Take the memory, leave the shell! Watch what happens when we return seashells to the beach & marine hermit crabs!

Seashells are so important to beaches for a whole host of reasons.

🐚Over-shelling can affect hermit crabs because it reduces the availability of suitable shells for them to inhabit. Hermit crabs rely on empty shells of other creatures for protection and shelter. When there are too few shells available, hermit crabs may be forced to inhabit inadequate shells & pollution as homes, which can hinder their growth and make them more vulnerable to predators and environmental stressors. This can ultimately impact their survival and reproductive success.

🐚Shells provide homes or attachment surfaces for algae, sea grass, sponges, coral and a host of other microorganisms.

🐚Animals such as decorator crabs and octopus use shells as camouflage and many fish use shells as hiding places to avoid predators.

🐚Shells help to stabilize beaches and anchor seagrass.

🐚Shells are used by shorebirds to build nests.

🐚When shells break down, they provide nutrients for the organisms living in the sand or for those that build their own shells. (Shells are a major source of calcium.) I’m a firm believer in when we know better, we do better. I once shelled, and then when I learned all of this, I returned all shells that were not sprayed with a clear varnish to the beach & watched the marine hermit crabs go wild changing shells that were so needed!

✨One outstanding oystercatcher✨

Today, we want to take a moment to appreciate one of our black oystercatchers who celebrated her 30th bird-day this year!

Born in 1993 on Oregon's rugged coast, this black oystercatcher triumphed over adversity. She was rescued at four days old with a wounded wing. Deemed non-releasable due to her young age and lack of survival skills, she embarked on a unique journey, spending time in Florida and Alaska before finding her permanent home with us 21 years ago.

This oystercatcher is quite the character— known for her love of clams and preference for personal space. We’ve enjoyed getting to know her over the years. Come check her out in the Sandy Shore & Aviary exhibit and witness her clam-cracking craftsmanship firsthand.

Is Ghon alright enough to notice Tartar's new manner of speaking? If so, how's he feel about it?

If only Ghon could speak. At least he could still think. He did admire Tartar's wordplay, but the lack of rhythm in his speech irked him. Music meant the world to Ghon. It was how he broke out, how he emerged from the frothy cluster that was the jellyfish hivemind. It was refreshing, and if there was anything he liked it was a good beat. Unfortunately, the only "beat" he could feel was the throbbing cascading through his whole body from that beat down. Was that normal?

Ruri sighs into her ladle for a second, just savoring the flavor before she looks back at you, down at you awkwardly holding the spoon and snorts, almost spitting some of the liquid out of her nose! Her free hand covers her nostrils as she swallows. "Sorry, sorry! You just look so cute~" She says, now grinning.

I look up quickly when she snorts, but laugh along with her. “You said you wouldn’t tease me!” I laugh.

after browsing some comments, I think a funnier turn the ithaca saga could've taken is the suitors beat the living shit out of telemachus and then drown him in the ocean, and when they're taunting odysseus about it he just looks at the ocean, raises his eyebrow and posiden spits up a very much alive and in tact but also incredibly confused telemachus.
