“Heroes at Dawn”
by Orphaned_Account
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a Jordie lives au where they both stick together in Ketterdam after the plague. Jordie takes on the role of Dirtyhands and sends kaz to university to study.
What fascinated me the most is Jordie and Kaz’s view of their PTSD, where Dirthands Kaz saw it as a weakness, something that must be hidden, a deep shame. And Dirtyhands jordie ignored its presence, unintentionally triggering episodes by running recklessly headfirst, and not even thinking twice before diving into the water… his fears always took a back seat for the job, his crew, or his family. (Kaz would do this too, but it was always a last resort. Jordie seemed to make it a weekend out of it)
Amazing read!!!

In contrary to popular belief, I actually really love the small filler moments between the Crows, in which they are all sitting and just talking to each other. Discussing things, planning things. Because these are the moments that show how human they are, how they are just like you and me. We see them debating. We see them joking around with each other as well every now and then. We see them slumping against a chair, drawing circles on the table with their finger, mussing their disheveled hair and drinking coffee. When they aren't being dangerous crime lords getting involved in some intense action, but just people. Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom prove that filler moments aren't always boring when the characters involved are highly intriguing and their shared dialogue is also a joy to read. It's why I really cherished that one scene in the show during the second episode of the second season, when Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Nina and Wylan were all seated at a table in that breakfast shop and just talking about things. It meant a lot to me and I wanted more of them.

Reading the Six of Crow's duology is funny because I sometimes forget that they are criminals until they do something like kidnap Van Eck's pregnant wife to get Inej back😂
Then I'm reminded that these bitches are the definition of "you go low, I go lower." and I love that for them

I know the Shadow and Bone series got cancelled but can we just please get a movie/series about only Six of Crows? Same actors, because they are amazing. But let’s just forget the Shadow and Bone series and just go with Six of Crows. We need the ice court heist!

But!!! Making a story after the canon events in the books requires planning- and setting, and plot-! And i do not have the creative talent for such things
however!! Let me present these!!
Tumblr media
Idea 1 - Matthias doesn’t get to die
Jordie is currently studying medicine at Ketterdam University during the events of Crooked Kingdom and like any sensible civilian he ran like hell when the plague bells chimed
he paused in an alley to hide away from the crowd and over hears an altercation between what seems to be a deserter and a druskelle
After a small moral debate he decided that he’s not just going to pretend like he doesn’t see the shot man dying on the cobblestones, and moves to help
Tumblr media
Idea 2 - Can’t a guy just mourn in peace?
jordie was visiting Black Vail, sitting on the bench dedicated to the souls that were not buried, sharing a hot chocolate with a ghost (you know, mourning, as you do)
when this panicked, loudly dressed, gangly man asked if he was a doctor- without an an excuse ready to NOT follow the stranger, jordie finds himself tasked with delivering a child
and kaz sees the consequences of kidnapping a heavily pregnant woman

Kaz: This job will require a bit of muscle, so I thought Inej could do it.
Matthias: What? No! I should do it! I'm a man!
Nina: That's debatable.
Matthias: Well I'm more of a man than Inej!
Inej: I don't accept that.

So I have been minorly skimming some stuff on YouTube and TikTok about SOC, and I cannot believe some of the things that people say about Kaz and the Crows.
One point I tend to hear from Six of Crows critiques a lot is "The Crows act older than their supposed age, especially Kaz"
And... Seriously? Did we read the same book? The Crows are constantly making jokes and bickering. Do you think people who are in their 30's or even their late 20's would say shit like "jogs the liver" or "I need a cup of the darkest bitterest coffee or a real punch to the jaw" or "my ghost won't associate with your ghost" or "a hive of bees in your dresser drawer"? THEY WOULDN'T. (Actually, they can, but maybe not every single sentence and not as impulsively) These are things only dramatic teenagers would say. Not to mention the way the Crows handle their traumas is extremely immature and they're awful at communicating. The Crows actually act more like teenagers than 90% of teenagers in YA novels. The only reason why they seem older is because they have skills.
Another point I tend to hear a lot from critiques is "Kaz never faces consequences and he always wins and he's perfect"
What!!???? Just what!!?? In what universe? Once again, did these people read the same book as us?? Kaz is always facing terrible consequences. He is on the edge of losing his own crew every other chapter. His own crew is not afraid to call him out on his shit when he does it. The trauma he has doesn't glorify him, it makes him look pathetic and weak next to the other Crows. Kaz himself is deeply ashamed of it and he's lonely and isolated because of it. He is restricted from hugging his crewmates, he is restricted from kissing Inej and that kills him. He is broken and miserable because of it. But simultaneously, the trauma is his problem to fix. Nobody fixes it for him.
And yes, Kaz is highly intelligent and incredibly skilled and strong, but trust me, he does not always win, and he isn't perfect. If I remember correctly, his first plan for the Ice Court was a failure and they had to improvise from there. But the final plan came at a cost, and that was Nina using parem. Towards the end of the book, Kaz was wrong about predicting that Van Eck actually loved Wylan enough to not kill him, and it cost him everything. The first plan he made to take down Van Eck in the middle of CK was a complete disaster. The crew ended up stuck in the Geldrenner hotel. Kaz was clearly dangling so far off the point of utter insanity that he actually resorted to giving himself up for the crew and only resigned because the other Crows stopped him. And for the final plan of the book, Kaz ended up using every single resource he had left, which once again, subtly implies how desperate he was. He gave up all his assets, he used his old home, he used his original surname, he injured himself a lot in order to recruit more people for the plan. It took him a great deal of time, effort, and thinking to finally put together a plan. AND EVEN THEN, it came at a terrible cost which was the life of one of his Crows.
Even the revenge he took against Pekka wasn't that worth it as Pekka still couldn't remember Jordie's name, Jordie was still dead, and Kaz's trauma and pain didn't get any better than it was before.
Kaz is not at all a perfect guy who always wins. He is deeply flawed, twisted and is always losing something even when he wins a bit. I don't understand how some of these SoC critiques didn't understand this.

Inej: I have a question.
Nina: Shoot.
Inej: Is the S or C in scent silent?
Matthias: Fuck you, I’m going to be thinking about this all day.
Nina: Okay well, cent is pronounced the same way as scent so I’m gonna say the S is silent.
Inej: Okay, but sent is also spelled the same way.
Matthias: Google says that the C was added in the late seventeenth century, so I guess the S is silent.
Jesper: Plot twist, both the S and the C are silent and the E actually makes the sss sound.
Matthias: Jesper is not allowed to talk anymore.

The crows in an orchestra!!
I play cello, and it only made sense to combine my greatest loves.
Jesper: Jesper is a bass. Most of the basses I've met have had a kind of obnoxious energy. They are nice but incredibly annoying. It feels right for Jesper. He was also the easiest to come up with. He's licked his rosin before because he wanted to see how it tasted.
Wylan: He's a violinist and an overachiever. He learns the music perfectly and upstages everyone. He always gets first chair. He practices 30 hours a day.
Inej: She's a viola! They usually aren't seen as the most important but the second they mess up it throws everyone off. Think what could have happened in th ice court heist if Inej didn't make it up that incinerator. She could never mess up, she's too perfect.
Nina: CELLIST. She's big and loud and way too much- which is exactly what most cellos are, in music at least. Someone called her instrument a guitar once and she threatened to bash them in the head with it. She's always salty that she doesn't get the melody (me too 😭)
Kaz: He plays both Violin and Cello. He takes ridiculously good care of his instruments. Once someone tried to grab his bow without asking and he stabbed them. He plays cello very aggressively, and he is a fan of deep, dramatic melodies. I can picture him playing winter by Vivaldi.
Mattias: He's the only one I couldn't see being an orchestra kid. I think he joined Choir. Nina despises him for this decision, but all of the choir kids are just happy to have someone with a deep voice.
