Let me start plainly: Hades is one of the most successful modern engagements with Greek mythology in recent memory. It is not perfect, but it is a rare case of adaptation that respects the source material enough not to strip it of its teeth, while still translating it into something emotionally rich, narratively satisfying, and artistically alive.
At its core, Hades is a roguelike video game centered on Zagreus, a relatively obscure figure in the ancient Greek canon—son of Hades in Orphic tradition, though even that is debated. The game follows his repeated attempts to escape the Underworld and reach the surface, all while uncovering layers of family history and divine politics. It’s a bold narrative move, not least because Zagreus barely appears in classical myth. That Supergiant chose him at all is telling: it freed them from the burden of expectations while allowing them to root their story in less mainstream corners of myth.
But where Hades excels is in how it understands the structure and tone of Greek mythology. The game is cyclical, repetitive, and ever-unfolding, just like the myths. You die, and die again, and die again, but every time you return, the story continues. The Underworld is not merely a backdrop; it’s a mechanism. You’re meant to fail, because failure in myth is often how knowledge is gained. Orpheus fails. Sisyphus fails. Theseus fails. The tragedy is baked into the form. Hades gets this. It plays with it.
The game’s cast of characters is also remarkable. The Olympians are charming, vain, powerful, and inconsistent. Their dialogue is often contradictory, their favors fickle, their personalities theatrical but pointed. Dionysus is both kind and careless. Aphrodite is sultry but casually cruel. Zeus is authoritative and aloof, charming until the moment he isn't. These are not modern humans in togas. They feel like gods—larger than life, emotionally opaque, and delightfully unreliable. Even Hades himself is written with a gravitas that mirrors his mythic portrayal: stern, cold, not unkind, but certainly not approachable.
Hades does not fall into the trap of moralizing every story beat. It doesn't feel the need to make its gods into metaphors for trauma or bad parenting, though it edges close. Hades and Persephone’s relationship, for instance, is reimagined in a way that moves away from the abduction narrative, presenting them instead as estranged lovers separated by mutual regret. It’s a softened interpretation, but not an unreasonable one. It doesn’t erase the violence of the myth; it reframes it into a question of agency, which is a welcome nuance in a landscape where most retellings sanitize entirely or vilify without care.
There is real strength in how Hades handles its characters' dignity. Achilles is allowed to be a mentor and not a tragic object. Patroclus is written with reserve and quiet depth. Their story is not The Song of Achilles, and it’s better for it. It’s less about grief, more about the slow work of healing over eternity. Even characters like Thanatos, often miscast in modern media as a villain or shadowy death-dealer, are given room to exist with complexity and restraint. The game doesn’t try to flatten mythic figures into tropes. It lets them be, and that, in itself, is a form of respect.
However, it is not without flaws. The game's tone can sometimes slide into quippy modernity. Zagreus’ voice acting often leans into a sarcastic, overly casual register that undercuts the weight of the world he's in. His interactions with characters like Megaera or Theseus occasionally veer into the territory of sitcom banter, which feels out of place in an otherwise richly atmospheric narrative.
And though Hades draws on deep cuts of myth, it rarely engages directly with the ritual or religious dimensions of those stories. The gods are characters, not forces. There's very little engagement with fate, miasma, or the sacred. For a game that deals with death and the afterlife, it is surprisingly secular. This is understandable—it is, after all, a game designed to be played and replayed—but it limits the scope of what Greek myth can be. What we are left with is a pantheon of personalities, but not quite a pantheon of powers.
Still, what Hades accomplishes is significant. It is a modern myth that feels alive, not in the sense of being relatable, but in the sense of being dynamic. It understands that mythology is not about neat arcs or moral lessons. It is about repetition, inheritance, contradiction, and resistance. It is about descent, and what it costs to ascend.
For that alone, Hades deserves its place among the rare few retellings that do not diminish their source material in the name of accessibility. It offers myth as a world to inhabit, not a story to consume.

The citadel dlc is so good and fun and perfect except for the fact that it’s living out my good friend kaidans worst nightmare in real life. Like. Imagine you’re in love with a guy and you don’t say anything and then he goes and dies. He gets himself sucked into the vacuum of space bc he has to be the hero. And that’s fine bc that’s part of why you love him but it still means he’s fucking dead. And then 2 years later you see him again but it can’t be him bc he died and he’s working with the enemy and clearly this must be some kind of weird show of power by cerberus bc he can’t be back and if he was he would have told me and he wouldn’t be with these people. So when he begs you to come with him you have to say no even though losing him the first time was like losing a limb. Even though you would have followed him anywhere bc this can’t be him it just can’t. And then time passes and you realize it was really him and more time passes you tell him you love him and more time passes and you’re happy together and then you see the real version of what you thought you were seeing on Horizon. You’re seeing the shell of the man that you love and he’s trying to kill you and you don’t know how you could have ever thought your Shepard was like this bc seeing it in real life is a million times worse. And then you have to watch him kill himself.

Ask the ghosts if honor matters by @rifle-yes (a rebelcaptain mass effect au)
He never seems to understand that the weight he keeps trying to carry is going to crush them both, because that's what happens to people who try to be heroes. Jyn knows better than most.

I actually really love my modern au and I want to yap about it . It involves lamb and narinder getting frozen in an iceberg avatar style and awakening years later , to a technologically modern setting equivalent of our modern times. Magic and the occult isn't practiced and pretty much serves no cultural or socioeconomical purpose. Narinder and Lamb are faced with creating a cult in a hyper survilanced and fast era, and they realize in order to do that they have to adapt to the ways of this new cultural landscape. Devotion can still be harvested by other means.
Their new promising investment to building a following? Becoming an internet influencer.

humans: our homeworld was suddenly invaded by the reapers and we lost our parliament and colonies in the blink of an eye. we're desperate for help but no one wants to give it to us.
batarians: we were the first to get hit by the reapers, shepard literally nuked one of our systems and 300k people in it, and it's very possible that we're headed towards extinction as a species if we survive this war.
turians: our military is being obliterated no matter how hard we try and palaven is burning. we don't know if our society will ever recover.
krogan: all of our hope relies on curing the thing that's slowly but surely killing us both culturally and literally, or otherwise, we're doomed.
quarians: we started a war with the geth and if we don't win it, we really fucked up and will probably die without ever seeing our homeworld.
asari: our homeworld crumbled in front of our own eyes and we're facing huge diplomatic fallout once the war ends.

I think it would be really funny if rin was the more helpful one around his house. Like u would think rin would be the disrespectful one who always bails on housework or mass but its actually yukio who would always have an excuse not to go or forget about chores to the point that rin just does them instinctively now
#this post lagged my phone so bad i had to save it as a draft and switch it to my computer#god is trying to stop me from spreading my 'yukio is an atheist' ideals#anyway this extends to when they live together and when they are adults to the point that rin comes over and does all the chores for yukio#cuz this created an oroboros since rin always did them as a kid now yukio doesnt have them in his brain#he tries his best tho he would neveradmit (at least in highschool) that hes kind of a boyfailure at housework#rin is a homemaker this is my truth#rin is like kinda resentful but not enough to act on it and its so deep down he doesnt even realize its there#like yeah its kinda fucked up that he would ask yukio for help setting things up for mass or doing the laundry but yukio has a busy scedule#and hes wayy smarter than rin so obviously he shouldnt waste his time on stuff like that but rin would never voice those in a negative way#rin doesnt hate helping his brother tho if yukio asked him to come over and clean his house everyday forever he would probably do it#its just the principal of yukio being a perfect angel and rin not getting any credit cuz hes doing 'thankless jobs'#and yukio kinda feels bad even tho he really did have things to do he just couldnt tell rin cuz it was exorcist work#im just writing fanfiction now#accept my okumura twin fanfiction headcanons#blue exorcist#ao no exorcist#yukio okumura#rin okumura#'blue exorcist' 'ao no exorcist' yukio okumura' 'rin okumura' are my most used tags on tumblr#am i in your hearts yet blue exorcist tumbr?🥺

The Decline of Greek Mythology in Media: A Rant
Let’s be clear: Greek mythology is not a pastel aesthetic or an easy-access feel-good story. It’s raw, monstrous, and morally jagged. But what we’ve got now? A parade of half-baked adaptations that boil gods into caricatures, sweat equity personality tests, or slick TikTok optics. And before someone whines about me hating queer representations or modern retellings in general—no, I don’t. I just want them to respect the source.
Take Lore Olympus (no, i will never be over it. let me be), which feels like Greek myth meets Pinterest board meets teenage whimsy. Artemis is a quirky hunter-influencer. Hades is painted into dim emo colors. Zeus, once a world-changing king, is reduced to hipster dad-tier jokes. Everything brimmed with potential gets outsourced to merch kits and pastel edits.
Then there’s Netflix’s Kaos, which at least tries a gritty modern premise. But even there, critics—like Claire Bushey and Josh Spero—call it “soulless” and “ambient Marvel-like,” plugged with surface-level symbolism that forgets the primal terror and scale of these gods. It’s window dressing, not transformation.
Now, Percy Jackson is a bit of a different beast. And I’ll say this straight: I’m not saying it’s bad. Far from it. The series—both books and screen adaptations—has heart. It gets kids reading. It makes myth accessible. But it also renders Greek mythology easily digestible. Gods become side characters to prop up a hero’s journey that is more about adolescent discovery than cosmic fear. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. It’s a fine adaptation. It just doesn’t show Greek myth in its truest form—as myth. It shows it as a metaphor for growing up. And that’s valid. But it’s not terrifying. It’s not divine. And that’s a tradeoff that needs to be acknowledged, not ignored.
Now—here’s the twist—I’ll give credit where it’s due: Epic: The Musical. It fundamentally respects the myth while amplifying emotion, rhythm, blood, and yes—monster rage. This isn’t trite dabbling—it feels like The Odyssey in song. Songs like “Ruthlessness” and “Get in the Water” capture godlike fear and moral weight. Jorge Rivera-Herrans doesn’t sanitize Odysseus; he puts his grimness on a stage, with full awareness that heroes can be monstrous and gods can be psychopathic.
Yes yes, Epic makes changes—Polites dies earlier, Poseidon physically confronts Odysseus, Circe doesn’t sleep with him, and the whole vengeance saga 600 strike deal—but these adaptations serve the themes, not undermine them. Sure, some fans complain it’s too hypermodern or American, but they still admit it sparks genuine interest in myth. That, to me, is myth done right.
So where’s the problem?
1. Flattened gods. Artemis as witchy girlboss, Hades as gloomy emo, where is the chaos, the awe, the sense of terror and obligation the original myths demanded?
2. Comfort-first storytelling. No one wants to feel unsettled anymore—did Medea ever get comfy on a 2025 Netflix trailer? Didn’t think so.
3. Surface symbolism. The story of the gods is about scales bigger than economics or influencer culture. Tonal aesthetics don’t cut it.
So here are real myth needs:
Ambiguity. Gods who are heroes and monsters, good and terrible.
Violence & consequence. Let Hera rage. Let Ares erratically wreak havoc. Let justice be uneven and horrifying.
Wrong turns. Teach us that myth is a reflection of collective unknowns—not a pep talk, but a challenge.
So yes, if your retelling has Hermes working a drive-thru, I’m rolling my eyes. But if your musical lets Zeus shatter crews with thunder, or Artemis cull deer in the woods with ancient fury, you might be on the right track.
Give me back the terror. The wonder. The dread. Because that is Greek mythology’s heartbeat. Anything less is just noise.

ROLLIN'
Crumbling with the setting sun To the drowned palm of my hand Anywhere I go, anywhere I turn I'm falling into the darkness With the fear of regurgitating Writhing in my head Screaming until I rot away The now in which I struggle An endless future, into the darkness I'm writhing as I fall Even if the answer is going to fade away Please don't change Even as our love moves
Crumbling with the setting sun To the drowned palm of my hand Falling falling endlessly Deep down into that darkness A petition that a voice threw up Go forward with a cluster of ringing sounds Frenzy approaching, the hour draws near The now in which I struggle An endless future, into the darkness Struggling to cross over Even if the answer means nothing Please don't change Even as our love moves I'm writhing as I fall Even if the answer is going to fade away Please don't change Even through the snarling A petition that a voice threw up Go forward with a cluster of ringing sounds Frenzy approaching, reunion is here.

NOX
Chased by silence The drowning answers are always beautiful What is left behind Lamenting over the all too familiar demons I spit up the choking beat in my throat And open my bloodshot eyes wide I won't hesitate anymore, I'll wrench them open Swaying, swaying The answer is flowering Words that can't be shaken right now Let me beautifully drag out an answer The smirk of greed, warped by insatiability Is always shattered somewhere. And those left behind Lamenting over the all too familiar demons And brooding Right now, moving towards a changing light
I spit up the choking beat in my throat And open my bloodshot eyes wide I won't hesitate anymore, I'll wrench them open Swaying, swaying The answer is flowering Words that can't be shaken right now Let me beautifully drag out an answer Now is the time to turn it into conviction The target is impossible to miss, take all of this! Devour everything until sorrow is eliminated. The unquenchable flame rises. Feelings that can't be put into words Embrace the answer within you. The colour of never giving up I spit up the choking beat in my throat And open my bloodshot eyes wide I won't hesitate anymore

HOLD
I screamed in agony Our love is seeping out Before it overflowed I slammed it shut Break only what can be broken Even though this love has been sewn together I can't let go of you I don't need anyone to understand this Even when I throw it all away let me hold you like crazy A disturbance that has really horrified you (Try) So sore that you are entangled (Try) Crawling, even when blood is oozing out (Try) I can't shred this love (Try) To the point of disorder and turmoil (Try) So sore that you are entangled (Try) Crawling, even when blood is oozing out (Try) I can't shred this love Even if I have to hang it all on the promise Of swallowing a thousand needles Even when I throw it all away let me hold you like crazy A disturbance that has really horrified you (Try) So sore that you are entangled (Try) Crawling, even when blood is oozing out (Try) I can't shred this love (Try) To the point of disorder and turmoil (Try) So sore that you are entangled (Try) Crawling, even when blood is oozing out (Try) I can't shred this love

濁 (Daku)
Overflowing thoughts Put into words that grate and disturb Can't be taken back Even now, intermittently The distorted truth Sinks to the level of junk Stuffed intentions A vision of the ideal Falls down in time A bleeding darkness The sadness can be traced out In the voice I spit out as it crumbles In the slanted sound image, Is the meaning of being broken Remorse gnaws me I started to fly with those dirty wings I saw a nightmare of all my sins The distorted truth Sinks to the level of junk Stuffed intentions A vision of the ideal Falls down in time A bleeding darkness The sadness can be traced out In the voice I spit out as it crumbles I want the broken meaning of the sights and sounds I leant on To hold me The voice I force out at your closed eyes Gets the sorrow to reach it's breaking point Love for the meaning entwined in chaos Is bound to my remorseful conscience.

THE PALE
So far away a freshness in the air A painted ideal. Unaddressed. So far away a freshness in the air A painted ideal. Unaddressed. If even this broken body can forgive me It will rot away.
Dim the shadow that creaks with sadness And fades away from my heart. And brings the dawn. So far away a freshness in the air A painted ideal. Unaddressed. If even this broken body can forgive me It will rot away. Dim the shadow that creaks with sadness And fades away from my heart. The spinning night grows pale, As I embrace the meaning I’ve been looking for. Even broken sadness melts out of me, Somewhere it will rot away. Dim the shadow that creaks with sadness And fades away from my heart. How much will the burnt out past Scorch the soul? It even burns out in my heart. At dawn So far So far away. A freshness in the air A painted ideal. Unaddressed.

BARBARIAN
The greed I played with Sloppy and bleeding Scattered entertainment, greedy vindication A superb view of the emotional corruption Get over the madness of the number play Does that fake smile of yours Hide a subservience behind it? When you slay the scornfully smiling melancholy, Will you scratch it away to find it's true nature underneath? Scattered entertainment, greedy vindication A superb view of the emotional corruption Get over the madness of the number play The voices that fly around Scatter with a glare as I knew they would. The hate of shapeless greed Was suspended upside down A fading thin smile fluctuates through the day Making these eyes waver Towards where the howling of darkness echoes The dreams contradicting each other The voices unable to protect Distortion brings the darkness When you slay the scornfully smiling melancholy, Will you scratch it away to find it's true nature underneath? Scattered entertainment, greedy vindication A superb view of the emotional corruption Get over the madness of the number play Dreams that are fading. You are fragile They don't fade away. So much so that they are stacking up The hate of shapeless greed Was suspended upside down And the fading thin smile Seems like madness Where in the darkness will you fall down so lonely?

FRENZY
Shake off the feelings Reject the body which has been cut off somewhere An abandoned heart Bursts forth and pushes your resisting voice Don't forget that killing Ah, should we abandon The unnecessary anguish? Silence is a powerful blade Noise that I throw up and throw away It has not reduced in my sloppy mouth It sounds as good as the sky. What a waste Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy corruption With depravity Reject the body which has been cut off somewhere An abandoned heart Bursts forth and pushes your resisting voice Don't forget that killing Oh flapping wings All this unnecessary distress I just don't have any time to be tied up like this The noise I manage to spit out and cast away My impudence slowly tumbles out I don't care if I'm the only one it pierces Neither you nor I are as sweet as we are often perceived I'll lead you there, shall we run together?

LAST SONG
The answers that stack up over time Sing the connected nights, As if my heart is screaming I want to reclaim the lost time Come back to the light A future so dazzling, tearing through the noise Unforgettable memories shake my body In the midst of despair I saw a dream That's right, a wandering voice Once more, withered, like that day How far will the future burn Show me a wandering voice, right here Shout, like that day, once more Really wish for the answer The answers that stack up over time Sing the connected nights, As if my heart is screaming I want to reclaim the lost time Come back to the light A future so dazzling, tearing through the noise Unforgettable memories shake my body In the midst of despair I saw a dream That's right, a wandering voice Once more, withered, like that day How far will the future burn Show me a wandering voice, right here Shout, like that day, once more Really wish for the answer For hope And now that you've you taught me All the reasons for me to live That's right, a wandering voice Once more withered, like that day How far will the future burn Show me a wandering voice, right here Let the unchanging vow of this song Resonate endlessly Until the end That wandering voice, right here Shout like that day once more Really wish for the answer Wish ...

Notes: So I made this post with the intention to point out that all those text pages are lyrics translations, so they are prioritized (and in bold font) but I also used some of the translations from MASS normal edition lyrics booklet as well as other alternative translations. A big pain for me was that the booklet and Limited Edition book translations do not match and sometimes even have very different meanings even though they are both supposed to be official translations, also they both occasionally look like they were done with google translate... Blinding Hope is not included because I was at 30/30 images already and it's translations can easily be found everywhere. I am sorry about the formatting, Tumblr kept removing bold from random letters or words (I guess it hates entire paragraphs being bold?), I know it makes the post messy but idk how to fix it. A big thanks to the archive keeper @rad-is-more for all the scans.
