"Hoops with Nets" - Mark Halliday
In South Philadelphia the b-ball hoops in the playgrounds and parks mostly had no nets, no nets on the rims—they’d been stolen or ripped down after being torn by leaping teenagers. When my son was a boy the difference mattered because he loved basketball, he loved the Sixers, he loved shooting baskets and there is beautiful satisfaction when a good shot falls through the net— “Swish” we said—“Nothin’ but net”— and so as I moved around town I always noticed where the hoops had nets so Nick and I could shoot there.
The difference mattered.  Life should be a certain way but often the right way becomes unavailable— the nets disappear—you have to be alert to find the courts where a perfect shot really does go swish.  Life has disappointments but you don’t want your boy to feel that life is mainly or mostly disappointing or that the Sixers on TV are absurdly far from his real life—
because he needs to believe that life allows moments of sublimity—swish—
so even now when Nick is almost forty wherever I see good intact nets on the rims I make a mental note for half a second: Nick and I could play here. The difference matters.

Milano Adesso
Mark Halliday
They are speaking rapidly in Milan right now unacceptably far from me at tables in sunlight, their sunglasses poised adeptly upon their dark hair, their hands inflecting thoughts, they understand themselves to be splendidly alive adesso and to waste it would be a provincial sort of stupidity somehow not unrelated to American crudity so they laugh bright-briefly and pivot into the next current in their silver stream of Milanese in which they take for granted three or seven insights cultural, political, post-industrial millennial digital toward which I will stumble three or five years hence if even then. Light breeze flicks the piazza causing quick adjustments of handsome intelligent hair in Milan right now as the conversation pivots like a skier S-curving through implications of non-stupid passion (with irony incorporated) sexual certainly though inseparable from books and fifty websites I will never visit. Milan, Milano, Milano adesso si far far aye aye flow on great Po great Danube mighty Rhine aye ripple on old Seine
in a Kansas of muddled passive co-optedness though I be while brightness streams on elsewhere mythically we shall all quicksoon enough find the sea!

On the missing short story
It was going to be great. I wrote it more than seven years ago, in two bursts after work with mugs of tea at the kitchen table. It was really, seriously great. It was called The Writing Group. Voiced by an unnamed female protagonist who surprises herself by deciding to leave the group she was instrumental in setting up. It contained a man with a ‘Darwinesque beard’. It was the best thing that I…

However, with just…

She didn't think she was hot enough to play Venus, so this happened (from My Heart Belongs, her autobiography):
Richard [Halliday, Martin's husband] dealt with my problem in a most imaginative way. He asked if I had ever been to the Metropolitan Museum. Of course, I hadn’t. So he took me to that huge place, led me to where the statues are, and said, “Look, this is a Venus.” We must have seen fifty varieties: tall ones, short ones, even one who was noticeably broad of beam. All were marked “Venus.” “You see?” Richard asked. “Each sculptor has his own idea of Venus. They aren’t all Venus de Milo.” After this had sunk in, he said, “You can play Venus. You’re going to play her wearing the most beautiful clothes in the world.”
And another song that's very far from the Peter Pan image:

It was indeed Lestrade, who had ascended the stairs while we were talking, and who now entered the room. The assurance and jauntiness which generally marked his demeanour and dress were, however, wanting. His face was disturbed and troubled, while his clothes were disarranged and untidy. He had evidently come with the intention of consulting with Sherlock Holmes, for on perceiving his colleague he appeared to be embarrassed and put out. He stood in the centre of the room, fumbling nervously with his hat and uncertain what to do. “This is a most extraordinary case,” he said at last—“a most incomprehensible affair.” “Ah, you find it so, Mr. Lestrade!” cried Gregson, triumphantly. “I thought you would come to that conclusion. Have you managed to find the Secretary, Mr. Joseph Stangerson?” “The Secretary, Mr. Joseph Stangerson,” said Lestrade gravely, “was murdered at Halliday's Private Hotel about six o'clock this morning.”
Lestrade enters! And Gregson's neat theory at once goes out of the window.
And that is where we the story stops for today. I'm so tempted to read on, but I'll refrain myself

Ready Player One
Tumblr media
The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse.  But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance).  The movie Ready Player One showcases mazes as a significant element in its storyline, for example the logo features a maze, with the prize being an egg. The movie takes place in a sci-fi world of virtual gaming, where players must explore and solve various mazes and puzzles to progress in the game and ultimately find the hidden Easter egg.
This is one of my favourite movies of all time and this would spark the idea of me wanting to create a game about mazes.

June 30 marked the end of California’s state-run youth prison system, the Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Prompted by the passage of Senate Bill 823, the move was several years in the making thanks to the work of advocates who challenged horrible conditions behind the walls of those institutions for decades. But not everyone is celebrating.
Jahzara Halliday was one of several organizers who shut down a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting in late July in response to officials’ lack of action toward years of dysfunction and harm within the county’s youth legal system. The final straw was the fatal overdose of Bryan Diaz in May and the reopening of Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey, California, which had been closed due to unsuitable and abusive conditions, to house the youth that had to be moved from two other LA County Juvenile halls that were closed due to reports of abuse.
“There’s currently 247 vacant Probation Department division positions that they’re still paying for, and these people don’t even go to work. All that money can be diverted into mental health, housing,” Halliday said.
For Halliday, the issue is personal. She’s been navigating the red tape of reentry resources on behalf of her sibling, who was refused mental health treatment while in jail and is looking for assistance with housing and health care. And without that help, she’s worried that he’ll end up incarcerated again despite all their efforts.
“The system is not a place to be. Jail is not a place to be,” Halliday said.
Like organizers across the state, people in Los Angeles are urging local decision-makers to invest in community alternatives. The closure of DJJ was a landmark decision that appears to position California as a trailblazer in criminal legal reform. But without sufficient alternatives that address the root causes of incarceration or why youth initially come into contact with the legal system, many advocates fear that whatever follows will replicate the same harms.

Dial M for Murder (1954)
Tumblr media
Dial M for Murder plays like a film you might’ve seen before but in reverse, which makes it feel brand new. Director Alfred Hitchcock maintains a consistent level of suspense throughout, adapts the play to the screen marvelously - with help from the author, Frederick Knott, who also wrote the screenplay - and the actors are all clearly having a great time helping tie our stomachs in knots.
Margot Wendice (Grace Kelly) has been having an affair with American crime-fiction writer Mark Halliday (Robert Cumings). He’s coming to visit. They don't realize her husband, Tony (Ray Milland) knows of her infidelity. He plans on having her assassinated as revenge. As her husband, this means her money will continue to keep him comfortable long after she's dead.
You know the rule in heist movies, where if they tell you what the plan is, it isn’t going to work, and if they don’t tell you, it will? This film takes this rule and turns it on its head. We know what Tony has planned for Margot. He’s been setting the machine in motion for a while now. It doesn’t seem like much could go wrong, but it does. Now, you’re torn. Much more back in the ‘50s but today, you don’t exactly sympathize 100% with Margot. She’s been having an affair, after all. Not that you sympathize with the would-be murderer instead, but he’s got something she doesn’t. As the scheming, vengeful husband, Ray Milland is excellent. He’s charming and appealing even before proving how resourceful he can be when things go wrong. You admire his ability to improvise and adapt. You don’t want the plan to go so awry that he’ll get caught - this would cause the movie to end. You kind of want it to go off without a hitch… but not too well.
Seeing the pieces fall into place is suspenseful and darkly fun. You put yourself in the shoes of all of the characters but primarily, in Tony’s. Everyone’s seen those true-crime TV series that tell you what the villain had planned and how they got caught. We’ve all taken mental notes about the mistakes those people made just in case. Not that you'd ever want to kill anyone, but if you did, you'd want it to be the same kind of perfect crime as Tony's. Unfortunately, there are so many things that could go wrong, it seems impossible… but then again, maybe it isn’t. Either way, it’s been quite the ride.
Dial M for Murder contains many gasp-worthy surprises to maintain the intrigue and suspense. You’ll hardly notice the limited number of locations - a clear giveaway this was originally made to be a play. Certain key shots break the usual moves we’d seen on a stage at just the right spots to show off a key detail - usually an indicator that something’s gone wrong. The marvellous black-and-white photography strips away all the distractions you’d get if it were in colour. It’s all about the scheme and the people involved. It makes for a memorable film. Perhaps not as flashy as some of Hitchcock’s best-known pictures, but excellent nonetheless. You’ll be shocked by how quickly the whole thing flies by.
I had seen Dial M for Murder before and I can’t explain why I didn’t fall in love with it at first sight. It’s delightfully twisted, magnificently performed, tightly written and it’ll keep you giddily nervous up until the very end. (April 9, 2021)
