Mark Anthony Peter Phillips CVO ADC OLY (born 22 September 1948) is an English Olympic gold medal-winning horseman for Great Britain and the first husband of Anne, Princess Royal, with whom he has two children. He remains a leading figure in British equestrian circles, a noted eventing course designer, and a columnist for Horse & Hound magazine. He also remains a leading figure in British equestrian circles and serves as Chef d'Equipe of the United States Eventing Team.

Phillips was educated at Stouts Hill Preparatory School near Uley, Gloucestershire, then at Marlborough College, then the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards in July 1969, retiring at the rank of captain in 1978. Alongside his military career, Phillips became a champion equestrian. He continued to style himself Captain Mark Phillips, as it is usual for retired cavalry captains to keep using their rank if their civilian job involves working with horses in racing or equestrian sports.

Twice married, Phillips first married Princess Anne on 14 November 1973, together they have two children. They separated in 1989 and, eventually, divorced in 1992 after years of marital strain with reported affairs by both. These problems came to light and entered the public eye when Phillips fathered a love child in 1985. In 1997, Phillips married an American Olympic dressage rider, divorcing in 2012 due to Mark's infidelity, together they had a daughter. Now it looks like he's banging another American equestrian. Damn… I need to get into horses so he could get into me.

Born on November 15th 1977, Peter Mark Andrew Phillips is the only son of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips and the eldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip. At the time of his birth during the reign of his maternal grandmother Elizabeth II, he was 5th in the line of succession to the British throne; as of 2024, he is 18th.

In 2003, Phillips met Canadian Autumn Kelly at the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Their engagement was announced on 28 July 2007. They married on 17 May 2008 at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle and divorced in 2021.

They had two children: Savannah Anne Kathleen (13) and Isla Elizabeth (12).

'Try to make the best of it' was what he counselled each of his three elder children to do when their marriages began to falter. As you will discover in Chapter 12, in his practical, pragmatic way he made heroic attempts to help Charles and Diana as their marriage failed. 'I did my best,' he told me. 'We did our best.'

'Did they do their best?' I asked.

'Anne did her best,' he said. When Princess Anne's first marriage foundered, the Queen and Prince Philip were saddened, of course, but as the Duke put it to me 'What can you do? It isn't easy. She tried to make it work. She really did.' A few years later, when Anne had remerried, the Duke told me that she and her new husband were having a 'rocky patch - you're married, you know how it is?'

'I do,' I said.

'I don't know how to help,' he said. He shook his head. He made no attempt to hide his distress and concern. It clearly weighed on him quite heavily. It must have done because this conversation was taking place in public: at a charity fund-raising lunch in the Cabinet War Rooms. We had only just taken our places: food was being served. I was seated one place away from the Duke. He turned to the middle-aged woman who was seated between us. 'As a rule, I try to keep out of these things' he explained.

'But you want to help', said the woman, who had married children of her own.

'Yes,' said the Duke, contemplating his starter, 'but I don't know what to say - except, 'Keep going, it will work out. With good will on both sides, it usually does.' He sighed. 'Children.'
