Physicists model how amorphous solids lose their stability

Why do avalanches start to slide? And what happens inside the "pile of snow?" If you ask yourself these questions, you are very close to a physical problem. This phenomenon not only occurs on mountain peaks and in snow masses, where it is rather uncontrolled—it is also studied in the laboratory at the microscopic level in materials with a disordered particle structure, for example in glasses, granular materials or foams. Particles can "slide" in a similar way to avalanches, causing the structure to lose its stability and become deformable, even independently of a change in temperature. But what happens inside such a shaky structure? Physicist Matthias Fuchs from the University of Konstanz and his colleagues Florian Vogel and Philipp Baumgärtel are researching these disordered solids. Two years ago, they solved an old puzzle about glass vibrations by revisiting a forgotten theory. "Now we have continued the project to answer the question of when an 'irregular house of cards collapses.' We want to find out when an amorphous solid loses its stability and starts to slide like a pile of sand," says Fuchs.

At the time of this writing, Oppenheimer has made $788,186,568 at the worldwide box office and is expected to cross $800,000,000 soon.

It's likely Oppenheimer will remain in the number two spot when it comes to the Rated R box office rankings. The highest-grossing movie on the list is Joker, which earned $1,066,208,658 when it was released in 2019. Christopher Nolan's biopic has a long way to go before beating Todd Phillips' DC film, but Oppenheimer has already exceeded expectations in every way.

“Reportedly, when the first movie to use rock music in its soundtrack, Blackboard Jungle (1955), appeared in theaters it caused riots. It's fun to think about a world where the cliche sheltered youth of the 1950s just got so fucking pumped by the Bill Haley track “Rock Around the Clock” that they lost their shit, started tearing up seats, fucking each other and burning stuff. I have a feeling those reports are a little embellished, brought on by some kind of Footloose (1984) style fear of kids dancing, but there is definitely something to the notion that rhythmic sound has a drastic effect on the human animal. I don't mean this in that Tipper Gore, PMRC bullshit kind of way, more just the basic fact that sound patterns do have powerful and visible effects on the brain. I can easily see the changes myself, on my mood, speed, and even attention,based on the type of music I'm listening to. Various points have been made as to the correlations with performance during mental and physical activities, and I’m sure science will only add to that over time, that is if it's not already some kind of secret government weapon. Stores, commercials and casinos use sounds (along with colors,lights etc) to make you act a certain way , they pour a fuck ton of money into research along these lines. It's a vast, interesting and relevant concept, and when pushed to the extreme makes for a entertaining one. So I'm sure more flicks then I can recall have used it as a plot device on film, but it would be hard for any of them to be as bonkers as Decoder (1984)...”- RevTerry

Science Saturday: Gerard’s Herball

Among our favorite books in the collection is the 1597 first edition of English herbalist and gardener John Gerard’s The Herball, or, Generall Historie of Plantes, published in London by the Queen's Printer John Norton. Besides its important place in the popular British understanding of plants, we are also impressed by its folio-sized, 1,484-page heft and its hundreds of delightful woodcut illustrations.

Gerard himself was not a botanical scholar. He was, rather, a high-ranking barber-surgeon, and as such maintained a strong interest in herbalism, supervising significant gardens, and becoming internationally recognized as a dedicated horticultural enthusiast. Despite his lack of scholarship, he is considered one of the founders of botany in the English language, and was among the earliest Renaissance natural historians, relying on empirical evidence rather than ancient authority, following in the line of such botanists as Leonard Fuchs and Gerard’s fellow plant enthusiast Matthias de l'Obel.

Gerard had already gained some notoriety with his earlier 1596 Catalogus arborum, fruticum, ac plantarum, a catalog of 1,039 rare plants he cultivated in his garden at Holborn, and it was the printer John Norton who approached Gerard with the idea of producing an English version of Flemish botanist Rembert Dodoens’s popular herbal, Stirpium historiae pemptades sex published in 1583, which was itself a Latin version of an earlier Flemish work by Dodoens, the Cruydeboeck published in 1554. Earlier work on a popular English-style herbal (Dodoens’s herb book had already been translated into English in 1578) had been attempted by English botanist Robert Priest before he died in 1596 and Gerard has been accused of plagiarizing Priest as well as Gerard’s contemporary l’Obel. 

This may or may not be true, but what is true is that only 16 of the approximately 1,800 woodcuts used in the Herball are original. Norton rented the majority of the woodblocks from the Frankfurt woodcutter and printer Nicolaus Bassaeus, which had already been used in several other previously published botanical publications. Despite its derivative nature, Gerard’s Herball remained a popular, standard English reference source for well over a century, with revised and updated editions produced in 1633 and 1636.

Now I am very curious: which is the best ending of the entire series?

Oh, that's easy especially because my answer's a rather predictable one that hasn't changed in over a decade (probably also because I haven't touched any new releases in years): Toteninsel. The adaptation only; the novel ends on a different tone and doesn't fly as hard, with Jelena calling Bob 'Süßer' (much to my liking) and concluding what has been the book's running joke by handing the trio a set of newly designed business cards. While I appreciate episodes that end on a funny (if well executed) and/or wholesome note, I tend to prefer the ones that go against the grain (see: Pistenteufel where Nevis fades out with them arguing and yelling at each other about some silly stuff). What I love most though, and what tends to stick with me the longest -- not only with ddf but in general -- are endings that are either bittersweet or melancholic. What do you know, I'm a sad girl and the heart wants what the heart wants.

Labyrinth der Götter, while bittersweet, leans more towards the melodramatic and shocking side -- which I personally love and think is very fitting or the Old Hollywood theme that runs through the entire episode. But Toteninsel... pure melancholy, and it displays such a... grown-up notion.

Die Journalisten traten neugierig auf die drei Detektive zu. Innerhalb weniger Augenblicke hatte sich eine dichte Traube um sie gebildet. Justus blickte über die Menge hinweg -- sechs völlig unauffällig wirkende Menschen bewegten sich langsam aus dem Gedränge hinaus, auf den Flughafenausgang zu. Niemand außer Justus achtete auf sie. Kurz bevor sie außer Sichtweite waren, drehten sich alle noch einmal um. Doktor Svensson hob kurz die Hand und lächelte. Dann verschwand sie im Gedränge der Menschen.

Pitch perfect way to bid farewell to a bunch of ragtag and somewhat shifty scientists with whom you've just been to hell and back and who won't end up in jail because you're covering for them so they can make a beeline for the exit. Svensson being the one to turn around, briefly, does something to me because she might or might not be one of my favorite guest characters and it's also a fitting conclusion for her mini arc. The sound mixing is great, alas a lil bit of music while you can hear the journalists lining up and going wild, the cameras clicking in the background. But the one who carries it all is Matthias Fuchs who always had the unparalleled gift to give so much weight to even the simplest of sentences.

Natürlich ist diese Liste nicht vollständig. Sicherlich könnte ich sie um viele Persönlichkeiten erweitern. Besonders bei Künstlern, Schriftstellern, Musikern und Schauspielern kämen sicherlich noch viel mehr bewundernswerte Menschen zusammen, die mein Leben mitbegleitet haben. Menschen, die ich zum Beispiel während meiner Zeit als Redakteur oder anderwärtig persönlich kennen gelernt habe, sind zum Beispiel auf der Tumblr-Seite fett gekennzeichnet. Unter der Rubrik (Vormärz) versteht man die frühen Akteure der Demokratiebewegung, die leider nicht zum Zug kamen und stattdessen einem autokratischen System weichen mussten, die als Pseudodemokratie bis heute anhält. Im Klartext: Deutschland verträgt keine echte Opposition.
