Just saw someone call AO3 a "cp-website" and I'm gonna just-

Like I know every time the Archive has a fundraiser some people will crawl out of the woodworks and spout bullcrap, but geez-

If you don't like AO3, fine, that's your opinion. But don't call it a "cp-website", nor demonize people who donate to their fundraiser, from which a large part of the funds goes to KEEPING THE SERVERS AND HAVING PROPER LEGAL PROTECTION.

You know one of the main reasons why AO3 was created? Because in the "old days", if someone didn't like the fact that you, I dunno, wrote some wholesome gay fic online, they could report it and you might just lose your whole fic without warning, because think of the children, right? And to really put icing on the cake, your account might be deleted too. 🙃

Or, like I experienced, it won't just be one or three reports that get your fic taken down. Critics United for example was a group of these ~lovely~ people who would go on people's fics and suggest (harass) the author on how to change their fic to be "improved upon" (aka sanitize the fuck out of it so there is no trace of what they saw as gross/bad/wrong/cringe/sinful/etc.). If they didn't manage to harass you into deleting, they'd just mass report you.

I got literal death and rape threats for writing a Spamano version of Beauty and the Beast, told I was a criminal and that my parents should've killed me in my crib.

ALL OVER A STUPID LITTLE SELFINDULGENT FIC.

They even went so far as to track my username down from Fanfiction.net to Wattpad, and only once I got it on AO3 was the story able stay up because they had no way of harassing or reporting me like they could before, because I could easily turn my comments off to "registered users only" or even to "moderate comments." and that scared them off.

This was in 2016 by the way. Not even a decade ago. Now I could even block people if I want on AO3, so it gets harder to harass me, even if I did care.

But like yes, I agree on the fact that fics with cp are allowed on the site is rather gross. I would never write nor read it. But you know what helps with this?

AO3 HAS THIS TAGGING SYSTEM IN WHICH YOU CAN TAG AND FILTER OUT THE THINGS YOU DON'T LIKE, SUCH AS FICS WITH THE UNDERAGE WARNING :D

And guess what? It works great! I never have to see fics with cp in it, because I filter my fics. And even if I see that I accidentally clicked on a fic like that? I click out of the page and move the fuck on.

People on AO3 can and have written the most repulsive shit known to man, but more often than not, it's tagged with big warnings in the description. I have read cringy and horrifying fics that still made me nauseous to think back on, that have changed how I look at certain characters. And guess what?

THEY STILL DESERVE TO EXIST AND BE READ BY OTHERS.

Besides, there is a very fine line as to what some people define concepts like cp. Like I define it as minors being forced/manipulated into sexual situations, while others might look at an adult anime character who looks like a little kid and say that they shouldn't be sexualized. We are both correct in our own digital space there.

I don't like "shota/lolita" nsfw stuff, others do, and so I am just letting those people be and I avoid that content. Same with scat, or watersports, or cnc. Avoid, click away, goodbye. I don't demand that all "they look young but they're actually an adult!" types of media should be banned, nor that people who enjoy (reading about) sex with bodily fluids should be publically shamed, or that people who consentually enjoy the dark fantasty of being forced should be treated like an actual rapist.

And that's really what this is about. Don't like it, don't read/look at it. This whole "but they are allowing xyz and I don't like that!!" argument is basically becoming the same right-wing argument as "but I see xyz as wrong/bad/a sin and therefor nobody should be allowed to enjoy it."

If AO3 were to be forced to ban one thing, like people dealing with their childhood SA by writing a fic about it, who is to say they won't be forced to ban something like CNC next? What about kink? Queerness? Because that is the road a lot of right-wing people want you antis to take.

It's a main reason AO3 has fundraisers. For the servers to stay up. For legal support when a company claims fanfic is bad. For times that those things might get more expensive to maintain.

And because AO3 is of the few websites that allow everyone, especially queer people, to make art and have that art be protected from those that wish to destroy anything they do not like. And yes, that protection includes protecting work made by "bad" people.

So chill, skip over that fic you don't want to see, don't donate to or interact with AO3 if you don't want to, and maybe touch some grass? That would be great.

HET GRENSGEBIED VAN FRIES LANDSCHAP EN AMERIKAANS STADSGEZICHT

Marije Bouman brengt abstract poëtisch werk dat voortkomt uit de passie voor de natuur. De composities relateren aan wolkenluchten en landschappen. In enkele gebaren is de verf in het beeld gezet. Acrylverf op rijstpapier op doek, aquarelverf op papier. Het betreffen een grensgebied. Het terrein tussen droom en werkelijkheid. Het niemandsland tussen abstractie en realiteit. Een omgeving die zich voordoet in gedachten bij het zichtbare onderwerp. Kijk in het rond, aandachtig naar wat je ziet. Sluit de ogen, dan verschijnt dit beeld op het netvlies. Als het ware een projectie achter de oogleden. 

De schilderijen van Marije Bouman, zoals te zien bij galerie Alta Bosca in Gorredijk, zijn gezet in zachte pasteltinten. Nergens bederft een donderslag bij heldere hemel de atmosfeer. Het wolkige aanbrengen van de verf straalt tederheid uit en liefde voor de materie. In gemengde techniek op papier kan de kunstenaar feller uit de hoek komen. Ook de aquarel heeft een aangescherpte tong. Wanneer Bouman de abstractie verlaat om in realiteit aan te spreken, zie ik minder gedicht en meer verhaal. Dan wordt de poëzie van de schepping het proza van het landschap. De dichterlijke vrijheid is een verhalende non-fictie geworden. Ik denk een golf in de branding te zien. Een monumentale wolk boven dat Friese dorp aan de horizon. Een beekje tussen groen, een paadje in het bos. 

De werken van Marije Bouman stemmen verlangend. Een heimwee naar hoe aangenaam en aantrekkelijk de natuur kan zijn. Zonder besmetting en vervuiling door het actuele misbruik van de aarde. Zo zoals het was en waarvan we kennisnemen hoe het kan zijn, nog. Bouman ervaart de ruimte van het landschap. De oneindige beweeglijkheid van water, licht en lucht, de natuur. Iedere dag oogt het verschillend en ziet ze andere dingen. Het water ligt nooit stil. De lucht is nooit hetzelfde. Het licht valt altijd anders. Een weerspiegeling van iets ongrijpbaars dat heel werkelijk is. In haar werk probeert ze dit ongrijpbare begrijpelijk te maken. 

Die tere verwerking van het landschap staat in schril contrast met de stalen objecten van Ids Willemsma. In dezelfde expositieruimte zijn twee van zijn werken op sokkels neergezet. Feitelijk horen ze niet bij de tentoonstelling, maar zijn er wel in zichtbaar. Ze vallen stevig op en passen zich door de tegenstelling juist wonderwel aan. Bij Alta Bosca staan een danser gestileerd in staal, en vleugels met veren van ijzer. Willemsma is een meester in het vereenvoudigen van meervoudige voorstellingen. Een enkele beweging van het lichaam kan voldoende zijn om te smeden in staal. Dynamische abstractie, het vrije vers in cortenstaal.

Schilder Martin de Jong houdt van steden. Hoe groter, hoe beter. Hoe hoger, hoe mooier. Zakelijke gebouwen, woontorens, met in de gevels rijen gerangschikte ramen. Complexiteit daagt hem uit. In de stad heb je geen last van de horizon. Daar staat het landschap overeind – hoe hoger de gebouwen des te verticaler de blik. Zijn schilderijen zijn geïnspireerd op New York, het zijn portretten van deze metropool. Een wiskundige opbouw gevat in strakke verticalen en rechtlijnige horizontalen. De regelmaat onderbroken door rijen ramen die in cadans donker of verlicht zijn. Er hangen enkele van deze composities in Alta Bosca. Maar De Jong toont daar voornamelijk zijn recente werk onder de noemer ARK, gereedschap. Het doek en penseel heeft hij aan de kant gelegd. Hij gebruikt het materiaal voor houtbewerking dat zijn overleden vader hem naliet. Deze erfenis is voor Martin het begin van nieuwe inzichten en een gewijzigde manier van werken. 

De schilder kan als timmerman ruimtelijk werken. Eerder schilderde hij bouwvolumes, nu zaagt en timmert hij de afmetingen uit planken. Hout is na de verf zijn taal van spreken geworden. Eerst heeft hij zich het ambacht van zijn vader eigen gemaakt. Daarin zag hij een kans om de afstand die hij had gevoeld tussen hemzelf – de kunstenaar – en zijn vader – een man van ambacht en traditie – alsnog te verkleinen, schijft Feico Hoekstra in de catalogus bij de tentoonstelling. “Houten stadsgezichten maken, dat ging hij doen. Iets in de geest van dat stadsgrachtje aan de muur van zijn atelier, een staaltje inlegwerk van de oude De Jong.” Niet meteen kent hij de weg in het hout. Onwennig begint hij eenvoudig te werken in een enkele laag als maakt hij een tekening. Gaandeweg raakt hij handig en kunnen er meer lagen bij komen. Hij raakt gedreven en bedreven. “De paradox is dat hij met verf en kwast elk probleem de baas was, maar zich nu zonder zijn vertrouwde materiaal en gereedschap veel vrijer voelt.”

De wandobjecten ademen nog de stad. De reliëfs associëren aan het stadsgezicht dat gezien is in de schilderijen. Een collage van figuren gezaagd in en uit hout. Soms onbeschilderd gelaten of de sporen van eerder gebruik dragend. Maar ook geverft met acrylverf of kleur gegeven door verf en epoxyhars. Bij de meest rudimentaire vormen zijn de kruiskopschroeven storend zichtbaar. Met de huid van hars krijgt het materiaal een industrieel karakter. Dan is het stadium van experimenteren en uitproberen voorbij. De schetsen in hout zijn gemaakt. Het echte werk kan beginnen. Hij neemt afstand van het traditionele stadsgezicht. Door het samenvoegen van gezaagde contouren van torenflats en wolkenkrabbers ontstaat een soort van kroonluchter. Met behulp van een motortje aan het plafond kan de mobile draaien. Door dat bewegen in de ruimte wisselen de perspectieven en valt de aanleiding voor de vorm amper nog op.

So I've been replaying "Unpacking" again, and I feel like writing down my thoughts on the game, but mostly about what I like to call the "Boyfriend level". There will be spoilers for the game in this, so I will continue below the cut, and please play this game if you have the chance.

Okay, so, as many of you know, Unpacking is about you taking on the role of a girl growing up and moving house throughout her life, unpacking her belongings and filling the new space with them. And as you go, you learn more and more about our MC. Starting with her childhood bedroom, then her going to college to study illustration, and then her moving in with her roommates, who are all nerds just like her.

And then, we get to the infamous boyfriend. And even playing this for the first time, the space felt... off. Before, our MC lived in places that were filled with personal touches, colours and trinkets. The BF's place is mostly grey, hyper-modern. Of course, there are personal touches, and hints at his hobbies, like the coffee-making supplies and the collection of videogames. But it feels.. off. The things that our MC brings to this house clash with the obvious aesthetic this guy has.

Now, aesthetics aside, there is something else that made me feel frustrated and a little uncomfortable about this level. Something that many people who played this game probably noticed too, and something very familiar to those of us who date cishet men.

This man hasn't even made space for you in the house.

Like yeah, sure, there is enough room for you to put your stuff away, but many things are placed in such a way that you're forced to move things aside to make space. Like the drawers in the bedroom. Lord almighty, the drawers. Underwear and socks are strewn around inside, forcing you to rearrange it so you can put your own damn stuff in. You even need to move his clothes and damn SLIPPERS in order to put everything away neatly.

Same as the kitchen. Dude, you have more than enough cabinet space, use it?? Put your coffee supplies in one place, not all around the kitchen, and why the fuck are you using a whole drawer for two tools??

It is frustratingly familiar, mostly because the game is about you doing all the unpacking and rearranging yourself. You are already cleaning up after this man, and you haven't even fully moved in yet.

On top of that, while moving in of course means you'll have to put many of your belongings amongst his, you can't even hang up your diploma in a proper place. I mean, yeah, with the "place objects everywhere" option you could hang it in the bathroom, but you should be able to at least hang something you're proud of in the living space or the bedroom. Your drawing supplies need to be tucked away too, or lost in his things.

No wonder this girl moves back out not even two years later.

And the "moving back in with your parents" level is just.. heartbreaking. The music is sad, and you can feel the depression just oozing from this level. The photo of the boyfriend and MC has to either be hidden away or pinned to the corkboard with one pin through his face.

Luckily, the next level where she gets her very own apartment fills me with joy. Finally, there is a space you can fully embrace as your own, not a student flat you can't permanently stay in, or a place you share with others. Every room is yours to make your own, especially the studio.

And then, the girlfriend moves in.

And it's so different from when the MC moved in with her boyfriend. She's made space for her new partner, made room in the closet, and space on the bookshelves. And instead of clashing, the gf's things complement the home and tell who she is.

She graduated from some type of film school. She adores plants and cares for them a lot. She's Southern or Eastern Asian, or even a mix of both, judging from the dragon statue, the spices, and the cute tiger plush she clearly got to compliment the little piglet, either as a gift or something she got herself. There are books and a beautiful blanket in the moving boxes, and she just feels... safe.

Where I could picture the MC tiptoeing around the boyfriend's aesthetic, doing all of this unpacking by herself, the girlfriend feels like she's unpacking with us, bringing warmth and non-judgement along, making the apartment a home.

And what an ending. An actual house where both of them can be happy, where they can be who they want to be, and where their bundle of joy will be raised with love.

I love this game so much.
