A Venture Exclusive where I talk Spider-verse where the creative team talks about how it has some similarities to Star Wars
Tumblr media
Welcome back to Venture Onward as I discuss the happenings of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse. According to writer-producer Christopher Miller, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse acts for the intended superhero trilogy like the 1980 Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back accomplished for its franchise.
Speaking with Empire Magazine about the forthcoming (2018) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel, Miller stated, "People who've seen Across... have told us that it feels like The Empire Strikes Back of the Spider-Verse franchise," counting, "It shows you worlds you haven't seen, and it's an emotional story that ends in a place where you need to see the third one. So, yeah: this is our Empire."
The Empire Strikes Back is considered among numerous Star Wars fanatics as the franchise's most excellent installment, but when it was first released in 1980, they didn't know if a joyful finish was on the way for their cherished idols. Despite succeeding in a big fight against the Empire in the prior the (1977) Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back jilted off on a tremendous loss with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) cutting after standing frozen in carbonite, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) discovering his father is Darth Vader and holding his hand cut off, and the Bespin colony Cloud City slipping beneath Imperial control. Moviegoers had to pause for three years for the (1983) Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi to determine what occurred next.
Whatever the circumstances and conclusion of Across the Spider-Verse, individuals will not keep waiting as extended as Star Wars fanatics initially did for Return of the Jedi. Across the Spider-Verse is set to release in theaters on June 2, 2023, while the third installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is slated for March 29, 2024. Initially, the two films were titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) and (Part Two), indicating that the former leads right into the latter.
About Miller's recognition of new worlds in Across the Spider-Verse, it appears doubtful that the Star Wars planets Hoth, Dagobah, and Bespin introduced by The Empire Strikes Back will create an impression. Still, the sequel is guaranteed to feature five new universes. Into the Spider-Verse mostly held to (Shameik Moore) Miles Morales' home reality, but Across the Spider-Verse will see those belonging to Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), Spider-Man India (Karan Soni) and Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), and a fifth universe is existing held under wraps. Each galaxy is distinctive and animated with its distinct style, co-director Joaquim Dos Santos previously said, "We've essentially made five films in one."
Aside from that, fans were regaled to a brief but stunning glimpse at the reality of Spider-Man India from the forthcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Mumbattan, whose character is an amalgam of Manhattan and Mumbai.
Featured on a cover for Empire, the print catches Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy on a tower as they look at Mumbattan, which is vibrant. Also attending is a third wall-crawler, which hinges onto the structure. Before this, fans saw Pavitar Prabhakar, aka Spider-Man India, in some layout art. A following statement reported that Deadpool and Deadpool 2 star Karan Soni had been cast as the vocalist of Spider-Man India.
Aside from Spider-Man India, it was verified by co-writer Christopher Miller that Across the Spider-verse's poster contained a variant of The Spectacular Spider-Man's Spidey. However, ex-showrunner Greg Weisman would say that Miller's guarantee about said sign "is not the same as confirmation that [that version of Spider-Man is] in the movie." More lately, Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man performer Tom Holland was said to pop up in Across the Spider-Verse. However, this has yet to get an official verification from either Sony or Marvel Studios.
But while Across the Spider-Verse presents new web-slingers, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse star Nicolas Cage endorsed before this year that he wasn't invited to continue his position as Spider-Man Noir for the previous film, stating he didn't learn what the odds were of the character emerging in it. "I wish they would [bring the character back]," he persisted. "I love Spider-Man Noir, too. I think that's a great character. Spider-Man's the coolest superhero. And then you combine that with Cagney and Bogart and Edward G. Robinson -- come on, it's a great character."
On the issue of Across the Spider-Verse itself, senior character animator Ere Santos talks about its plot might be a mature one in 2022, remembering how challenging it was to function in the movie. "But what kind of kept us going was we'd be frustrated, or something would change, or a sequence was cut, and then we'd see a new render, and we'd be like, 'Okay, alright? Let's go, let's go,'" counted Santos. "And also, some of the choices characters were making in the story were like, 'What? Okay, all right. This is a kids' movie? I guess it's not a kids' movie. Okay, cool. Yeah, that's good.' So it's very, very, super exciting to me."
The alternate planets in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are so in-depth that separately could stand as its animated film.
In a continued interview with Empire, the filmmakers behind the forthcoming Spider-Verse film talk about how the ambitious sequel could exceed the original. Joaquim Dos Santos, an associate of the triad of directors behind Across the Spider-Verse along with Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, explained the new dimensional planets as “robust.” “We’ve essentially made five films in one,” stated Santos. Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man India, Spider-Man 2099, and Spider-Punk are four Spider-Man icons who will hold their visually-distinct planets studied in the film. While the fifth Spider-Man planet is being maintained a mystery, writer-producer Phil Lord tells its visuals as “jaw-dropping.”
With Across the Spider-Verse arriving as a sequel to the 2018 universe-crossing sensation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, fan anticipations for mind-bending wrenches are elevated. “Our contract with the audience is to bring them something they’ve never seen before,” stated writer-producer Christopher Miller. “The first film was about bringing characters into Miles’ dimension. This is about Miles heading off into others.” Also, Shameik Moore, who portrays Miles Morales, aka Spider-Man, believes the sequel will top its critically-acclaimed precursor. “If the sky was the limit last time, the sky is now the floor,” Moore said. “We’re stepping on it and looking at Jupiter!”
Of course, the crew will be back concurrently in the voice cast. Aside from Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, who was in Hawkeye, reprises her role as Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Gwen or Spider-Woman. Oscar Isaac, who was in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, joins them and plays Miguel O'Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, an Irish-Mexican superhero living in a futuristic rendition of New York City. Peter David and Rick Leonardi made the character in 1992 for Marvel’s imprint of future-inspired comics called "Marvel 2099." Another new character entering the cast is Spider-Woman. She amalgams the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman from Earth-616 and Valerie the Librarian, an African-American woman who evolved into Spider-Woman in the 1970s Marvel Comics label Spidey Super Stories. Issa Rae performs her.
Across the Spider-Verse will include some mighty big Miles Morales-style Air Jordans to load when it eventually comes, some four-and-a-half years after its precursor arrives in theaters. Indeed, analysts applauded the initial Into the Spider-Verse for its gorgeous animation and a new outlook on the Spider-Man mythos via the eyes of Morales, the biracial superhero who took the part of Spider-Man from Peter Parker in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. The movie won Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, defeating Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse comes into theaters on June 2, 2023. So that’s it for now. Until then, Venture Onward.

I know people get crushes on fictional characters all the time, but this has gone beyond a crush. I'm infatuated with him. I spend 90% of my time reading about him, watching his scenes, etc. He's the first thing I think of when I wake up and the last thing on my mind before I go to sleep. When I have to deal with real life responsibilities I struggle to get him off my mind and I wind up getting anxious if I go too long without looking at a picture of him.
I have no delusions about this character - I know he's not real.
I've reached a point now where I sometimes cry myself to sleep thinking about this character. The knowledge that he doesn't exist is agonizing. It literally makes my heart ache.

Viewfinder House by Faulkner Architects faces vista of California's Pacific Crest
A request for every room to have a view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains informed the layout of this Californian house by Faulkner Architects.
The primary goal for the family building their home in Truckee – a few miles north of Lake Tahoe – was to capitalise on the site's vista of the Pacific Crest, a ridge of peaks that runs parallel to the US West Coast.
Rooms in the Viewfinder House are all oriented towards the same view
"'Can all of the rooms enjoy this view?' was our client's question on our first site walk," said Faulkner Architects. "This question formed the seed of our conceptual approach to the design of the house."
To achieve this, the local firm divided the 7,200-square-foot (670-square-metre) family home over two levels that are both oriented towards the view, rather than precisely following the slope of the site.
A butterfly roof allows clerestory windows to bring in additional light
The steel base of the lower storey, which connects to the sloped driveway, is more aligned with the street running below. Meanwhile, the upper level is twisted slightly for even better sight lines from the main living spaces.
Recessed apertures created by terraces and overhanging roofs give the project its name: Viewfinder House.
Untreated cedar ceilings, granite flooring and black fixtures are used throughout the home
"Sheathed in a red cedar rain screen and closed on three sides, the boxes open to the Pacific Crest to the southwest," said the studio.
On the exposed side, a covered porch wraps around the ground level and provide access to the outdoor swimming pool from the "play" spaces that include a media room, gym, and bunk room.
Gaps in the cedar rain screen cast patterns onto board-marked concrete walls
An angled metal staircase rises from the pool deck to the upper terrace, which runs the full length of the house.
The cedar slats offer privacy from the road and direct the gaze towards the mountain tops.
An outdoor swimming pool adjoins other areas for play
The upstairs is organised around the central kitchen, living and dining areas, with the main suite to the south and three guest bedrooms in the north wing.
An untreated cedar ceiling creates an inverted triangle across the full plan, lifting up at the sides to further enhance the views and create clerestory windows on the east elevation.
"The ceiling extends out over the porch like a large lens hood, protecting the glass doors from weather and shielding the interior from bright afternoon sun," Faulkner Architects said.
Board-marked concrete walls, granite flooring and black metal fixtures create a pared-back aesthetic through all of the rooms – taking a back seat to the scenery.
Glazed apertures all face southwest towards the mountain peaks
The Pacific Crest view was also carefully considered from the driveway, which ascends to the high side of the house and offers a first look at the distant peaks on arrival at the top of the hill.
"The intentions of the design are clear from this approach: the house gives its undivided attention to the snow-covered mountains, like a camera body twisted on a tripod to capture a distant perspective," said Faulkner Architects.
The cedar screens offer privacy from the road
Founded by Greg Faulkner in 1998, the firm has completed a handful of projects close to Lake Tahoe – a popular area for winter sports and outdoor pursuits.
They include a house with direct access from the ski slopes, a concrete and glass home tucked in an area of woodland, and a dwelling for a family of thrill-seekers.
Photography is by Paul Hamill.

Why I’m Fed Up With “Lucasbashing”...
When the Star Wars movies came out:
A New Hope - It’s violent and warmongering.
The Empire Strikes Back - Darth Vader was lying and Leia should have chosen Luke over Han. Also, it’s a dark story, and we don’t want Star Wars to be dark.
Return of the Jedi - Han has become an idiot. The Ewoks are embarrassing. It’s not serious enough, it’s childish with all of the puppets. The bad guy redeeming himself? The “hero” not winning through fight but through pacifism! The villain is only a broken, sad old guy? How uncool is that?!
The Prequels - It’s not like the classics. The classis were soooo good. The design is different. The setting and costumes are different. Vader was the coolest villain of all times, Anakin Skywalker is a whiny, oversensitive brat. The Jedi are oblivious and arrogant, and here we always thought they were heroes! What is George Lucas thinking of, is he toying with us? We want to see Vader being badass, not to have compassion for his suffering!!!
The Force Awakens (side note: a film made with parallels to “A New Hope” this time in hopes to reconnect with the audience after a pause of ten years) - How boring. It’s an embarrassing rehash of “A New Hope”.
The Last Jedi - We thought Kylo was Vader II (although he’s the whiny sissy type of villain)! We thought Rey was Luke’s daughter or at least Luke II (although she’s a Mary Sue)! It’s all so different!! They are their own persons!!! They have their own character development!!! Disney is ruining the franchise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*banging my head against the next wall*
Who wants superhero stories, please stick to the Marvel movies.
Who wants sex scenes between Ben and Rey, please read fanfiction. There are heaps of stories describing nothing but the two of them going at it like bunnies.
George Lucas had a layout for his saga from the very beginning, hence the “Episode IV, V, and VI” over the titles of the classics. He’s not repeating, diluting and rewarming a movie that was good and successful over and over, only to make more money. This is his lifetime project, not Jaws I, II, III etc. Who expects instant fanboy gratification, please watch something else where you don’t need your brain or your heart to explain to you what the story’s about: compassion, family, forgiveness, love, belonging. It’s not about good against evil, the coolest guy wins, ka-boom, the end; it’s the story of the Force struggling to come into Balance. A man making bad choices because he was pushed to the limits of his endurance almost all of his life and then being redeemed and getting another chance through his grandson who’s in a similar situation is not immoral only because you don’t like the idea, or because you dislike the “villain” personally.
I’m fed up with Lucasbashing. At least we should have some respect for his lifetime work. Or, if we believe we know so much better, think up our own story and see if we can make it as beloved as his. Good luck with that.
Anyone is entitled to his preferences, tastes and expectations. Also, anyone is entitled to self-insert himself into a story and to think what he / she would like to happen or how he / she would have reacted in a certain situation. But please at least try to be as fair as not to mix them up with the actual story. Just because it doesn’t go your way doesn’t mean it’s badly written, not thought out etc. The saga has its flaws of course, but it always had a stringent narrative. That one doesn’t get it or doesn’t even want to get it doesn’t mean it’s not there. The Star Wars saga roots deeply in ancient legends and it contains a lot of symbolism. If you apply the rules and patterns of our modern world and our every day’s experiences to it, you’re naturally in for disappointments.
I have watched all movies and spin-offs last year (the prequels, the sequels so far and Episode IV and V twice), and I have read and thought and written about it ever since January 2018. I daresay I know what I’m talking about.
I may be wrong of course, but I don’t think that I am completely wrong. E.g. I said to my husband that Kylo’s / Ben’s story most probably is the story of a redemption after two days of research. Then I saw the parallels (narrative and visual) with Anakin, read Mark Hamill’s trolling, heard Kylo’s theme ending on a triumphant note in the teaser trailer opposite to Anakin’s theme which has bright notes and ends with The Imperial March. I also remembered that Anakin was a child without a father and that Kylo / Ben is the only Force user we know whose sword looks like a cross, and that he had promised his grandfather that he would finish what he started. Anakin killed the old Jedi Order, putting an end to their arrogance and denial, and started a family of compassionate Force users.
I was not and I am not imagining things. I’m listening.
Have a nice day. :-)

Top 10 Horror Movie Guilty Pleasures:
In no particular order.
1) Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers (1992) - Okay so maybe the graphics don’t quite hold up nowadays, but they’re still the perfect amount of cheesiness. Sleepwalkers follows the mother-son duo Mary and Charles Brady, who are the aforementioned Sleepwalkers, an ancient species who prey on virginal females, needing to consume their life force. There’s a lot of weird sexual energy between the two and there is incest abound. Charles sets his sights on Tanya, one of his classmates, and while he does charm her, he doesn’t count on her being a formidable foe to the two of them. If you love cats, I’d highly recommend this film, seeing as how the Sleepwalkers find themselves enemies in the furry little creatures. It’s also slammed full of fun cameos, including King himself, amongst others like: Tobe Hooper, Clive Barker, Mark Hamill, and more.
Tumblr media
2) Thirteen Ghosts AKA Thir13en Ghosts (2001)- How do you improve upon the gimmicky style of horror icon William Castle? Easy answer, you don’t. But that doesn’t mean that the remake to Castle’s 13 Ghosts (1960) is bad by any means. It’s one of my guiltiest pleasures. After a house fire takes the life of his wife, Arthur and his children are told by his late-uncle’s lawyer that he has inherited a beautiful house. The only problem? The house actually contains multiple spirits, spirits who, more often than not, are out for blood. Thirteen Ghosts is a fun reimagining, it even takes Castle’s original gimmick of Illusion-O (glasses that the audience could use, if they were brave enough to want to view the ghosts) and gives the glasses to the characters themselves, which honestly, is probably even more frightening for those poor souls. It’s the perfect amount of early 2000′s cheese and honestly, any movie starring Matthew Lillard is worth a view from me.
Tumblr media
3&4) The Mummy & The Mummy Returns (1999 & 2001) - While 1999’s The Mummy is technically a remake/reboot of 1932’s The Mummy, it is more of an action film, rather than the horror that is the 1932 version. There are many purists who insist that the original is the very best, but I’m here to just say, I absolutely love and cherish the ‘99 version and its sequel The Mummy Returns. The films follow Rick, Evelyn, Jonathan and an assortment of other characters as they accidentally resurrect ancient evils that they should’ve known better about. There are bits of horrific imagery scattered throughout the films and that’s enough for me to count them amongst some of my favorite horror films. Even with those though, they are light-hearted films with such interesting subject matter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5) Van Helsing (2004) - No one will claim Van Helsing is a masterpiece, and they aren’t wrong. But the movie is wonderful for what it is: an action-packed love letter to the horror monsters of our past. It’s no wonder that this movie holds a special place in my heart, it was directed by Stephen Sommers, the same man who directed both The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. It stars Hugh Jackman as the titular character, Abraham Van Helsing, as he hunts down Dracula. Along the way, Van Helsing comes across Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein’s Monster, and even a werewolf. The story is full of love for the characters and the Gothic aesthetic and, in my opinion, gives the monsters the respect they deserve. It is a must-watch for anyone who loves the monsters who came before us.
Tumblr media
6) Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005) -  Fun fact! Urban Legends: Bloody Mary was directed by Mary Lambert. Who’s Mary Lambert, you may ask? Only the director behind one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations, Pet Semetary (1989)! While this film does not have as much of a following, it still does right by me. The movie follows Sam and her brother David as they try to solve the mystery of Mary Banner, while the children of those responsible for Banner’s untimely death are killed off one-by-one. Being the third movie in the Urban Legend film series, this movie forgoes the slasher premise of the first two films, instead opting to go full supernatural. Some of the deaths have been used before in other films, but it doesn’t make them less effective, i.e; burning to death in a tanning bed will ALWAYS be terrifying. I also absolutely love the song heard throughout each death, “I Will Always Be There,’ performed to perfection by Niki Harris. It completely embodies the time period in which Mary’s innocence and life was lost, and it’s so bone-chillingly amazing.
Tumblr media
7) 5ive Girls (2006) - 5ive Girls is a lesser known supernatural horror film helming from Canada. The only actor in it that is particularly well known is Ron Perlman. For that to be the case honestly sucks, because the acting is so criminally underrated in this film. 5ive Girls takes place at an all-girls Catholic school and follows five different girls along as they all discover they are powered and then immediately begin being possessed. There’s even a sweet romance that buds between two of the girls, Mara and Alex, but seeing as this is a horror movie, long-lasting love is never a guarantee. The film is a neat hidden gem and deserves more praise for the acting of all the young women, who nailed all of their characters wholly.
Tumblr media
8) Stay Alive (2006) - A video game centered movie where if you die in the game, you die in real life? Sign me up. A movie loosely based upon one of the most prolific female serial killers ever known in history? Sign me up even more! Stay Alive never got the credit it deserved and to a degree that’s understandable; for a horror movie based around a group of gamers playing a game, none of them truly feel like they realistically game. The concept is there though and its villain is none other than the Blood Countess herself, Elizabeth Bathory, though her backstory was changed for the film. Bathory in real life was a Countess who was thought to have murdered up to 650 young girls to use their blood as a way of staying young, the movie sets her as a headmistress who murdered 30+ of her students for their youth. The change does not make much sense, but whatever works for the screenwriters works for me, because I still enjoy this movie so much. Sophia Bush’s, October, is a standout character in particular; she’s a take-no-crap type of woman who fights until her bitter end and she provides the rest of the characters with the keys in which to survive Bathory’s depraved game.
Tumblr media
9) Final Destination 3 (2006) - The Final Destination series had a good run, mostly producing great films. One stands above the rest though, and that is Final Destination 3. The plot follows the same layout as the rest of the films, hot young people cheating death and then immediately learning the hard way that death doesn’t allow that sort of nonsense. FD 3 centers around Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s character, Wendy, having the standard vision of a deadly accident, this one being a rollercoaster flying off of its tracks. Winstead portrays Wendy as a somewhat prissy character, but honestly, the girl is smart and does stave off death for quite a while. The DVD for the film also offers one of the coolest bonus features: Choose Your Fate, which allows the viewer to help save lives and in some cases, end the film almost as soon as it starts, allowing the main characters to survive unscathed, though their fates later on aren’t exactly desirable either.
Tumblr media
10) Beyond the Gates (2016) - An innovative and more recent horror film staring horror icon Barbara Crampton? Why isn’t this getting all of the praise it deserves? The film follows two brothers as they are clearing out their father’s video store, seeing as how he has been missing for over half a year. While there, they discover an old interactive VCR game entitled Beyond the Gates and are drawn to playing it. The game is more than it appears though and eventually the brothers find that it is much more than they bargained for. They must then go “beyond the gates” to save their father’s soul and themselves before it is too late. Crampton stars as the games guide, growing more menacing as the film progresses. The film is gorgeous with its retro aesthetic and fun neon colors. You’d be a fool to miss out on this piece.

I've only been into comics for a few years, but I've read enough of the old Flash stuff where I adore the classic incarnations of the Rogues. Honestly curious here: what's it like to be a fan of James Jesse back when he was retgonned around 10 years ago and see him brought back but now all mwahaha crazy evil? I'm way more used to Axel (and all that off-panel character development in Nu52, thanks DC) but even I find this kinda weird. Was James ever crazy evil in any arc?
Tumblr media
^- me 90% of the time someone says James is coming back to recent media & it’s not a direct continuation of the comics prior to 2004
[ Warning: this is gonna get long and be full of a lot of assumptions. I can never form solid statements and things will get jumbled, because I suck at presenting things ]
[ this is my can of worms hill and you opened it so I’m dYING HERE ]
I mean, back in the earliest ages, no Rogue had a real personality to speak of? They were just “1960s Bad Guy in a different outfit” at the very start, with quirks! Like James having a thing for toys and nuclear powered flying tricycles. It wasn’t until that era ended that they started getting real distinct and into what a lot of ‘classic’ James fans loved and appreciated?
Tumblr media
(I think at least, I’m just One Person here pretending like I even understand HALF of what the ‘classic’ fandom enjoyed. I’m wildly speculating just going off what fanworks I’ve seen produced.)
Tumblr media
(I don’t have all my scans anymore but I’ll toss in scans when I have them)
Tumblr media
But that’s when we started getting things like James actually having specified friendships with certain people
Tumblr media
or clear distaste towards others, and when you could tell he was more of a wild card than the others. Or when he decided to fuck off and hang out in Hollywood with Blue Devil for a bit, even siding with Kid Devil to deck out Captain Boomerang.
Tumblr media
Or when he decided to fuck off to Gotham, to mess with Catwoman by pretending he didn’t know who she was, but absolutely knew who she was because of how she walked and carried herself, but James being James was like “mmmmm long con, nope”
Tumblr media
hey lil Cold, gimme all ur guns and don’t question why I’m in drag xoxo
Even then, he wasn’t shown to be vicious yet! He’d hopped around various places, was still considered A Rogue, A Criminal, and as far as any comic reader could tell by trying to count up how many civilians may have been crossfired at, he had no On Purpose deaths racked? Like, the only thing you could really argue was he may have made someone drive their car off a cliff once, but I’m like 98% sure they’re fine. He’s not a murderer, he’s just here for a laugh and a long-con for funsies because he know he can get away with it!
AND THEN WE GET A LITTLE OLDER, LITTLE DARKER
[ I’M PUTTING A CUT HERE CAUSE AFTER I THREW IT INTO DRAFTS, I REALIZED I GOT REALLY LONG, I’M SORRY IF MY LAYOUT SUCKS ASS FOR THIS. ]

little more 90s Hair. Little more 90s stereotypical “But what if EVERYONE WENT TO HELL” demon plots against Satanic Hockey Hair Neron. And James? still wasn’t evil? He was a little dismissive when everyone ELSE died sure but he still in the end turned around like “nghgng I’m THE ONLY ONE”, purposely got his ass down there, regretted it, and then beat Neron at his own game to save the entire fucking world. Because! He could! And he did it so well. STILL NOT EVIL, even when he had a chance right then and there to take over everything alongside Neron should he so desire. Like, two words, maybe some under the table BJs depending on how you feel about that pairing (I don’t), and bam. He would’ve bested nearly any other villain in the DCU save like, Satan himself. Or i guess one of those world destroyers. But we’ll get back around to those BOY HOWDY WE WILL GET AROUND TO THOSE.
So James! Saves! The world! Sorta! Later they fight Neron again and his kid he somehow had somewhere down the road (it sounds like I’m complaining, i’m not, I love Billy and Mindy both I just wish they showed up like… ever again?) and he sTILL SAVES EVERYONE.

Piper helps by their 90s ponytails combined.
Somewhere around here, because dates and timing aren’t my strong suit, he also goes and messes with Bart for a bit. It’s pretty much a Spy Vs Spy episode, but with less bloodshed.
ANYWAY IT’S AFTER THIS POINT THAT THINGS GET… where I think the majority of “James is a Low Rate Joker” comes from?
For some unknown goddamn reason, in between issues (James wasn’t a Super Frequent Rogue? He’d show up, sure, but in the huge run of the series he’d just kind of vanish for 20 issues at a time and you’d go “welp, guess he’s still alive”) James went super-cop? like, the FBI? For some reason? Hired James “I am a probably still wanted felon, a man who has escaped jail numerous times, probably never served a full sentence, known Trickster and liar” Jesse. to the FBI. And for so many issues it’s like he legit just. Did this. He threatens to shoot Piper who he was up until this very moment, considerably very close friends with (as far as comics would show Rogue/Rogue friendships), unwilling to help his friend clearly framed for murder of his parents and losing his mind by the day. Despite James talking Hart down a little on the whole ‘THE MAYOR IS ROSCOE ADN NOBODY BELIEVES MEEEEEEEE” thing.
Also he steals Digger’s dead ass corpse?

FBI James is a fucking enigma. Here he is standing up for Gay Rights even though Piper is like “mm maybe I should forgive my abuser??”
BUT. AFTER THIS? WE GET COUNTDOWN WHICH IS JUST. Countdown is. IT’s a problem. James’s personality is IMMEDIATELY HORRIBLY u-turned into “well we need SOMEONE to be the Bad Guy to Piper’s Good!” DESPITE. ALL THESE YEARS OF COMICS.This is the shit you’ll see people who don’t know better or just want a reason to hate the Trickster (despite being 100% okay for them to just say he’s annoying/they don’t like his tights/acrobats are stupid) reference. James is, suddenly, very abruptly, a homophobe. Like an “ew don’t touch me” level homophobe because I’m pretty sure DC snorts cocaine and threw a dart at a board for “how could they make these two fight” and landed on GAY RIGHTS IS TRENDING.
BUTSTILL IN THE FUCKING END OF ALL OF THIS?After so many issues of James being a complete fuckass prick?
Tumblr media
springboards himself from his current job of being railroad face putty to catching bullets to make sure Piper wasn’t gonna die. Without knowing the proceedings of this entire plotline, James out of nowhere after so much gaybashing, still finds it in him to leap into the path of multiple bullets and save Piper. Because, yknow, he’s evil!
Later it’s shown he’s been working to take everyone down (y’know, like when he was in the FBI) and left Piper specific helpful notes to do it himself. Because Evil Bad Guy! Helping his gone-good friend! Take down bad guys!
DC I STILL HAVE SO MANY GODDMAN QUESTOINgsd
But yeah that’s. That’s where we last saw James. in 2007, dead, after saving Piper when he could have easily pulled a Joker and ripped HIM down to take hte bullets and etcetc, y’know. Something a Very Bad Person would’ve done, like the characterization we’ve seen now.
Tumblr media
His ghost (easily argued as Piper’s own mental construction of James sassing him) sasses Hartley to even, in his mental state, saw off James’s hand so Piper doesn’t have to lug his weight around and has a fighting chance at living. And in the end, when Piper’s fighting the thing that can destroy the fucking world, it’s shown only Piper was the one who could save them? Because his flute, and his musical ability, and [enter DC comic science here]. You could argue this was James, once again, somehow knowing the long-con at play here, getting screwed over at EVERY turn, and sacrificing himself so they ‘good’ team had a fighting chance. You could also argue this is me losing my mind trying to make sense of the things they made James do. (my running argument is he was purposely a prick to push Piper away, so he could keep him safe)
Also Piper plays James a Swan Song of Queen as the final boss explodes and he’s fully prepared to die. So like. There’s that.
AND THATS BASICALLY THE COMICS? The main, ‘canon timeline’ comics. I’m missing a LOT of little things here and there, but I’m not missing anything like body counts, or murder attempts, beyond the old Silver Age “Bad guy of the week” things like trying to make Flash’s head explode, or you know. Other “nobody really has a personality, we just have quirks”.

MY NUMBER ONE GUESS TO WHERE THIS NEW PERSONALITY TREND COMES FROM?
Mark Hamil|’s OG run as him in the old live action show. That characterization was fun, for the time, and I even enjoyed it cause it was just that off the wall and you could tell it was what they used to decide he should be the Joker for the BATS Joker. Consider it a prototype (combined with all the previous comic jokers but that’s not for this long ass post)
And if it’d stayed there, that’d be it! That’s it! But then JLU came along, and they referenced the old show for their version of James with a sprinkling of early-era comics, and a lot of people loved and watched that show. That was their version of the Trickster, because it was their first meeting with him! And I can’t fault that! But that guy was clearly off his rocker and I’m sure if the JLU allowed a higher rating, it would’ve been even closer to the old TV show.
And both of THOSE were heavily, heavily referenced for the CW version, which as I’m at this point now means I need to slap my usual anti-CW tag onto things. I hate the CW James. There is so little comic in him it’s almost disgusting, and they ramped up so much of the Joker side of JLU & OGTV he might as well just be the Joker. It’s not a good representation of him at all. I have, also, only seen his first appearance episode, so maybe I’m wrong? But when you fuck up hard on the first run, why would I return for round 2?
So with ALL THIS–
REBOOT TIME. Whatever the newnew remake is calling itself.
At first! With how James was! In the first panel flash of him clearly behind the scenes tugging so many wires and lines, watching everything with a bucket of popcorn while pulling others to his side, sitting pretty in an old museum? warehouse? highlighted in purples and vintage toys, I was like “holy shit this it. This is My Boy, back from the goddamn limbo-dead. It’s him.” But then“taking over the city entirely” to do? What? Turn it into the world’s biggest Trickster themepark? Make everyone wear striped leggings and combat boots? Martial Law of murder if you don’t carry rubber chickens? This is already veering from anything major James has ever done. As it stands I can’t see the gag here. Its’ weirdly dark and edgy, and way too close to something we saw the 90s TV show Trickster do, in the episode where he basically took over the place. The previews show him being what I’m assuming a Judge, Jury, & Executioner joke– and unless this spins into a Clopin song and dance number and his little hand puppet crops up to slam the button on the guillotine, I’m not having it, DC.
They’re trying to tie him back into the CW, despite the writer saying he really enjoyed the Neron-era things with James (if I’m remembering the interview correctly). And it’s also why you may see me constantly saying “Well I sure as fuck hope Neron shows up” at anything new that’s released, to explain away all of… this.
This isn’t him. If they wanted a murderous Trickster, they should’ve just used Axel. The kid, canonly, tied explosives to stray dogs and homeless people. AXEL is the not-good Trickster, the murderous Trickster, the one you aren’t suppose to feel sorry for beyond being in way over his head due to his young age.

i think I somehow didn’t answer your question
TL;DR
it sucks? it’s also great because there’s a .5% chance that maybe they’ll do it right and won’t reference the fucking 90s noncomic media. But then they do. And all I can do is laugh and shrug like ‘welp I expected nothing’. But when they get it RIGHT it’s like christmas came early.
