Eastern Boxelder Bug - Boisea trivittata

If one of the individuals in these pictures seems familiar, you're correct! Previously, this scampering insect was shared in a video post highlighting how it moves around along human fingers. After capturing it on video, this hardy Bug was returned to the goldenrod plants where it was originally found. There, it continued to walk along the many leaves with no particular directives beyond securing food and not getting eaten. The former shouldn't be an issue, but the latter may take some finesse and evasion when necessary. Although the crimson-red coloration sported by a Boxelder Bug is conspicuous, it isn't an indication of toxicity. Unlike a similar-looking specie such as the Small Milkweed Bug, a Boxelder Bug is only unpalatable if its smelly chemical defenses can deter a hungry opportunist. Handling this individual, it didn't leave behind any odors, so I have no first hand experience as to how pungent the scent made by this Bug could be. It would be interesting to compare the magnitude of its defenses and the difference in aromas against some of its smellier relatives.

On the subject of scents, I'd like to clarify something in brief. It isn't that unusual that Boxelder Bugs are considered Scentless Plant Bugs (of the family Rhopalidae) despite their ability to muster a chemical defense. At a glance, it seems that other Rhopalids lack this ability, while other species have this ability, but not to the same capacity as other Bugs, such as the Leaf-Footed Bugs they are sometimes mixed up with (as both families belong to the superfamily Coreoidea). This "scentless" designation has been attributed to reduced scent glands which would otherwise emit odors for defense. I was hoping to see the presence of glands in Pictures 3, 4, 6 or 9 since the photographed Bugs exposed their undersides while traveling along the plants, but I didn't see any orifices. Next time, I'll try and get closer to get a better look (without disturbing them). I'll have better luck looking for the ventral glands rather than the dorsal glands concealed beneath the wings. With all this talk of glands, it's worth mentioning that the signals produced also function as a means of communication between individuals. Other Boxelder Bugs are drawn to the scent to form aggregations, and mating pairs often direct each other using chemical signals. How versatile, especially among trees, the typical environment of this insect specie, as that's where its preferred seed pods grow.
