It goes by many names: “The Crisis,” “The Dark Years,” “The Walking Plague,” as well as newer and more “hip” titles such as “World War Z” or “Z War One.” I personally dislike this last moniker as it implies an inevitable “Z War Two.” For me, it will always be “The Zombie War,” and while many may protest the scientific accuracy of the word zombie, they will be hard-pressed to discover a more globally accepted term for the creatures that almost caused our extinction.

I've thought about the contradictions between Abstinence Camp and NPMD a lot, specifically with Pete, and I think I kind of love them??? I don't know how intentional this was, and I honestly don't care, but think about it- Pete is confident in himself and his ability, but he struggles with the difference between how he sees himself vs how others see him. He's got some identity issues, that's normal, but they don't show up at all in Abstinence Camp, there's not even a hint of trepidation in his friendship with Steph. The only time he even mentions being a loser is when he thinks it might negatively affect Steph's reputation, but that's concern for her, not himself.

The main thing that got me was the motivation change with his outfit. In Abstinence Camp he says that he wears the classic nerd look on the advice of his cool older brother, committing to an aesthetic. In NPMD he says that the outfit is specifically designed to prevent as much harassment as possible. Those two things didn't really click in my head until the thought popped up- what if he's just lying? Camp Idontwannabang has a strict social hierarchy for sure, but it's one that Pete doesn't have any reason to care about. You show up for the summer, you do the dumb activities, you have a bad time for a few months, you go home. There isn't a Max at Camp Idontwannabang. Sure, there's the Axe-Man, but he's just a scary story, the Boogeyman to blame when kids go missing in the woods. All he does, hypothetically, is kill you. Very bad, but he doesn't follow you home, drag you through the dirt, humiliate you for years on end, frighten everyone else into leaving you behind. So when Steph asks about the bow tie, why would he say the truth? Why would he drag all that baggage into a place where he is finally separated from it? Yeah. I wear it because I like to wear it. I make the choice to wear these things this way. I want to stick with this look. I feel cool.

He's been beat down since the fourth grade, not just by direct attacks on him, but by the attacks on people around him. Every choice he makes is in direct response to how Max has reacted to a similar choice in the past. The whole reason he wears a bow tie is to avoid what happened to Travis Colson. His most iconic fashion choice isn't really his own. It's a defensive reaction. All the nerds at Hatchetfield High are basically living in survival mode. The threat isn't just not being accepted, or being challenged by mean kids, the threat is getting the shit kicked out of you. The threat is being harassed and humiliated so badly and so constantly that you have to literally change your home address.

One of my favorite NPMD scenes is the scene at Pasquale's parking lot, because this might be the first piece of media I've ever seen that actually understands why people don't "stand up" to bullies. Sometimes when someone wants to hurt you, they will just do it. Max doesn't need a reason to hurt people. He just wants to, and he doesn't see any reason not to. Pete tries to establish himself, hoping that Max is putting up a front, hiding behind a tough façade. And he might be. But that doesn't stop him from beating Pete until his fists bruise over.

Pete isn't just hyping himself up or trying to act confident in front of a cool girl. Pete is reclaiming his autonomy. Because he doesn't get to make decisions for himself at school, it's all a futile effort to keep out of Max's line of sight. But anywhere else he gets to decide why he does things. And I just think that's neat.

quite a few more birthdays to celebrate! it’s about time eden ages up into an adult lol i have it set on long lifespan so she has achieved crazy things as a young adult. (also i know gen 1 should be dying by now idk when but when i had it on normal life span levi had 2 days and i panicked and went back to long LOL)

we also aged up colson and ashley! i plan on going into build mode and changing their bedroom to be apart of the same unit as odin and wren so eden can have more kids! it will free up two household spaces and we can turn the spare room into a bedroom for more kids anyway! (and eventually add on to the basement if need be, although not very realistic lol)

i’m trying to push things along a little bit to get roslyn to a teen and try to get her abducted by aliens lol, i’ve never had it/tried to have it happen to me in the game before so i don’t know what to expect or if she could have even been abducted as a child so i might have been wasting my time a little bit there lol, she is doing really good on skills so im not upset about skipping through being a child. i just need to max her social and have her make some more friends (i also need to make some vampires for her to date)

Colson, this time, approached the board with a unique blend of satisfaction and pettiness. His nimble fingers adeptly secured a news clipping, showcasing a student's triumph in securing a coveted internship at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Germany. The radiant photograph of the student not only celebrated an individual victory but also underscored Colson's unwavering dedication to cultivating academic talent. He was proud, and showing off.

Stepping back to savor the newly added achievement, Colson couldn't suppress a pondering thought—would Professor Dahey respond with an eloquent countermove? His musings were abruptly interrupted as he inadvertently collided with Dahey, taken aback at the unexpected encounter. "My apologies, I…" A brief pause, then the realization settles. "Oh, it's you."

Chapter 2: Wilford

The boys all sat in the green room, just taking a bit more time before their show. Wil sat on his phone scrolling through TikTok. Colson had his headphones on as he was off to the side shirtless doing some pushups. Emilio was playing Mario kart on his switch and Aizen had ducked off to the bathroom, he often got excited bladder right before a show. The boys had arrived in Melbourne two days ago, most of the time they had just been sleeping off jetlag and ordering room service as they adjusted to the Australian time zone. Outside the room stagehands and technicians rushed around double and triple checking equipment to ensure the show ran as smoothly as possible. Outside the theatre began to fill in the mosh pit as fans were let in, although it seemed like the line wasn’t moving,

“So do you like enjoy going on stage all sweaty or?” Wil asked as Colson sat up on his knees and pulled his headphones down around his neck.

“It gets the blood pumping, warms me up before the show” Colson replied checking his heart rate on his watch.

“Or you just wait until you get on the stage, you know how warm those lights get” Wil chuckled getting up from the couch.

“Hey, I gotta keep looking good for the ladies” Colson laughed starting to dry himself off with a towel.

“Yeah, yeah” Wil said rolling his eyes. The boys all slowly began to get ready before they were given their 10- and 5-minute warnings. They then headed to side stage to be fitted up with their earpieces that muffled the sound of the roar crowd whilst also giving them a direct feed from their instrumentals and any information from their stage manager during the show.

“Four minutes” one of the stagehands informed them. Wil, Aizen and Colson pulled their guitars over their heads whilst Emilio grabbed his drumsticks, giving them a few taps together as he always did before a show. Wil looked beside him to see Aizen energetically bouncing from foot to foot.

“You good?” Wil chuckled adjusting his guitar strap that had loosened in transit.

“Dude” Aizen looked up at Wil with the look of an excited puppy, “We are in Australia, halfway across the globe, I’m psyched” Aizen grinned excitedly. Wil couldn’t help but smile back at his friend’s excitement, he couldn’t blame him. They were playing on the opposite side of the world from where they came from. And to think this time last year they were just a dingy garage band messing around in Wil’s garage before Emilio’s sister filmed them and posted it to YouTube for Emilios family to watch over in Mexico. Little did they know at that time that it wouldn’t just be watched by Emilio’s family and friends, but by complete strangers and blow up, becoming viral and leading them to playing a tour on the other side of the world.

Aizen’s excitement was infectious as the other three began to feel the exciting buzz flow through them. Wil began to feel the itch in his fingers, just wanting to play already.

“Two minutes” They were informed. Wil took a deep breath before picking up the water bottle with his colored tape, Blue. He took a few mouthfuls before putting it aside, there was always a handful of them near his mic for during the show.

“One minute” Came through their earpieces, he could hear the sound of the smoke machines whirring to max.

“30 seconds” The lights began to dim.

“20 seconds”

“10 seconds” The lights were off, leaving them in darkness.

“5” Wil followed the glow in the dark tape to his mark, although even in the dark it was hard to see the tape through the smoke.

“4” Breathe in.

“3” Breathe out. The crowd began to get louder and louder.

“2” His fingers brushed against the strings with a featherlight touch.

“1” Wil’s spotlight lit up, illuminating just him as he played a cord as the light faded until it was darkness again. The next light flashed on Colson as he did his cord, his light fading in time with his cord. Then it was Aizen’s turn, light, cord, fade. And finally, Emilio’s turn, the lights flashing with each of his strikes against the drum before all the lights turned on and they began to play their song, ‘My anthem’.

Wil grabbed hold of the mic with one hand and the stand with the other, leaning in his nose brushed against the microphone as he began,

“I’m feeling lost in this world that’s spinning fast,

Lookin’ for a place where I belong at last,

Stuck in the same routine day to day,

But I’ve got this fire burnin’ refusing to fade away” Wil’s veins flowed with adrenaline as he sang the lyrics into the mic and having the crowd shouting the lyrics back at him. A proud smile pulling across his lips as he glanced over at Colson absolutely tearing up his guitar. His attention then returned to the mic as his fingers et the strings of his guitar.

“I’ll scream, I’ll shout, I’ll break free,

This is my anthem, my say, my decree,

I won’t be held back, no chains to bind,

I’ll make my mark, I’ll leave the world behind”

Wil panted lightly when the song ended, but the smile never left his face.

“Hello Melbourne!”  Aizen spoke into his mic, giving Wil a moment to catch his breath. The crowd roared in response.

“How we doing tonight?” Colson called through his mic.

“You know they’re gonna scream no matter what you say” Emilio laughed.

“Ready, watch” Wil said, “hamburger” and true to Emilio’s claim the crowd roared once more making them laugh. “Ok, ok, hush now” Wil chuckled motioning to quiet down a bit, which surprisingly kind of worked. “Guys, we are so excited to be here, our first show in Australia.”

“Yeah, Aizen couldn’t even stand still backstage” Emilio laughed causing Aizen to throw a half drunken bottle of water at him, purposely missing.

“It’s exciting ok, I’m 100% holding a koala bear at some point during this tour” Aizen claimed.

“Don’t worry, you will get to hold a Koala” Colson laughed shaking his head.

“Those things will murder you” Emilio added in.

“They will not” Aizen argued turning to look at Emilio.

“Your thinking of drop bears” Wil grinned, he had seen a comment on his live that he did yesterday about drop bears and he looked it up afterwards,

“Wait, what’s a drop bear?” Aizen asked.

“They are murderous koalas” Wil said grinning towards the crowd, in on the joke.

“Wait, I’m not dying from a koala, or drop bear” Aizen claimed.

“Oh, its easy to prevent, you just put some vagamate on your nose” Wil explained.

“Wait, is that true?” Colson asked.

“Yeah” Wil turned to the crowd, his lips against the mic as he spoke, “if its true, shout ‘yeah’, if it’s not, shout ‘Nah’ ok, 3,2,1 go!” the crowd erupted into majority of ‘yeah’s. “Told ya” Wil grinned. “Anyway, if you see one, you might want to…... Run Away” he grinned into the mic as they began with the next song called ‘Run Away.’

“God, I need a shower” Emilio groaned rolling his head as they sat in the car that was taking them back to the hotel they were staying at.

“True that, I can smell you from here” Colson laughed.

“Nah, that’s your funk dude” Emilio laughed leaning back in his seat. It did not take long for the boys to get back to their hotel and split up into their own rooms. Wil and most likely the others headed straight to the shower to cleanup after sweating their asses off on stage. Afterwards Wil sat on his bed just in his towel as he chucked on some music on the tv for some background noise. He ran his fingers through his wet hair as he looked down, he was trying to ignore the bulge in his towel, it happened more often than not after a show, apparently it was normal from all the adrenaline onstage. However, it was starting to become a nuisance and his arm was a bit sore already. A groan left his lips as his head fell back against the headboard,

“Just once I’d like to be able to just go to bed after a show, cold showers don’t even deter you anymore” he spoke to his crotch as if it would listen.

VampyrZ on a Boat Movie Review

Sara and Max's new whirlwind romance is interrupted by a vampire outbreak on a medical research ship. Max will stop at nothing to get back the girl of his dreams, even if it means several heads will roll.

What do you get when you cross an ex “fixer for the deep-state” with a nearly empty ship that’s been rented out for top secret medical research? An unlikely May-December romance hindered by a vampire infestation, of course! Mark Allen Michael’s new release Vampyrz on a Boat is an oddball “romzomhorrorcom” that B-movie lovers will swoon for. Never heard that term before? We made it up just for this movie, because it deserves a class of its own. Trust us, you’ve never seen anything like it.

When Del (Curt Lambert) asks his buddy Max (Dallas Valdez) to come babysit his uncle’s ship for some quick cash, Max declines. He has a one-eyed cat to care for, after all. But when the beautiful Sara (Carrie Keegan) walks on scene, Max falls in love and changes his tune. Max helicopters onto the ship and steps out onto the deck David Caruso style to some pretty fantastic action music that promises we’re in for a wild ride. Instead, Del introduces Max to his uncle, Captain Bob (Robert Acres), a corny drunk who carries his ancestor’s pegleg around for luck. Between jokes and wisecracks, the Captain explains why he needs the men on board. Someone has rented his ship to run a medical experiment at sea, and they’ve paid big money to ensure it sets sail with only a skeleton crew, and to knock out the ship’s communication system. Captain Bob wants Del and Max to find out what the research is about and to protect his ship.

Del takes Max to his security command centre and points out a mystery that’s been bothering him: high tech heat sensors show the outline of a man sitting in a chair in a locked room who never moves, but he emits a bat-like sound. They join Captain Bob in the medical lab run by Adele (Kate Rees Davies), a mad scientist who doesn’t care who dies on board as long as her research continues. That “man” sitting in the locked room? He’s very old, and he’s indestructible…but he’s also dangerous…and he’s also escaped. Adele wants to use his blood to find cures for human diseases, to stop the aging process, to become rich and famous, and she tells the men to go find him, and bring him back alive. Aliiive!

From this point on, the story becomes very confusing. Max and Sara have already gotten down and dirty at least once and professed their undying love for one another, Sara has been bitten by the vampire and is infected (but Max doesn’t know this yet), there are rando’s with chainsaws popping up here and there, and a dude with a ventriloquist dummy who giggles while he talks. Most of the crew is already dead after an incident in the cafeteria. While Max and Del search for Adele’s vampire, Max is repeatedly bitten but never turned or infected. At one point he takes a hammer to the head and goes to Adele to have it removed, which is one of the funniest scenes in the film. If you miss the gags the first time, don’t worry, you’ll see them again. For some reason, removing the hammer from his skull throws Max into a Groundhog Day-esque time loop that is never really explained. His sanity is questioned in one scene when he tells Del about the time he spent receiving electroshock therapy in an institution, but nothing more is ever said about it. This could have been used to flesh out the “this is all a manic dream” potential the film had, but it wasn’t. Instead, it turns into a loop that only Max is somewhat aware of, which oddly helps to develop his character. With some memory of what’s already happened, Max becomes quicker when he encounters the same obstacles, evolving into a hero that none of us were expecting.

What the film lacks in cohesion, it makes up for with enthusiasm. It’s clear that sound designer Corey Brown was passionate about the project, as was cinematographer Stefan Colson. The musical choices were perfectly matched to every scene, amplifying the action with power rock tunes and exaggerating comedic moments with almost cartoonish melodies. Coloured lighting was used to enhance the anxiety of being trapped below decks in a military sized ship with killer creatures, and tight camera work made the characters’ movement around the ship realistic. The editing of every aspect of the film was flawless. For a low budget indie, the crew used what they had with the expertise of a much larger production.

With enough funny lines to compensate for the cringier ones, Vampyrz on a Boat passes as a comedy. It has more than enough gore for any horror lover, and while more could have been done to help the storyline make sense, it’s fun as it stands.

Fans of old school low budget B-movie creature features will love this one for its silliness, improbable plot, and decent special effects, and reviewers should appreciate the effort put into the production details. Indie creators make films like these for the love of the genre, and Mark Allen Michaels is a master of his art.
