ok so for xg, i really have to say that their concept is really cool and they pull it off but i don't really vibe with how much they take from black culture it's a little scary i'm not even gonna lie. like the line between appropriating and appreciating is a little blurry for them in my opinion. also a little confused with the whole global group but like only promoting in korea while they sing mainly in english. most of my negative (?) opinions well not really negative on them are more issues on their company and stylists i do really like the girls though. they're all seem so cool and have cute bond with each other and even hikaru! i will also say they eat up their concepts all the damn time. i still haven't listened to their new stuff but it's really cool that they included sign language into "girl gang"!

for these girls, i'm not entirely familiar with ALL the details with their company and law suit but i will say that it’s actually in fucking sane how big cupid was like SOME OF MY SECOND GRADERS KNEW THE CUPID DANCE (tiktok ver tho) LIKE WHAT????

also the way they could be nominated for a grammy makes me giggle like those girls were not tryna make billboard or crush charts like they did. lowkey want them to win a grammy just for the plot like it would be so dramatic considering how apparently the girls might get blacklisted for "defying their company" by asking for financial transparency and people are reading it as the girls are money hungry BUT EVEN IF THEY WERE LIKE BITCH IF I WAS NUGU AND THEN MY SONG BLEW INTERNATIONALLY LIKE THEM I WOULD BE ASKING FOR PAYCHECK CAUSE WTF??

also the way everyone in that damn company is tryna get their slice of money from that song makes me laugh cause damn would u really be tryna take credit for them if the girls were nugu? no.

someone mentioned how itzy didn't have that much competition when they first debuted so it was really just them dominating fourth gen at one point in their careers but with THE AMOUNT OF GGS IN THE INDUSTRY RN ITS INSANE to stay relevant or have chart topping songs every comeback like that's just not possible

i will say that cake isn't my favorite def needs time to marinate with me but i love yuna's part so much also chesire was really good imo and i really liked all the bsides from that era which is a first. kinda surprised it didn't blow up more

overall, the girls have made an impact in the kpop community and yeah they're not on top like they were during loco era or earlier but i still love them

Seashells are so important to beaches for a whole host of reasons.

🐚Over-shelling can affect hermit crabs because it reduces the availability of suitable shells for them to inhabit. Hermit crabs rely on empty shells of other creatures for protection and shelter. When there are too few shells available, hermit crabs may be forced to inhabit inadequate shells & pollution as homes, which can hinder their growth and make them more vulnerable to predators and environmental stressors. This can ultimately impact their survival and reproductive success.

🐚Shells provide homes or attachment surfaces for algae, sea grass, sponges, coral and a host of other microorganisms.

🐚Animals such as decorator crabs and octopus use shells as camouflage and many fish use shells as hiding places to avoid predators.

🐚Shells help to stabilize beaches and anchor seagrass.

🐚Shells are used by shorebirds to build nests.

🐚When shells break down, they provide nutrients for the organisms living in the sand or for those that build their own shells. (Shells are a major source of calcium.) I’m a firm believer in when we know better, we do better. I once shelled, and then when I learned all of this, I returned all shells that were not sprayed with a clear varnish to the beach & watched the marine hermit crabs go wild changing shells that were so needed!

Blackwater Dive

2024, hand bleached and dyed denim, cotton batting and thread

inspired by blackwater photography of plankton! this was my first time layering bleach painting. All the silhouettes were painted with bleaching gel, loosely tie dyed, and then bleached again to make the highlights. I quilted the piece using my free motion foot to outline each individual animal and tacked down the rest of the quilt with small satin stitches that remind me of marine snow. I dyed bias tape to match. super happy with this one and excited to show it in a gallery setting soon!

Shellback Crabs: these crabs create their own shields out of clamshells; they have semi-membranous bodies that can be pressed into the contours of a shell, producing a suction mechanism that holds the shell in place

The members of this genus (Hypoconcha) have a series of unique adaptations that facilitate this kind of camouflage behavior. Many of the Dromiidae crabs (e.g. hermit crabs, sponge crabs, shellback crabs, etc.) are equipped with a specialized pair of legs that enables the crab to hold a shell, sea sponge, and/or ascidian against their body, but shellback crabs also have a flexible, semi-membranous body that can be tucked more firmly into the contours of a bivalve shell, producing a suction mechanism that keeps the shell firmly locked in place.

The body of the shellback crab is also covered in a very fine layer of hair-like structures called setae, and when the crab presses itself against the shell, these membranous "hairs" can take on an almost translucent appearance, particularly around the margins of the crab's body.

I recently posted some photos/info about some of the crabs in the genus Lamarckdromia (which belongs to the same family) and as I was doing the background research for that post, I was just kind of mesmerized by all of these weirdly adorable crabs that seem to exist within the Dromiidae family tree. Each genus has its own unique adaptations that allow the crabs to use specific materials for camouflage -- some of them use living sponges, clamshells, ascidians, etc.

And I could not stop laughing at the little faces on these crabs. They've all got the same bemused/indignant expression...as if some random asshole has just walked up to them, shoved them over, and announced to the entire ocean that there's a crab hiding beneath that disguise; as if that actually happens to them quite a lot, and they're getting really sick of it.
