides” is an argument which advertises that you’ve put zero effort into understanding any of the issues, and yet have somehow found a way to be proud of this intellectual laziness.

“Both sides” is an argument used to dissuade people who are already weary of political chicanery from getting involved in issues they care about - even if it’s just voting in a referendum. This will necessarily favour the status quo.

Case Study 1: Vandalism of Heritage Landmarks

When some pro-life people defaced a national landmark by putting a huge NO sign on Ben Bulben, pro-life people on social media leaped to their defence by making comparisons to when Tipperary For Choice published a photo of a large Repeal sign on the Rock of Cashel. 

The difference is that the pro-choice people merely held up a banner in front of the Rock of Cashel, took a photo and went home. The pro-life people did actual damage to Ben Bulben, refused to take responsibility, and the sign had to be removed by others. 

But, sure, “both sides”, yeah?

Case Study 2: Experts

Whenever experts were consulted by pro-choice people, pro-life people would inevitably counter that “both sides” had experts.

However, the pro-life people struggled to find qualified spokespeople, and when they did, they were frequently exposed as liars or had criminal records or were misrepresenting their credentials. The Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment could not find a single medical expert in Ireland to argue the case for the status quo.

The pro-choice people had a coalition of experts from every relevant field, including the vast majority of general practitioners, midwives, lawyers and gynaecologists. None of those disciplines was remotely split down the middle, and working, qualified professionals made appearances across social media, in the discussions programmes and attended meetings all over the country.

But, sure, “both sides”, yeah?

Case Study 3: Avatars Of The Movements

As the debate heated up, heroes of the people emerged on “both sides”. While there were scraps between infantry on the ground, the gulf in class between the leaderships of the two sides was apparent right from the start.

The pro-choice people had, among others:

Ailbhe Smyth, spokeswoman and convenor for the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment.

Nurse Polly, practicing gynaecological nurse and Twitter detective.

Orla O’Connor, director of the National Women’s Council.

Louise Kenny, Professor of Obstetrics in UCC. 

Simon Harris, Minister for Health.

The pro-life people had, among others:

John McGuirk, communications director for the Save the 8th campaign.

Cora Sherlock, deputy chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign.

John Waters, journalist.

David Quinn, journalist and founder of the Iona Institute. 

Maria Steen, retired barrister with the Iona Institute.

Declan Ganley, businessman and founder of Libertas. 

Rónán Mullen, senator and founder of Human Dignity Alliance.

The pro-choice leadership developed a campaign of tolerance and inclusion based on compassion and promoting the real-life stories of the many, many women whose lives had been negatively affected, and sometimes destroyed, by the Eighth Amendment. At no point did they insult or demean anyone who had strongly held pro-life views.

The pro-life leadership developed a campaign of harassment, sarcastic abuse, histrionics, vandalism and lies. And as if you didn’t already know, the reason they engage in these lies are because lying is an alarmingly effective political strategy.

During an episode of Claire Byrne Live, literally every single attempt by representatives of TFMR to share their experiences was shouted down.

On the Pat Kenny Show and elsewhere, Rónán Mullen repeatedly indicated that mental health issues don’t count as real health issues.

John McGuirk called students “buffoons” and averred that “the vast majority of young people are dumb”. 

Cora Sherlock regularly repeated lies like “90% of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome aborted, one in four pregnancies ending in abortion”.

John Waters compared abortion access to the holocaust and shouted abuse at an interviewer who questioned his opinions in a fairly neutral way.

Declan Ganley averred that the pro-choice movement was about making money for “the abortion industry” and claimed he wouldn’t pay tax if abortion were legalised.

Generally, they never stopped complaining about being “marginalised” and “silenced” while the media reported on everything they said and did.

and on and on and on.

How they expected to win I have no idea. Thankfully the Irish people were smart enough to see right through it.

But, sure, “both sides”, yeah? 

Conclusion

"Both sides" is not just demonstrably incorrect; it actively damages the public discourse. Smart people mistake it for nuance and stupid people mistake it for thinking.

PRO TIP: If only one side keeps saying "both sides", then maybe not both sides, yeah?

The Family You Make

Ship: Syndianite (Tom x S1 Dianite)

Summary: Dianite always kept a close eye on his followers. Some he felt little connection to, in an ironic twist where they focused too much on seeking power or always asked for favors with no returning sacrifices. Others he held a nearly unbreakable bond with. With these followers, they seemed to group together. Perhaps part of their connection to him, or a kindred ship from their unique outtakes on being a Dianitee, brought them together. When he looks at those Tom had gathered around him, he knew they would raise hell for him. And he would do the same

AN: I was (trying) working on my tshirt design for a school thingie, and I was passively rewatchin season 1 in Tom’s POV, and the comradery between Tom and Nade and the Modesteps (and, amusingly, Champwan) reminds me so much of a band of brothers. Its adorable.

 Dianite was supposed to be working on paperwork (Goddammit Jared, he thought with a touch of fondness for the problematic child). On one hand, he could just bullshit it all and charm people to believe it was perfect. On the other, he could just remove the problem altogether. (It was the same damned Mianitee causing trouble for Jared, trying to force him to leave the city. Though it might upset his brother, he would probably just take the dipshit out. She wasn’t that important)

Though he was mostly confined to the Nether (the recent disagreement with Mia left Ianite with little choice but to keep them in separate worlds until it smoothed over) it would be no trouble to remove one Maria Stevoi from Stricker’s Reach. (He made a note to have Addison check up on Jared, he hadn’t been doing well since his parents left him). However, his biggest concern was his dear champion, once more finding himself in trouble.

Like the angry little child he liked to be, he had waged a war against the local Mianitees. He had been doing rather well, at one-point fighting on behalf of his brothers, until his opposition found his house. Not only had they taken Skeletor from the zombie (though he had since returned the horse to his temple), they had removed many of his instruments for war. Needless to say, his champion had not been faring terribly well last he had seen.

He wasn’t too keen on entering the Overworld, Ianite wasn’t one for losing the peace she installed, so he made his way to his mirror room. Now, those who had seen the room (as is Furia) would believe it was his room of obsessing over the lives of his followers. (It is not Furia, fuck you. These lava pools are special enchanted to keep track of set personnel for security reasons). Each pool was honed in on the location of particular followers of his, though he had a few exceptions with potential enemies. Through these, he often entertained himself keeping up with his savage following.

After sparing a glance at Jared’s mirror (He was laying down a trap that was fundamentally flawed. He gave it a quick fix), he settled in his cushion (It is not a cushion for mother, I swear I will smite your ass Furia) facing Tom’s pool. (It had been an interesting challenge to keep them vertical, though the glass he added a nice visual effect). The sight that greeted him was not unusual.

The zombie was holed up in Nade’s house, plotting his next move. (He found it rather amusing how he preferred being referenced to as Nade, though he was aware of the past that haunted the name Matt). The two were adamantly making new war preparations, Tom dragging the unconfident OpTic along. Despite his recent string in failures against their foes (Had Tom not gotten revenge for him, the Mianitees would have faced much dire consequences. The Captain would have received a different, more subtle consequence, to avoid upsetting his sister) he was still determined to help in any way.

It was well into the night, the two starting to feel the hours, when two more mortals appeared. Tony and Josh Modestep came bearing a bag of food. (Many are confused when they first meet the older brother, unable to discern whether he was in fact a penguin for not. This came as a great source of foolery for them, as they could keep the charade up for months before the bewildered people would figure it out, or politely be corrected. The costume wasn’t particularly convincing, most people were just unaware what a real penguin looked like). They had been AWOL for a long time, but were never far. Once they heard the of the events passed they were quick to set up many plans for pranks. (An Ianitee was not going to be thrilled in the coming future).

Though they brought no items for battle, along with the food Josh was hefting a large bag over his soldier. He gently placed it on the ground, and let the contents fall out. The relaxed figure of Champwan sat on the ground, completely unconcerned with being surrounded by Dianitees. (Despite his allegiance with the priest, who was most definitely allied with Mianite, Champwan had basically adopted by the Dianite crew. The Nether god himself had found himself with a growing attachment for the priest’s assistant). After helping Tom, and the Modesteps (though few knew of this happening), he was graciously accepted as a pseudo brother.

(As Dianite took more interest in his unofficial follower, Furia even gained respect for the small man. He proved to be fierce in battle, far more skilled then any of the inhabitants of the land, and the closest in skill to the fiery demon. Though he would never admit it, he was impressed by the small human. At some point, the Nether god considered offering Riley the position of his priest. Declan would have to live with losing his understudy.)

The group chose to enjoy each other’s company, bitching about the Mianitees, getting drunk (though Champ seemed to hold his liquor well, completely unaffected), and confessing their deepest secrets. (“Nade, my main man, I must say, I just, love, love your fine ass, fine ass base.” The tipsy zombie draped himself across his lap, “And that bootay.” He snickered. “Dia’s is better though.” This brought a chorus of laughs, and a small smirk from Riley. “Well,” Josh continued the thought, “We should get a real professional,” he exchanged a smirk with Tony, “One of them real fancy ones,” he broke out into giggles, “And have them make us a banner with his ass on it.” He lost all pretense of composure, “We could go into battle, and destroy everyone. They’d be too in awe of his divine booty to fight!” Champ made a mental note to tell Dec about that one.)

They stayed up well into the morning, before Tom passed out drunk, wrapped around Riley, an unfortunate victim to his octopus cuddling method. (He didn’t mind though. At the same time he knew he could easily kill Tom, he also knew the zombie wouldn’t willingly hurt him). Nade came across two extra beds (specifically meant for the Modesteps) and set them at the end of the two there already. With some help, they managed to get Tom and Riley onto the bed (the zombie would not let go, and Riley didn’t have the heart to push him off). The group piled on top of each other and were content to sleep off the rest of the day.

Dianite spent this time watching them, as well as his other children, followers, dammit Furia. He made certain the accommodations for his past knight were up to the highest standard. (In reality, she had been his champion, but he couldn’t call her that, not when he was still working so hard on bringing Tom back. She understood. Felicia had chosen the title herself, despite the previous placeholders going for something more entitled (one had tried for Lord, but was amusedly shot down. He stuck with baron). Felicia had been the High Knight for many years, starting at the ripe age of 23, ending her reign at age 61. Twenty years later, she can still kick your ass. The god knew she didn’t care, but he wanted to let her live the rest of her life in luxury. Overall, she was grateful he still cared. (Even Furia made the occasional visit, if only to spread some gossip to her. Then to gripe about how this generation is worse than hers).

The rest of the time, beyond eavesdropping on his beloved and his family, he fucked around with the fools who chose to inconvenience his other followers. Beyond the situation with a drunkard attempting to make a move on little Daniel, (He was barely 9, yet he had seen more shit than many men see in their lifetime. Born and raised as a sex slave, he lost his tolerance once his mom was beaten to death. Dianite never asked for anything in return from the child), there was little trouble they couldn’t handle. (Said drunkard was a pile of ashes, and his child, yes Furia, I will admit to that one being my child, was happily walking away with a fresh batch of cookies.

Still, the immortal was bored. His agents of chaos were rather tame today, though he knew Tom and Nade were ready to roll in destruction, and even Furia being domestic. (He was working on his garden, filled with both exotic and mundane vegetation. Though it was difficult to cultivate some of the weaker plants without water, the fire entity managed it). In a fashion better suited for his people, he followed the whim of one of his lesser ideas.

Red and Gold dye in hand, Dianite sent himself to the base of Nade. The slumbering people, minus Riley, who slept light due to his disaster of a past, were innocently unaware of the event about to take place. He surveyed the items the god held, and whispered to him, “You should draw a dick on Tony’s butt. It’ll either take days to find it, or he won’t be the first to see it.” Champ wiggled his eyebrows and shifted the sleeping Tom to a better position for assault. With a smirk, the god set to work.

 (In their confused hungover agony, Champwan took great pleasure in the expressions that littered their faces as they noticed the marks left on them. He claimed innocence, and they knew better than to fight him on it. Nade sported lovely racooned eyes, one red, one gold, with a reddened neck to complete the look. Tony sported the words ‘BOTTOM BITCH’ across his forehead, to which he swore up and down he would always be top. Josh’s face was littered with flowers, sparkles, and hearts. He wasn’t terribly bothered by it, but rather the constant teasing his brother kept going. Tom sported a dusting of gold freckles (an inside joke of sorts), and many dicks spread out on his cheeks. He would later find the finely scrawled ‘Mine’ at the very bottom of his back. Despite many attempts to scrub the letters off, they refused to be removed for nearly two weeks.”

(AN: Sorry for the suuuuuuper late upload. I was working on my t-shirt thing. Mostly thumbnails right now, gonna start the rough draft after work tomorrow. Then I can pretend it looks good, and figure out if I want to marker it, or color pencil it 😊. I think this is my longest fic so far. I’m simultaneously proud, and pretty sure I went on the most tangents in this one. Oh well. )

Maria & Declan | Amnesia

Continued from here X Declan was certainly his name, his eyes glancing up at the woman as she came wandering into his room with a familiarity that had to mean something. For the life of him, though, he had no idea who she was. Or who Eli was for that mattered. He tried to plaster on polite smile, though it far from hit its mark. There was a shakiness there that relayed the concern that he was feeling. The nurses had said someone would be here to take him home. Someone he was supposed to know. He ran a hand down his face before rubbing at the scruff along his jaw line. A telltale give away that he didn't realize she knew. "Yeah, uh, okay." He nodded. If the hospital was releasing him to her, that had mean something. Right? God, he hoped so. He carefully pushed out of the bed, a little wobbly, but stayed on his feet. How was he supposed to ask who the hell she was? It would have made it incredibly awkward.

"Hey, it's okay, I got you." Maria said holding out an arm to take as he wobbled. "You can sit back down if you need to, none of this not taking care of yourself." Maria added.

She watched his expression but couldn't quite work out what was happening, she knew he might be in pain but that wasn't it, his usual smile was missing, the way his eyes lit up whenever Eli was mentioned.

"Hey, are you okay? The doctors said their might be some memory loss, you know who I am right?" Maria asked looking around the room. The doctors said some memory loss but if it was more severe than that surely they needed to keep him in, do more tests, get a psychologist to talk to him.

This fic includes a lot of different fandoms. I have not come accross many that uses more than three fandoms. In the beginning things will jump around as I introduce the different character. Hopefully I can get them to blend without too much difficulty. One way to think of this is as a soap opera or TV show that has many characters in it.
